a lucky bonus for me in particular. temperatures guardually climbing out of the 30s and up to the 40s. 40 degrees in san francisco and 38 degrees right now in fairfield. what i can tell you is these numbers are about to seven degrees warmer than where we were at this time yesterday. by noon, we are looking at the upper 40s and low 50s and today as you make your way home, it should be nice. mostly sunny and mild conditions and 58 degrees. you can't see what i'm doing, but i am switching my traffic hat from my weather hat. let's take a look at the bay bridge. we have pretty light traffic here. metering lights are off and i want to point out as well i'm filling in for mike on monday. you can see here get away friday is looking good on the bay bridge. the upper deck looks good as well. fog that could impact your commute this morning in the richmond area. san rafael and benicia and the

bridges are socked in with fog. probably until about 9:00 a.m. we will keep you updatedful. accident has cleared. back to you. >> 6:01. while you were sleeping, new information on an illnesses enning several people to the hospital in san francisco. today in the bay's marla tellez is live outside the marriott at fourth and mission with more on what happened. marla? hob. >> i just hung up with a spokesman and firefighters responded to a call that came from this marriott on fourth street about 10:40 last night. a couple people explaining of flu-like symptoms. one guest was having trouble breathing. at one point they may have fallen. all symptoms consistent for carbon monoxide poisoning. a few more guests came out and

two were taken to the hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning. two others treat and released at the scene. firefighters pinpointed their search and did detect elevated levels of carbon monoxide. here's the element. they did not find a source, but reports say the affected people all work for singapore airlines as flight attendants and worked in the same plane. firefighters did clear the scene after 2:00 this morning at no point was the building evacuated. they are expected to release the statement. fire officials say the symptoms are not life-threatening. live in san francisco, marla tellez, today in the bay. >> thank you very much, marla. >> the owner of san jose's wet

nightclub is defending their hot spot this morning. mike said accusations that forced the club to close down are overblown. we told you about this story yesterday. the club's entertainment license is suspended for 30 days because of a fight when security guards allegedly refused to call police or an ambulance. police say this is the third time they have pulled the club's license because of unreported violence. this is video of the first. the city attorney said he will seek an injunction trying to close the club for good. the "new york times" reports the regulators will look into whether the state broke the law the retirement system suffered steep losses in the financial melt down. the value plunged $160 billion in 2007. it recovered about $60 billion

since then. the bay area has the worst rods in the country. we often hear there is no money to fix them. in a "usa today" investigation, we show there is money, it's just not being used. bob redell has more on the story that has a lot of people wondering what's going on. >> especially given the tight times with cut budgets and such. it turns out that california could have hundreds of millions of dollars more for road projects, but doesn't in some instances because of a simple sloppy mistake. this is according to the analysis released. what the news organizations did was looked over a congressional earmarks. those are the pet projects that politicians allocate. in this case we are talking about transportation. the study found that nationwide, there is still money that remains unspent. in a majority of those projects, not a single dollar has been

spent. when you add it up, we are talking about $13 billion nationwide have been allocated for the projects. now the problem is not only is this money being unspent, but when you have been allocated the money, whether it's spent or unspent, it counts against your state's share of federal highway funds. as a result this analysis found that california could have $568 million more for transportation projects if it weren't for the unspent earmarks. brent and laura? >> thank you, bob. 6:06 and schools all over california in a state of fiscal emergency this morning. in anticipation of governor jerry brown's release of budget cuts, the state spent of schools planned to help districts stretch their dollars. school leader appreciate the good intentions, but fear it won't be enough to counter the expected cuts. on monday govern nor brown will address a 28 billion shortfall.

