yesterday because we are lacking the fog. that's great news and temperatures are going to climb under the sunshine, 66 degrees for san jose, 65 in gilroy and 67 in santa rosa. we'll let you know how long this is expected to last. back to you. >> good news that we don't have the fog this morning. at least that's making the commute easier. >> much more pleasant than yesterday where it was tough to see. throughout bay area this morning a clearer view. out to a view of the accident that i am told about, south bound 680. reports of a two-car accident in the middle lane. ambulance has been called off so that's better. minor injury at most. should be moved to the shoulder but there may be slowing off highway 4ment we'll watch tor that. that's all right. through concord, the real slowdown through antioch. we have speeds in the 20s as you head over and a little through pittsburg and bay point. westbound out of the altamont

pass, into livermore, by north livermore avenue moving closer to 60 than 50. that will continue to build. >> thank you very much. here is a story you can help on this morning. a statewide manhunt is under way. police are looking for a 4-year-old boy and his abductor who is considered armed and dangerous. authorities say the two actually know each other and they could be headed to san jose. marla joins us with more. >> reporter: laura, good morning. the abduction happened in stanislaus county in paterson which is about 85 miles east of san jose. now, at first officials thought the two could be headed to san jose but since this amber alert was issued the california highway patrol has expanded its search too include all of california. the boy is 4-year-old juliani cardenas. he is 3 feet 6 inches tall, 40 pounds with black hair and brown

eyes. officials say his abductor is 27-year-old jose esteban rodriguez, he is the ex-boyfriend of the boy's mother. he's 5'9", 180 pounds, black hair and brown eyes. he does have an extensive criminal history and including a conviction for manslaughter. we are learning this morning that the boy's mother is 8 months pregnant with the abductor's baby. as you can imagine, she is distraught. the two are believed to be in a silver toyota corolla with california license plate 6 hbw 445. if you are driving on a major freeway you'll likely see this on a message board. it is posted state wide. any one with information about the abduction of juliani cardenas is asked too call the stan is law county sheriff's

department. 209-380-6015. reporting live in san jose, marla tellez. >> thank you, marla. let's hope they find that little boy do. what you can to help if you see anything suspicious. >> south bay city considered one of the safest is fighting to keep its reputation after having six homicides in two weeks. leaders say that violent stretches of crime is an unfortunate coincidence and not a trend. officers are going to step up patrols and try to crack down on gangs. mayor chuck reed says it's crucial to try to avoid cuts especially to the police department. budget concerns may force the city to lay off a fifth of the police force right now there are about 1200 officers on the police force. >> a community meeting in palo alto in hopes of bringing

about a dozen robbers to justice. there have been 20 robberies during the past four months in the usually quiet neighborhood, so far palo alto police made arrests of eight suspects. the department will host a meeting at 7:00 at the theater on littlefield road, offering up to a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. >> uc santa cruz breathing a sigh of relief after threats of violence on campus did not happen. the university was on high alert after a student discovered graffiti in a bathroom that suggested there would be violence yesterday. the university did add extra police but nothing unusual happened. the university police are asking students and faculty to remain on alert and report anything suspicious they might see. >> a judge will allow a controversial electronics device planted by police to be used in a murder trial that left an oakland journalist dead.

data from the device shows the car was parked outside the apartment of chauncey bailly hours before bailey was killed. this after bailey had denied going to bailey's amount. bay, the former ceo of a bakery is charged with ordering two men to kill bailey to stop him from writing about the bakery's financial troubles. bay's lawyers argue electronic tracking is a violation of privacy. >> lawmakers fight a state plan they say would eliminate the tools they have to jump start the economy. the council will hold an emergency meeting to deal with the governor's proposed budget plan which would cut off redevelopment funds. his plan calls for $5 billion in property taxes to go to schools and basic services instead of to redevelopment agencies. more than a dozen california cities facing similar things we told you about richmond, so they are also holding similar meetings over the next couple of

days. >> still facing tough times, not just on the show but scott says california feeling positive about the future. that's good news. >> yes, it is. particularly, laura, northern california, a study from citibank says mostly of us expect our personal finances and the general economy to get better in 2011. 76% in the bay area rate the state as excellent or at least a good place to live. and 60% in the bay area believe this year is going to be a lot better than last year. the attitude sours a bit as you move south. down in l.a., the positive attitude is harder to find. well, thinking of a bright future, apple the company broke all sales records, 78% gain in profits. so, think about it this way. three months ago when we thought apple was an amazing business story, today it's 78% more amazing than that. all kinds of numbers you can drill down to. one that takes me aback is that

the company sold 7 million ipads in three months. not only is that an extraordinary business, it has a lot to do with all of the content that people are making out there, for every ipad app maker out there you are gaining 7 million customers every the months. for people who are not writing to the ipad you're losing 7 million customers. >> pretty amazing. >> it's 6:08. mexican president calderon will be the speaker for the grd waiting class. he was elected in 2006. he will speak at the annual commencement schedule forward june 12 at stamford stadium. the president was chosen because of his experience leading a nation that is highly connected to the bay area and california. >> an executive is hitting the brakes to make muni workers pay to park at work.

