tv Today in the Bay NBC January 18, 2011 6:00am-7:00am PST
6:00 am
in washington today. good morning, everybody. a foggy day across the bay area. we have a pretty clear shot right here of the bay bridge with a little bit of wind that could move the fog out. we'll sort all that out for you today, january 18th, "today in the bay." good morning, everybody. it is straight up 6:00. i'm brent cannon. i'm laura garcia-cannon. we are looking at the forecast. there's a lot of fog to watch out for, christina. yes, that fog will definitely impact our forecast later on today for the place that is get socked in all day. for instance, san francisco, you'll probably see a good deal of fog throughout the day. 47 degrees now. by noon we are talking about the 50s. 54 degrees in san jose. and the places that will get the most sunshine today will end up in the 60s. 64 for santa rosa. we'll let you know what's to
6:01 am
come for the rest of this short workweek coming up. back to you guys. we'll go to the bay bridge where you are talking about fog. i told my kids that's when clouds come down to visit us. they are coming down to the east bay visiting all the roadways. that is causing slick roadways as well with a misting condition. the bay bridge is smooth with volume increasing on the eastern side near san francisco. and out of san francisco the map shows a disabled bus located here at the essex street on-ramp. the on-ramp is open with activity there. nobody is on the transit bus there. we'll let you know when that clears from the roadway. a smooth drive down the peninsula but the san mateo bridge and dumbarton bridges have the last remaining fog advisories issued overnight by chp. our own marla tellez is out there with great news for drivers. >> reporter: good morning to you, mike. yes, that's right, this is one of the places you are going to find some fairly heavy fog this morning. we are just above 101 right off the marsh road exit. we made our way up from the
6:02 am
station in san jose this morning. this is 101. some areas are hit, but once you hit palo alto you will enter the fog zone. behind me the morning commute is picking up, but so far no problems to report. the headlights are heading south on 101. still, as you mentioned, the fog is expected to make this tuesday morning back to work commute less than ideal. according to christina loren, visibility is down to less than 200 feet in some areas. the fog is along 680 and the sunol grade. also on the san mateo and dumbarton bridges. it is expected to be the thickest at sun rise, so that's the heart of the commute. drive accordingly. the worst thing you can do is turn on the high beams. that only makes visibility worse. so use your low beams and fog lights today. of course, you are going to want to reduce your speed, slow it down and drive slower than you
6:03 am
typically do. it is misting out. use your wipers to help with the visibility issue. and in the thickest areas this morning, always use the right edge of the road as a guide. and a dense fog advisory is posted for much of the bay area through 11:00 this morning. now, as far as the airports are concerned, san jose international is reporting delays because of the fog. some flights heading to denver this morning are delayed just over an hour. as for sfo and oakland, no fog-related delays to report just yet, but always a good idea to check with the air carrier before you head to the airport today if you have a flight to catch. now, mike, i'm going to send it back to you with an interesting fog fact. one of the foggiest land areas in the entire world is in the bay area. but it is not san francisco that is famous for the fog. it is point rains rays. point rays gets 200 foggy days
6:04 am
per year. what do you think about that? >> i think that's incredible. folks around the bay area have to watch out for that. if you are in point rays, drive like you do 60% of the time. we'll send it back to the desk. thank you very much. >> in a half hour the first full day of trading since we have learned that apple's ceo steve jobs will take a medical leave of absence gets underway. >> scott mcgrew is looking at what might have happen as the second largest company gets ready for another shakeup at the top. >> reporter: again, here we go. certainly a lot of pressure on the stock this morning on this the first day after the news, but the first day the stock market can react. steve jobs announced he was stepping down on monday when the markets were closed for dr. king's birthday. apple is the largest tech company in the world. the second largest american company overall behind exxon-mobile. and it is not the only news being made today. the company reports profits after the bell. company officials will be on a conference call with reporters and analysts.
6:05 am
one idea that is not entirely crazy, what the if apple chose today to pay a dividend? the company is sitting on tens of billions of dollars with no lodge call way to spend it. shareholders would karg argue they own the profit as well. it is an interesting concept to throw out there as apple may make all kind of news this morning. >> it is interesting to watch that stock today. >> our team coverage out of that big news out of cupertino continues with bob redell. bob, it is impossible to escape apple's impact on our every day life with all the products we use today. >> reporter: yeah, absolutely. good morning to you, brent. it will be very telling when you hear the earnings report later today after hours. and during that earnings report it calls for a time of analysts and journalists to cover the
6:06 am
questions. it is very unlikely that the company will mention anything about steve jobs and his medical absence. a 50% jump in sales happened last quarter to $24 billion thanks to all the iphones and ipad that flew off the shelves in the holiday season. apple is expected to do well in the short-term without jobs running day-to-day operations. the iphone5 is reportedly already ready fog. we are told that 2011 is already in the bag. the long-term outlet is more of a question mark. investors are concerned because jobs hasn't mentioned a return date for his leave as he has done in the past. apparently his health has deteriorated the past few weeks only showing up at the office two to three times a week unable to keep his weight up and prone to colds and flus. he did take a leave in '04 when he was diagnosed with a rare form of pan creatic cancer and
6:07 am
again in '09 for a live transplant. what happens if he returns in a lesser role? right now c.o.o. tim cook is taking charge. this is the third time he's taking charge. he is not the showman jobs is but considered to be a very reliable steward of the company's day-to-day operations. could he be the kind of visionary steve jobs is? remember, as you e leaded eluded to, apple projects have not just changed consumer technology but arguably changed part of our culture as well. reporting in cupertino, bob redell, "today in the bay." thank you, bob. the nasdaq opens up at 6:30. we'll see if today's announcement does have an impact on the stock. the woman who says a group of college baseball players gang-raped her will get her day in court, but not the one she was hoping for. the civil suit against the eight players and the owner of the home where the incident occurred is moving forward.
6:08 am
last week defendants rejected paying a settlement of more than $9 million to the victim meaning there will be a hearing in civil court more than likely. criminal charges were never filed in the case because the district attorney said everyone involved in the 2007 incident had been drinking. the alleged victim says she cannot remember what happened and woke up the next morning in the hospital. the three who brought her there had to break into a room full of young men to get her. wayne sanchez's family says revenge is why the brother of jeanine harm shot and killed a man before taking his own life. harms disappeared without a trace in 2001. last saturday sanchez killed the main suspect in his sister's disappearance and then shot himself. sanchez was frustrated that the chief suspect maurice nasmeh was never held responsible for his sister's disappearance. nasmeh was charged for the disappearance of harms back in 2007 and he spent two years in