california cut $18 billion from budgets over the past three years. a news conference is preventing believe employees from having benefits. it applies to employee who is make more than $245,000 a year. jerry hill will make that announcement. the move comes after the highest paid executives in the uc system filed a suit hoping to fatten their retirement benefits. the news conference is set for 7:30 on the steps of the state office building. >> the san francisco board of supervisors will try to, point an interim mayor. during a meeting, supervisors couldn't come to a majority vote on any candidates. that is expected to change today. the city administrator is expected to be voted into office today. he said he is willing to serve if selected. the board couldn't vote on lee during the last meeting because he was out of town and some

wanted to speak to him before voting. san francisco is looking for a new district attorney. mayor newsom was supposed to appoint one before taking over the office of lieutenant governor, but david shoe has taken himself out of the running, wanting to run as another term for the board of supervisors. that happens tomorrow. newsom is trying to find someone to replace kamla harris. a startling drop in unemployment has economists stunned. >> amazing numbers. we want to check in with scott with more. >> down to 9.8% from 9.7% the month previous. that is the biggest drop since 1998. here are the numbers we are getting from the labor department. 103,000 jobs added in the month of december over the measly 39,000 we saw in november. it is less than experts were hoping for. there is the unemployment rate.

9.4%. why so low? it is low. a couple of possibilities. more people got jobs than we thought. after all they did revise the numbers today. it could be that fewer people decided to look for jobs. that would be ironic. they take themselves out of the pool and it falls. expect washington to jump all over this news either celebrating or not. they can't take credit. they date back to december. democrats certainly have the most to gain politically. the head of the fed is meeting with congress today. the fed is not in charge of the unemployment rate. that's the labor department. expect a lot of questions from him. he can shed lights on the very, very unusual numbers. back to you. >> when are ben talk, people listen. >> we checking numbers too. chilly numbers. christina taking a peek at the friday forecast. >> my numbers are not that

interesting, but this morning you may find interest in the fact that we are about to seven degrees warmer than at this time yesterday. we are checking in most le in the upper 30s. we have mid 30s in places like livermore and 38 in fairfield right now. 37 in napa. not as cold as it was at this time yesterday, but we have dense fetchy fog. take it easy out there. look at where we will end up under a mostly sunny sky. 59 degrees in oakland and 58 degrees in santa rosa. the places that do get the most fog will probably see partly cloudy skies by noon and then by this evening mostly sunny skies across the bay area. it will be a beautiful day today. i would say more cloud cover than we had yesterday and that will continue as we head into this weekend. the numbers are up and we will let you know how much warmer overnight lows will be coming up. >> it's 6:10 and the man made

>> welcome back. nice and clear, but also it is another cold 1 to start the day. some folks seeing temperatures at or below freezing. we will be cheak checking the forecast. the 49ers may have a shot as getting jim as the new head coach. rumors continue to swirl. yesterday it looked like he might be going to the miami dolphins. the team's owner flew here to meet and reportedly offered him as much as $8 million a year. it now appears that that deal fell through. teams like the 49ers and denver broncos might be in the running. we also hear that stanford has made a new offer trying to keep him there. >> we might have a hint about what he will do. the star quarterback said he will stay in school another year. luck was expected to be the top pick in the draft. he said he values his time with teammates and his education and he will not go pro. he is passing up a possible

deal, but the nfl could have a lock out that could delay the start of next season. >> the giants will begin spring training and will probably be without the world series mvp. ready to sign a one-year deal with the reds. dusty baker is with the reds and the deal is said to be worth up to $3 million. the san jose state men's team lost a thriller. final score was 102-101 in quadruple overtime. >> wall street ready to react from a startling jobs report. >> we're are looking at the futures rising on this jobs report. we got in from the labor department talking about 103,000 jobs added. 9.4% unemployment. that was a shocker down big. the biggest drop since 1998. i want to drill down on the job numbers. it's a bit telling.

total jobs gained 103,000. wait a minute. private employers say they added 113,000 jobs to the economy in the month of december. where are we missing 10,000 jobs? blame the government and teachers and firefighters. governments shed 10,000 jobs in the same time. this is something we are seeing over and over. the government is delayed some of those layoffs. the biggest employer in the bay area. you think tech. it's the second biggest. the first biggest is government. back to you. >> i would imagine. more jobs lost at a bay area market closing down after 63 years in business. cosentino's said they are getting too old to run the business and it's too difficult to go head to head with whole foods and trader joe's. long time customers say they are

disappointed. >> always friendly and always nice. i made a lot of friends over the years. going to miss it. >> the property has been sold to a real estate investment firm and hopes to bring in another specialty grocery store, but will not release the name until later. the city of bell could be more than $2 billion in the red from a new audit. the southern california city outside of l.a. made headlines after city leaders gave themselves outrageous salaries leading to changes of corruption and misuse of public funds. the city may not be able to provide basic services for the people who live there. they recommend laying off public employees and cutting civic services and possibly disbanding the bell police department all together. >> 6:17 and we want to check the forecast and the commute. christina is pulling double duty. >> and and loving every minute of it. in terms of visibility, much better in the east bay.

