progress, let us all pause and reflect on this martin luther king day." at a vigil for the shooting victims, word spread of the congresswoman's upgraded condition. >> our prayers are being answered. >> reporter: welcome news after a weekend of sorrow. sunday, a funeral for dorwin stoddard, one of the six killed. the 76-year-old father of five shielded his wife from the gun fire. a few miles away, a tribute to gabe zimmerman, 30 years old, engaged to be married, he worked for congresswoman giffords. 800 attended his memorial. giffords' husband, mark kelly, who rarely leaves his wife's bedside was there. >> mark kelly said on gabby's behalf, she felt like he was a younger brother in many ways and we could all relate to that. >> reporter: hours earlier, hundreds gathered outside of giffords' office, a rally for peace after bloodshed.

>> we want to show the entire community, hey, look, we care. we're here. this happened in our backyard, but we're not going to put up with it. >> reporter: meanwhile, new audio and video has surfaced of suspected gunman jared lee loughner. >>his is genocide in america. thank you. this is jared. >> reporter: loughner reportedly made this rambling video at pima community college, promising officials there to expel him. a friend tells cbs's "60 minutes" loughner left this voicemail hours before the shooting. >> hey, it's jared. i just want to tell you, good times. peace out. later. >> reporter: the new york times says when loughner was arrested, he told police, quote, i plead the fifth. tucson bank tellers also told the times when loughner entered their banks they would feel for the alarm button, shaken by his

demeanor. at the crime scene, the fbi reportedly retrieved surveillance video. the shooting captured on camera. >> the sources we have talked to in law enforcement say this is a very gruesome video. it's very clear that the suspect is resembling mr. loughner. it's something you don't want to see. >> reporter: but dr. steven rayle can't forget what he saw. he held the gunman down and tried to save the wounded. >> the only way to heal it is to face it. see where i laid on the ground, helped the people that were dying. >> reporter: with the congresswoman's condition upgraded, two others remain in good condition here at the hospital. this morning, the washington post says jared lee loughner's trial will likely be moved to san diego. ann? >> all right, miguel almaguer this morning, thank you. it is 7:14. here's matt. >> the events in tucson cast a shadow over the mood and tone in washington, but will anything really change as lawmakers get back to business this week? chuck todd is nbc's chief white

airport. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, ann, from heathrow. we were given the tour by iranian officials. iran is trying to show greater openness ahead of key negotiations in istanbul later this week. it's a rare look inside iran's controversial and secretive nuclear program. we are asked to wear lab coats. probably the most important piece of equipment. and pocket-sized radiation detectors. precautions because the reactor in tehran is on. we pass through two massive metal doors, slip plastic covers over our shoos and finally enter the tehran research reactor. the central room is circular, 100 feet in diameter. it's an old facility, built before iran's 1979 islamic revolution. today, a portrait of the revolution's founder hangs on the wall.

this is a main cooling pool. the actual core of the reactor where the fuel rods are kept is about 25 feet below the surface. the cooling pool glows with a blue light. the detectors show radiation levels are normal. the facility appears clean and well maintained. it is very unusual for iran to allow anyone to tour its nuclear facilities, let alone take television cameras inside. the people here seem uncomfortable that we are here. we haven't been able to talk to scientists directly and we are not allowed to take pictures of their faces. earlier iran's chief nuclear negotiator told us the tehran reactor produces medical isotopes. >> translator: on an issue which is completely and solely a humanitarian one and more than 850,000 patients are using the medication. >> reporter: he also discussed what he says are foreign attempts to sabotage iran's nuclear program by corrupting its computers and killing its

scientists. do you feel that the nuclear program of iran is under attack? who do you think is responsible? >> translator: we want to show that the zionist regime lead and somehow manage these assassinations. >> reporter: you believe it was the united states that was responsible for the cyber attack, for the worm? >> i'm not telling -- i mean it's clear as this, but i have witnessed documents and the proof that they have showed their satisfaction in that. >> reporter: international officials don't dispute that the tehran research reactor produces medical isotopes. but they are deeply concerned how iran obtain it is fuel. iran enriches uranium to a higher concentration. it says for this reactor, but american officials worry it takes iran a step closer to being able to make a nuclear weapon. iran insists it has nothing to hide and isn't making a bomb. the tehran reactor is monitored

shouldn't you? >> this one isn't even mine. you have no idea. >> he stole it from natalie portman. >> i had to do something in the eight hours we had. >> your thoughts. it's such a big night. from everything we have heard, not only having you on our show but what i have been reading over the last 24 hours about this movie. this was a feel good experience from start to finish in terms of the making of this movie. so when you see it getting this kind of support and, you know, applause, how does it feel? >> in my experience, as rewarding and as satisfying as anything i have ever experienced. i think a huge tribute to david fincher. you can't make a great movie without a great film maker and we were incredibly lucky to have somebody who raised the bar for us. that's why we're here.

