good morning. it's new year's eve. do you know how you're going to get to your party and get home safely? i'm christie smith. we have some options for you coming up in a live report. a new year is coming and a new study shows most americans are going to start looking for a new job. we will show you how to revamp your resume to get that dream job. it is friday, december 31st. it is new year's eve day. good morning, everybody. today in the bay starts in just a few minutes. from nbc bay area, reporting what matters to you, this is "today in the east bay."

good friday morning, everybody. it's 4:30, i'm brent cannon. we start with meteorologist christina loren, she has a look at the last forecast of 2010 and the first forecast of 2011. >> oh, yes, and it's going to be a cold one. a cold forecast to ring in the new year. this morning you're probably going to find frost on your windshield in several cities. livermore, gilroy, santa cruz, also areas inland like oakland in the east bay this morning, just give yourself plenty of time to get that frost off your windshield. that will be the case until 10:00 a.m. then we have some changes on the way. satellite imagery shows you a perfect jetstream here. this is going to bring us in some moisture for your new year's celebrations. this is what it looks like, break down your evening for you. inland in the east bay, temperatures right around 49 degrees at 9:00 p.m. so you'll need that sweater or jacket tonight. by midnight 46 degrees. then 3:00 a.m., staying cool with showers all the way throughout the night.

just bring that umbrella with you and stay dry out there. we've got your complete extended forecast coming up. back to you, brent. well, the bay area is gearing up for new year's eve and that includes providing a safe ride home to avoid drunk driving. from free transit to free cab rides, companies are pitching in to keep people safe. christie smith is live with some of your options. >> reporter: hard to believe 2011 is just hours away. i'm sure by now you've got all your party plans in place and just about every bus or train service in the bay area is offering either free service or extended service into tomorrow morning. some cab companies offering free rides in some cases if you've had too many. bart probably the easiest way to get into the city from the east bay is not offering free rides but trains will roll until 3:00 in the morning. for peninsula-bound riders get

on at montgomery after the fireworks in the city on embarcadero. vta will offer free light rail and bus service in the south bay from 7:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. other options, muni, rail, bus and cable car free from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. caltrain rides are free after 11:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. if you ride muni, something to note is that some lines will be rerouted around the embarcadero area because of the fireworks a little later on. reporting live near the toll plaza, i'm christie smith, "today in the east bay." thanks, christie. we have new details about a deadly police shooting in hayward. police now say they will have to reexamine one of the key elements of evidence leading up to it. "today in the east bay's" george has a look at what happened. >> reporter: police say initially that was the call, landlord in a dispute with a

tenant. police say they can't be 100% sure this happened because when they came out here they didn't find an argument going on, just a man with a large hunting knife. the yellow crime scene tape is all that remains, a reminder that something had happened earlier in the day. behind this home on depot road and down this driveway is where hayward police say they shot and killed a man in his 50s. neighbors were wondering what was going on. >> there was nothing but police cars and police activity, fire department and everything was blocked off. >> reporter: police say they came out to investigate an argument between a landlord and a tenant. when they got out to the property, they saw a man with a large hunting knife. >> we believe that the officer feared for his life and subsequently discharged his firearm. as a result of the encounter, the suspect was killed. >> i was being threatened. what choice did i have. >> reporter: neighbor joe adare says the man's name was randy

aronzo. in the home in the front is randy's sister and brother-in-law who had a few words when we knocked on their door. the brother-in-law said, quote, it was just a very big tragedy and the family is taking care of it, end quote. this wasn't the first time the police visited this home. neighbors say officers showed up a couple of times in the past two weeks for whatever reason. >> i feel bad enough. first of all, someone dies next door, you know. the whole family is just a little shaky right now. >> reporter: here police have not interviewed the officer who shot the man. they plan to do so. the officer has been placed on leave. . the hayward shooting is the fourth in the past four days involving a bay area police officer. wednesday night san leandro police shot and killed a woman driving a stolen car. officers say she revved the engine and tried to put the car

in gear. wednesday police shot and killed a man wielding a knife. the chief said his officers acted lawfully. they say the man was mentally ill and officers say he advanced toward them after they told him to drop the weapon. tuesday night san jose police shot a man in the leg. officers were on their way to a home invasion robbery when they spotted two of the suspects on the street. police say they tried to stop the men but one of them started firing. officers fired back and hit one of them in the leg. another officer was hurt when a third suspect allegedly tried to hit him with a car. former bart police officer johannes mehserle will remain behind bars during the appeal process. the former bart officer is serving a two-year sentence in the shooting death of oscar grant on new year's day of 2009. with credit for time served. mehserle could be eligible for release in about seven months. east bay drunk drivers who have not followed court orders got an unpleasant surprise.

