forecast and christina loren. good morning, christina. good morning, scott. another beautiful day is already shaping up for us. a little warmer in some cities than where we ended up yesterday. 74 degrees in gilroy. unbelievable. 69 in san jose. and if you are waking up in the east bay, thank you for joining us. 68 degrees was the high in oakland yesterday. now, you were down a couple degrees from the day before because of all the fog. no exception this morning. we have really dense fog in the east bay. and it is also working up to the north bay. take it easy out there. the south bay looks good heading in from the east bay to the south bay. you should be okay. white right now it is 37 degrees this gilroy. another warm day. we are going 75 in gilroy today. what we are expecting is changes heading through this weekend. we have a very slight chance of rain. the chance was bumped up last night by the national weather service. we'll tell you why, what we think and i don't think we'll see much in the way of showers. next week looks like a normal

pattern shaping up again. we'll talk all about that. we'll find out about the morning drive now with mike. good morning. a similar report as far as temperatures go. we have had a similar issue for me. before the temperatures warm up, you talked about the fog. that will be an issue coming across the cartinas and venetian bridges. there's a fog advisory for both of those bridges. heading over to davis and sacramento, keep that in mind for interstate 880 with tough difficulty as far as visibilities go. at 69 in antioch, we'll see speeds dip coming across the antioch bridge. it could be tough to see over the water fog as well. 580 out of the altamonte pass, no problems in the westbound direction. a 14-minute drive eastbound into the altamonte pass. traci is at central valley. there's thick fog there causing issues with visibility.

construction is over the bay bridge and the san ramon. we'll have more in our next report. this morning an oakland police officer is off the street after killing a man wanted in a drive-by shooting. the police chased two men in a car for ten minutes late wednesday afternoon. that chase ended at 85th avenue and san leandro streets. the suspect fired shots on lockwood near 78th avenue earlier wednesday. police say the man who was shot was armed with two weapons. officers arrested another man in the car. police say they lost radio communication during a crucial time of the chase. >> enter interstate 880 traveling westbound to downtown oakland and exiting 65th avenue. at this point our communications system went down and the officers talked to themselves. >> captain joiner says radio problems are nothing new for the department. the officer is on paid leave during the investigation which is standard police procedure. this morning the oakland school district is dealing with

questions on its own police force. school police shot a young man to death near skyline high school but was it justified? today jean elle is talking to the suspect's family. >> reporter: his family gathered at the oakland unified meeting where an officer shot and killed 20-year-old brown saturday night. officers were patrolling outside skyline high school during a winter dance. officers say they spotted a honda on joaquin miller road with its hazard lights on at 9:is a and investigated. brown was in the passenger seat. at some point he started to stab an officer with a screwdriver. that's when the officer's partner started shooting killing brown. >> i was just so upset. my son got murdered by school police. these people are supposed to

protect our children. >> reporter: brown's mother says her son did not deserve to be shot to death. the car turned out to be stolen with a gun inside, but brown's family says he never got out of the car, never picked up the gun and was not a real threat with a screwdriver. >> he has a father, he has little brothers, he has that brother plus an older brother. he has a lot of family that loves him. >> reporter: and they have a lot of questions for the school district police. the family of a baby girl mourning her death this morning after she was accidentally hit by a car in oakland. the 1-year-old was killed outside her home at 9:00 last night. she was taken to children's hospital in oakland. the family says her organs will be donated. a memorial day today to remember a young oakland woman killed in a snowboarding accident. rasheeka keith died after crashing into a ski lift tower on saturday afternoon. this happened at the grand libichan resort near lake tahoe.