from financial stress while in harm's way. this may never have come to light but for a marine captain and his wife. >> we love you, honey. >> love you, too. i miss you guys a lot. >> reporter: these days julia and jonathan, an f-18 pilot conducting missions in asia, talk mostly via skype. always part of the conversation. their two children and their endless battle with chase. >> it's a nightmare. it's been my living nightmare. >> reporter: the saga began in 2006 when rolls went on active duty. by law, active duty troops generally get the interest rate lowered to 6% and are protected from foreclosure. but chase took months to lower the rate. initially overcharging the family. they say by as much as $900 a month. then two years ago, they say chase began hitting them with

collection calls, which escalated. >> this is sandy with chase home finance -- >> reporter: sometimes three a day, claiming they owed as much as $15,000. >> saturday and sunday, middle of the night, did not matter if it was a holiday. >> reporter: what were they threatening to do? >> take the house, report us to the credit agency. >> reporter: how much money did you owe the bank? >> we didn't owe them anything. >> reporter: you didn't miss a payment? >> no. >> reporter: their records show they kept making payments based on the 6% rate but the bank wrongly charged them and hounded them for money they didn't owe. desperate, the family got a lawyer and sued chase for themselves and other troops. >> to worry about fighting the fight and keeping alive, not about whether their families will be on the street. >> reporter: a chase official now tells nbc that they did everything right and the bank did a lot wrong. in reviewing other mortgages,

massachusetts's teenager phoebe prince took her ownç life afte she was allegedly bullied at her high school. now, another girl at the same school claims she's a victim of bullying. in a moment we'll talk to phoebe's aunt. but first, nbc's john yang has the latest on this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the suicide helped state lawmakers to pass a tough new anti-bullying law, but some are wondering how much has really changed? ♪ >> reporter: in south hadley, massachusetts, a somber anniversary. one year since phoebe prince hanged herself in the stairwell of her home. prosecutors say for months she was bullied by the mean girls at south hadley high school, tormented daily with shouts and threats. >> they probably bullied her because she was new, pretty, she was from another country. >> reporter: school officials say nothing was ever reported to them. according to prosecutors the day of phoebe's suicide students shouted at her, why don't you go kill yourself?

since then at south hadley high, committees have been set up, programs established and experts consulted. now there is another allegation of bullying at the same school. >> i have been called satan, a couple other curse words. i've been threatened to be beaten up. >> reporter: jennifer says her daughter payton, a 16-year-old sophomore has had to endure name calling. >> if she's not cookie-cut she doesn't fit. she's not the stereotype kid. >> reporter: she said payton has been diagnosed with asberger's syndrome, a developmental disorder which can result in social awkwardness. teachers and school officials aren't doing enough to help, even though she says she's called the school four times. >> numerous conversations about the abuse that was going on, the fact that payton was unhappy. >> reporter: school officials won't comment in detail on the allegations citing privacy laws but they dispute the family's claims. in phoebe's case four girls and two boys were charged with felonies including engaging in a

pattern of persecution. they have pleaded not guilty. in the year since phoebe's death lawmakers have unanimously approved a tough new ant anti-bullying law. friends have missed a girl they describe as popular. >> a lot of people wanted to be like phoebe. at first when i saw her i was like, oh, my god, i want to be like her. everybody thought that. >> reporter: and a family has had to endure 12 months including phoebe's birthday and christmas without a daughter they love. the six students charged in phoebe's case are to go on trial later this year. ann? >> john yang, thank you. >> prince's aunt eileen moore joins us along with a friend of the prince family. good morning to both of you. >> good morning, ann. >> i understand that in this year since phoebe passed away you have come to believe that she actually endured more bullying than you originally believed. is that true? >> that is definitely true, ann.

i would be the first to say i was naive. i could not believe that if major bullying was going on in this school, and abuse, the teachers and the educators would not step up and do something. >> there is a story that you have heard about -- sorry to interrupt you -- there's a story you heard about, phoebe being on the classroom floor crying and students were stepping over her. where did you hear this story and what are the details? >> i heard the story several weeks ago. i was gutted to say the very least. and the person who told me, i asked, is this verified and by how many sources? they said, oh, yes, it is verified and by several sources.

