theater here in oakland. 1807, telegraph avenue starts at 11:00 this morning and runs through 1:00 p.m. she will be having an open house tonight at city hall. starts at 5:00 and runs to 9:00. the doors open here at the fox at 10:00 this morning and seating is first come first serve. reporting live in downtown oakland, christie smith, today in the bi. >> thank you very much. >> a hely controversial move by arnold schwarzenegger in his final few hours in office. he commuted the sentence for the son of former assembly speaker fabian nunez. he was convicted for a in a fight that killed a man in 2008 at san diego state. the govern nor said he thinks that nunez's sentence was too harsh. the younger nunez received the same sentence as the man who actually stand the victim. the family of the victim said he is getting special treatment and

they were not told about the change in the sentence. the governor also talking about what's next for him. he said he is sifting through a stack of corporate hollywood and real estate offers before he makes a decision. he will hit the speech circuit and will probably write an auto biography that publishers have been asking for. he may return to film if he gets the right script. he plans to keep his hand in politics although he doesn't plan to run for another office. >> two bodies found in a south bay home. a man and a woman were found in saratoga off of lawrence expressway. they received a call asking for a welfare check. when they arrived, they found the bodies. no word on the cause of death, but there is no concern for public safety. police are looking for a robber who made notable fashion choices. a woman showed up at a chase

bank on friday wearing sunglasses a i black hooded sweatshirt, pajama bottoms and high heels. the woman never showed a gun, but claimed to have one. she got away with money and they are hoping that video will help them track her down. >> 6:06 and goldman sax making a huge investment in facebook. >> scott said the pile of money will spark big changes. >> bottom line, if you don't know someone who works at facebook, you soon will. they are going on a hiring tear. goldman sachs gave them a half billion investment in return for part of the company. that investment gives facebook a value of $50 billion. facebook is more valuable than starbucks, but with far fewer employees. if you thought it was big now, it's going to get bigger. it may buy the former sun microsystems campus.

running because crews are getting ready to dig in and give the 1.5-mile run the first overhaul in 26 years. more will be replaced with several roadways and curbs to give better access to the disabled. >> the main one is powell street that gives the most riders. this won't be quite as bad. when they closed that, that was really bad. >> the fifth month with work on stores, curbs and sidewalks under way. look for most to be done between 9:00 and 5:00 p.m. monday through saturday. >> new muni bus shelters may look nice, but they do total protect people when it rains. the shelters look modern with roofs, frames, and glass. there gaps between the frame and the roof and they don't have a panel of glass. waiting for a bus means you are exposed to the elements.

christina. >> president obama is wrapping up his vacation today and returning to washington tomorrow. but he is getting a little work done in hawaii. last night he signed the 9/11 health bill into law to pay for health care for responders to the world trade center in new york. it is believed pollution from the destroyed buildings made a lot of people sick. >> the 112th congress gets to work this week. republicans take the majority in the house tomorrow. gop leaders say the first thing is getting rid of president obama's health care plans. you hear a lot more about the national debt. republicans say they are determined to spend less. there is a debt ceiling of $43.3 trillion. congress can raise that, allowing the government to borrow more, but will they? >> i'm not going to vote for a debt-filling entry unless we go back to 2008 spending levels. >> the fear is if we hit the debt ceiling that say say could

happen before june could trigger's government shut down. >> a new way to collect garbage and recycleables. half a million people in southern san mateo county will have a new system. they will separate the garbage with a thirty-two-card system. the affected cities include atherton, belmont, burlingame, east palo alto and foster city. redwood city, san carlos and san mateo. they will begin the service today and have a float of fully automated trucks that will make it faster and more efficient. the marin county supervisors consider a law to ban the plastic bags at grocery stores. if approved, the ban would be in effect in unincorporated areas and only apply to certain grocery stores. they could place a moratorium on

the installation of pg&e smart meters. opponents of meters say they are inaccurate and pose a health hazard. >> 6:16 and a consumer tip from scott. >> we have our eye on border's books. over the weekend it announced it would not longer be able to pay vendors on time. the "wall street journal" said at least one publisher will stop sending new books to the scores until borders bays pills. if you have a gift card as a christmas gift, it would be smart to spend it now rather than later. we don't know what's going to happen. even border's is warning it could run out of cash. as as gift card holder, you are considered a creditor. >> half moon bay doesn't have much of it. the city is considering shutting down the 15-person police department and will hold the town hall meeting later this week to discuss further cuts.

the "wall street journal" said this morning the whole town could disincorporate. half moon bay is struggling like all cities, but agreed to pay $18 million to settle a lawsuit against it that was brought by a developer. $18 million is twice the city's annual budget. >> quite a budge tote work with. more doctors are going online to schedule appointments for their patients. most of the scheduling on their own or do it through health care systems. american academy of family physicians say there several reasons for the trend mostly because of the need to add patients. doctors are growing more comfortable with computers. . >> we will take you out here for the nice easy drive. the east shore freeway and the approach to the bay bridge toll plaza. an 18-minute drive. the live shot.

we have folks backing up in the cash lanes just off of the carpool lanes. i checked with our friends and you can see this. it doesn't look like anything unusual is going on. clearly you see the back up in the cash lanes. no metering lights yet. they will turn on for five or six minutes. we are looking at the travel times and no major issues. these will slow down because there is a lot of folks on the roadway who weren't here last week. 880 smooth from 238 into downtown oakland. an easy drive. the winds are calming. things are changing. >> the winds changed. blowing into the bay area. for us. a much drier pattern than what we saw yesterday. this morning, remnant moisture producing fog in santa rosa.

