7:06 am
can you imagine how we would have navigated through the economic crisis if president obama had not been very forward leaning in working with the chinese both bilaterally and through the g 20 to try to chart a very steady course? we are recovering, making progress. we have a ways to go, but the world economy, thankfully, did not fall into the deeper recession and even depression that so many people worried about. >> two things. what needs to be accomplished over the next couple of days and if we don't get it right in terms of our policy vis a vis china could we be headed for another cold war which is what some predict could be happening? >> we hope to avoid that. we don't think that's in america's interest. we want to have an open trading system. we want to have a lot of interchanges between our countries. we'll be announcing additional people to people measures
7:07 am
because it is not just between governments. we want more cooperation on the economic front. we want to see more cooperation dealing with the thorny problem of north korea, its nuclear ambitions, its provocative behavior that's destabilizing northeast asia. and we want to continue to build those ties of understanding and trust. i think we have to chart a steady course and stay on it and never forget that we stand for american interests and american values. they stand for chinese interests and chinese values. we don't want a zero sum relationship. we want to look for as many win win opportunities as we can because this will determine the peace, stability and prosperity of the 21st century. >> i want to move onto something that former vice president cheney said on our program yesterday in an interview. he was asked about president obama's political future.

this is a little bit of what he had so say. >> his overall approach to expanding the size of government, expanding the deficit, those are weaknesses as i look at barack obama. i think he'll be a one term president. >> what's your response beyond the laughter? >> well, i am pleased that former vice president cheney is healthy and resuming public activities but i could not disagree with him more. i don't think that will surprise anyone who is watching your program, meredith. i think president obama has been playing the hand that he was dealt by the bush/cheney administration very well indeed, rescuing not just the american economy but the global economy, beginning to deal with a lot of our long term competitive challenges. so clearly it's a diametrically opposed view. >> will you be a one term secretary of state? >> oh, i am very pleased to be

radio and television host glenn beck spends most of his time on the air talking about ways to change the country. but behind the scenes he says he's discovered a way to change his own life and has overcome problems with alcohol, cocaine and thoughts of suicide. he teamed up with psychiatrist dr. keith ablow to write a book. good to have you here. good morning. thanks for sticking around. i know this is a very personal book. you open up about some of the problems. you were addicted to cocaine. you suffered with depression.
9:15 am
you were going through a divorce and alcoholism, thoughts of suicide even. >> you name it. been there. >> now you deal with it in this self-help book. how do you think writing this and admitting to some of the failures in your life will help others? >> the one thing i really learned on this journey really early on is because i was actually used to listen to me in connecticut when i was going through this. i'm that kind of guy. i admitted on the air some of this stuff. some of the worst things about me at the time when i was just starting to sober up. i think i was trying to sabotage my career. i was going to just be a chef. i just wanted out. what i did when i started really being honest, i didn't sabotage my career. i thought what people would hate me for, actually people didn't like me for, but they related. they said, oh, let me tell you, i have that, too. i'm doing this, too.
9:16 am
what i realized is we are all alike. we have different problems but we are all generally alike. when we can open up and talk to each other and really be honest and really search for the truth and just let the chips fall where they may, we can fix things. >> i know the turning point for you was what you say your darkest moment. christmas eve, 1996. you had just been divorced at the time. what happened in that exact moment that you said, i need to turn things around? >> i couldn't afford gifts for my kids. just not even at cvs. i felt like such an amazing failure. i had lost everything. i didn't even know how to fix any of it. i just knew i couldn't live this way anymore. i knew that i had caused all of my problems.
9:17 am
that was probably the worst thing. it's easy to blame somebody, hate somebody else for it. it's hard when you really go, this is me. this is my fault. >> the reckoning moment. >> it was the moment of, okay, so now what are you going to do? are you just going to end it or figure out what you have done wrong, try to make amends for it and change your life? i stood up on that night and as keith and i have talked, i kind of expected that i would feel better after i stood up. i didn't. it was like four years later that i was like, oh, crap, i still feel like this. it's a long journey. >> it's been a long journey for you. dr. ablow, the book deals with the seven wonders -- courage, faith, truth, compassion, friendship, family, and common sense. they seem like basic concepts. how do they really transform a life when you feel like you are basically at the bottom? >> it's the way to use them. first, focus on them because i think it's important to think of each independently, but they
9:18 am
play off of each other. so it's important to know that the first step that glenn took included a lot of doubt, a lot of fear. but he had courage. if people can find that, they come to my office for that. if they can find it in themselves through the book, and i believe they can, to take the first step and beyond that in faith to say, you know, i'm not journeying into confusion. there is actually a path for me. there is something i'm meant to do in this world. i'm meant to be loved and love other people and bring gifts to this world. those two things together are powerful. >> you were never glenn's therapist. >> no. i will not take responsibility. >> do you think he needs therapy though? >> you have to understand, from my perspective -- >> you had to overcome and are still overcoming. >> the most intelligent people on the face of the planet should be getting therapy if they can pay for it. can you? >> i don't know.
9:19 am
depends on how the book sells. to answer the question, do i need therapy? i happen to be wearing a shirt without it. i'm sewing into all my shirt tails a little tag i made that says "be who you were born to be." so when i get dressed in the morning i have the reminder. don't be the person you have allowed yourself to become. be who you were born to be. that is a good, decent person that tries. >> let me ask you. a lot of people will say, one of the things appears to be now you being a very outspoken critic of liberals in particular. let me get to this. >> i knew you were going here. people don't like me -- >> you compare liberals to the if a sh fascists and nazis -- >> progressives, not liberals. >> since the tucson shooting
9:20 am
where people have criticized you, sarah palin, among others and they said it's exactly that tone and the political vitriol that's fuelling the fires? >> that's so crazy. i'm sorry to interrupt. but really we have so much work to do to repair the mental health system in america. a system that would send jared loughner home from college and say, don't come back. imagine if he had diabetes and was collapsing all over campus. what doctor would say, go home and never come back? >> they don't want the distraction. >> you look at the seven things. the 9/12 project. nine values and principles. look at those and say, don't read the book. if you're just going to read it, don't buy it. if your going to activate the words in it. if you want to change yourself. forget changing the country in washington because it's not going to happen. that's one thing i have learned. it's not going to happen.
9:21 am
we must change ourselves. our spending in our own lives is just as out of control as in washington. who are we to say, fix that? >> how do you respond to the accusations of people making to the criticism that they have been saying in the past week since the shooting that you may be somewhat to blame with the political discourse in the country? >> you go back to jefferson and adams. in 1800 the election of 1800 and listen to what they said about each other. jefferson was -- adams said if jefferson was elected your children were going to be raped and your villages would be burned. come on. come on. we had this kind of passion before. i'm not telling you that anyone's coming over to rape your children or burn your town down. >> well, we'll have to leave it there. clearly you will turn to the book for more answers. the book is called "seven wonders that will change your