i said, we have to do something. it's gut-wrenching. is all i can say. >> the story that you heard is that students were stepping over her and just sort of ignoring her as she was in a fetal position sobbing. the south hadley principal dan smith, responded to that saying i can unequivocally say ever documented or reported to the school. it is also important to note that through both the d.a.'s investigation as far as i am aware and through our own investigation into the misbehavior of our students, this alleged incident was never identified, discussed or reported in any form. certainly it's probably something that's now being investigated. now that you've heard about this other case, this case in which a young woman named payton spinney is claiming she was bullied, maybe you want to weigh in on this, darby. what do you want to say about what's changed and not changed at the school? >> well, it was actually

payton's mother who told me that phoebe was laying on the floor and kids walked over her. she reported that to the high school four times last year and was told by counselors they were aware of it and that they were on top of it. it was also payton's state education advocate who called me back in late november really frustrated with the way that the high school was not dealing with their client and asked me if i could help. on the 6th of december and again on the 13th of december, i met face to face with the superintendent and i mentioned this case about payton and he didn't acknowledge anything i said. i asked him, doesn't it bother you, gus, that state officials are coming to me because you can't get, you know, these problems addressed in the high school? >> well, darby o'brien and eileen moore, we hope you find

of the -- that sort of mustard-melon color she wore just fit her perfectly. number one, it's a very grown-up dress. she's not a child but she has a great air and energy about her. this color just made her happy. it was great with her hair. she had beautiful green lorraine schwartz earrings, one of the few people who wore a lot of jewelry last night. the jewelers must be weeping. it wasn't a night for grand jewelry which took away some of the fun. this was a great dress because it worked in her color. >> and the great ruffles. i liked the ruffles. matt and i both liked anne hathaway's dress. what did you think? >> one of my favorites of the evening. this really spoke to the one trend i did notice is that the carpet felt more modest, covered up. the long-sleeved gowns. >> what about that one? >> that's the exception. we don't stare at the back much

but when the girls turned around, whoa, what a statement a bare back can make. she looked like an old hollywood siren, just gorgeous head to toe. i loved the shoulder pads. she looked beautiful. it was armani. >> if somebody was making a list of how people looked last night, natalie portman, who is pregnant -- and there's a red carpet challenge. how do you think she did? >> so much pressure. all eyes on natalie. her fans would be so excited. this was still so her. it was fun to see everybody step out on the carpet. when you saw the unexpected red applique on the viktor & rolf gown it was a nice combo. she did well. she always pulls it off as herself. i really liked the dress. some people were unsure, but i think she hit it out of the park. >> she looked so happy wearing it. we have emma stone who is a newcomer to the golden globes. she was nominated for "easy a."

hal, what did you think? she wore color. >> i thought she looked sensational. she's a newcomer. i saw "easy a" on the plane coming over and i was knocked out by her. she has a great whiskey and soda voice and yet she showed up in a transformation with the hair blond for the shooting of "spider-man" and the calvin dress is so clean, so simple and modern. once again, very little jewelry. sorry, jewelers. but she looked young and smart and like the next generation of hollywood which is what i think all these young stars should do instead of emulating older stars. >> bobbie, let's bring it back to you. >> i want the viewers to know what you were doing. matt is shaking his head going, oh, yes. >> i love simple. i'm not a ruffles person. i think that's simple and stunning. >> less is more. this is a big trend you will see this year. minimalism will be huge. a lot of people have seen

overembellished looks and this is fresh. >> hayley steinfeld is 14 years old. how do you dress in a way that's appropriate for 14 and appropriate for an event with great tradition in hollywood? >> imagine the pressure on her parents. your 14-year-old is going to the golden globes. she nailed it. this was so age appropriate. the ponytail was youthful and fresh. she looked clean. this is going to be such a great picture for her to look back on. she's on point completely. >> let's speed it up a little bit. scarlett johansson. >> loved her nod to the vintage look. she was in ellie saab. a lot of people were surprised by the hairdo. it was avant-garde. i thought it was fun to see this -- once we get footage of her, i hope. it was a vintage dress -- vintage-inspired. >> there you go. >> it was a fashion-forward hairdo. i liked that she went different. i loved the hair. some didn't. i really liked it.

