to give young people and seniors a bit more time to apply for and to receive the universal bay area transit card. 25,000 seniors and 9,000 kids and teens have theirs. call this a financial bunlt. the owner of the oakland a's is trying to buy up land in downtown jose to help the city with its dream of building a downtown ballpark for the a's. a's owner, lou wolf, confirms that he is interested in buying two of the six pieces of land that the city wants to sell downtown. the city needs to sell the land to raise td money to buy the land near hp pavilion to build a ball game for the oakland a's. lou wolf, who owns the fairmont hotel, wants to buy the garage underneath the fairmont shall which belongs to the city and a retail area next to it. that would cost him an estimated $20 million. now, to tucson and a possible california connection

to the arizona mass shooting. it is shining the spotlight on bay area senator, leland yee. investigators are looking at a possible tie between threats made against the congresswoman and disturbing calls made to leland yee last year. he received several threatening messages last spring following his investigation of sarah palin's speaking contracts with cal state law. >> i just read and article here in l.a. about mr. leyland lee, about the english and all of the language. you know what, this is the united states of america. if you don't like it, tell him to go back to china. >> obviously, that is the voice of a woman but investigators in arizona say they are uncovering several voice mails in their investigation into the shooting massacre in tucson. a southern california law maker is taking a very close look at the law that allows californians to openly carry

unloaded weapons. california's open carry law has been on the book since 1969. it allows people to carry an unloaded weapon, although with ammunition separate. state assemblyman, anthony portotino wants to make carrying firearms a misdemeanor even if they are in plain sight and unloaded. violators would face up to $1,000 in fine or 1 year in jail. by the way, the california police officers association supports this bill. police say that open carry events like the one we have seen in the bay area drain resources, because police officers have to monitor gatherings where foix are gathered with weapons. the department of homeland security has pulled the plug on a virtual fence across the southwestern border after spending $1 billion on the project. yesterday, the federal agency announced that the five-year-old border security project was too ineffective and too costly. the project was signed in 2005 by then president, george w.

bush. the agency now says it is turning to a mix of proven and existing technology that will allow agents to patrol a bigger chunk of the border at a much lower cost. now, let's take a look at our weekend forecast. hopefully, you have mlk day off on monday. >> a lot of folks will. this could be the warmest day of the year so far. the year is kind of short. we had the rain and soggyness for december and it kind of carried over into this year. right now, we are off to a pleasant start, 46 degrees. nice sunrise around san jose. in the north and east bay valleys, we have temperatures in the low 40s. we do have patchy fog out there this morning, which will lead to temperatures this afternoon running cooler. let's say the rest of the bay area. san jose southward, it is going to be a mild day today. there, you see visibility in miles down to a quarter mile or less in parts of the north and east bay valley, especially for

napa and solano county. fog will slow you down around the north and east bay valleys. for the rest of bait, as early as noon, we will see tches climbing xloes to 60 degrees. the wide pattern change we are seeing across the west coast is a large ridge of high pressure starting to build in to our west. you can see here the clouds arching off towards oregon state. it is going to miss us. this is what we sometimes refer to as a mid-winter dry spell. the calendar says january. when you get a ridge of high pressure this strong, it acts like a wall that's going to take all the incoming moisture and steer it mainly off to the north. not only for this weekend but off and on as we go into the workweek as well. today, the fog is the big story around the north bay. we will probably see the breakup mid to late morning. high temperatures around the north bay, upper 50s to near 60. areas around san jose should get

into the mid-50s. tomorrow, cools down as the system drops into the north bay, mendocino and lake county. this system will miss the north bay for tomorrow. the chance of clouds spilling in. futurecast, tuesday, and wednesday, you will see the rain staying way off to the north. this is typically one of the wetter and colder months of the year for us. this is pretty unusual weather we are going so see set up that starts this weekend and takes us into the workweek. your sierra forecast shows springlike conditions, awesome condition. we have an incredible base of snow in the sierra. temperatures for the afternoon, pretty comfortable. 50s for highs through monday if you want to catch some awesome skiing. outstanding conditions. temperatures around the bay area, mid-60s, san jose. 50s, 60s across the north bay thanks to the fog. the fog is going to be the only thing that keeps us relatively cool in the north and east bay valleys. a look at your seven-day