jail and later walked away a free man. the harms' investigation still continues with fibers of a rug belonging to her were collected for top analysis. the woman let go after aid milting to stealing drugs from the san francisco police department is facing a separate drug possession charge. in march police say they found .09 grams of cocaine during a search of madden's san mateo home. she is free on $10,000 bond and has pleaded not guilty. a local university is on high alert this morning after threats of violence. a few classes have been canceled at uc santa cruz. and some students vowed to stay home today. the move is in response to graffiti found in a campus bathroom last month threatening violence on the campus today. the university warned students about the threat via e-mail last week. the e-mails asked students to
6:10 am
stay vigilant and to report anything suspicious to campus police. police say there will be increased security measures today and university employees have been trained on how to properly respond to violence. the time is coming up on 6:10. we want to check in with mike inouye tracking our traffic. one of the big questions is the fog. >> yeah, at some point during the morning commute you will see misty conditions and wet roadways because of the dense fog in many areas. the tri-valley will get hit coming out of stockton. and also out of the altamonte pass we have a 17-minute drive. we have seen the speeds start to slow 40 minutes ago. they will continue to slow. a bit of a break coming through livermore and coming down approaching the airport. there's slow spots for 580 contributing to the slowdown there. we'll move you now further north. through antioch we have slow driving here coming across into lovers boulevard where things cleared there. a live look at the upper bay

