good morning. breaking news, a deadly explosion inside the busiest airport in moscow, at least 31 people are dead, 130 others injured. there are reports the blast may have been carried out by a suicide bomber, we're live with the latest details. the woman accused of kidnapping a baby and raisising her for the past 23 years faces a judge today. this morning the father who thought he had lost his daughter forever is here for an ex-clufs live interview. and the godfather of fitness, jack lalane, the man who inspired generations of americans to get in shape has died at the age of 96. we'll look back at his remarkable life today, monday, january 24th, 2011.

welcome "today" on a monday morning. it's 7:00 a.m. on the west coast. i'm matt lauer. >> i'm ann curry. 31 people killed in what could be a terror attack at the busiest and biggest airport in russia. >> the blast happened earlier near the baggage claim area, domodedovo airport in moscow. nbc's stephanie gosk is in london. what is the latest you can tell us? >> reporter: russian news agencies believe this was a suicide attack. there are mixed reports on the number of dead, going up quickly. the latest number is 31 with dozens more injured.

the scene described by the agencies is one of pandemonium with smoke coming out of the doors, and shrapnel found on the ground. they believe right now that this suicide bomb, they say also this is an area of moscow that suffered from terrorist attacks in the past. last march there was an attack in the metro that killed close to 40 people and there's a low level islamic insurgency in the caucuses region in russia and terrorists from the region have gone to moscow and attacked them before. matt? >> stephanie gosk in london, thank you very much. nbc terrorism analyst roger cresse joins us. the islamic insurgency from the northern caw caucases region.

>> the last march is a good example of that. if it was a suicide bomber it demonstrated despite all the russian success in trying to clamp down on the insurgency dealing with the chechens, there are still vulnerabilities the terrorists can go after in terms of mass transportation. a baggage claim area with international arrivals, think of the symbolism there, going after not just russians, international target sets so that's pretty chilling. >> this particular airport the busiest but also considered to be the most updated airport and yet there have been security problems here in the past, roger, terrorists able to buy tickets from inside personnel 2004, get on planes and blow the planes up. >> that's right, potentially two problems here, matt, the insider assistance, somebody helping whoever was behind this attack to get them in, and then to ultimately detonate the device. second possibility is as we know in baggage game in any

international airport or domestic airport it's easy to go in there. you don't go through a typical security screening procedure. if they had additional security in place in this airport where someone was helping from the inside they could bypass it and see this type of attack and create a large body count unfortunately. >> roger cresse, thank you very much. we appreciate it. we'll continue to follow the story and bring you the latest developments as we get them. for now it's 7:04 pacific time. here's ann. dangerous cold is gripping much of the cold. peter alexander is in central park this morning. i'm sure you're freezing out there. good morning. >> reporter: my toes are burning, you can count the temperatures on my fingers, if you can feel them, 9 degrees in central park, relatively balmy compared to the northeast. the adirondacks, actual

temperature 36 degrees below zero. welcome to the great american ice box. these are not your fair weather fans. in chicago where the bears and packers faced off and wind chills dipped into the single digits, tail gaepters tried to ignore the thermostat. >> i have on four layers. it's getting colder by the second, i swear. >> reporter: in pittsburgh, same story, different city. the fiery jets and steelers showdown left little heat for those in the stands. it's not just cold. it's painful and it will get worse today with more than half the country suffering through biting winds and below average temperatures. the windchills are going to be so low that if you have exposed flesh could you get frostbite in as little as ten minutes. >> reporter: frozen roads have made driving dangerous and an icy highway caused this trokor trailer crash saturday in ontario, canada. amazingly, no one was hurt. in ohio where the mercury dropped to 11 degrees below zero

sunday, a beach volleyball event where players lost their shirts and arguably their minds. in minneapolis, this boy scout troop braved the cold overnight in snow caves, all for a coveted patch. >> stay dry, stay warm, stay hydrated. >> reporter: all this cold on top of all that snow. five storms in the northeast in the last month alone with yet another one forecast this week. >> i can't take no more. i can't. no more snow. no more snow. >> reporter: and if you think you're having a bad morning consider what it would be like to be the owner of this car. we found this shot early this morning in new york city. apparently there was a water main break. you can see exactly what happened. water flooded all over this car, pouring on top of it, now locked in, could be days if not weeks before they get this thing out. we're trying our best to stay warm, we have the extra layers, the hand and toe warmers and excuse the unibrow.

>> it works for you peter. what can i say? thanks so much this morning. >> without the help of a pickaxe, maria larosa, how long will it take people to get in the car town? >> good news is today is the peak of the extreme cold. a couple of days before we thaw out. current temperatures 4 below in albany. 10 below in plattsburgh. 10 below in the northeast, areas 20-25 below zero range. we are watching to the south what's going to be our next storm some. next system bringing rain to the central gulf, later tonight and tomorrow it will bring snow to the tennessee valley. we have a couple scenarios as we always do. one track more likely the major cities will see some snow accumulation changing over to rain. next scenario, possible major cities with snow mixing with sleet. we'll continue to keep tabs on this bun. ann, matt? >> maria, thank you very much.