forecast. i think gilroy today and again on monday may get close to 70 degrees. it depends on the fog for the north and east bay valleys. some computer models that go out as far as the 30th where we don't look like we will be seeing any rain. we still need the rain and snow. a great start to the fall in winter with a lot of rain and snow. this pattern that's setting up does look pretty dry for the next two weeks. a good thing we got a good start to the rain and snow pack. things are looking to stay dry for a while. we do know of two breaking news situations that are developing right now. there is a crash on southbound 880 near the coliseum that has the freeway shut down. if you are headed through that area, reroute to give investigators room to vith. >> police are investigating a fatal shooting high atop twin

we know that san francisco investigators are on the scene of a fatal shooting high atop

twin peaks, some place that folks go to hike around on the weekends. if that is included in your plan, you might want to find some place else to work. they are still working an active scene. what we understand, people started calling 911 around 3:30 this morning saying they were hearing gunshots. it appears at least one person was killed up there. a van was seen leaving the area. police say they will be searching any vehicle that is passing through that area as well. steer clear of twin peaks in the city. southbound 880 near the coliseum near oakland is completely shut down. there was a very bad accident overnight. we understand at least one person may have died in that crash. so folks are being rerouted around the area. of course, the hagenberger is in that area. use 66 avenue to get around. if you are taking 880 up through

the area or down through the area, take an alternate route. moving on now, used iphones are going for big bucks on websites like craigslist and ebay. people are jail breaking the phones, so that phones can work on other carriers and allow any apps to be installed. the iphone underground is more common than many people think. >> reporter: he is working with his third client of the night. his job, jail breaking or unlocking iphones. >> once i found out i knew how to do it, then everybody started telling p telling me they want their phone unlocked. i thought, i might as well make it a business. >> reporter: it allows the owner to use any carrier, not just at&. tth. >> i think t-mobile is $40 or

the fog. let's take you on a tour of our beautiful bay area. in san francisco, you see the flag pointing to the left. the sign offer an offshore breeze. we are seeing a little bit of that this morning. the pink clouds you see at times, those are high clouds streaming in. here is a fantastic view of not only the lou clouds but the patchy skies. there is a picture of the bay brinl. no fog around the bay. you will find some waiting for you if you get into napa and solano counties this morning, mainly inland as we are seeing some low clouds in san jose. looks mostly clear. it will be mostly nice into the afternoon. some temperatures you can expect this morning, around the bay area, 46 degrees in san jose. 52, san francisco. cooler into fairfield and notice the wind direction. the sign of an offshore breeze. the reason we are seeing fog in

concord, fairfield and napa, visibility is down to a quarter mile. fog in a few areas inland. afternoon, talking upper 60s out there in a few areas, especially areas south of san jose. springlike temperatures today. notice, no rain on the radar. all three scans running around the bay area. you can see there, that's green you are seeing there. that is picking up some of the fog for areas near sacramento. you can see the real rain is way up on the coast. it should stay there as we now enter what we sometimes refer to as a mid-winter dry spell. this is typical of a la nina pattern where the storm track anchors off to the north. it could stick around not just for this week but maybe part of next week. it means that the ridge of high pressure acting like a wall. no rain coming in today. patchy fog with light offshore breeze. highs in the north and east bay valleys. upper 50s to low 60s today. tomorrow, a weakness will allow the system to drop a little bit of rain for areas north of

mendocino counties. bay area, what you will notice is a few extra high clouds and a little bit of cooling. high pressure strengthens, heading into monday. notice the rain next week never getting south of lake county. unusual for january. typical of a mid-winter dry swell if you are traveling to the sierra, easy drive. no storms on the horizons. look at those highs. beautiful skiing. temperatures in the '50s to wrap up the weekend. around the bay area, highs in the mid to upper 60s. high temperatures running a little cooler. fantastic weather for the weekend. holiday on monday. tuesday to wednesday, more fog pumping in from the central valley. staying dry through friday. that was at least a ten-day forecast.