law enforcement officers from eight agencies in alameda county knocked on doors and made arrests in the so-called 21 program. officers had 1100 warrants. that sweep began at 6:30 in the morning and lasted until 2:00 in the afternoon. the former oakland as manager who gained notoriety for helping to bring baseball into the computer age is dead. steve burrows passed away last night in florida. no other details are available right now. he helped usher in the computer age in the game with his use of electronic data. he managed the as in 1983 and part of '83, led oakland to a 74-88 record, good enough for fourth place in the american league west, but then he was fired the following year after the as got off to a slow start at 20-24. he was 74 years old. the city of hercules is sorting out a development debacle. the developer of the planned new town center is accused of ripping the city off. city leaders say the president of red barn company out of newport beach has been earning

$20,000 per month as a consultant to the city. travel and other expenses often add up to an additional $10,000 or more. the budget is almost used up but there's no construction to show for it except for a temporary food court. other purchases have been billed to the city. red barn's attorney has agreed to an audit of those expenses. mixed news for the fish in the delta in 2010. state fish and game leaders say delta smelt levels have remained low this year. in fact they are hovering at a level that some biologists believe is near extinction, but salmon making a strong comeback. 2010 was the strongest year for them in a couple of years. some are optimistic that the commercial fishermen will now get more than an eight-day fishing season that they had this year off the california coast. a crane and a cowboy had to

join forces to rescue a pregnant cow. she had fallen into a 12-foot deep well and was treading water for several hours. it was a risky rescue as the cow weighed about 1300 pounds. sheriff's deputies asked a cowboy to jump into the well to strap her up so that the crane could lift her out. she was successfully plucked out, checked by a vet, given a dose of antibiotics and is now back in the pasture. somebody might be lucky enough to start the new year as a multimillionaire. no one matched all six numbers in tuesday's multi-state mega millions drawing, so the new year's eve jackpot is now estimated at $242 million. you're going to need a lot of luck to win. millions of people in 41 states and washington, d.c., play. they all hope to win. tonight's drawing happens at 8:00. a retired east bay firefighter found another way to become a millionaire this week. he hit the jackpot at a lake county casino and walked away with $8.4 million.

he was playing a mega bucks slot machine at the twin pines casino. mega bucks is a statewide jackpot that offers multimillion dollar payouts once or twice a year. so he's the latest winner in that. right now we want to check your forecast. christina has a look at what's in store for friday morning. >> another cold start. good morning to you. temperatures overall are mostly in the 30s. we have one pocket of cloud cover situated over san jose and that's keeping you warmer this morning. in the east bay, though, you're waking up with temperatures in the low to mid-30s. livermore 33 degrees right now and 34 right now in concord. here's what you can expect throughout the day. a very strong pacific storm is scheduled to bring us some rain as we head throughout this afternoon. it's going to slowly make its way onshore bringing our first showers right around 4:00 p.m. lasting throughout the night but all the activity should be said and done before 4:00 p.m. tomorrow. we're not expecting a lot of moisture. somewhere between half an inch and inch of rain in most areas

welcome back, everybody. another live look outside this morning. a little bit warmer than what we saw yesterday, not by a whole lot, but christina has a look at your forecast as we start the new year. it is new year's day this morning at 4:44. there's a major roadblock on the way to yosemite for new year's eve. state leaders closed highway 140 into the park after a dump truck-sized rock fell onto the road. it fell about a half a mile east of yosemite view lodge just inside the park boundary.

no damage was reported but heightw highway will have to stay closed while crews assess the area and reboomove the debris. celebrations leaving up to jean quan's swearing will be anything -- she plans a walk as part of her journey. her grandfather found refuge in chinatown following the 1906 earthquake. she will hold a lighting of incense honoring her ancestors at 8:30 in the morning and then walk through landmarks in chinatown and downtown oakland. her inauguration is at the fox theater at 11:00 in the morning. right now we want to check that forecast with christina. we're talking about slightly warmer. it didn't feel as bone chilling this morning as i headed out. >> some places are reaping the

rewards of a cloud deck out there. temperatures are still in the 30s and we're only warming up into the upper 40s for the most part in the east bay but those 40s will hold strong as we ring in the new year. let's take a look and break down your new year's eve forecast for you in detail. at 9:00 p.m. we're expecting light scattered showers. showers increasing in intensity as we head through midnight. yes, we'll be ringing in the new year with wet conditions. 46 degrees. by 3:00 a.m., light scattered showers. make sure you're really taking it easy if you're out on the roadways. 44 degrees. it's going to be cold out there. you want to bring that sweater or jacket with you and hopefully just dodge those showers as you head out tonight. back to you, brent. >> thanks again. a new report by cnn money shows nearly 90% of americans will start the new year by looking for a new job. whether you're one of the millions out of work or just looking for something better than what you have, it all starts with your resume. and as "today in the east bay's"

garvin thomas shows us, starting your resume is just the beginning. >> reporter: if there's one thing sherri has learned this year, it's that a good resume is never really finished. it should always be changing. in fact she says although she's been looking for work for more than five months, only this last month did her resume really take shape and her job search take off. >> i have gotten phone intervie interviews, i now have a couple of face-to-face interviews set up. >> reporter: so what did sherri do? well, some of the very things every job seeker should do. >> if you really want to stand out, you want to point to things that are specific to you as a professional that no one else has. >> reporter: the folks at linked in mined the profiles of their 85 million users to find the most overused phrases, the ones you will want to get rid of. topping the list, extensive