we'll get the rest of your forecast in a little while. first to washington, president obama is hoping for a warmer reception when he delivers his state of the union address tomorrow night. nbc's white house correspondent savannah guthrie has a preview of the speech. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the president has seen a big bump in approval ratings and wants to keep that momentum going but republicans are already drawing the battle lines. >> i just want to give you a preview of what i'm going to be saying. >> reporter: president obama gave campaign supporters a sneak peek online. >> my number one focus is going to be making sure that we are competitive, that we are growing and we are creating jobs, not just now, but well into the future. >> reporter: a theme that may sound familiar from last year's speech. >> jobs must be our number one focus in 2010. >> reporter: one year later with unemployment still stubbornly high and the democrats rebuke in

the midterm, the president is expected to plot a more centrist course. aides say the speech will emphasize working with republicans where possible, the need for job creation especially by increasing exports and need for tough decisions on spending to reduce the deficit, but the president will also call for so-called investments in key areas like education and infrastructu infrastructure, a word that set off alarm bells for republicans. >> we want to cut and grow because when we hear "invest" from anyone in washington, to me that means more spending. >> with all due respect to our democratic friends, any time they want to spend they call it investment. >> reporter: they picked paul ryan to give their rebuttal and michele bachmann for the tea party. dozens of republicans and democrats will break tradition and sit together as opposed to across the aisle. >> the fact is it's a good thing to do.

giffords, her road to recovery hit a setback. janet shamblian is there this morning. >> reporter: they'll keeper longer than planned. it was hoped she could be moved to rehappen within the next few days but due to the side effect of this type of brain injury she's not ready to make that move. >> reporter: gabby giffords won't be moving to the rehab unit of the hospital as planned. >> several days ago in tucson there was a flute collection the docs put a drain into, around her brain and that drain is still in place. with that drain in place you can't leave the icu. >> reporter: despite the complication, giffords is already in therapy. her husband, astronaut mark kelly, tweeting sunday, "gabrielle starts her second day of rehab in 2 minutes at memorial hermann. no weekends off here." >> we try to wean the patient off of the drain by draining

less frequently and trying to assess whether or not the brain is capable itself of reabsorbing the fluid. >> reporter: as treatment continues in texas in felix jared loughner, the man accused of shooting giffords and killing six others will make his first appearance in federal court. the 22-year-old facing charges of atempting to assassinate the congresswoman and the attempted murder of two of her staff members. further charges are expected and he could ultimately face the death penalty if convicted. nbc newspapers obtained these photos of loughner taken by a friend at a party given by bryce tierney seen here in the yellow shirt. tierney got a call from loughner in the hours before the shooting who later said loughner sounded suicidal. a different look than his disturbing mug shot. in these photos taken two years ago he has a full head of hair and is surrounded by friends. loughner is expected to enter a

plea this afternoon. here in houston gabrielle giffords continues her fight. >> thank you for your report, janet. let's get a check of the other headlines making news this morning. natalee is at the news desk from w that. >> good morning, matt, ann and everyone. police are investigating a shoot-out at a washington state walmart that left a young woman and the gunman dead on sunday. two sheriffs deputies were wounded in the cross-fire. the gunman opened fire after several deputies aproechd to speak with him. four detroit police officers are recovering after a gunman burst into their precinct station and opened fire. none of the officers' wounds is considered life-threatening. the gunman was killed when police returned fire. lakeside community near cleveland, ohio, was evacuated after a series of fires apparently caused by a natural gas line. the red cross set up shelters for residents of fair port who are bore on a day where temperatures hit 7 degrees. palestinian negotiators

apparently allowed israel to keep its claim on parts of east jerusalem in past talks. the white house is verifying the materials, which senior palestinian negotiators are dismissing. a water main break turned part of the capital beltway outside washington, d.c., into an icy river this morning. drivers were barred from the roadway after a 54 inch pipe burst, backing up traffic for miles. american technology may have helped china build its new stealth fighter jet. military officials say parts from an american stealth plane shot down over serbia in 1999 were found by local farmers and sold to chinese agents. the parts were apparently taken to china and studied by engineers building the chengdu j-20 jet. the recession may have a lasting impact on restaurant profits and american waistlines. restaurants are not rebounding from hard times the way they usually do. cash-strapped americans learned to cook more meals at home and found it helped them save money

and lose weight. good for us i guess. a spectacular crash meantime in canada, where a driver was nearly killed. this truck smashed through a divider into oncoming traffic. the wreckage hurdled past another driver who installed a dash cam after previous accidents. police charged the trucker with hazardous driving. thank goodness for that driver who managed to escape there. and the green bay packers will face off against the pittsburgh steelers in super bowl xlv, despite a second half comeback by the jets, the steelers managed to topple new york 24-19, and the packers beat the bears, the chicago bears, 21-14, so the showdown will be at cowboy's stadium in texas. a little too little too late for the jets unfortunately for a lot of new york fans feeling the pain but the steelers played a hard fought game. matt and ann? they played well. >> absolutely. the jets had a nice season. pittsburgh played great.

the super bowl boils down to a couple of storied fran chilzs, between the green bay packers and pittsburgh steelers. >> you're feeling sad about the jets? >> yeah. >> when was the last time they got this close? >> they were in the afc championship last year, in the game last year and lost to indianapolis. this is two years in a row they got this close to the super bowl and came up short. they didn't play a good first half. they only played the second half. >> next year. it's going to happen. al is off, maria larosa of the weather channel is filling in. >> good morning, cold in the west. the west is seeing a little bit of warmth. the pacific northwest seeing rain. we have a weaker system coming onshore bringing showers from seattle down to portland and touching northern california. meanwhile southern california feeling nice today, up to 75 degrees, plenty of sunshine, santa ana winds are easing up. across the central gulf coast we have our storm shaping up, bringing showers and thunderstorms and locally heavy rain to eastern texas and to

ma. >> reporter: what a difference a new judge and prosecutor can make, right? this time there's no yelling or thee th theatrics or name calling. prosecutors want to lengthen her 26-year sentence to life. the italian papers still call her angel face but amanda knox's family says she couldn't care less about that. she and her len boyfriend look older, strained, since they were convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering her roommate in 2007. >> it's starting to weigh in on her. it's been so long, cold and gray. >> reporter: for the first time in these years amanda has good tron smile. her appeal is going her way. the judge finally allowed independent experts to review

the case. the defense can call new witnesses, a key prosecution witness with dealing heroin and a decision that could change everything, experts will retest the highly contested dna evidence, a miniscule trace from the victim but not blood, found on this knife from rafaeli's kitchen prosecutors called the murder weapon. amanda's dna was on the handle but her defense says she cooked meals in the apartment. and a tiny trace on meredith's bra clasp but nowhere else. his experts don't think it's his dna at all. >> no match, no match. i did a deep examination of the results obtained by the police and i'm sure there are two exclusions. sure exclusions. >> reporter: such a difficult, emotional case, it's drawn supporters for amanda like this retired british doctor.