not seeing anything breaking down this stretch of high pressure. some indications are it may actually strengthen later next week. maybe we will bump the temperatures up more. some of the kids on our street got new bikes. santa was very kind to them. it has been tough watching them trying to ride those bikes in the rain. >> i just want to update you on the possible fatal crash on interstate 880. if you are routed through that area, you are all clear now. that accident has been cleared from the scene. so traffic should be moving smoothly once again on 880, north and southbound right around the coliseum. we will be right back. off to the north. we are talking portland to seattle northward. we enter a la nina pattern that sets up where you get a strong ridge of high pressure which will act like a wall and block every incoming storm and send it off to the north. a dent in the ridge will which allow one weak system to drop on in. cool us off for tomorrow. maybe some showers up by ukiah. temperatures 10 degrees above average for this time of year. tomorrow, a little bit of a cooldown. i think the main effect you will see of tom's fast is a few extra clouds coming in. if you are heading to lake county or mendocino county northward, you will see some showers. temperatures will rebound again as we head towards monday. here is the futurecast. look at the rain line. it is pretty much what we call oregon missed. meaning it missed us and heading

off to oregon and washington. you are going to see a lot of that. here is what you are going to expect. we are going to see highs in the 50 ths weekend. we have an outstanding snow pack built up by heavy snow through december. things still looking pretty good in the sierra. looking great around the bay area. 57 degrees no san jose. temperatures drop off a little bit. plaes seeing the fog this morning. if you like today, more or less, you are going to like the next seven days. for the far north coast, maybe some showers. the only hint of any chances of rain all the way through you friday. this pattern could stick around for two weeks. in a winter dry spell, this happens from time to time. we will be watching that. off to a great start with the rain and snow pack so far this year. we do still need more rain and snow. >> your radar was interesting. we are used to seeing that big

swath of white. then, you had a little corkscrew. what is that about? >> that is a little band of cirrus clouds. >> thank you very much, rob. we want to update you on our two breaking news stories. interstate 880 through oakland through the coliseum was shutdown because of a possible fatal crash. that is, once again, clear to make sure you knew that if you are heading out the door. fraens police are still on the scene of a possible whom say investigation. they are atop twin peaks where folks started calling 911 around 3:30 saying they heard gunshots. when police arrived, they say they found one person who had been shot. some folks are reporting that they saw a white van leaving the area around the same time. police say that they are going to be searching vehicles that are leaving the area this morning. that's on twin peaks. if you were headed up there for a hike, you fight want to pick

some place else. flame retardant jet fuel, a few of the toxic chemicals found in pregnant women. this is study information that was gathered by bay area researchers, which is leading to big questions including what moms are passing on to their children before they are even born. where scientists think these toxins are coming from. >> reporter: despite excellent prenatal care, virtually all pregnant women are walking around with toxins that could be harmful to their baby according to a new ucc san francisco study. they analyzed the blood of 268 pregnant women and found 43 chemicals in all of them. including flame retardants found in the foam of coaches. >> it appears to be of high ter exposure to women in california. >> reporter: the toxins detected can be found in some nonstick

cookwear and computer parts. virtually all the women had a chemical link to ddt, pesticide banned before many of the women were born. >> some of the risk that it can effect are the developing brain and the developing mail reroe duck tiff system. some chemicals have about associated with influencing hormone levels. study author says to protect against toxins, pregnant women should wash their hands often shall use stainless steel water bottles, avoid using plastic and use chemical products with fewer chemicals. sign sif scientists say it is next to impossible for pregnant women to avoid all taxic chemicals. there are just too many where we live. we will be watching that for you. we will be right back.

monday is martin luther king jr. day. if you have that day off, you are probably making plans to commemorate or do something else. look live from our san bruno mountain camera, looks a little breezy. rob says it is going to be warm. especially around san jose. we are talking temperatures maybe 10 degrees above average. you saw a little bit of fog from san bruno mountain if you look off to the north bay. no rain to talk about. you can see we have high clouds going by but that's about it in terms of the moisture in the upper atmosphere. the low-level fog is causing issues towards napa and fairfield. temperatures not all that bad when you factor in we should see highs in the mid to upper 50s this time of year.

is reintroducing a measure requiring children to wear a helmet when they are skiing or snowboarding at california resort. it would cost parents a $25 fine if their child is caught not wearing that helmet. governor schwarzenegger signed a similar bill that never became law because it was linked to another measure that wasn't as popular. yee says this is as just as important as the state's bicycle law for children. >> nearly half of the deaths of kids on slopes could have been prevented if, in fact, they were wearing a helmet. that's why this is so important. >> if yee's bill passes, california ski resorts would be in charge of enforcement. a newly restored palace of fine arts is now open in san francisco. the palace has received a $21.2 million facelift, including color refinishing of its walls, earthquake reinforcement of the