it included a $55 fine for workers who park at muni job sites. the board chairman withdrew that proposal at the start of tuesday's meeting claiming employees were upset with that proposed parking fee, a lot saying they didn't have transportation options because they work overnight shifts. if the fee was approved and muni officials expected to generate $1.3 million every year for the cash strapped agency. the board could revisit that proposal coming up in the next few weeks. >> i want to check with mike. a new accident. this involves a motorcycle. >> always raising a red flag. motorcycle involved, got an update saying that it's just a property damage issue so even though the motorcycle was brushed by a car, the person walking around, the ambulance has been called off. still slowing because of a lot of activity. northbound 280 at monterey

boulevard out of daly city into the 101/280 interchange. look at the sensors. 65 is the speed limit but obviously the 70s show you a clear flow into the city off of the peninsula. out of the east bay a nice smooth drive. no backups now, no major slowing approaching 580, 24 and into the east shore freeways. nice travel time. the toll plaza live shot we see a few more cars but nothing big. back to you. >> we'll check back in a bit. thanks. >> we also want to check your forecast. those are pretty good numbers. >> it looks like they are going to hang around. we don't have rain in the forecast. strong high pressure dominating the weather pattern for the entire state. temperatures in the l.a. area have been close to 85 degrees over the past couple of days. we're not going to be that warm but we'll see temperatures in the upper 60s. high pressure firmly in control.

you can see the clouds coming in, the high and mid level clouds, what's happening with that is they are helping to prevent the formation of fog and keeping temperatures more mild in the places that are getting the cloud cover. but what i am noticing is that the clouds are starting to push off shore so we could see patchy fog, particularly in the north bay and along the peninsula this morning. this is what we expect in terms of your temperatures. winds are going to keep things mild as well. they are pretty strong in san francisco now, the northwest, sustained at 14 miles per hour. but the winds are helping to prevent that fog formation as well. we've got mild temperatures now turning warm by this afternoon. talking about the 60s. you take your lunch break we're close to that. and then this is where we end up later. 66 in san jose. back to you guys. >> another day of sun. 6:11. still to come, some heroes will be back again. we'll tell you who signed up for another season. >> president obama is meeting

warmer to start, overnight lows getting close, 45, 50, and then the highs in the 60s. but christina says there might be places knocking on 70. we'll check in with her coming up. >> a change of direction for an east bay city. livermore city council wants to change the speed limit. bob redell is live in livermore with a look at some of the details there. >> reporter: good morning, to you, brent. you soon might be able to put the pedal to the metal here. what a city engineers are recommending is that the city council adopt new speed limits, a raise, on 20 segments of road. first it's got to go before the public. there will be a meeting tonight. i'll have more on that shortly. but the bay area news group is reporting that the city is considering raising the speed limit by 5 miles an hour on 19 sections, 10 miles an hour on a

20th section, and reducing speeds on six. the city is supposed to specify the exact location of these proposed changes later today. >> i don't feel like you are slowed down too much? >> no. >> raising them? >> wrong. >> because? >> it's appropriate the speed now. >> safety concern for you? >> uh-huh. and i have kids. my daughter is starting to drive. >> reporter: now city engineers didn't come up with these proposed recommendations without -- just out of the blue. the state requires cities to re-examine through a random sample of the true speeds drivers are driving. let's say they have an average of 34 miles an hour. in the old days the new speed limit would be rounded down to 30 miles an hour. but because of recent changes in the law, that limit must be

rounded up, so in this example 34 is 35. hence the reason we're seeing recommendations for 20 increases in the speed limit again on various segments throughout town. those haven't been specified yet. that's supposed to happen later today. the meeting tonight for the public here in livermore to show up at city council chambers, 6:00, this is your chance to let the city know exactly how you feel about this. it wouldn't be until later that this would go before the city council for approval, their vote up or down. reporting live in livermore, bob redell, today in the bay. >> 6:17. george gascon has a new party affiliation. the new district attorney changed his party affiliation from republican to democrat. just days ago. about 16% of san francisco are registered republicans.