>> there's no evidence. there's not the slightest bit of evidence. >> reporter: in her prison in these quiet ubrian hills, amanda occupies herself study, listening to music and playing ping-pong, very guardedly hopeful. >> we have always said that if these bits of evidence are re-examined that things will -- that the truth will be found out. it's nice to have that actually happen. >> reporter: so experts have 90 days to test and analyze the its evidence. they will submit a report and then it could be months before amanda finds out if her conviction stands or she is set free. ann? >> michelle, thank you so much. just ahead the woman who raised that child stolen from a new york hospital 23 years ago now facing kidnapping charges. we'll get the latest and talk exclusively to her father but first, this is "today" on nbc. one minute you feel fine.

good morning to you. it is 7:26 right now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. we'll look the forecast with christina now. it is gorgeous all across the bay area. this morning not quite as nice as this weekend in the east bay and north bay with dense fog. that will be the case until 11:00 a.m., but we'll see highs today in the 60s. we are talking about 67 degrees in san jose. by lunchtime you're already peeling off a layer. 62 degrees in san jose. and 63 in gilroy. so it will be a gorgeous day. the places that pick up the most fog will likely see the coolest

father who was just reunited with his daughter who was stolen from a new york hospital as a baby 23 years ago. >> and also ahead, if you're a parent of a daughter -- we both are -- we all know that girls like to play, a lot of them, with playing princess and wearing pink. but is it possible that sends a message to young girls that may limit their future? that's according to one future. we'll talk about that coming up. >> we are going to look back at the remarkable life of fitness guru jack lalanne who died sunday at the age of 96. we begin with the latest on the decades-old kidnapping case that resulted in a remarkable reunion between a woman and her real parents. we'll talk to her father in a moment, but first tom yamas from here in new york has the latest on the case. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. ann pettway will appear before a federal judge this morning in new york city. over the weekend the fbi and the nypd were looking for her.

she turned herself in. authorities believe she kidnapped carlina white 23 years ago from a new york hospital. the question is not only how but why. this exclusive video shows ann pettway in custody leaving the fbi's office in bridgeport, connecticut. federal authorities say pettway kidnapped carlina white from harlem hospital in 1987 when white was just an infant. on saturday, police say pettway was spotted trying to sell items at this bridgeport pawnshop. >> she was recognized by a clerk. he made a call to us and the detectives responded to the location. >> reporter: pettway, who is 44, turned herself in on sunday. she's wanted for breaking probation in north carolina. pettway disappeared after news broke that the woman she called her daughter, nejdra nance, was really carlina white. >> the whole family believed that ann was nejdra's mother. there was never no questions

about it. >> reporter: relatives say they remember seeing pettway pregnant but no one saw her give birth to nejdra. the facts aren't known but there is a profile for baby snatchers. >> it's normally a woman who has recently lost a child who has a fantasy about being a mother and has not been able to achieve it. it may be someone who's faked a pregnancy for seven, eight, nine months and needs to produce the proof of the pregnancy. >> reporter: for more than two decades the parents had no idea what happened to their daughter. >> she thinks maybe we'll press charges. right now, i won't press charges. bring me the baby. >> reporter: dna confirmed carlina's true identity and she reunited with her biological moth around father. carlina said she long suspected

pettway wasn't her real mother because she couldn't produce a birth certificate. carlina found a picture of a missing baby that looked like her own baby. prosecutors have a strong case. >> though this has been over a 20-year cold case for the authorities we have dna evidence. we have the statements of relatives basically going back from the time the little girl disappeared from the hospital. so i don't think this is going to be hard to put together at all. >> reporter: today in court prosecutors may reveal what evidence they have against ann pettway, something they don't have is surveillance video on that day back in august of 1987 the cameras in the hospital weren't working. matt? >> all right, tom. thank you very much. carlina's father carl tyson is with us exclusively along with his sister regina. good morning. >> good morning. >> i'm trying to see the smile on your face. what have the last several days been like for you, carl? >> oh, they have been hard.

