>> good morning to you. we have a lot of fog in the east bay this morning. a dense fog advisory issued for the san joaquin valley until 10:00 a.m. that includes pretty much all of the east bay. we have really dense fog. some places are getting off easier, but in concord you have a quarter of a mile of visibility. that will be the case probably for the next few hours. give yourself extra time and keep the low beams handy. looking good along the peninsula. the north bay you will find more fog. the possibility of freezing fog because temperatures are so cold. we are in the 30s once again. 36 in oaktown. we'll let you know how cold it will be coming up. >> low visibility in concord. you have an accident there as well. >> highway 4 eastbound direction will affect the on ramp off of

242. that should be clear, but the skies will not be clear. low visibility there. the chp issued a travel advisory. that's 680. a couple of days ago, there is likely fog through there. a smooth drive and slowing through martinez and not a heavy volume. that will clear over the next few minutes and the maze. interstate 80. 880 with a smooth flow and one of california's last projects is continuing off of 880 and marla has the latest. >> good morning to you. we are on embarcadero right now and this is fifth avenue and above is interstate 880. travel is flowing fine. this is part of the fifth avenue improvement that got started in the summer of 2009.

the pillars and equipment are here, but no activity yet. construction crews will be here by 7:00 a.m. this morning. the point of the project is to retro fit the bridge portion. here's what drivers need to know. from 7:00 to 4:00, caltrans will close fifth avenue between embarcadero and 7th street and east 8th street. detour signs are up to lead them in the right direction. for 880 drivers, it will only affect northbound 880 traffic. traffic heading northbound is advised to use the oak street off-ramp. if you take embarcadero today, you are bound to run into the detour signs. if you take the oak street as advised, you will have the detour sign posted, directing you to your original route.

the fifth avenue bridge was built in 1949. more than 60 years of wear and tear. the construction will strength ep and widen that part of the bridge. the project will finish in 2013 at a cost of $130 million. live in oakland this morning, marla tellez, today in the bay. breaking news. iran arrested an american woman on suspicion of spying. a newspaper reports she entered the country illegally by land and the paper breaking the news is not known for carrying accurate reports. the paper said the woman was detained in northwestern iran and an espionage device was found in her teeth. the woman is identified as a 55-year-old. i am not coming up with much on her. this is happening in the last

minute or two. oakland police are investigating the city's third murder of the year. officers say around 9:30 last night someone was walking near 16th and center streets when they saw a man slumped over the car. they called police and the man was dead when they arrived. he had at least one gunshot wound and they have not arrested any suspects. with three murders in five days, oakland is taking a step back for the past two years. the number of homicides in the city has dropped. there were 90 in 2010 compared to 104 in 2009 and 123 in 2008. alameda firefighters are mourning a loss in the family. he died of cancer of the esophagus. there suspicions underscored by the conclusions of a study that

show some workers are not adequately protected against hazards. >> reporter: rushing into a burning building is not the only danger firefighters face. sometimes it's what's inside the building that is equally dangerous. one family with ties to alameda know about that firsthand. >> you are not always aware of what you are being exposed to until after the fact. >> that may be the case for the captain. his coworkers here at the fire station can't say if firefighting is a direct correlation to his diagnosis of cancer of the esophagus and his death, but it's a possibility. >> there lots of firefighters that are exposed to chemicals and cancer and are killed from it. >> reporter: a study released by the university cincinnati said firefighters are at a greater risk of developing four different types of cancer than the ynl population. the study suggested that some of

the equipment firefighters use is insufficient in protecting them from cancer-causing agents. >> scott was talking to his wife and she said you do everything you can to protect yourself, right? sometimes we don't. >> reporter: that was clear in 9/11. emergency personnel coming down with all types of illness after being exposed to toxic clouds. >> we used to go in records for years when a firefighter had cancer or something trying to find an incidence to prove there was a nexus back to the job. >> bill shows us the seat where he used to sit. it reminds him of his friend and the job. >> it's one of the risks we take. we know going into the job

that's the risk we take. >> he was an advocate for the exposure reporting program where firefighters report when they come in contact with any dangerous situation. today in the east bay. a man who lost his 3-year-old daughter and the girl's mother in a fire in oakland will be able to attend their funeral before he is deported to el salvador. he was in custody when an electrical cord sparked a fire in his family's apartment in oakland. nelson's 7-year-old daughter allison is the only survivor. she could also be deported with her father. >> efforts to clean up the bay will continue. a ship will be towed from the moth ball fleet. the cargo ship s.s. dawn will be hauled to a san francisco port where it will be dry docked and cleaned up and towed to texas. there it will be scrapped.

mike inouye has fog on the road and a frog in his throat. >> we do something about neither. the on ramp at the highway has been cleared so you can get on to highway 4. a nice easy drive towards eastbound highway 4 out of concord and that's a non-commute. the commute direction showing a nice flow, but yesterday a good flow. we will likely see the start up about an hour from now. it will be close to a 35 or a 25. north from the benicia bridge where there is dense fog, the advisory given for low visibility as you are heading up towards vacaville. southbound coming into the area and the east bay, we have a nice easy drive as well past the walnut creek interchange. 580 not showing slowing, but it will crop up around 5:45 or

6:00. back to you. >> over to christina where it's a cold one lately. >> cold and crisp, but we have foggy starts today and tomorrow. after that we will see more of an onshore flow. the fog will not be that much of a factor as we head closer to the weekend. a dense fog advisory for the central valley. the fog is actually creeping into the east bay from the delta. we have a dense fog advisory, but we will go ahead and issue a dense fog advisory for the east bay. visibility this morning is very, very low. less than a quarter of a mile in fairfield and concord and headed up to the north bay this morning will be problematic as well. dense fog a factor until about 10:00 a.m. clear conditions if you are headed to the south bay or peninsula. chilly conditions and a potential for freezing fog all the way through about 10:00 a.m.

headquarters. good morning. >> futures are higher here this morning after stocks posted modest gains and came after a report showing companies added nearly 300,000 jobs last month. that prompted economists to boost forecast for tomorrow's reports. asian markets are higher. we'll get a new filing for unemployment benefits due out in less than an hour. retailers are reporting sales numbers that will begin trickling out shortly. the dow did gain to 11,722. president obama is expected to name new members of as economic team tomorrow when he comments on the december jobs report. he will tap a replacement for larry summers and gene sperling is seen as the leading candidate. carsor bloom to a broader manufacturing post.
