bullet penetrated her brain in just a slightly different direction, she would probably be dead. but since then, she has put up two fingers, she's moved her arms and her legs, she's opened her eyes. doctors say they seem now to be tracking. is what we witnessing miraculous, given someone in her condition? >> it's a combination of miraculous, lucky that the trajectory of the bullet is what it was, and i think, we have to give a lot of credit to this stellar medical crew. they had her from a battlefield, through the icu, into the o.r., and back into the icu within 38 minutes. they treated this like it was a typical war zone. the physicians and everyone on the faculty there, it's made a huge difference in her recovery. what they said yesterday with her ability now to follow commands, just simple commands, but it shows that things are firing in her brain and connections are being made. and the fact that she can now track a little bit with her eyes means that she's cognizant of some things around her. >> you know, when she opened her

eyes for the first time, she was surrounded by some of her female colleagues, senator gillibrand spoke so eloquently about that. and one of the representatives, debbie wasserman schultz was in the hospital room, and she says, it shows you what a little girl power can do. she was kind of joking, but there's merit in those words. >> i think she's joking, but we know it's true. when people are sitting vigil and her husband is there and the television is on, you recognize -- patients will tell you afterwards -- that they are surrounded. but then there's a new voice that's familiar and it makes your brain work a little harder. and if it's a girlfriend, yeah, there are chemical changes, there are emotional changes. so it's what i would call thought science. there is something to it. but some thing pushed her a little bit. it was that familiar voice in an unfamiliar setting. and then, of course, the doctors asked them to leave because they didn't want to exhaust her. but a phenomenal sign. >> and doctors are saying now that they're going to start aggressive physical therapy with her.

"meet the press." david, good morning. >> hey, willie. >> president obama had a difficult task the other night in tucson of comforting the people of that city, and indeed, of the country. but also, he tried to calm the political debate. how did he do on both counts, david? >> but, i think by all accounts, he did very well. you hear komcompliments for him both the left and the right, everyone across the political spectrum. and chuck alluded to it. he did two things, which is to give voice to what people around the country have been feeling. this is something that affects people and families, whether you knew the victims or not very deeply. and second, i think he took the country to a place that it didn't even know that it needed to go. talking about words that heal, not words that wound. talking about being as big as this moment requires in our political life and our political discourse around the country. so i think it was a moment that all agreed that he seized and kind of charts a path for where washington, and frankly, the rest of the country can go. >> david, i think we all agree civility's a worthy goal, but as chuck just said in his piece, it

is back to business. the republican house takes up the repeal of president obama's signature health care reform law. why should this time be any different? why will the conversation change? >> cynicism is warranted. this is washington, after all. i think washington can do a great job elevating moments like this to become a national moment of reflection, but washington is also really capable of wasting these moments as well. if there's some hope, it's that we're in the middle of a time now, and leading up to the state of the union address, where this spirit can be tapped into again. the president will do it again in the state of the union. we are about to have another health care debate. it doesn't have to be the way it was. there are even moves by senator tom udall of colorado to have both parties sit together instead of sitting apart. these are small gestures, but ultimately it's about how the debate moves forward. we'll have big debates about the role of government in our lives, government spending, and health care and the like. it's a question of do people really want to make that turn. >> and of course, david, sarah

palin has been right in the middle of this conversation. even linked by some of her critics to the shooting because of her rhetoric. there was, of course, no evidence of that at all. now getting some criticism for that facebook statement she put out on the same day of the memorial. what is the long-term impact, david, on her political brand? >> you know, it's so difficult to gauge that, because we don't know where she's headed politically, other than being a really big political star, willie. everybody talks in terms of a potential run for the presidency for her. we just don't know if that's where she's headed. we just know at the moment she has huge political impact. i think the criticism of sarah palin would be that she made it more about her than it needed to be. that she was speaking to, perhaps, a narrow band of supporters, who wanted to settle scores here after being linked to all of this in a way that was not supported by any evidence. that she didn't take an opportunity to go bigger, as the president did, and talk about this political moment that we're in, independent of what happened in tucson in terms of how we talk to one another. so i think that's the criticism that will carry with her. and look, she has carried for a
7:15 am
long time this about or this question about whether she can step outside that narrow band of supporters and reach a wider audience. >> and david, i imagine these will be among the topics of conversation on sunday's "meet the press"? >> no question about it, willie. we have a special roundtable dedicated to these questions about our political discourse moving forward, martin luther king's birthday, al sharpton will join our roundtable. but we'll begin the program with a debate about washington, the debate over gun control. senator schumer and coburn join me for that discussion. >> david gregory, thanks so much. now let's head over to the news desk where ann curry has a check on the morning's other top stories. >> also in the news this morning, wikileaks is contributing $15,000 for the legal defense of the army private accused in one of the biggest security breaches in u.s. history. private bradley manning, a junior u.s. soldier, is charged with leaking hundreds of thousands of secret documents to wikileaks. hundreds of abandoned cars still litter highways in the south where residents of georgia