bridge, you can see a building up at the toll plaza with no metering lights yet. look at this horrible view of the san mateo bridge. you can barely see the lights. that's causing an issue. we can see the fog advisory there. >> or can you see it? >> take it away! good morning to you. yeah, pretty dense fog out there this morning. you are not going to see all cities across the bay area dealing with the dense, patchy fog. the best situation is in the south bay, but you will encounter the dense fog along the peninsula where you are seeing severe fog this morning. you are down to 100 feet in some spots along the peninsula this morning. heading throughout the afternoon these temperatures now starting out in the 40s will rebound into the 60s.
6:12 am

rejected by their carriers altogether. 1/5 to 1/2 of people under 65 had health issues that faced the same dilemma. ailments ranged from cancer to chronic illnesses such as heart disease, asthma and high blood pressure. figures show the nation's four largest private health carriers denied coverage to about 650,000 people based on their medical history between 2007 and 2009. later on today the house is going to consider a republican bill to repeal the new health care system. it is a devastating situation in australia today where flooding continues in many parts of the country. there's also another report of another death as a result of the floodwaters. police in victoria state say today they recovered the body of a missing 8-year-old boy. they say that boy fell into the floodwaters after playing on a boat with his siblings. hundreds of homes are cut off from the rest of the country due to all the massive flooding. the victoria state region is
6:18 am
getting ready for more flooding over the next 24 hours. to give you an idea how much flooding has occurred so far, the area the size of france and germany combined remains completely under water right now. the best birthday ever in brazil. 22-year-old martello is rescued after being buried under mud for 16 hours. he was saved on his present. he was the victim of a massive mud slide north of rio de janeiro. after several hours of digging rescue crews almost gave up but then they heard muffled sounds coming from below. they reached him after three hours and took him to a nearby hospital where he's recovering in intensive care. amazing. the stock market gets its first crack at shares of apple this morning. a day after the company's ceo announced to step down again for health reasons. >> scott mcgrew is joining us with this announcement that was carefully timed. >> reporter: right.
6:19 am
the co con olg is this. today apple has to face tough questions from reporters and analysts as they report profits. monday is the perfect day to make the announcement that the ceo is stepping down at least temporarily as stock markets were closed. steve jobs is saying it is for his health. we do know he's been battling liver cancer on and off for years. now, this departure this time raises many of the same questions it did last time. mainly how much do we the public have a right to know about a private person's health? reasonable arkts both ways that jobs has a right to privacy but he's also very closely tied to the economic health of that company. and the company has to be very careful to be legally very straightforward when it is answering some of the questions. those will come at 2:00 our time as apple reports its profits. we expect an absolute blowout quarter. we'll have a lot more for you throughout the day. >> yeah, big numbers to report.
6:20 am
we are still waiting to see what the stock is actually going to do today. you might soon find a few cheaper flights if you fly out of a sfo. sfo may slash its operating fees for airlines that fly to and from mexico. the airport commission will vote to cut rates by 33%. the idea is it will bring in more competition to the airport. this could also be good news for san francisco businesses. the city's travel association says international tourists stay in the city longer and spend more money. we want to see if people are getting out and about this morning. there's fog to muck up your way a little bit. it will slow things down for sure. >> that's a pleasant way to put it, laura. things can get a little messed up. you are going to have one of the
6:21 am
lanes blocked by a disabled vehicle. we have a big tow truck here trying to get this bus out of the way. it was out of service or not in capacity. on that bridge itself, the lower deck is moving smoothly out of the city and over to oakland. but then coming out of oakland you see the slowing of the incline. that's the reason they turn the metering lights on. the entire area approaching is likely to have foggy and misty conditions. keep that in mind to lower your speeds on the roadways this morning because of potential slippery areas. a live look at the toll plaza shows you that once the metering rights lights are turned on things will slow down. no major issues but we'll probably see more clouds later this morning. >> i think we should go to little miss sunshine. >> i thought you were little miss sunshine, laura garcia-cannon. you bring the light in my life. good morning to you. things are looking good along the peninsula where you can't see a darn thing. san mateo, still checking in
6:22 am
with 100 feet of visibility or less. you really want to take it easy out there. you are probably used to driving in the fog. give yourself extra time so you don't have to rush out the front door in the fog. we are looking pretty good heading to the next couple of hours. i think that the situation is going to get a little bit worse before it gets better, especially in the south bay where we have clear conditions for the most part right now. i think you'll get socked in closer and closer to sunrise. in an hour from now, it will be 7:22 a.m. high pressure is in control of our forecast making for a pretty nice second half of the day. temperatures will max out in the lower 60s. the places to get the most sunshine will be the warmest. san jose, 63 degrees. a lit warmer for the north bay as well. changes on the way with not as much fog tomorrow as we have clouds pushing into the area. that will keep things more moderate overnight. so not as much fog for tomorrow. and a nice second half of the day slated throughout the day. 44 in santa cruz. turning to the 60s, 62 degrees