she hit the tower while riding her snowboard like a sled instead of strapping it to her feet. she was a student at uc santa cruz and was 22 years old. the memorial will be at the uc santa cruz campus from 12:30 to 2:00. a green light for livermore oos new speed limit. some will ride 5 miles an hour, others 10 miles an hour. a few will drop. the changes were needed because of state speed limit calculations not because of faster drivers. all right. we'll check in with christina. we were hearing about fog on the roads. we have at least two bridges with fog warnings. is that fairly normal with this kind of weather? >> yes, it is normal. what is abnormal is to have such a strong offshore flow for this time of the year. the santa ana winds are kicking in los angeles, traditionally a summertime pattern. and what that means for los angeles today is 85 degrees in anaheim. for us that means temperatures

towards 75 degrees in gilroy. in the east bay, unfortunately, i don't think it will be quite as warm as where we started out this week. that's because we have really dense fog out there. it will take a while for that fog to lift and break apart. overall, we are still looking 10 to 15 degrees above average. a few showers on the way towards this weekend possibly. we'll talk about that coming up. for right now we'll get a check on the morning drive with mike. good morning, christina. you are talking about the fog, scott is right, we have fog advisories for two bridges in the east bay. also for 680, the have a knee venetian bridge. there's construction north of the freeway itself. it sounds like crews had to close down the on-ramp there as the construction came very close to the on and off access there. not a major issue because of light volumes of traffic, but fog could be an issue traveling 680 heading up through walnut creek, concord and the foggy

area we saw yesterday out at bay point. we are seeing a flip near 63, which is pittsburgh and bay points. we have fog for the venetian and cartinas bridge. a clear view of the bay bridge toll plaza, but we have construction on the lower deck. they closed one lane to lower speeds across the bay. back to you. the color-coded system that tells americans how likely it is terrorists will strike is about to get an overhaul. we'll see why it is changing and the new system that will replace it. plus, tough times all around. the boss may not be handing out raises this year, but you can get your hands on free perks to make your life easier. and see why women are turning to facebook friends and turning them into lovers. a life look at the bay bridge. mike talked about the construction, you can see the flashing lights there. we'll take a look coming up.

employers are paying less this year. there may not be much you can do about salary, but job perks are something else altogether. >> reporter: as the california and unemployment rate is at 12.5%, many people are just happy to get a job offer. many companies can't give new hires bigger salaries, but they can and do throw in other perks. >> we spoke to over 500 hr representatives that said for the right candidate perks like education and tell commuting would absolutely be something to put on the table to secure them in place. >> reporter: here are the top three perks employers say they'll offer this year. education reimbursement, flexible work hours or telecommuting and mentoring programs. these are all things job-seekers say they want. >> that could save, you know, $20 to $30 a week in not having to drive a long way, especially across the bridge, to the

this bloom so early. a lot of new growth on the roses out there. and what that means is if we see another freeze, which we are expecting, we have a couple months of winter left, that means you need to protect your plants. temperaturewise we are looking good. i think you'll enjoy the temperatures we are expecting later on this afternoon. this is going to be the warmest day of the week in the south bay. a little bit cooler today in the east bay and the north bay. they are starting out with really dense fog. 68 degrees yesterday in oakland making for a mild afternoon. we'll see more of the same today. it is probably going to be noon before you see that sunshine break through those low clouds. 37 degrees right now in gilroy where we hit 74 yesterday. 75 in the forecast for today. 46 right now in hayward. 46 in concord with pretty heavy fog moving in from the san joaquin valley. what that means for us is a dense fog advisory in place until 11:00 a.m. for the north and east bays. after that temperatures climb to the 70-degree mark. 10 to 15 degrees above average.

then a few showers as we head into this sunday, possibly for the north bay. a really slight chance, but right now we are trying to get whatever we can. let's find out if we are getting a good drive this morning with mike inouye. good morning. well, not too crowded, that's a benefit. here's a live look at the bay bridge where we are showing you the flashlights on the bottom of the screen. the bottom deck has all lanes closed passed treasure island. both directions have one lane closure overnight. have u.s. to reduce the speeds, for safety sake, we are heading across the bridges there slower. you can see traffic in 50s in spots. more folks are joining the commute there. the fog advisory for the cartinas and vene the venetia bridge. very tough to see on surface streets. you can imagine what it is like over the water. there's a car coming through the mist. the traffic advisory across the

two bridges there. >> keep it simple. slow it down. for all the talk on emerging markets like hong kong and they juan, it is hurting american companies. companies setting up there are doing just fine. apple's reports went up $2.6 billion the last two months there. let's go to nicole lappan at cnbc headquarters. >> reporter: the dow flirted with the 12,000-level yesterday crossing the mark several times before pulling back by the close. the fed deciding to stay course, not abandoning the $6,000 bond buying program. until more jobs are creating the policy won't change. big moves in asia today. japan's credit rating was cut for the first time in nine years. that's a big deal. we got a lot of big data out today.