>> hard? joyous in some ways? >> joyous, yes. >> hard in what way? >> right about me -- excuse me for a minute. i'm happy that my daughter came back to me. another problem i'm having is it's hard for her to cope with us right now because she hasn't been with us for 23 years. i know she wants to reunite with us and everything. on the other hand, she had this other family a that she's been with. >> she can't just walk away from 23 years of her life to say, okay, this is my real life over here. it's got to be a difficult adjustment. >> it is. it really is. >> you must have thought -- i mean, i know you thought about your daughter every day. >> every day. >> since she went missing 23 years ago. when you stop to think about everything you missed that was taken from you, you know, the birthdays, birthday parties, friends, all of that, how do you deal with that? >> it was really hard. when christmastime comes, they

didn't give christmas toys to her. on her birthday, no one would give a party to her. it was hard walking down the streets seeing someone having a baby. i was always wondering if that's my baby. i don't have a young lady to take to the park. it was hard. >> ann pettway, the alleged kidnapper in this case, turned herself in to police over the weekend. she'll now face federal charges. i remember looking at that tape where 23 years ago you said on television, i'm not going to press charges. i just want my baby back. the federal government will now press charges. how have your feelings toward this person changed over the years? >> right about now whatever the court system applies to her, that's all right with me. i'm not going to say much on that because i have other things in my heart. >> i know one question you would love to have a chance to ask her -- >> why? >> yeah. can you begin to speculate as to

why? >> juthat's what i would ask he why. then i would listen and ask her more questions. but why did you do this to me for 23 years? >> regina, as a family, how do you go about getting to know the relative that you didn't know for 23 years? how do you do that? >> well, colleen and i speak every day. i spoke to colleen two days ago as well as yesterday and carlina just wants everyone to know that she's not abandoning her new york city family but people that provided love to her it's hard to up and leave. but there will be a balance. what ms. pettway done, she wants justice to be served but the family that provided her with this unconditional love for 23

years did not have no idea what was going on. >> and they shouldn't be victimized. >> exactly. >> what you're telling me here is after this emotional reunion, she had to go back to her life, her former life? >> well, she's 23 years old. she's an adult with a 5-year-old. she lives in atlanta. if she were 12 we could ship her to new york city. >> right. >> but she's 23 years old with a 5-year-old daughter. she resides in atlanta, georgia. we can't make that decision that she should be here in new york city. we would like that. >> carl, there's been a piece of you that's been missing for 23 years. >> yes. >> it's back in many ways. do you feel whole or is this aspect of the fact that she's got this entirely separate life, is that gnawing at you? >> well, it is a piece i have been missing, but i feel now i have my piece, my whole puzzle.

i have all four of my kids now. only thing i want -- i know i can't do all the things i wanted to do when she was little. the day i met her i thought, i don't know what to do with her. should i feed her baby food or go to mcdonald's. she said, i don't know what to do with you either. >> i'm 23. >> what do you do with a 23-year-old? she said, maybe i want to get my hair done. but it's funny sitting there with your father. i'm 23. it was hard that day, but i enjoyed her. i can't make up for the lost time. >> sounds like it will be a slow process. >> oh, yes, it is. >> thank you very much for your time. good luck to your family. we wish you the best. it's 39 after the hour. let's get a check of the weather from maria larosa who is filling in for al.

we're hearing so far from russian officials and media reports 31 dead and 130 injured. now, that number could climb. they say this happened in the baggage claim area of the international arrivals area. i have flown through there many times it's a relatively cramped area. three or four flights there and you would have a lot of people packed pretty close together. a huge explosion. president medvedev called it an attack. one report said two suicide bombers. we don't have that confirmed but the president has canceled his trip to the economic forum. he says they will hunt down the people who did this and make sure to catch them and bring them to justice. in the meantime, they're raising security at airports, railroad stations hoping to make sure that another thing like this won't happen again. natal natalie? >> reporting there from moscow. thank you so much. frigid temperatures in the eastern half of the country are

blamed for at least two deaths, including a woman who fell in her driveway and froze. new york city is shivering through its coldest weather in years. one car was incased in ice after a water main break. temperatures plunged to 40 below in upstate new york and all of this after a month of snow storms. president obama will focus on jobs and debt reduction in his state of the union address tomorrow. in a break with tradition, many republicans and democrats will sit together during the address. a gesture of bipartisanship. a spectacular crash in canada caught on tape by a driver who was nearly killed. take a look at the truck smashed through a divider into oncoming traffic. the wreckage then hurdled past another driver who had installed a dash cam after a previous accident. police charged the trucker with hazardous driving but the driver of that car has to be so grateful he got away. it is now 8:04 right now. let's go back outside to matt and ann. that one driver has to be counting their blessings today..

back now at 8:09. this morning on "today's moms" a pink backlash. if you have a young daughter you know most little girls love anything that has to do with princesses and sparkles and the color pink. but why? like all mothers, peggy want it is world for her daughter daisy. >> you want to raise your daughter so she doesn't think she can't do anything because she's a girl. >> reporter: daisy has dreams, too. >> i want to be a librarian. i want to own a bakery because i like making pastry. >> reporter: but peggy, author of a new book called "cinderella ate my daughter" became concerned about the pink storm headed for her daughter, so she did some research.

>> we live in a time that there is an unprecedented level of marketing of these products to littler and littler and littler girls. i started digging into it and i started looking at this girl culture that was becoming more pervasive and younger that was sort of telling girls and emphasizing to them appearance. >> reporter: but pink, princess and sparkles sell. >> i'd be lying if i told you marketing to girls wasn't big business. it's a huge business. >> reporter: american girl has sold nearly $20 million since entering the scene since 1986. barbie is a $3 billion brand. dora, $11 billion and the disney princess collection earned $4 billion in 2009. >> what we aim to do is to inspire or evoke some kind of emotion or create a demand for a product or service that we hope is enjoyed by the consumer. >> reporter: has the girly girl

phenomenon crossed the line? >> there is nothing wrong with having a daughter who loves princesses, plays with dolls or loves pink. it's about broadening her life and making sure she knows she can still play with dolls and become a president, a scientist, a loving mother. >> i guess what i want for daisy is -- the sky's the limit. i want her to find her real happily ever after. >> joining us now is peggy orenstein, the author of "cinderella ate my daughte daughter: dispatches from the front line of the new girly girl culture." she's joined by psychotherapist and relationship expert stacy kaiser. good morning to you both. what, from all of your research, t is the most alarming thing about the girl culture? >> i guess that it's getting younger and for girls younger and younger down into 2, 3, 4 years old we are talking about

emphasizing beauty and play sexiness. so when we were little you probably got your first bonnie belle lipsmackers at, what, 12 years old? now girls have a full array at 4. is that okay? maybe. but when you're talking about lip smackers at 4, america's top model at 9 and keeping up with the kardashians at 10. you know, it starts to be a lot of pressure to be sexy. i don't think you want your 4-year-old thinking about being sexy on any level. >> is there evidence or reason to believe that this kind of exposure to the princess pink factor actually encourages or causes girls to sexualize earlier or be more sexualized? you're making a big leap here. is there evidence for it? >> this is new, so there isn't a lot of evidence or backup. here's what i can tell you.

