good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us. scott is off this morning. time is 4:30. i wanted to get started with christina and you said the cold was coming in. it is really cold. >> yeah. a cold blast and we haven't even dropped to the low temperatures yet. the coldest time of the day is around sunrise just around 7:20. it's going to get colder before all is said and done. we have temperatures in the 30s. good morning, east bay. a cold blast with spotty clouds and air mass that settled into the area and it will hang around. we have thists on the map. 34 degrees in sunnyvale. pretty much the entire east bay. concord, fairfield and livermore, give yourself extra time.

we will let you know what's coming up for new year's. we have developing news out of oakland and we have develop thes that there three people in the hospital and others jumping out of a second story window to escape an overnight apartment fire. christie? >> i just spoke with the battalion chief for the oakland fire department and she said this fire was moving really fast. it's just up the block from where where we are standing. two women were outside. they had leg injuries from jumping for a second story unit. they got word that other people may be trapped inside in a front apartment in the front unit when they were able to get inside. two adults and a female child. all they are telling me in a very critical condition. this is a four-unit building in east oakland near international.

this is the time of year people have christmas trees out or crank the heat because it has been so cold. we ask if either of these things might be a factor. at this point firefighters say it's just too soon to tell. they are still trying to piece together exactly what happened. coming up in the next half hour, one woman narrowly escaped all of this. you will hear from her in about 30 minutes. live in east oakland, today in the east bay. >> thanks for that update. we are also on top of another situation in oakland near the border. police are investigating a did thely officer-involved shooting. the s may lead to tough questions about what officers were thinking. marla tellez has more on that situation. >> we are live in oakland at the corner of bancroft and duran on

the border of oakland and san leandro that is causing a bit of a twist. i will step out of the way so you can see what's going on. there is not a lot to see. it is taped off at the corner of bancroft and durant. they are working this case. i believe my photographer is zooming in. moments ago, a to truck hauled away a jaguar that crashed into the side of the light pole and that sedan. i can tell you that one woman is dead as a result of this officer-involved shooting. we heard one man is also hurt, but that is not confirmed at this point. this all started with a san leandro police chase that crossed the border into oakland. we are told it was san leandro

police who fired shots, but because it's in oakland, police are now on this case. this happened close to 10:30 and about 10:25 last night and the video is showing that jaguar with evidence markers surrounding it. again, one woman dead in this officer-involved shooting involving san leandro police that ended up here in oakland. we are working to get new details and hope to have that for you in the next live report. marla tellez, today in the bay. >> i will be checking in there. the search is on for the man who shot a man to death. the 28-year-old man was found with at least one gunshot wound in a multiunit building after 8:00. he was still responsive when police arrived and severely hurt. workers took him to the hospital where he later died. police are intrusion withins and

have not made any arrests and no suspects have been identified. a big push to save a school. the leader and city workers are stepping up efforts to try to save lake elementary. they are talking about possible funding swaps with construction bond money and community center. parents and teachers are encouraging the city to keep the school open. they chose lake as one of three schools to be open. consolidation plans will lead to a shake-up at vallejo schools in the fall. the spring semester will be the last for hogan high school before it is converted to a middle school in the fall. it's one of several changes. cave elementary will be a language academy and mayor island elementary will be a health and fitness academy. more money trouble for the cash-strapped uc system. executives are threatening to

sue unless retirement benefits are increased for employees earning more than $250,000 a year. they are trying to come up with money to pay for future pennings. their plan reduces for future employees, raising the retirement age. police are trying to get to the bottom of a heist in danville. somebody stole a metal brontosaurus that came from a front lawn between monday night and tuesday evening. the ownerships plan to use emily the brontosaurus to bring in the new year. over the years, they often dress her up and anybody with information is asked to call danville police. thieves are targeting a livermore neighborhood, stealing cat lickic converters. there have been 13 reports of

car parts being taken out of the springtown neighborhood area. they are valuable because of the precious metals used to make them. they are part of the emissions control system the catalytic converters can be up to $1,000 apiece to replace. a fremont woman is going to be back in court monday for a bail hearing. she was arrested at her home on tuesday accused of getting nonpublic information including financial earnings from companies and selling that information to portfolio managers and hedge funds. they reportedly paid her more than $200,000 between 2006 and 2008. if convicted she faces up to 25 years in federal prison. drunk driver who is get behind the wheel this new year's eve will risk getting caught in an embarrassing situation. the arrest could be caught on video. they will use a small camera

through sunday to catch drunk drivers clipped to the uniforms of five accept dees in field sobriety tests. they may help build their cases so the judges and juries can see the drivers's behavior. bay area trees can cause trouble and expensive damage. trees are shaping and roots are giving out. if they topple over, they can rush cars and homes. the damage can be prevented if you know what to look for. >> what might be an indication is mushrooms growing at the base of the tree. that's an indication that there is decay in the trunk or the roots. experts say if you have not looked at the trees lately, now is a good time. signs of trouble are mushrooms, noises like squeaking limbs and a tree that is too full. too many branches. if you don't prune it every three to five years, you may be
