. we will have the latest off half moon bay in a minute. what you need to know as you get out the door this morning. >> good morning, scott. if you wake up in the east bay, you are bundled up as you make your way out to the vehicle, you will find a good layer of frost. seeing the 30s across the board. more temp rate towards the coast. 43 degrees in oakland. patchy fog and frost will be a factor. you are down to about a quarter mile visibility in novato and livermore. you are waking up with a lot of fog. take it easy out there. mike will be along to let you know if it will impact your drive yet. here's a look at the pig picture. high pressure moves in and will keep things nice and sunny for

us. a nice mild pattern sets up for quite sometime. back to you. >> thank you much. let's check in with mike and the morning traffic. >> good morning. we will go out to the benicia bridge. traffic is light and no major issues. here the chp and a fog advisory issued about a half hour ago in effect for 680 over the water. keep in mind the benicia bridge is next to the carquinas bridge and likely there will be fog as well. you see the 59 through the bay bridge. 680 moves slowly, but we see across the bridge itself, we have the 72 registering. i will watch that light traffic area as well. 680 southbound through walnut creek, but the 24 off the interchange from 680. a couple of lanes blocked for

the next half hour. we will follow that. yesterday we saw good slowing. down below 20 miles per hour. that was the early slowing and the only severe slowing. this week continues to build as folks return from holidays and get back to work and school. back to you. >> developing news, the coast guard moves in to three men clinging to a boat. investigators are trying to figure out why a boat capsized. they may have been asleep at the time. they have been rescued and they are okay. good morning, lieutenant. >> good morning. >> can you tell me what happened? >> yes. we received a call about 1:00 this morning that the boat was capsized. we launched a helicopter and one of the small boats. by the time we made it on scene,

luckily they were able to make it to shore. it was successful. >> i'm glad to hear that. i know there was concern about the diesel leaking. was it in the boat? >> the boat has two on boat to fuel the engines. we will go out there tomorrow to ensure none of it was in the water. >> we appreciate you joining us very early this morning and great job out there. i'm sure there three very happy men happy to be rescued. >> yes. >> thank you much this morning. today marks the opening bids of a professional poker player accused of killing his parents for money. live in oakland with what's ahead in court today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the opening statements start at 9:30 and they are expected toilate ground work for what happened. two very different versions.

prosecutors said that he was living a very expensive lie and killed his parents for a number of reasons. the 32-year-old who is still in custody brutally killed his parents because he was a professional poker player facing hefty debt and hoped to inhurt $1.5 million from them. his father was a real estate investor and his mom a lecturer at cal state east bay were found dead in 2008. they were stabbed multiple times and had blunt force injuries. prosecutors say he was living in a million dollar orange county home with his wife and child while dating another woman and hitting the poker circuit and his debt was spiraling out of control. his defense attorney said all this is only a possible series

of events and not based on hard facts. the d a's office has a new attorney and there is a gag order issued because it is so high profile. if convicted he could face in prison without parole. live in oakland, today in the east bay. a fremont woman will remain in custody after a judge agreed that there is a risk that win fred will if released. she is accused of selling information about marvel and nvidia at three hedge funds. she faces up to five years in prison. she is expected in court january 12th for a hearing. oakland is waking up with a new mayor. jean quan made history for the city and the nation as well. >> i am honored to be the first

woman mayor and the first asian mayor of a major american city. my story is just in oakland. together we will create an epic story of a great city. >> mayor quan promises to open doors to the public and put troubled youth at the top of her list of priorities. she asked people to help her close a budget gap by shopping locally at least 25% of the time. there is a new sheriff in time for the first time in 18 years. david livingston takes over for retiring sheriff warren roof. livingston was elected in joon. he was concord's police chief since 2005 and holds a law degree. among the challenges ahead, speeding up the cell phone emergency calls. currently calls for help are made by cell phones and they go to chp dispatchers in vallejo and relayed to the sheriff's

office. time has run out for a popular restaurant. bing crosby's restaurant shut down suddenly. it was one of the city's hot spots. new year's eve was the last night for the restaurant. they always closed down joe dimaggio in october. a fremont lottery player matched five of six numbers in the december 3rd lottery and hasn't cashed the ticket yet. the winner has less than six months to claim about a quarter of a million. tonight's jackpot is $330 million. let's go over to mike who clearly did not win. >> i'm happy to win it's at least one of the places i have been to in my life. let's look further east at northbound 680. more construction between al costa and sycamore.