down to about five miles of visibility. not too bad. three miles of visibility and wherever you are headed this morning. keep in mind you might run into patchy and dense fog. take it easy. as we head throughout the day, we have a weather maker offshore. you see the classic counterclockwise rotation and low pressure. what that means for us is really fair skies. what's going to happen is the system will continue to right south on the jet stream. this is the pineapple express taking the system into southern california. for us, fair skies and probably by the second half of the day, mostly sunny and breezy as the system passes to the south. for los angeles, that means another day of rain and low snow levels. if you are trying to get down there, i-5 is shut down over the grapevine and 58 it shut down. 101 is the only option. we will keep you updated. temperatures are mild out there because of a good deck of clouds

the problem is it's inefficient. about 90% of the energy is wasted through heat. california is requiring these bulbs fade to black to make way for the 72-watt hal jen bulb. that puts out the same amount of light and even costs about the same to purchase, but it uses less energy. the california energy commission estimates that consumers save over $35 million a year in terms of lower electricity bills and it would be cutting down on fossil fuels bushed at power plants. you are still allowed to use them at home. it's not like there is going to be a knock on your door saying you have a 100 watt on and you have to turn it off. you won't be able to buy them until the remaining ones on the shelves are sold. the standard was established under the federal energy independence and security act of 2007 which might have you wondering why isn't the rest of the country doing this considering it's a federal law?

california and nevada asked if they could have permission to enact the standards now starting january 1st, a couple of days ago. they got permission to do that and the rest of the country will have to start turning these things off in another year. live in the newsroom, today in the bay. >> thank you very much. >> thanks a lot. an assembly woman will take a shot at banning raves. she will meet with representatives and law enforcement and local governments to talk about ab 74, the bill she introduced in the state assembly last month designed to prohibit raves on public property and prevent them on private property unless they have a license. they fear it will hurt other night life events. the bill is in response to drug-related overdoses and deaths at concerts at the cow palace and in los angeles. more than a dozen were at the concert in cow palace.

that is one thing not happening in youth sports. they studied about 200 kids ages 7 to 14 and found what there is is a lot of standing around at practice. one out of four kid who is plays soccer, baseball, and softball are getting the recommended 60 minutes of exercise per day. with girls softball, only 2% hit that mark. researchers found that kids got moderate to vigorous exercise for about half of the practice, about a half hour was spend standing around. we are talking about kid who is play sports. 16% of american children are obese and 31% are overweight. the bottom line is this. organized sports are not enough to keep the 44 million kid who is play fit and active. no need to pull the kids out of the sports. keep them in soccer or volleyball or whatever they enjoy. they get a benefit, but talk to

the coaches on focussing on participation rather than competition. if they are competing to win, a lot of kids are sitting on the bench as diwhen i was a kid. try to get them more active. incorporate fitness and exercise into family life and chase them around the park or go cycling with the older kids or go for a jog. that is the key in getting them fit and meeting the 60 minutes of recommended exercise per day as put out by the american act of pediatrics. in campbell, chris sanchez, today in the bay. >> we have to get active and do it together. john elway is getting a new job with the broncos. the first priority might be to return to his alma mater, stanford, and steal the head coach. the broncos name elway as the head of football operations. part of his job will be to find a new head coach. elway will be in miami tonight to scout the stanford head coach. he is there getting ready.

demanding that stanford suspend them. >> the city leaders plan to call a meeting to determine what to do to two apartment buildings that are dangling over a cliff. they are waiting for the two apartment buildings to decide what to do with the property. they could abandon them or build a sea wall or try another way to secure the buildings. the buildings are on private property, but the city is obligated to protect beachgoers and public infrastructure. one of the most corrupt presidents of modern time is what incoming house chair darrell issa once said about president obama. now he is clarifying the remarks. >> in saying this was one of the most corrupt administrations which is what i meant to say, when you handout $1 trillion in t.a.r.p. before the president came in, most of it unspent, $1 trillion in stimulus that this president asked for plus this

jean quan is making history and is doing it her way. she will mark the day with a two-hour walk through parts of chinatown and downtown oakland. she will pick up community leaders and educators and parent along the way before they end up here at the fox theater in oakland. she will be sworn in later on. she is starting at the pacific renaissance plaza at 8:30 this morning with lion dancers and she is off to the resource gallery, lincoln elementary school, home to new immigrants for more than a century. in all about six stops. she will do it in 20 minutes and improving education and bringing jobs to oakland are the priorities along with fighting crime. she will have her work cut out for her. the first murder of the new year was a few minutes after the start of 2011. she inherits a $40 million budget deficit, but before she does anything, she has to be sworn in.

sell you the 72-watt halogen bulb. that puts out the same amount of light as the 100 watt and even costs about the same to purchase. as you can tell-uses less energy. the energy estimates that they will save over $35 million a year in terms of lower electricity bills and cut down on fossil fuels. you are still allowed to use the 100 waus at home. no one is going to knock on your door from the light bulb police, but you won't be able to buy them now. this new law went into effect until the remaining ones on the shelves are sold. this new standard was established under the federal energy and security act of 2007. you might be wondering about the federal law. shouldn't all the other states be required to comply? no, that wasn't going into effect until next year. those two states asked for permission to enact now, a year

prior to the other 48 states. by this time next year, everybody will be required to be on the 72-watt bulbs and not the 100 watt incandescent. the technology has been around for over 100 years now. >> did you know bob can do the light bulb. >> 6:54 and hundreds of high school students took part in an experiment that had them living like they were in the strange and far off time of 1995. >> scott will tell us how it worked. >> teacher in shoreline, washington came up with the idea. one week and 600 schools couldn't text or facebook or e-mail. the theme of the experiment, what life was like in 1995. they had to talk to each other face-to-face over over the phone. students say before the experiment, some of them had never talked to each other on the phone. one 17-year-old said he found