>> hal, i hope the control room is following. let's talk about january jones, one of the stars of "mad men." what did you think of the bright red dress? >> the bright red versace. that sure got your attention. she had seen it on versace's runway in blue. she's one of the new faces for versace for the ad campaign. she asked for it in red. i think it worked about 80%. i think maybe it was cut possibly a little bit too low. she's very thin. maybe a little bit too low, but the hair and makeup were sleek and went with it nicely. i wish there was a little bit -- i think the panelling on the sides could have been taken in more and it would have fit her better. >> halle berry, another risque dress. >> as al said, i don't think al noticed the dress at all. she's so ridiculously beautiful and, yes, it's like the dress

♪ this morning on "eat smart today" how healthy is your bread? you would think it would be easy, but with so many choices if you don't know what you're doing your diet could be toast. nutritionist and today contributor joy bauer is here to explain it. >> that was good. >> thank you. i have never thought of bread as being healthy for you. i don't know. i always thought it was something you would eat and it puts pounds on you. is that wrong? >> bread is healthy, particularly whole grain. if you eat a diet rich in whole grains like whole wheat bread it is linked to less heart disease, diabetes. one of the simplest swaps people can make to the diet is to get rid of the white bread and embrace whole grain breads. >> we'll find out if some are healthy or not. when you talk about whole grains and for as long as i know you, you have said get whole grains

into the diet. is bread the way to get it into the diet or other ways? >> there are a lot of ways. brown rice, quinoa, but whole wheat flour is a key way and that's what whole grain bread is made of. >> we are looking at labels here. we see wheat on the label. is that what we are looking for? >> no. that's what gets confusing. people think wheat and wheat flour is automatically healthy. they think it is whole wheat flour. if you have the word wheat, look at the label. if it's not preceded by the word "whole," it's basically junkie white refined flour. it's been stripped of all the goodness that whole grains have to offer. >> another word some people look for and you see a lot "unbleached." what does that mean? >> the nice thing about unbleached is it's not as processed but, matt, if you have unbleached wheat flour you are basically eating unbleached white, junk flour. it's not a bargain for your body. >> let's talk about multi grain.

is that what i'm looking for? >> multi grain, stone ground, those are descriptive words. tonight let it sway your options. >> go ahead. >> these are stellar whole grain varieties on the market. the nice part is the companies really do the work for you. they stamp right on the front, 100% whole wheat or 100% whole grain. that's the signal that all the grains in the bread are healthy. arnold, martin's, even martin potato bread comes in whole wheat. pep ridge farm, nature's pride. >> should we look for calorie counts? >> it's a good start for people just to buy whole grain or wheel wheat bread. for sticklers for calories or looking to curb the carbs, there are great products to reduce the calories per slice. 40 to 50 calories per slice. we have arnold's, nature's own, pepperidge farm and weight watchers, but the main stream

companies make both varieties, wheat, white varieties. >> i'm going to skip forward to newer products out there in the market. i know you like these a lot. we have things like thins and flats and rounds. right? >> i love them. again, they come in both varieties, but when you look at the package and buy one that's 100% whole grain not only are they delicious and healthy, but the bottom and top slice equal a slice of bread. so you cut the carbs, calories and shower your body with whole grains. >> in a few seconds left, we have people trying to go gluten-free. what does that mean when buying bread? >> gluten-free breads are difficult to get in 100% whole grain. they become dry, but the brands up here, energy, foods for life, julian's bakery all have a decent amount of brown rice flour. these are good options for people. >> bottom line, we should have bread in the diet? >> bread is okay. moderate the amount you eat.

of moisture left over in the bay area atmosphere. as a result, we have really patchy, dense fog this morning. the national weather service issued a dense fog advisory for the entire bay area until 11:00 a.m. as a result. as we head into the afternoon, the sun will make an appearance. mostly sunny skies and temperatures rounding out into the 60s. 65 up in santa rosa and 63 degrees in morgan hill. as we head through the rest of the week, a lot of people don't have to work today but they will be joined by warm temperatures. 68 degrees as you return to work on tuesday. 62 for wednesday. down in the 50s at the end of the week. have a great holiday. and now a couple of stories we're following. a woman and her dog are dead after a hit-and-run in concord. it happened just before 6:00 near avon avenue. the 53-year-old woman walked into the roadway because of some issue with her dog. both were struck by a teenage boy driving southbound on solano

way. as a teenager checked on the woman, a second car hit her. police are searching for that second driver. oakland's police chief could be headed south this winter for a new job in san jose. anthony bass says he is one of two finalists for the job of top cop in san jose. the other finalist is chris moore. recruited to oakland with a fully backed police force has seen them go from 800 to 667th past year. oakland's crime rate has dropped steadily. a decision on the new chief is expected by early next month. more local news coming up in about 30 minutes. we'll see you again at 10:26.