g gasgon parted ways over immigration. >> we have a right to control our borders, but i think also we have to have a better understanding of the impact on the civil rights of people. >> at the end of that interview with cheryl hurd, gascon will run for district attorney in november. he plans to make his mark reorganizing the d.a.'s office and developing community courts. >> san francisco police are kicking off the year of the rabbit helping shoppers avoid predators in china town. police and representatives from the district attorney's office will hand out crime prevention tips in china town. store owners get tips on preventing burglary and extortion. shoppers will be given a pact with information about fraud and scams. >> many are on the move in china headed to their hometowns for

celebrations. some $2.5 billion will travel on the train system to mark the start of the year of the rabbit. or the year of the hare. one rail official says it will be impossible to keep up with passenger demand. in addition to overcrowding the system, bad weather in the form of snow and sleet could jeopardize plans for millions to travel. >> china's president is kicking off a four-day visit to the united states, meeting with president obama right now. we have a live look at the pair together at the white house. in addition to meeting with the president he is going to meet with top ceos to talk about making it easier for china and the united states to do business. representatives from chinese companies will also attend. >> who can demonstrate, here is a way by our investment we are keeping americans employed, that would have a significant

political benefit. >> china's president will be the guest of honor at a state dinner. a lot call that event inappropriate given china's record on human rights. many executives that will be there at the white house are from northern california. scott mcgrew reports on silicon valley's influence. >> intell chief, ironically has been an outspoken opponent of the obama administration. you have also got ceos from others as well. a prime subject will be currency in these meetings. many americans accuse china of keeping a currency artificially low and china accuses us of the same thing. frankly, both sides are probably right. it's important because you don't want to have the more valuable currency. it makes your expeorts more

expensive. absent is apple. we learned yesterday that apple signed a long term $4 billion deal with a component company to build something, we don't know quite what, but the suspicion is it's new displays and it's a chinese deal. apple has to buy parts like flash memories or screens the way mcdonald's has to buy potatoes, in huge quantities and they have to secure the material early. it does no good if they come up with a great idea and then don't have the little pieces they need to build it. they can't build it as fast as people want it. >> what a problem to have. thank you very much. 6:21. off air and on the web. finding out more about the end to kuss, the college radio station with a cult-like following. it went off the air yesterday. the university of san francisco sold the license for 90.3 fm but

did not tell the deejay or the staffers. the station was known for introducing local underground music. it's moving to an online format. the university will make $3.5 million if the fcc approves the sale. >> i want to keep you posted on what's going on on your morning commute. >> a lot of cars. 580, the tri-valley commute. we're looking at 16 minutes, a typical pattern for wednesday coming through the altamont pass and livermore slowing into as well as past highway 84. a lot of folks cut through. right around the bypass or maybe on the bypass reports of an accident there, and it might affect you off of highway 4, down to brentwood and discovery bay. antioch you have the volume slowed and again for pittsburg, bay point. smooth through the walnut creek interchange. off the banesian.

the cash lanes, no metering lanes yet. look at the live shot of the upper deck. the camera shakes. we have a clear view. it might be breezy. back to you. >> thank you very much. >> checking the forecast, one of the bright spots this morning. looking forward to a nice day. >> oh, yes, that big bright spot that is the sun, it will shine abundantly over the bay area. this morning we have winds and clouds preventing the formation of fog so we're starting out pretty comfortable in san francisco. northwest wind at 14 miles per hour. take a look at where we have calm wind, livermore and gilroy, two of the coldest cities now at 36 in gilroy and 40 in livermore. throughout the day today the sun will be out in probably an hour and a half or so. once it comes out it's going to warm us up. by noon we're in the mid-60s in

the north bay, 63 at noon in napa. 64 in fairfield. we're going to see temperatures really breathing down the neck of 70 degrees today in san jose. 66, you hit 67 yesterday in san jose, 65 for gilroy and 61 degrees in santa cruz. as we head to the next few days not a lot in terms of change. doesn't feel like winter. 67 degrees by friday. that's 10 degrees above our average high for this time of the year. enjoy it today. maybe take the kids to the park. they are a handful. >> you know, we did and we think it's going to make them tired >> didn't work.nit. >> didn't work. new this morning an officer-involved shooting in the east bay leaves one man dead. this morning police are saying that man is a parolee at large who had a loaded gun on him. that story straight ahead. >> a dangerous discovery in a storage unit causes chaos. there are unanswered questions for investigators this morning. >> we'll take a look at our clear and warm day. what a beautiful hive look