still dealing with fog and a live picture over the south bay. a pretty good start to a friday morning. let's show you where the fog is the thickest. that's where you will find it in the north bay. about 3/4 of a mile visibility. the situation is improving and good along the peninsula and the south bay with two miles of visibility. high pressure is our friend this morning. it's driving in a little bit of cloud cover from a system of low pressure off to the south. as a result we are about three degrees warmer in the south bay this morning than in the north bay because of the cloud cover. 40 degrees right now in san jose, gilroy and santa cruz. over to the upper 50s throughout this afternoon. 55 degrees today in gilroy and relatively mild as you head home from work and kickoff the weekend. hope you are looking forward to it. let's talk traffic. we want to get you to work on time. this is the bay bridge and picking up a little bit. no delays here and metering

about road signs. when workers opened them, they produced a puff of smoke and a sulfur smell. one worker suffered burns to his fingers. >> it is scary. it's scary to know that a building that you are working in is having a bomb scare. as an intern i may be handling mail at some point. it's good to know that everybody reacted the way they did. >> no word on yet when the state plans to reopen the mailrooms. a san diego man made famous for telling the tsa don't touch my junk will be in court today. he was arrested in the san diego airport for not completing the security process and recording the incident on his iphone. police handcuffed him and escorted him through two terminals in his underwear. he was in the charged with any federal crime. >> toyota is unveiling a prius to show off the new version of the hybrid at the detroit auto

be back up to speed and the highway moves along freely. we are staying on top of the drive. >> 6:30 and big changes could be in the works for public schools. the state superintendent said schools necessary a state of emergency and he needs to cut cost. christie smith is live with how dire the situation is. good morning. >> good morning to you. it's so bad that they say it's time to call it what it is. we are in a financial emergency. california voters need to know this. he thinks that voters would support schools at the ballot box if they were asked to do so. even educators are saying this is a tough time to be asking struggling families for more money. the superintendent promised a top to bottom review and he said even at trimming would not fill the $18 billion hole left by

state budget cuts. governor brown is trying to deal with a $28 billion deficit and the situation for schools is not expected to get much better with it. he could extend the former governor schwarzenegger's temporary tax increases. he is talking about how he would give districts more financial flexibility with what they have, but here's what we are dealing with now. 60% of school districts have already cut teaching materials 35% and have increased class sides. 35% have already cut a number of teaching jobs. a state budget is expected to come out sometime early next week. christie smith today in the bay. >> representative lynn woolsey from petaluma is in the minority. challenging republicans to end the war in afghanistan. >> in his speech yesterday, speaker boehner spoke of giving

time is 6:45. a live looking shot as folks make their way into the city. a nice cool and clear drive. we will check the forecast in a few minutes. free checking could be a thing of the past and consumers could pay for losses in the banking world. chase said beginning february 8th, they will charge a $12 maintenance fee to have checking. later this month, bank of america will start charging monthly fees between $6 and $25 for customers with checking accounts in three states and wells fargo may follow. >> millionsville to do something to avoid fees and they probably won't learn until they learn the hard way when there is a fee on their statement they didn't notice. >> there a few ways around the fees.

