machines ago, we had two cash lanes open on either side of the fast track. a big line. now you see at the bottom where it says today in the east bay, a couple of cars and lanes open. a third one is open and the suv is trying to get out of the back up. we had an early back up. the maze itself is looking nice, but more cars today and especially tomorrow. this should be heavier than last week. a lot of folks are back to school and the commute and the related traffic on the roadways. the bridges this morning are clear. no fog like many days last week. that's great news. the carquinas bridge slow down will be around 6:00. 5:30 westbound highway 4, but right now the blip on eastbound highway 4. i will let you know in about 10 minutes. back to you. >> family and friends remember a

talented teen from oakland last night who was shot to death on new year's eve, making him the last homicide of 2010. as today in the east bay's george kiriyama reports, 11 days into 2011, the violence continues >> good morning. last night there was a celebration here, the seventh avenue baptist church celebrating the life of chris jones the focus was on jones's love for music, his family and friends want to send a message to the city of oakland stop the violence now. >> to see the impact young chris jones had, look at the packed church. a few hundred people came to celebrate his and music. >> my nephew touched a lot of people's lives. he was only 17 and he made such an impact on this world. >> music was chris jones's

world. the high school senior taught himself bass giar, organ, and piano. >> songs that older musicians couldn't play, he would pick it right up. god gifted him with that. >> on new year's eve, the music went silent. two men shot and killed chris jones in front of his home. in front of his mom and sisters. >> we were in the midst of going to get him something to eat and drop off my granddaughter. it wasn't meant to be. >> who would kill jones? after all the talented musician was on his way to further his music studies at cal state east bay. instead he became the last homicide victim of 2010. since then five other young men have died on the streets in 2011. >> we are wasting lives. our young men are dying on the streets of our city >> that's why on this night, his

family said it's not only a celebration of chris jones's life, but a call to do something to stop the senseless killing. >> it's up to the new leadership in the city and the parents and the young people also to do a better job of making these young people believe they have a chance to not kill everybody all the time. >> chris jones's funeral will thb morning at 11:00 at st. john missionary baptist church. six defendants will head to court to face charges in the richmond high gang rape case. a contra costa county judge ordered them to stand trial for the october 2009 beating and gang rape of a 16-year-old girl at richmond high school. five of the six are facing charges that make them eligible for life sentences a sixth defendant is facing eight years in prison. the judge dropped changes against the seventh and youngest

defendant. a close call for an east bay park ranger who is recovering after falling down a ravine in alamo. it happened near camille avenue and iron horse trail before 10:00. someone heard the officer yelling for help they pulled him up. he is expected to be okay. former secretary of state condoleezza rice will be in the east bay to bring attention to human trafficking. rice will deliver the key note address at the summit 2011 conference on the 21st and 22nd. organizers say the goal is to equip people to fight human trafficking. there will be a screening of the anti-trafficking film, call and respond. changes are coming to the way students in the school district get to class. the district will phase out the contract with a private contractor for special education busses and replace them with the district's own buses starting

next month. officials say the move that impacts 120 students will save more than $200,000. some parents say the district's buses are unreliable and worry the change could adversely affect students. you have questions, go to our website. we will have a link to the district's website up after 7:00 this morning. startling news for raiders fan this is morning. he was fired, but his contract was not up. it has rare clauses. because he did not participate in more plays in 2010 than the previous year, the contract is void. he was also injured for part of the season, not as many plays. he had fewer interceptions. exactly zero. that voided the deal as well. to his credit, he did spend a lot of time with underprivileged children in oakland schools he is say four-time pro-bowler

chp said you will get a back up because the cash lanes are going to be slower. the live look, we had a back up going on in two cash lanes. in either side. we don't have that live look, we will get you out to a map and show you travel times around the east bay as well. highway 4 not showing the sensors and not a lot of cars so far you are going 65 miles per hour you are getting a live look. these lanes right off the bottom of the screen we had this lane backed up to about mid-parking lot and a couple of lanes opened. all of these and ones on the other side of the toll plaza reopened. that's good news. we will look over from the east bay connection and the san mateo bridge will look nice as well. the tail lights heading away and camera not shaking at all. i would be shaking.

of visibility. we don't have any major problem this is morning in terms of dense fog yet. that could be a factor as we head through the next couple of hours and that looks likely. the east bay is getting a break from the fog. you have eight miles of visibility in concord and 10 miles in livermore. headed up to the north bay, give yourself extra time and take it easy out there. we have fog in that neck of the woods. high pressure will make for a nice day and lots of sunshine, but we struggle to make it to the 50s yesterday. some cities hitting 49 and including san francisco. we are not going to be all that much warmer as we head through this afternoon. temperatures are very, very cold under the clear conditions. without any fog, not too bad. >> let's turn to mike and good morning. i am imagining it's fairly quiet. >> 4:46 and a light volume of traffic for those of us who have to get out there.

at 6:00 that has gabrielle giffords fighting for her life. noelle walker reports from the hospital where giffords is being treated. >> reporter: flowers and candles multiply where gabrielle giffords is recovering for a single bullet to the head. >> there other people injured? >> there multiple people shot. >> okay. oh, my god. >> there is mouning effort that giffords was likely the target of a weekend rampage that left 20 people shot, six dead. part the gunman didn't even pause. he splad at close range to the people there and they were falling in front of him. >> late sunday, his husband expressed the family's gratitud for their support. gabby was doing what she loved most, hearing for constituent when is the tragedy occurred.

investigators served a search warrant on the suspect jared lee loughner's home. he said i planned ahead. my assassination and another one that said giffords. he was scheduled to make a first court appearance to face charges that include murder and the attempted assassination of a congresswoman. >> i am not going to preclude the possibility of additional charges being brought under the domestic terrorism statutes as the investigation continues. >> among the dead, federal judge john roll and 9-year-old christina grown who was born on september 11, the day of the terror attacks and featured in a book about 9/11 babies called faces of hope. >> she began her life on a tragedy like 9/11 and her life was ended with a tragedy here in arizona. the tragedies were the book ends. the book of her life was

good morning to you. things look good this morning. if you want to think about it, put it into perspective. make sure you bundle up and dress in layers we will warm up under full sunshine. we are expecting a few high clouds and filtered sunshine by this afternoon and warmer than it has been. we are already starring out in the 20s. 28 degrees in fairfield and concord at 30. one of the coldest mornings of the season so far. a nice sky later on today and lots of sunshine for us. a few high whispy clouds. struggling to reach the low 50s. still we only got up into the low 40s yesterday. some improvement and clouds move in and that will keep it more mild. temperatures most le in the 30s. losing the 20s. we head through the rest of the week, not a lot of in terms of change.