good parents make good kids and parents are our greatest role models. it's not just what you say about barbie or princess pink, iet tes way you live your life. if you are a good parent and diligent and your kids aren't going to be sexualized too early and they will grow up to be independent. >> in terms of the sexualization issue we also have what can i be issue which is what you talk about in the book. amid the plethora of pink there is a dirth of capes. there are some girl superheroes, more than there was once, but in what way can this limit a girl? >> i connect the dots between the obsession with the appearance which narrows and limits our daughters. if you are looking at the princesses, i think about the flesh and blood princesses as well. so you think about little princesses and then, say, i don't know, miley, lindsay,

selena. when you look at them when they start their careers they all wear the true love waits rings promising to be chaste. in the early interviews they say, we like to choose clothes moms like. we are in no hurry to get older. then wham, three months later they are dancing on poles. you can't make wholesomeness into a marketing gimmick. >> what do mothers and fathers need to do? >> we need to lock our daughters in a tower. >> you're obviously being funny. >> as parents what we need to do is know what our values are and work on them with kids. we need to be good role models and talk to your kids. say, you don't want to be like miley. that princess is pretty but you don't take apples from strangers. have the conversations and so

this morning on "today's beauty," finding confidence and beauty at 50 and beyond. if you are worried about hit ago big birthday milestone, don't worry. we have susan st. james ebersol, wife, mom, emmy-winning actress and humanitarian here along with her friend and "today" beauty contributor bobbi brown. how cool is this? this is great. first of all, let's get this out on the table. -- >> they have more magazine which i love but it's about 40 and two months. they need one called "even more." >> "even even more". >> you say we need to reshape some of our dialogue about this issue. >> bobbi and i hang out and talk. she says, what are you going to do? this is what my age group talks about a lot. actually much younger.

are you going to do surgery, botox, restalin or fillers? i'm like, when i was 17, 18, 20 when i started in film, we were the generation. i'm the first crash of baby boom that said, we're not wearing false eyelashes. we'll keep our names. >> you were a hippy. >> i was a hippy, too. so why wouldn't i translate that to the end of my beauty years. >> it's tough. >> it is tough. >> you're in the middle. >> yes. my mother is 95. >> we have a photograph of your mother and your sister, i think, in addition in this picture. >> look at that. her wrinkles are, like, gorgeous. let's get back to why it's tough. so many women hang onto our sense of self. the world constantly puts us in a box to be pretty, sexy. it is tough. >> may i ask, have you actually done -- >> i have never done surgery.

i did botox once which i kind of liked for my forehead so it didn't look like i was frowning. but you have to do it all the time. then i hate my lips, you know. but i told bobbi, i think the trick is -- >> you can't do your lips. you can't. >> if we were born with thin lips, wear a good lipstick. wear a nude lipstick. it's so important for me because susan is 10 years older. it's important for me to have a role model. how cool is she? i go to her party and she's wearing jeans with holes and a black sweater and she's comfortable. to me, that's a beautiful woman. >> how do you do it? i'm on bobbi's side on this. you look fantastic. >> being on the thin side is good. i wasn't. that was great for my face, but being on the thin side you look better in clothes. so i cut back. i do a lot of yoga. and a little bit of weights because of the bones. i stopped taking all the bone

stuff, too. i just have to believe that my mom has never done anything and she's feeling fabulous. you know, i'd like to do that but you have to -- you know, jane fonda is a friend and she said she got tired of looking tired and wanted to do stuff. god bless her, she works in film all the time. i don't. i'm not working. if you're working there is more pressure. >> but the point here is that everything you just said was about health. it was about taking care of yourself, being healthy, yoga, breathing, being relaxed. >> it's taking care of what's on in inside so you're beautiful on the outside. >> after a certain age i tell this to women all the time. stop worrying about what you don't like about your face. fix what you don't like about your body. it's not too late to get muscles, get lean and healthy. it's hard because so many women my age and younger look at the actresses and a lot of actresses have started to wipe away their faces and a lot of amazing actresses are not. annette bening, amazing.

>> you say wipe away with surgery? >> filling in and -- >> so for us there is no good role model to look at a woman. we are supposed to have lines on our face. >> it's a struggle. i have gray hair come in and i'm struggling -- >> you can color your hair. my hair is white. i have been coloring my hair since 25. i don't understand who invented this new tv system. i'm sorry. >> hd. >> we can't change that. >> it was not a woman. >> we can't change that. >> okay. let's talk about what's on the outside. we talked about the inside. but on the outside, because that's your job. >> it is. >> you focus on helping us look better. >> you don't want to look tired. you want to plump up your skin. that's important. >> you plump it up with a moisturizer. >> in the mountains i asked bobbi because it's so dry and this balm -- >> no, no. we don't do commercials here.