outside. bay bridge this morning. it's wednesday, january 19, today in the bay. >> good morning everybody. thanks for joining us. time now is 6:30. i'm brent cannon. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. i want to check in with christina loren with a look at the forecast. another nice one. >> another nice one. we all have to go to work in. but that's okay. as you get off work today, i think you'll make your commute home under a brilliant sky. we're going to see clear skies all the way throughout the day today. and temperatures are going to be warm. 52 degrees now in san francisco. by noon we're reaching the low 60s, even some mid-60s in the north bay, 64 degrees at noon in fairfield. maxing out around 3:00 p.m. at 66 degrees in san jose, 67 for los gatos and 65 in gilroy. we'll let you know when things are expected to change. we do see a little change on the

horizon so we'll talk about that coming up. back to you. >> i want to get updated on an accident mike was telling us about. a motorcycle involved. >> exactly. you hear that alarms go off we're worried about safety. the driver of the motorcycle all right. the ambulance has been called off. the accident still blocking lanes, causing slowing at monterey boulevard. out of daly city up to the 101/280 interchange. expect slowing. we do have slowing at the tail end of 280 and on the golden gate bridge and a disabled vehicle to watch for approaching the lower deck. at fourth they are removing that. the bay bridge, smooth except for the metering lights. this took seven minutes to build up. at the toll plaza backing up to the west grand avenue area. you also see the amber alert signs which there is more information on that. >> we want everyone to make note of it. before you hit the road this morning we have information on an amber alert in effect for

4-year-old boy who might end up being in the bay area. authorities say the boy is juliani cardenas, he was taken in paterson south of tracy yesterday afternoon. he's hispanic, black hair, brown eyes, last seen wearing dark pants and light blue shirt. the suspect is 27-year-old jose esteban rodriguez, 5'9", a white and black shirt, and checkered shorts when he allegedly took the boy. they were seen in a toyota, license 6 hbw 445. if you see anything, if you spot this car, call police. >> we also have new detail this is morning about an officer-involved shooting in the east bay. san pablo police say a traffic stop turned deadly. christie smith is live with the latest. >> reporter: good morning to you, brent. i got off the phone with police, they are releasinging more information. they tell me that the man who was shot and killed was a

33-year-old parolee at large. they say this started with a routine traffic stop on that corner over there. the car pulled into this gas station and that one man refused to do what police were saying. they say he pulled out a loaded gun. there was a chase, the man jumped over some pushes. all of this was with deadly consequences. this was about 8:15 last night near ventura by the casino. inside acura, a man and woman. the officer, he was by himself. check the driver's license of the driver. the man in the front seat got out. the officer tells him to get back in the car and instead throws it down and starts running around. the officer said that he could see the man reaching for his waist band. he yells at him to stop before shocking him with a taser. the guy starts running and there is a struggle.

>> the suspect to comply with his orders. the suspect then reached for his handgun in the waist band and the officer fired his weapon and struck the suspect. >> reporter: that officer did call for medical help but it was too late. the man died at the scene. he hasn't been identified yet but police do say he has an extensive criminal history. the two others in the car, they are cooperating with police still and the shooting is under investigation by three agencies, and that officer is on paid administrative leave which is routine in these circumstances. reporting live in san pablo, christie smith, today in the bay. >> thanks for the update. >> 6:34. what started as a drug bust ends with the discovery of five explosives. crews spent the night cleaning up gunpowder at the affordable storage unit on southbound 680

south of highway 4. contra costa county got a tip about possible drugs at the storage unit. when they came to check they found a back pack with five pipe bombs. if bomb squad stopped traffic while they used robot. two others were arrested for drug charges. >> the antioch man who brought the bay bridge to a stand still is going to go on trial next month. craig pleaded not guilty to charges including child endangerment, making a false bomb threat and brandishing a gun. a judge dropped kid mnapping because there was not enough evidence to prove he abducted his daughter who was with him at the time. the father was distraught over financial troubles and suspicions that his wife was

having an affair. he ended up surrendering to officers. >> seven district schools find out today why they are targeted for closure. a committee will present the recommendation at a special meeting. they have three scenario, each includes three schools. on the cutting block include, glenn brook middle, silver wood, holbrook, wren avenue, monta gardens and sequoia. trustees expect to vote on closures february 8. >> al davis has people talking. he met the press yesterday as he officially made hue jackson the raiders' new head coach. he also said he wants a new stadium and explained why he fined tom cable. davis says it started with the reports of an assault of a former assistant coach randy hansen in 2009. >> he knew i could have thrown