this morning on "today's woman" how to wear long hair at any age. some women believe if you are over 40 long hair adds years to the face. but louis licari says all you need is the right cut to look great. good morning. >> good morning. >> where did the notion about once you turn 40 you have to chop the hair because it doesn't look good anymore? where did that come from? >> i think it's from the '60s when people wore their hair long and straight. it's not so much how long your hair is but the shape of the hair and how it goes with your face. >> and having a good style. >> great style so it lifts your face and makes you look young and pretty. >> is there any hair type or person -- shape face that
9:44 am
shouldn't have long hair? >> i think that a big mistake people make is if they have a full face they think they can cover it with long straight hair. doesn't work. it needs layers. you have to be careful as you become older. your hair does become -- the condition isn't as pretty. >> becomes more brittle or you get more gray. >> more gray. so it changes texture. you don't want it too light or too dark. all that's too aging. >> we have a good example. the celebrities are all wearing their hair long. everyone from sandra bullock to now on the cover of allure magazine jennifer aniston with the gorgeous hair she has. she's a person who consistently -- now she has the new bangs. looks great on her. she's consistently kept her hair longer. >> beautiful. the girls that can wear their hair really longer are genetically gifted. >> she is. we can't all be her.
9:45 am
>> for the mere mortals, there are tricks that we can -- tips, i should say, to make our hair look more pretty. >> let's talk about tobi. she has a round face. we look at the before picture with straight, long red hair. what was the problem here? >> she's a perfect example. her face is round so she did the cover. in fact, she used her hair not only to cover her face but she explained it as her protective blanket. she hid behind her hair. >> now she's gorgeous. >> look at her today. number one, this is dana actually. she layered her hair around her face. so the hair is long but shaped. it shows off her face shape, her cheekbones. her face is thinner. we see it, number one. it opens it up.

9:47 am
>> yeah. >> she has made her face look more narrow. now. >> >> you look amazing. >> she has this layered hair cut that's completely tousled and i changed the highlights which were actually making her hair drab. i made her this slightly warmer color. >> made her fab. >> it belongs to her, not me. >> gorgeous. just vibrant hair. great texture, too. very nice. okay. let's take a look at the last model, miriam. she has long, wavy, gray hair. >> okay. she grew her hair, and grew it and grew her hair some more. >> and the color she didn't change either. >> she never changed the color. >> 20 years younger. >> 20 years younger at least. >> absolutely. >> we gave her a great chic bob, dana did. of course i covered the gray.