>> it's about strong, thick -- >> you need something thick. >> you want something a little bit gooey to plump up the skin. a cream blush instead of powder. and you need to smile. there are no wrinkles on cheeks. >> what's nice about the cream is it's not as drying. >> a little life so you don't look like they put you in the funeral home. >> your eyes are just -- >> black eyeliner, mascara makes your eyes pop. >> filling in the brows. as we age you lose definition. so define your eyes. you want to plump up your skin, define your eyes, pop your cheeks for color. >> and then -- >> with makeup i find with my skin, as moist as i can make it, too much makeup sinks in. >> tinted moisturizer is great for women of a certain age. >> it's not as thick as foundation. it has color to it. >> it sinks in a little, too.

we're back at 8:44. this morning on "today's kitchen," back to basics. we are warming up with braised beef. it's not expensive and it's filled with flavor. one pot feed it is family. lydia is here with secrets to  making a hearty winter meal. good morning. nice to see you. >> good morning, matt. >> this is not a meal for a 90-degree day, but super bowl sunday. >> this is it. you can feed a group of 20 nice and easy and it's not many ingredien ingredients. lots of onions, some bacon. you make the pistara. it means to beat in italian. this is, in this case, onions and bacon, panchet ta.

here we have a beautiful piece of flat iron. >> what's the cut called? >> flat iron. it's shoulder. usually you get the top round -- >> don't show me that. that's fine. >> just in case. i don't want you to get misdirected here. >> okay. so this is a flat iron cut of beef. >> you flour it, salt it, put it in the pan like this and work right in the pan. >> actually this is cooking two separate ways. it's braising first and boiling second. >> braising is all about that. it's really the different part. here we are forming some caramelization. getting it all in layers of flavor. once we have that caramelized, let me lower it a little like this. then you begin the braising. in this case, i put some thyme

and beer and stock. >> now, beer, that's obviously what gets a lot of people's attention in this. so any particular kind of beer work better for this dish than others? >> when you braise, a light beer is better. >> not ale. >> not ale. a light beer because you want the beer flavor. you want the alcohol sort of to cook the meat, but you don't want a lot of the nuttiness. if you use a heavy beer it becomes bitter at the end. >> and overpowers the beef a little bit. >> exactly. this you let simmer. put some stock because this will cook for about three hours. >> this is beef stock? >> no, chicken. chicken, beef, do whatever you like. you put it right on like this. >> did you say three hours? >> three hours. it cooks slowly, slowly. that's what good braising is about. you see what happens, matt,

first of all you get the meat. okay? now cooking is came industhemis >> right. >> so the juices of the meat come out into the liquid. then slowly once that happens it all goes back into the meat. specifically when you braise if you let it rest, so this is a great dish to do a day before. >> we would cover this now for several hours. >> absolutely. in a little bit, this is kind of a chutney. cooked apples. >> but with horseradish. this is a bitter root vegetable. what are the tips for using that? it has a powerful taste. >> it's like wasabi. it's in the family. like turnips and all of that. it's great. >> less is more? >> no, no. you want lots of this. look at this. you know you usually buy it for cocktail sauce and vinegar. you can grate it like this. taste it. >> that's got some kick to it. >> yeah.

but this is really -- if you have -- it clears your sinuses and everything. >> you're mixing it with apple. you cook it down? >> cook the apple down with just a little bit of water, just a little bit of salt. i will put -- just to bind it, just a touch of cream. and, you know, if you don't want to, you don't have to. it goes great together. >> let's pretend you have done that already. i will meet you around the back. you like potatoes and swiss chard with the braised beef. >> i grew up on it. i love it. and it's available year round. nutritionally very sound. you put it in the pan. potatoes, water -- peel the potatoes. halfway cook them, throw in the swiss chard, drain it, garlic and oil and you've got it. this is what i'm saying about this cut of meat. it has the cartilage there. do you want me to serve you a little bit?

>> i will take a bite with a fork. >> get the potatoes in this. you like it? >> first of all, it's incredibly tender. >> yeah. the cartilage in there, it's finger sticking good. if you have a family maeal like that. >> you can serve it with great crunchy bread, more beer on the side. this is like the meal the crew loves in the morning. braised doughnuts and beer. we have that a lot. >> i was looking in the back there. this is lunch for them. >> they will come in here in a second. that won't be touched. this will be gone. lydia, good to see you. thank you so much. >> enjoy your super bowl sunday. >> i will. >> are you going to make this? >> no. i'm stealing yours. up next, the new way to make minivans cool. but first this is "today" on nbc.

chills. welcome to the great american ice box. these are not your fair weather fans. in chicago where the bears and packers faced off and wind chills were in the single digits, tailgaters tried to ignore the thermostat. >> i have four layers on, and it's getting colder and colder by the second, i swear. >> reporter: in pittsburgh, same story, different city. the fiery jets and steelers showdown left little heat for those in the stands. it's not just cold. it's painful and it will get worse today with more than half the country suffering through biting winds and below average temperatures. the wind chills will be so low that if you have exposed flesh you could get frostbite in as little as ten minutes. frozen roads made driving dangerous and an icy highway caused this tractor-trailer crash saturday in ontario, canada. amazingly, no one was hurt. in ohio where the mercury dropped to a record-breaking 11

degrees below zero sunday, a beach volleyball event where players lost their shirts and arguably their minds. in minneapolis, this boy scout troop braved the cold overnight in snow caves, all for a coveted patch. >> stay dry, stay warm, stay hydrated. >> reporter: all this cold on top of all that snow. five storms in the northeast in the last month alone with yet another one forecast this week. >> i can't take no more. i can't. no more snow. no more snow. >> reporter: i know you have seen this before, but you think you're having a bad morning? imagine being the owner of this car here in new york city. there was a believed water main break. you can see exactly what happened overnight. the thing is being referred to as the icicle audi model, the ice car that belongs to tamron hall. we hope to have it out by april, tamron. we're all bundled up today. i'm just afraid the squirrels are looking at me funny.