not a major impact, but slow for the cone zone if you are traveling north of the dublin interchange. 580 approaching and a little blip off the castro valley y. equipment and larger trucks move around slower than the sedans. 14-minute drive and yesterday we saw slowing and a little build as well. you can see it on christina's reports. a look at the bay bridge with the upper deck and we will see if we can see anything. the top of the towers where we are fogged in. traveling in and out of this shot, but just a note that it will impact your commute. no slowing, but visibility is a bit of an issue. back to you. >> thanks, mike. let's check in with christina. >> how are you today? >> i am doing well. there were stars, beautiful stars as i walked to my car this

morning. >> yes. a clear shot of the star this is morning and that will be the case for tonight as well. clear skies are leaving cold conditions this morning. all the warmth from yesterday escapes out into the atmosphere and we are left with temperatures in the 30s in some spots. we have the low 30s and 33 degrees in the east bay you are at 34. give yourself extra time to get the frost off your windshield and more for the fog we are dealing with. down to less than a quarter mile visibility. have a good deal of fog in the north bay. santa rosa with about a half mile and a quarter mile in novato. low pressure moving off to the east and for us, high pressure will build in and make things nice for a while. we will see sunny skies today and tomorrow and the next showers that we are forecasting are not even until the beginning of next workweek. enjoy the fair stretch of weather. 58 degrees and cool sunshine.

skies and 85% eclipse. the next partial eclipse will happen in june. let's welcome back mike and a check of the traffic this morning. >> i was going to say we will watch for that, but you don't want to because they tell you don't look at the sun. keep your eyes on the road and wouldn't be able to see it now because there is so much fog. fog advisory issued for the benicia bridge. see the cars turning yellow as they turn north. we now see the slowing in the northbound direction instead of the southbound. there might be a disturbance for you. i warned you about the bridge as well and they saw fit as well, fog advisory for the bridge on interstate 80. the commute direction into hercules. we will show you another. visibility down to a quarter mile in portions of livermore. keep that in mind and speeds no problem. at the limit for 580 out of the pass. traffic will build and we saw

slowing there as well. the bay bridge toll plaza and the fog has crept in between san francisco and the bay bridge. visibility might be an issue, but you should be okay across the span and the volume of traffic. >> it's a quarter to. let's check in with christina loren. >> things are looking pretty chilly in the east bay. 34 degrees in concord and 35 in livermore and we have dense fog in the east bay this morning as well that you want to give yourself extra time to account for. about a quarter mile visibility and up through the north bay if you are headed that way, account for patchy dense fog at least until 10:00 a.m. we have big time changes headed our way and lots of sunshine as high pressure moves in and low pressure retreats off to the east and high pressure will stay in control for sometime. sunny skies anticipated for today and tomorrow all the way through thursday. we are looking good around here. here's the extended forecast. 58 degrees by wednesday and up

it could save lives by giving doctors the early detection they need to tailor specific treatments. >> to find the spreading of the cancer early and the treatments that are available today are much more effective, but most of the time many of the big killers you only find at stage three or four. >> they are teaming up with johnson & johnson to make the test faster and cheaper. the hope is to lead to a simple blood test that could tell you or me in our annual physical if we have cancer. >> the technology has the potential to be a screening test one day. >> scott budman today in the east bay. the american cancer society said the news is an impressive step. the hope is excitement translates into success in the treatments. cases of a potentially dangerous stomach infection increasing with children. it's a gastro intestinal illness

that leads to severe sickness and in rare cases death. hospitalized children find cases have gone up 15% each year from '97 to 2006. the bacteria is becoming widespread and doctors are more aware of the illness that led them to increased testing. making healthy choices can set up for good cholesterol levels in life. researchers in australia and finland followed more than 500 young adult for 20 years and found those at risk for high cholesterol as children and made healthy choices like maintaining a healthy weight were no longer at high risk for adults. they add it's important to make sure that kwhrn good cholesterol levels had healthy lifestyles and can stay out of high risk as adults as well. good morning to you.
