6:04 am
i mean, i don't ever think he would hurt him, when is a really good thing. that's keeping my hopes up, too, that my son will come home safe. >> reporter: tabitha cardinas is eight months pregnant with the suspect's baby. the investigators will search a different part of the canal looking for any sign of the suspect and 4-year-old giuliani. in the meantime drivers are asked to keep an eye out for the silver toyota corolla with a license plate of6hbw445. if you see that car or know anything about this case, you are asked to call 911 immediately. live in san jose this morning, marla tellez, "today in the bay." it is 6:04 right now. a rash of armed robberies in one of the safest communities in the peninsula has police and residents alarmed.

good morning, everybody. welcome back. it is 6:14. a live look at the south bay this morning. speaking of the south bay, a lot of these companies are located there throughout the bay area. for the fortune magazine's top 500 companies, we have google and cisco located here. the battle of the health reform law is heating up in washington. democrats vow to stop any legislation that would repeal it. house republicans followed through on their election promise to vote to repeal the law. the final vote was evenly divided bipartisan lines, but the house vote was largely symbolic. democrats still hold control of the senate and won't reveal the health act. >> this is not symbolic, this is why we were sent here. and we will not stop until we repeal. >> it isn't symbolic to the 149
6:16 am
million americans with health conditions who now are locked out or priced out of the market. >> the republican leaders are now taking a different approach. instead of everyone buying health insurance they are looking at having the sickest americans buy insurance as a group. apple is the apple of wall street this morning, meaning fewer investors are kind of gaga over google. we'll go to scott mcgrew. does this mean google is falling out of favor? >> reporter: well, it has a little bit, hasn't it? it certainly fell out of the news cycle. apple reporting record profits and facebook which doesn't say much about its finances has made a lot of news lately. what about google? the mountain view company reports profits this afternoon. the experts such as they are expect a revenue jump of 22%. now, that would get you salesman of the year in most companies, but compared to apple's increase of 70% all of a sudden that doesn't sound like so much. the other thing to watch for this afternoon, google's costs. it has been hiring like mad
6:17 am
lately. that takes a chunk out of the bottom line. just for fun, a look at the google home page this morning with a nod to the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of john kennedy. the letters of google made up a famous coat from the president. the computer history museum recently renovated and expanded. bob redell is here with the old new stuff or the old new stuff. one of the two. >> reporter: it is called revolution, the first 2,000 years computing at the history museum. they have basically more than doubled their exhibition space. i'm looking at that tall stack of computers behind you. i have heard of google, what started this all? >> this is one of the google server racks from 1999. it is a pc hardware -- if you are a pc geek, you may recognize the components as something you could buy in the shop back in
6:18 am
the day, but the software makes it. >> reporter: scott, i want to show you something. you are familiar with one of these, they are only a few pounds with quite a bit of processing power. and maybe you remember this -- this is from 1981. 24 pounds. this is one of the first laptop computers. this is 1,000 times -- remember that? you remember this ibm pc. they have a ton of old pcs on display. that's one thing that strikes me most. you come to the museum to see things pre-data. here these are things we remember growing up. >> it is temporary technology. it is a real challenge to collect these things now, things we don't necessarily consider to be historic items, but the general public may still have them in air their attic. we have to preserve them for
6:19 am
future generations. >> reporter: i know we talked earlier about pong. this is the original pong, is that correct? >> this is the 1972 pong prototype given to us for this exhibition by the guy who designed pong. this was put out for people to use in sunnyvale. people couldn't figure out what it was. >> reporter: come over here, scott. take a look at this prototype. this was on display. it was very confusing at the time you are saying. >> yes, people couldn't make sense of it at the time. they started to play with it. at the end of the night, a lot of people played with the exit data. there was a line out of door, people wanted to play for days. they got a call saying it was broken. too many people wanted to play it. >> reporter: there you go. computer history in two minutes. the first 2,000 years of computer history on display here at the museum. they have over 1,100 artifacts. this is just a sampling.
6:20 am
>> i know when we walk in there it is fun to see the stuff. as bob mentioned, did he say i remember this? it is fun to see the stuff you thought was state of the art back in 1985. >> i don't know what you are talking about. >> right. >> thank you. it is really interesting. well, how about this one? star wars' george lucas thinks the world will end next year. the actor got the rumor mill turning when he told the newspapers that he met with lucas. and they claimed lucas spent 25 minutes talking about the myan prophesy that the world will end in december of 2012. a representative for lucas says he's not serious when he tries to talk about that. in fact n a sarcastic release, she says, quote, lucas is an adamant believer that the sun revolves around the earth. these are subjects he discusses
6:21 am
at length. >> these are things we talk about with mike all the time. especially the thing about being flat. you go out there too far -- >> you go right off the edge, exactly. we'll keep you close to home. livermore you don't have to go far for the slowing. you see it right out of the altamonte pass with speeds near 50 miles per hour. this is pretty typical for us. it is slowing right there as you get towards the 580/680 interchange. smooth down the cartinas bridge. through berkeley north of the cartinas bridge you are seeing gusty winds. closer to home, look at the toll plaza. a few folks are lining up now coming off the 880 overcrossing. that's a new line forming in a couple of minutes. the metering lights will turn on in a minute. the metering lights keep things moving smoothly. over the next half hour we'll see this less likely because of
6:22 am
the backup at the toll plaza. we'll see will the a lot of sun out there, too. >> yes, all because of the wind shaking that camera a bit. we have offshore winds rights now down-sloping winds warming us up pushing from land to sea. that's the case for today. we have stubborn high pressure not going anywhere for the next six or seven days. we are talking be about temperatures almost 15 degrees above average as you head into tomorrow. probably 10 degrees above average for today. temperaturewise we are looking at 67 degrees in fairfield. 64 for livermore. 61 in oakland. and the temperatures are going to hold strong warming up by tomorrow. 69 degrees is your forecasted high. lows in the 40s. it is a mild start this morning. and we'll see a lot of sunshine this afternoon. a great way to kickoff the weekend on friday with a 69-degree temperature. now, as you know, we are constructing a new set next door.
6:23 am
look at that! who is that? is it brent cannon? is it laura garcia-cannon? no, it is the product of the two, the triplets. they came in and had a great time on our new set. we want to show you all of the pictures. just log on to facebook and search for nbc "today in the bay." you can find our page. i have to tell you, those are three of the cutest kids i have seen in my life. >> it was just a little mind the scenes thing getting the new studio ready. the kids took over. >> they didn't have anybody to watch them. so they had to come. >> i was just hoping they didn't wreck it. >> they didn't, so that's good. your commute around the bay area is not as bad as it once was. find out who says so in a live report. plus, the super bowl is always a tough ticket to get. next, find out how to spend $200 in b a theam gige.ll n t et toin bheam g

