francisco eh's mission district district. our correspondent reports about that program. >> we have taken to the streets of san francisco to see a project dedicated to promoting t transition and development for the bay area's music, theater, dance, and cultural diversity. founded in 1994 due to the california state reductions of art and music programs, local artists and activists created this organization for inner city schools, low income minorities and immigrant families to access arts at no cost. here now is alex, a director of loco bloco, it's not just about dance and music. it's a self-esteem builder. >> definitely. the organization started about 16 years ago, and it started with community activists and artists. from the beginning there's very family oriented energy in the group and loco bloco, think of a

dance troop and drum troop. we're so much more than that. we pride ourselves on being a youth development organization using the performing arts as a tool to be able to help issues as self-esteem and young people who may not have the best situation at home or maybe they don't live at home. maybe they're in a space in their life where they might be trying something negative rather than positive. what happens is when people come into the organization through the drumming, dancing, acting, painting, through the performing, they're gaining skills that they don't know that they're gaining, like, for example, you're going to perform in a theater piece. might write a script. you might write a scene. you might develop characters with the drumming, you might learn and come to a point in your life where you're teaching. >> it has empowered over 6,000 youths and families and continued to make a difference through music and dance. as an individual, what has loco

bloco done for you? >> made me feel more proud of myself. like i accomplished things that i didn't think i have done. >> loco bloco wants to incorporate art within each student. personally, i'm a dancer, so i mostly do the dancing. i can drum, but, you know, dancing is it for me. >> nothing wrong with that. so you're a good dancer, and you have been dancing with loco bloco since how old? >> about 5 years old. i started with them. my older family members, like my mom and my dad and, leak are their cousins and star were also in çloco bloco. i started to join, and for a little bit i took a break ask came back because it was an organization that all my friends are here. >> the way that we survived is we're hustling out there and trying to get our communities to donate whatever they can, businesses, and then sometimes it doesn't come through, and we

to down size. what that means is there's not enough classes for young people. there's not -- we can't offer all the services that we potentially can offer. our services are free. that means we don't make any money off of the class that is we teach, so we have to go out there and fundraise to pay for the teachers, the equipment, space, and all that. >> not only do they let us hang out here, but they also offer help. if you have any problems, can you go to the office and talk to them. oh, hey, i got a problem. what's up? even just to hang out. a lot of us even hang out outside of loco bloco. it's a really fun program to be a part of. >> people just most of the time either walk into a space where they see loco bloco at, and because it's so free and accessible to everybody they just come and ask and here's the registration form. here you go. it's that simple. >> there are classes for youth and even adults. you don't have to have rhythm or even prior experience playing drums. just come with an open mind and