good morning, everybody. the time is 6:25. a live look outside at the golden gate brim. the good news is we can actually see it because of all the fog we have had in the bay area this morning. but there are still some patchy spots out there to watch out for. we'll have updates in a few more minutes. that morning cup of joe might be giving women an added health boost. the ucla study found coffee appears to bolster a protein found in women that regulates sex hormones. that protein also protects them from diabetes. researchers say women who drank four cups of coffee a day were less likely to develop diabetes than those who didn't drink coffee. former vice president dick cheney says barack obama is going to be a one-term president. in an exclusive interview on the "today" show this morning cheney says obama's approach to expanding the government and deficit health care plan which he expects to be repealed to lead to the president losing the 2012 election. the 69-year-old is opening up

good morning to you. we have a lot of fog out there, but it is kind of moving around. it is not staying put. and these numbers have been all over the place throughout the morning. so just count on reduced visibility basically wherever you head this morning. it is one of those mornings where everywhere is seeing widespread fog. and that will be the case probably until about 9:00 a.m. then it will start to lift above the highways and roadways making for better driving conditions. but it is going to take until 1:00 p.m. when we actually see the sunshine, especially over the south bay today. high pressure firmly in control of our weather pattern. for us that means we'll see a foggy start and fair skies for the second half of the day. then changes on the horizon heading deeper into the workweek. less in terms of fog, more clouds overnight. and that will keep things nice and mild. right now 45 degrees in oakland. 44 degrees in san mateo. heading throw this afternoon, bumping numbers up into the 60s. 62 degrees in redwood city

good morning, everybody. it is 6:45. we are keeping tabs on the fog this morning. a little fog watch. it depends on where you are. it could be clearing out. it is not as thick as pea soup, but overall it is looking like a nice day once it burns off. we'll get the very latest coming up. congresswoman gabrielle giffords' condition continues to improve. doctors at the medical center in

tucson say she could be released to a long-term rehabilitation center in a few days. her higher brain function seems to be coming back as she was recently able to reach out and hold on to her husband. this past weekend doctors performed two surgeries on her to clear her airway and relieve pressure on her eyes. giffords is not able to speak at the moment due to that surgery. despite the tragedy, congresswoman giffords' seat could be in trouble. an arizona law says if a public official is unable to perform their duties for three consecutive months, a special election could take place. but legal analysts say only congress can make that decision. recent court cases struck down any attempts to remove public officials through state laws. well, there's an impact from the shooting that local businesses did not expect. stores at that shopping center where it all happened are seeing at least a 70% drop in customers. investigators have limited access to that shopping center so that they can gather evidence