employee down an aisle and grabs a jar of queso and hurls it at the employee and missed and hit an unsuspecting customer in the face. it knocks her down. she suffered a broken nose and other injuries and may need plastic surgery. the cheese thrower got away, but they are looking for him this morning. the makers of for locationy are turning it into jet fuel. they are being recycled into ethanol, another fuel product. a company distills the alcohol from the drinks and sells the fuel to be blended into gasoline. for loco and others were pulled from shelves after the fda announced a crack down on the sale of the drinks in november. >> some people say it tastes like jet fuel. because it is. time to check the forecast with christina. >> maybe i can find a pinto that runs on for loco. things are okay if you are

trying to get around the east bay. it will be easier than yesterday. visibility is much improved. you have about three miles in fairfield and concord. livermore up to a mile and three quarters. looking good, but we have a problem area up in the north bay. we are down to a mile or less. dense patchy fog will be a problem until about 9:00 a.m. and a lot of sunshine today. not as much as yesterday and a few more clouds, but they help to keep us mild overnight and the lows will come up a little bit each and every day. 42 degrees and 40 in santa cruz over to the upper 50s. 59 degrees in oakland and 57 in fremont. mild conditions as you return home from work. the places that get the most fog, part low cloud i by noon and mostly sunny as we finish off the day. you can see temperatures are not

changing that much through this weekend and beginning of next week. more cloud cover tuesday into wednesday and the showers come back just in time for next weekend. enjoy this one. back to you. >> we are following a carbon monox side scare at a san francisco hotel. today in the bay's marla tellez is live outside of the marriott on fourth and mission with the story and what happened there. marla? >> reporter: good morning. the scare was reported after firefighters responded to the marriott on fourth street after receiving a medical call. a couple people complaining of flu-like symptoms consist went carbon monoxide poisoning. they focused on one guest on the fourth floor having trouble breathing and may have fallen after losing their balance. while treating this person, a few more guests came out of rooms with the same symptoms. two were taken to the hospital for carbon monox side poisoning

and two others treat and released. all four were staying on the fourth floor. firefighters pinpointed their search and detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide. it's colorless and odorless and can be deadly. here's the bizarre elements. fire investigators did not find a source for it, but reports say the affected people all work for singapore airlines as flight attendants and they recently worked in the same plane. we are working to confirm this information. firefighters clear the scene after 2:00 this morning and at no point was the hotel evacuate and it is business as usual inside. they are accepting guests and people are still staying on that fourth floor. the marriott is expected to release a statement later this morning. as for the two people taken to the hospital, fire officials say their symptoms are not life-threatening.

apple casting a shadow over the show. everyone is trying to get a tablet to compete and seen a ton of smart phones. really it's all about the consumer mobile devices. we have seen a lot of good ones. i think in the tablets, a good one called the zoom and the galaxy. keep your eyes out for them. they look good. we also saw the outrageous lady gaga holding a press conference to show off new sunglasses that double as not only camera, but video player. you have to be standing close to someone to see this stuff. it's the kind of thing that we can do it. we have the technology. let's throw it out and see what sticks. we have seen a lot of those that you may see in the coming months and years or that may go away because after all, i would have to stand within three inches of you to see. >> 50 cent sued.

what's the overall feel as far as the size of show? it's a good measure of the economy and how big or small the show gets? >> very much so. it's a good sign of the economy. you have been talking jobs and that is buzzing. a lot more people here than in years past. there seems to be a feeling with a lost these 3d tvs and tablets and products. this is the year that people are going to buy them. there is a lot more optimism. it's not just coming out with a lot of products to show off technology. there is plenty of that and a feeling that the economy is getting better. people are going to get back to work and start to spend on the items. it looks to be a good year for the tech industry and that is making a lot of people here feel good. >> very good. reporting live from las vegas. scott and i must be friends if i can dial his hotel room. i know he was out until about 2:00 this morning, thanking all the crews that help us do so much. >> just starting their day too.

thanks so much. 6:53 and we are following the newest jobless numbers. we have been talking about them as they look at jobless claims. while the news is positive, not positive enough. brian moore live in washington, d.c. you got done listening to the chief economist talking about this? >> the word from him is that we are clearly headed in the right direction. his take is that december was the best and wrapped up the best quarter in four years and the best year in four years. the bottom line is economists had been expecting more jobs to have been added in december. about 150,000 jobs that turned out to be 103,000 jobs. it was enough to drive the unemployment rate down to 9.4%, the best in 19 months. there is a trick number in here.