setting up. we don't have to deal with the dense fog we had monday morning. and it looks like a beautiful day in the bayment we have sunny skies courtesy of high pressure throughout the bay area. even places that traditionally get socked in with fog. san francisco, san mateo. that's going to make for comfortable temperatures, starting out mild. in several cities especially toward the coast, courtesy of cloud cover, and a little bit of wind as well. we've got winds sustained between 10 and 15 miles per hour at the immediate coast. keeping things mild. and that will be the case throughout the day. winds pick up substantially through tomorrow that could make for difficult driving in the mountain passes, that's tomorrow. we'll talk more about that. for today, let's enjoy these temperatures starting out in the 50s. 52 in san mateo, turning over to the upper 60s in the north and south bayed so. 65 degrees the forecast high in gilroy, 67 in fairfield and 67 degrees in santa rosa. it's one of those days where

you'll want to get outside. if you have the luxury to do so. 65 degrees, a little cooler tomorrow. we'll bump it up to 67 on friday and really because of the winds that we expect tomorrow, i don't think we're going to see a round of heavy fog so that's a great thing when it comes to driving to work in the morning. it can be tough when it's foggy out there. >> sure can. thanks a lot. a local fan favorite on the biggest loser is back in the bay area and giving back to the local community. she spent time at her hometown gym last night inspiring others to stick to their fitness goals. >> i had gotten so many -- sent me messages telling me they want my help and it's great to give back. pass along the information that i learned because i didn't have any one to help me. >> she is sticking by what she learned. she still works out every day,

>> welcome back. a live look outside. beautiful bay bridge this morning waiting for the sun to fully come up. going to be fantastic temperatures across the region. we'll check in with christina in a bit. >> one person is dead, several others injured by a natural gas explosi explosion and a camera was rolling. take a look. it is quite frightening. it happened in philadelphia. utility crews and firefighters

were at the building because people had called in to report a strong gas smell in the area just minutes before that explosion. that building was destroyed and another damaged. hard not to look and think of our own disaster here in the bay area, it's been more than four months since the utilities commission has yet to turn over documents related to the san bruno gas line explosion. attorneys are looking into whether misconduct played a role. it killed eight and destroyed 38 homes. the utility commission says it turned over hundreds of documents but insist that they cannot legally turn over others. >> i want to check in with mike, take a look at the traffic. >> good morning. talking about the gas explosion, this is in no way of the same magnitude but we have a report about a house fire.

he is 3'6", 40 pounds, black hair and brown eyes. his abductor is 27-year-old jose rodriguez, he is the ex-boyfriend of the boy's mother. 5'9", 180 pounds, black hair and brown eyes. authorities say he has an extensive criminal history including a conviction for manslaughter. we are learning the boy's mother is eight months pregnant with rodrigu rodriguez's baby. >> i didn't want to hear it. i didn't want to know what happened. i just want him back. >> reporter: the two are believed to be in a silver toyota with california plates 6 hbw 445. this information is posted on freeway message boards

representative giffords is one of two shooting suspects still in the hospital but another victim, susan hillman, got to go home. this is video from sunday when she was able to get outside of the hospital to attend a memorial. she is the neighbor of christina green who was killed. hillman took green to the giffords event because green was interested in politics and wanted to go to the meeting. >> chinese president hu jintao is in the u.s. starting with meeting with president obama and top ceos before a state dinner tonight. tracie potts with what the u.s. is hoping too gain from this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the official white house welcome wrapped up a few minutes ago. we heard both presidents speak and talk about cooperation between the two nations, the fact they are linked. president obama touched on the thorny issue of human rights

saying the rights of all should be respected. president hu jintao saying the two countries need to move forward while respecting each other's differences. they go into a private meeting and meet with ceos to talk about trade and how to open up the chinese markets to american companies. at issue, china's low currency making chinese distinguishes cheap, very difficult for american companies to compete. there will be chinese companies there talking about how they invested in the united states and created jobs. human rights is an issue. president obama is forced to address while they are here. it's a difficult issue between the two countries because they have serious differences. he is also expected to ask china to wield its influence over north korea and try to stop some of the provocative behavior. a lavish dinner is planned for

tonight for hu jintao. now let's go to scott mcgrew who is going to talk more about some of the economic implications of this visit. >> good morning. you certainly touched on the currency, that is a huge issue. remember china accuses us of keeping our currency artificially low. you don't want to be the guy with the valuable currency. that means your exports are that much more expensive. the ceo from intel will be there. he has been a critic of mr. obama but nonetheless is representing silicon valley. checking stocks, the dow industrials up slightly this morning, apple is up $4.59, about 1 1/3 percent. recovering a bit from yesterday. here's an interesting supreme court case for you. can a company be embarrassed? at&t does not want to release the public records under the freedom of information act because those records it says