6:27 am
not count on the record. president obama may be going to the super bowl. he's a bears fan. if the bears go he is, too. no sitting president has attended the super bowl. you can bet he won't be watching it on the big screen if he goes. he'll be inside in the luxury box, i'll assume. >> if you come to our house, we'll provide chips. 6:27 right now. the gang from "grease" is stopping by our studio later this morning. congresswoman gabrielle giffords could be leaving the hospital as early as tomorrow. we'll have thees her health coming up. rocket scientists!

6:32 am
keep that in mind and bring your sunglasses. back to you guys. in a new report out this morning concerning your commute, that may surprise you that the bay area commute is getting easier. christie smith is live with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. i guess if you have been ranked so bad for so long this is an improvement. the bay area traffic is no longer in the top five worst of the worst in the entire country. it is now slipping to number six, but the reasons behind this are sort of a mixed bag. and that according to the texas transportation institute which has studied this sort of thing for nearly 30 years. first the good news. one theory on the reduced congestion is it is all tied to the traffic improvement projects going on in the bay area like new meter lights, carpool lanes and highway extensions. for instance, new carpool lanes on interstate 80 in solano county or the opening of the highway 4 bypass in contra costa county all reducing the bottlenecks. that's one theory. the other theory is perhaps it
6:33 am
is tied to the slumping economy. maybe there are just fewer people out there driving to work. now, a spokesperson for the metropolitan transportation commission here locally thinks it is just a little bit of both. and researchers think we could enjoy it just while we can, we should, because as soon as california's economy comes back so will the traffic. but for the first time in 28 years the bay area is not in the top five worst of the worst. that's the latest from here. reporting live in livermore, christie smith, "today in the bay." governor jerry brown is asking city leaders to hear him out on his budget plans before dismissing or in some cases even fighting what he has to say. as we told you yesterday, cities all across the state are calling emergency meetings trying to keep the state from shutting down local redevelopment agencies. some cities are rushing to try to move that redevelopment money into funds that are shielded from state rates. brown wants to shift $5 million