experience. >> if i'm a sales professional and i'm looking for new clients, i want those clients to know that i've got eight to ten years of experience not extensive. extensive could mean a year, two years, three years. being more specific is really important. >> i see thousands of resumes. i think the most common mistake is people think it's a biography. >> reporter: megan is a director of career services at tech skills of san jose. >> if it's not something you've done in the past 15 years, someone is probably not going to hire you to do that today. >> reporter: she says the smartest job seekers create in essence a new resume for each job opening, going so far as to take key words out of the actual job description and working them into their resume. it is a lot of work, so you need to be choosy about where you apply. >> and really putting a lot of effort into each application. it should be taking you probably an hour to put together a tailored resume and tailored cover letter for each position. >> reporter: another great tip for those who have their resumes posted on job search sites is to

update it. even if it's only a small change, at least once a week. that's because when recruiters search those sites, the newest resumes matching the qualifications they're looking for are the first ones they see. >> if you haven't updated or refreshed your resume in months, i'm not going to find you. you're going to be four pages back. >> reporter: of course resumes are just the beginning of the job search, the foot in the door, if you will. but if you do it right, what you learn from creating the resume is going to help you once you get in that door. >> i think all of these tips helps one recognize one's own skills, one's own value, basically, even a awe human being. >> also another tip is to make sure you have plenty of business cards that include your name, the kind of job you're looking for, a few of your marketable skills and name and phone number.

what's left of the blizzard that pair lowsed the city earlier this week. mike and ariana garrett had some concerns about all of the snow since the ball drop is part of their honeymoon. >> they don't really have sidewalks to push the snow onto. we were concerned about where it would all go. >> reporter: but those on the job are confident. >> the city is going to be ready? >> yes. >> are you sure? >> yes. >> reporter: the city is also ready for potential security threats. the area is under constant surveillance and police will be everywhere, equipped with radiation detectors. >> we have no specific threats against the city on new year's eve. we put in -- any time large numbers of people come together we put in our counterterrorism overlay. >> reporter: wendy gillette, nbc news, new york. now here closer to home in the east bay, you can stay a little closer and still have fun on the town. in alameda, a big band event is going on at the uss hornet museum at 7:15 tonight and there

will be dance lessons. at 8:30, 3:00 jump, a classic big band tune will take the stage and play until 1:00 in the morning. tickets range from $45 to $85. families with children don't need to stay up past their bedtime to celebrate. the science center will have its annual new year's eve ball drup at 11:00 this morning. there's also another one at 1:00 and 4:00 this afternoon. at these times it's going to be midnight somewhere on earth and this year's event will have a little environmental twist. natural latex bloalloons will b used and then calm posted and turned into soil for the center's gardens. time to check and see what's coming up at 5:00. for that we say hello to laura working on the stories for you. >> that's right. good morning to you. a new law goes into effect which will help make sure people get

steal your thunder, brent. good morning to you. things are looking pretty good. we're going to start out cooler this morning in many cities and end up warmer. 34 degrees right now in concord. you're waking up in livermore just one degree above freezing. it is cold out there, make sure you bundle up. we've got rain on the way as well. take a look at this setup out in the pacific. a really strong cold front is going to pass through the area. it's not packing all that much moisture so the good news is we'll see half as much rain as we saw from the system earlier this week. let's break down your new year's eve. 9:00 p.m. in the east bay. temperatures around 46 degrees. showers light and they're actually going to increase in intensity by midnight. just a few scattered showers making for dangerous driving conditions. really take it easy out there tonight with weather in the area. here is your extended outlook for the east bay. 48 degrees for the first day of 2011 and 51 for sunday, which

kicks off a great fair stretch of weather. back to you, brent. >> looking good. a college bowl game commercial will feature a bay area boy is battling a very serious health condition. >> most of us have never even heard this word. for others, this word has turned their lives upside down. >> a picture of 11-year-old alex maddux from alamo will be part of that public service announcement. it features green bay packers linebacker clay matthews. alex has that disease called duchesne muscular dystrophy. the commercial will run during the rose, the fiesta, the sugar and the orange bowls. final touches are being made on the floats in tomorrow's rose parade. workers in southern california are busy trying to get their floats ready. it's a race against the clock for the designers as finished or not, judges begin looking at the floats later on today.

the final floats will move toward the starting line of the new year's day parade. it will be a slow journey as they travel at only 3 miles an hour. the world famous budweiser clydesdales are getting geared up for the parade as well. it was a little cold in pasadena for a bath but they did get vacuumed. handlers grooming the horses and taking them out to stretch their legs a little bit. they didn't get the suds, they got vacuumed. arizona taking another controversial stance against immigrants and ethnicity. and staying safe this new year's eve. we'll talk to the chp about what you need to do to keep safe on the roads and where you need to watch out. plus we'll take a look at some of the new law that say could affect you when the clock strikes midnight. laura is coming up on the back side of the break.