beyond that we're fine. >> peter alexander in central park, thank you very much. a developing story as the casualty toll is mounting after an apparent suicide bombing at moscow's busy a's airports. more than 30 people have been killed and at least 130 are wounded. the explosion took place below 5:00 in the evening in the arrival hall. police are investigating a deadly shootout at a washington state walmart that left a young woman and the gunman dead on sunday. two sheriff's deputies were wounded in the cross fire. witnesses say the gunman opened fire after several deputies approached to speak with him. five americans are back on dry land today after their boat disappeared in the central philippines. the 38-foot catamaran hit stormy seas and was reported missing when it failed to reach its destination on time. a lakeside community near cleveland, ohio, was evacuated this morning after a series of fires apparently caused by a

natural gas line. the red cross set up shelters for residents of fairport harbor on a day when temperatures hit 7 degrees. the u.s. postal service says it will close as many as 2,000 post offices beginning in march. the postal service reported a record $8.5 billion in losses last year. the average price of a regular gallon of gas has gone up 8 cents in the past month to $3.11 a gallon according to aaa. that's up 40 cents from a year ago. fitness and fitness and nutrition pioneer jack lalanne died at his home in california. he urged people to get off their couches and get moving. his workouts show three decades. jack lalanne was 96 years old. and no strings attached took the top spot at the box office this weekend. get warm. let's get a check of the weather from maria larosa. good morning. we are here with a hearty crowd getting used to the cold temperatures. thankfully we won't have to get used to them too much longer. we are seeing the coldest morning right now across the northeast. if you look at current temperatures we're into the single digits. many areas started off below zero. plattsburgh is 14 below. there is an edge to the air. windchills well below zero in many areas including albany. and we take a look at what we're looking at over the next couple of days. this storm is impacting the south. it will be moving up wednesday/thursday still the time frame. a couple of track scenarios. the more likely one, some accumulating snow that will likely change over to rain. major cities will see mainly snow maybe mixing in with sleet. this one is still unfolding.

>> nice to be here. >> greg, tell me. everybody -- it's a concept we would love to hold on to, never running out of money. with you "consumer reports" polled your readers and how did they manage to do it? >> we asked 25,000 of our readers over the age of 55 how much money they had, how happy they were with where they were with their money and what they wished they had done differently and the big one is when you start and how much you save. the earlier you can start, the better off you are. >> that's right. and the first tip right off the bat, because we do have a lot, is to live modestly. that's the number one rule, right, jean? >> so many people who spend more than they make on a regular basis and it's just not sustainable. if you can get yourself to save off the top and just keep yourself under that level of what you're earning, you're going to be fine. >> and where is it that people are falling when it comes to putting enough money aside for retirement when it comes to that? >> well, we know that at this point about 50% of all people are going to run out of money in

retirement. that's a very, very scary sta tis particular. but if they're in their 401(k) plans, that number drops to 20%. so that's absolutely the first thing that you should do. and if you don't have a 401(k) available to you, then open an i.r.a., contribute automatically. save first and then spend. >> that's the point, greg, that you make as well is to start saving early. so the earlier the better then. >> that's right. and, you know, we can't go back in time, of course, but if you haven't started yet, start now and try to put away as much as you can. >> contribute the maximum to the 401(k) plan. and also keeping a budget, jean, this is the next task there. >> and people hate that word. >> five years later you cringe. how important is it to live by what you put down on paper? >> it's crucial and think about it in terms of planning your spending. think about deciding first how much you're going to spend on the different things in your life, how much is going to go to

housing. it should be no more than 35%. 15% for transportation. you should always save 10% and at least about 25% for the rest of your life. if you can keep to those levels, you'll be fine. >> and, greg, one of the other things the middle aged years roughly from the 30s on to the 50s is the point that you all make to prioritize retirement over college. can you explain that? >> it sounds harsh but retirement should be your number one priority even if you are also trying to save to put the kids through college. get your retirement nailed down. contribute to that and then contribute what you can to college after that. you don't want to be dependent on your kids in your old age. >> so many of us, though, think we would like our kids to go to whatever school they want. we want to make sure that their college is taken care of. it's hard to put yourself first, though, jean. >> the roth i.r.a. is a really good vehicle for this because you can use the money in the roth i.r.a. for your retirement. you can also pull it out for college. and so if you are not saving enough today, open a roth and

start funding that. at least you'll feel like you're doing the best for your kids and you'll figure it out when you get closer to college. >> and the next point, greg, is to catch up and that is to the point where if you are still in your 50s you still have time, right, for your retirement. now is the time. >> right. and the 401(k), as jean mentioned, makes that easy. after the age of 50, you can contribute an extra $5,500 a year if you have it and that's a good way to begin to catch up. >> if you haven't started saving by the time you are in your 40s, saving 10%, which is what most financial advisers are going to tell you to do is just not enough. you have to aim for 15%. you have to run yourself through a retirement calculator. you have to see where the whole is and you really have to start to gear up and i know that's tough advice but you are going to be sorry if if you don't. >> right. absolutely. and the next major point is to pay off debt. now what kind of debt are we talking about? >> high interest rate savings debt. you have those big bills coming in every single month. you can't save because that's sitting on your head. so you have to work your way through that high interest rate