months in advance that was never meant to have been. we went to florida. our dear friends had given us as frank's big birthday present last august a trip to donna karan's home in the turks and cacos. they were going to fly us in and have a birthday bash. three weeks ago we read in the newspaper that the airstrips was out of commission and nobody could go in. we said to them at this time that we have a lovely place sitting right in the keys and we'll all go there. in the meantime, they had a serious illness in their family and frank and i are looking at each other like, i've taken the days off, there was a huge snowstorm coming and we still sort of like each other, let's go. we flew in and it was 80 degrees and gorgeous. went down to our dock and watched the sun come down and i had bambino in my arms and we're all just going like this that we get a call that our daughter,

breakfast for dinner. with three new breakfast lovers dishes, who needs a break from breakfast? denny's. america's diner is always open. we're back with a look at the joy fit club and induction of the newest members. >> jen and keith moore are married from rochester, new york, and each of them lost more than 100 pound. before we meet them, let's take a look at their story. >> i was 20 years old when i first met keith. both of us were overweight growing up, so when we met, we knew we had found our kin dread spirits in each other. >> our first year of dating we spent most of the time eating out at restaurants. >> neither of us gave a thought to nutrition and we would consume 2,000 to 3,000 calories per meal. >> after we got marry, the bad eating habits continued.

i worked long hours inm/o retai and we would be too tired and lazy to bother with a healthy dinner. >> keith and i both loved food and used it to fix all of life's problems. bad day at work, we would order a pizza and wings and get a 64-ounce soda from 7-eleven. >> we tried a few fad diets but they never worked. at my heaviest i was 288 pounds. >> and i was a whopping 285 pounds. september of 2009 was my turning point after a visit to the amusement park. too fat to go on a ride with my daughter, i was asked to get off. i vowed that my next year, i would return and be the hot mom. >> i was a little skeptical when jen started her weight loss journey again, except this time i saw something different in her. i saw her approaching it in a balanced way. nothing extreme, no fad diets. >> i refused to even use the word "diet." it was my lifestyle change. i became active and taught miefz how to hoop dance. >> i didn't get the whole hooping workout at first until i tried it out and then i was also hooked.

>> we set up a food plan together and held each other accountable with our new lifestyle change. we focused on organic, natural foods and cut out the processed foods from our diet. >> making the lifestyle change together has been so incredible. >> it's brought us closer together as a couple as well as a family. >> wow. >> we're going to meet jen and keith in just a second but we're here with the leader of the pack, joy bauer. so what were their issues, joy? >> what i love about jen and keith's story is it really illustrates how has a couple habits are contagious in both directions. >> they're enabling. >> so i'm going to show you the extreme. negative habits. this is what they would order at a restaurant together when they were gaining weight. each their own appetizers, each their own entrees, lots of soda and dessert and they would finish it all off. over 9,000 calories. so now they make their relationship work towards their advantage. they get a huge salad with feta and chicken and light vinaigrette.

they each have a whole grain roll. about 940 calories and they split it. >> we've got to meet them, okay. >> okay. >> we have a couple of minutes. now, this is jen and this is keith. and these are their before pictures. all right. come on, jen, let's see. >> looking good, mama. looking good. >> let's look at keith's before picture. now, you look hot, by the way, jen. you look really, really good. let's check out your husband's before picture. all right, keith, let's see the new you. >> wow! you guys look terrific. so in the beginning, keith, you said you were skeptical when jen said, hey, she wanted to try to lose weight. what were you skeptical about? >> just we've done it so many times before, it was just like, oh, here we go again. >> it's another try. >> yeah. >> but you had your aha moment. that must have crushed you when they made you get off the ride

with your child. >> yeah, it was terrible. it was so embarrassing. >> it turned out to be a wonderful thing. >> it was. it was a hall walker mome-- halk moment. >> in addition to cutting down the amount of food that you eat, were you able to work exercise into your routine? i know you're both very busy. >> i started hooping and it was just 15 minutes a day. >> she's a certified hoop nautica instructor. >> burns a lot of calories and keith is a personal trainer. >> how long did it take you guys? >> about a year. >> a year. >> 235 pounds in one year. >> this time next year, people watching could be living a completely different life if you do whati] they do. >> your daughtere1 is right the. >> yes. >> is that who you hadçó to get off the ride for? oh. congratulations. >> thank you. >> so if you guys know someone who you think should be considered for a spot in the joy