unemployment in the united states, durable goods, pending home sames and a bunch of earnings from caterpillar and proctor and gamble to name a few. the dow closing up eight points yesterday, 11,985 is where we ended. the nasdaq also ending up 20 to 2739. meanwhile, ford is recalling about 525,000 older model windstar minivans most registered in the united states. the recall is for 1999 to 2003 vehicles in cold weather areas because of corrosion causing parts to separate and reduce steering. i guess this doesn't resonate with you guys watching the flowers bloom, but ford is aware of seven minor accidents related to this problem. they will notify owners coming up next month. you know this better than anybody, starbucks is announcing rising coffee prices will hurt profits more this year than previously thought. but here's what we care about. it is insisting it will not,

76% of women say they would look at a boyfriend's e-mails if left open. 9% of men admitted to do the same. 69% there. good news for iphone cruisers. verizon is offering an iphone and at&t is offering customer who is had a previous unlimited data plan can switch back. at&t stopped offering the unlimited plan last summer when customers switched to two new limited plans. the new officer doesn't apply to new iphone users. they have to buy the data in the two new limited plans. new this morning, secretary of homeland security janet nepal a lone will announce the color-coded system put into place after 9/11 will no longer be used. the obama administration had been discussing this for months, but the official announcement comes later today. the new system is more about

"today in the east bay's" tracie potts will here with what will replace it and when. >> reporter: you hear it in airports -- today homeland security janet napolitano will announce the government is retiring the color-coded system to tell them how likely it is terrorists will strike. after studying it for a year, officials say it is outdated. the colors scare americans but don't really tell them what to do. >> they are going to be represented by five colors, green, blue, yellow, orange and red. >> reporter: the system was introduced after 9/11. the levels have changed 16 times hitting red only once four years ago when terrorists threaten to blow up planes arriving from great britain. it has never been lowered to blue or green. right now the threat level is yellow, elevated, where it has been stuck for four years despite the christmas underwear bomber, the attempted times square bomb and package bombs discovered on cargo planes last

african-americans have a gene mutation to prevent them from heart disease. scientists at john hopkins university say the mutation is in a quarter of african-americans. this variation reduces the risk of narrowed or clogged arteries in patients. the finding is surprising because heart disease afflicts a greater number of african-americans than any other race. a new study out today suggests that staying outside in cool winter air may be a way to shed some unwanted pounds. it says staying inside in a warm house during the winter months doesn't force your body to work to stay warm. the study recommends keeping your thermostat below 70 and spending time outdoors. a new report from the fda says breast implants may be linked to a rare cancer. there are 60 cases of this lymphoma in scar tissue that forms around breast implants. the cancer has been found in breast tissue only three out of 100 million without the

implants. so breast implants are suspect. they are not being removed from the market and the fda considers them to be safe. we are talking about staying warm or staying cool outside, rather, but christina, if you go outside it is not cool. >> you are right about that. it has been abnormally warm. right now it is a little bit cool in places that are picking up the most fog. 39 degrees in livermore. 36 degrees in fairfield. and 38 degrees right now in napa. we are going to see a beautiful day with lots of sunshine this afternoon. and temperatures are climbing. a little bit warmer than where we ended up yesterday in the south bay. let me show you what we are expecting because there are changes as early as tomorrow. we are going to drop in temperature by about 5 to 10 degrees heading through tomorrow afternoon. that's because we have a system on the way. this will bring on an onshore flow. we have had a really strong offshore flow for the past few days. so that will change things for us. we'll see more of that fog coming along the peninsula as opposed to drifting in from the san joaquin valley. that's what we are expecting.