>> what should she consider? >> anyone can sell a house on their own, so that's certainly an option. but what you have to be certain you can do is be available for the showings. that's common sense. be able to negotiate the price in a nonpassionate way, which is very hard for owners to do on their own. and, most importantly, cast a wide net to get as many buyers biting on your hook as you possibly can. that being said, it's been my experience that often when an owner is trying to save that 5% or 6% the buyer is looking to save the same 5% or 6%. so i would say that approach that with caution but probably a good 10% of all homes in america today are sold direct without brokers. it's an option. >> let's try to get to tara on the phone. good morning, tara. >> caller: good morning. my husband and i are in contract on a house. we put 10% down on signing but last week our lender appraised the house at $90,000 less than

is arrested. tom yamouth has the latest for us. hi, tom. >> reporter: ann pettway will appear in court later today. as the fbi and nypd were looking for her she turned herself in. officials believe she kidnapped carlina white 23 years ago from a new york hospital. the question is if she did do it, how and why? this exclusive video shows ann pettway in custody leaving the fbi's office in bridgeport, connecticut. federal authorities say pettway kidnapped carlina white from harlem hospital in 1987 when white was just an infant. on saturday, police say pettway was spotted trying to sell items at this bridgeport pawnshop. >> she was recognized by a clerk. he made a call to us and the detectives responded to the location. >> reporter: pettway, who is 44,

turned herself in on sunday. she's wanted for breaking probation in north carolina. pettway disappeared after news broke that the woman she called her daughter, nejdra nance, was really carlina white. >> the whole family believed that ann was nejdra's mother. there was never no questions about it. >> reporter: relatives say they remember seeing pettway pregnant all those years ago but admit but no one saw her give birth to nejdra. the facts aren't known but there is a profile for baby snatchers. >> the profile of a baby snatcher is normally a woman who has recently lost a child, has a fantasy about being a mother and has not been able to achieve it. it may be someone who's faked a pregnancy for seven, eight, nine months and needs to produce the proof of the pregnancy. >> reporter: for more than two decades carl tyson and joy white had no idea what happened to their daughter. >> i think the lady cea's scare bring the baby in because she

thinks maybe we'll press charges. right now, i won't press charges. bring me the baby. >> reporter: dna confirmed carlina's true identity and she reunited with her biological mother and father. carlina said she long suspected pettway wasn't her real mother because she couldn't produce a birth certificate. carlina said she searched online and found a photo of a missing baby that looked like her own daughter. it helped solve the mystery of her life and experts say the prosecutors have a strong case. >> though this has been over a 20-year cold case for the authorities we have dna evidence. we have the statements of relatives basically going back from the time the little girl disappeared from the hospital. so i don't think this is going to be hard to put together at all. >> reporter: today in court prosecutors may reveal what evidence they have against ann pettway, something they don't have is surveillance video on that day back in august of 1987 the surveillance cameras inside harlem hospital were not working. ann?

it right. to make this classic american dish macaroni and cheese you're going french on us and making a mushroom veloute. >> you say it pretty good. we'll take it to the next level and add wild mushrooms to it. finish with fine herbs we'll describe later. >> you have the hen of the woods. >> we have hen of the woods here, shitake, oyster and button mushrooms. they have different textures. i'll explain later. you want to start with the button and the myataki mushrooms. they take longer. >> you want to chop them up? >> chop them a little bit smaller to get more flavor out of the cream. >> how do you make the cream? >> heavy cream chopped mushrooms and pour the heavy cream with the mushrooms. >> to make it low fat you can use a nonheavy cream? >> you can use a low fat -- even milk would work. >> wouldn't taste as good.

police chief turned district attorney is drafting a plan to help san francisco swamped criminal justice system. he is looking to move thousands of cases into volunteer run community courts. it would be decided on innocence or guilt and doled out nonjail sentences for crimes such as prostitution, shoplifting and minor drug violations. it would also assign violators to social services to help them change their behavior. san francisco already has several alternative courts whole substance abuse and mental illness. people all over the bay area will march today to protest the supreme court's decision 38 years ago to legalize abortion. a number of pro life events are expected to take place around the bay today including this one the los altos. the walk will be held at 1:0. it will start at st. nicholas

for some of us the new year meant a new weight loss plan, and one of the hottest, most controversial diets right now is called hcg diet. >> it's been around since the 1950s like me, so why the sudden burst of popularity? here is joy bower and dr. david katz. he is head of the prevention

center. >> let's talk about what the diet is. you only get 500 calories a day. >> it's a severe caloric restriction. at the same time you have to take these hcg drops. you either can inject the hormones or -- >> in your stomach? >> where do you inject them? >> into muscle. it can be various places. shoulder is a possibility. >> they also make a homeopathic ver version that you can put underneath your tongue. it's supposed to suppress your appetite so you're able to stick to the 50 on calories a day. but i diligently reviewed the literature on this and i can find virtually no evidence that the hormone does anything. >> you're starving all the time. that doesn't make sense to me. you take a hormone that says, i

think i'll eat for two now. >> the interesting thing is where the idea came from in the first place, and it may be that during pregnancy, the whole cascade of hormones does help burn some of mom's fat reserve to make fuel for the growing baby if need be. i can't think of any other explanation for this. >> but that's god's way of doing that, which is nature. here's what doesn't make sense to me. this hormone is not a natural one, this is a synthetic hormone, right? >> you can derive this from animal sources or it can be synthesized. either way, it is essentially the same hormone that is produced during pregnancy, but there is no evidence that i can find, in fact, there are a number of negative trials. >> let's just say with the people who like the diet, okay, these are companies who endorse this diet. this is what they say. we highly recommend that a person be monitored by a doctor when doing the hcg diet. we suggest people refrain from any very low calorie diet program that does not offer medical supervision.
