out there. i encountered one dense patch on my way up through campbell this morning. keep that in mind. 42 degrees in hayward. heading throughout this afternoon, high pressure is firmly in control of our weather pattern. and that's going to make for a really nice week. each and every day we are talking about a lot of sunshine. we'll let you know just how warm it will be coming up. right now we'll send it back to you. a popular tourist destination is a crime scene this morning. police are investigating the shooting deaths of two people inside a souvenir store at fisherman's wharf. bob redell is joining us from there with the latest. >> reporter: that's what makes this crime more remarkable as to the fact of where it happened. this is luggage and suv nears along main street here in fisherman's wharf. this is very popular with visitorsle. it was 8:20 last night when a map went into the store and shot

two employees, a man and a woman. they were pronounced dead at the scene. police arrested a man a short time later. >> there is one suspect that is in custody. he's being interviewed currently. we don't know much about the motive in this particular crime, but it is something that doesn't normally happen around here. it is a huge traffic did for the city. >> reporter: sfpd says the scene was contained fairly quick len a and no one else was in danger. it is not clear if this was a random crime or if the suspect knew his victims. reporting live in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." thank you, bob. travel is expected to begin today for a bay area teenager who is accused of setting off bombs inside a san mateo high school. police say 17-year-old alex yushak walked into his former

high school hoping to kill his chemistry teacher and as many students and staff as possible in 2009. investigators say he went in armed with ten homemade pipe bombs and a sword. after he set off the first two bombs that injured one person he was tackled by an english teacher. he is currently in custody without bail, but he could face life in prison if he's convicted of seven felonies. he has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. the man accused of strangling a young sacramento woman driving her to san francisco and then lighting her car on fire is expected to appear in court in a few hours. 29-year-old ahmed johnson is being charged with murder and arson in connection with the killing of 23-year-old vanessa herrera of sacramento. herrera's body was found inside her burning car one week ago today in the lower hate neighborhood. motive for the killing was a relationship between the two that is still being investigated. a massive fund-raising effort is underway to keep a

specialized health clinic open in san francisco. the community is rallying around the clinic asking for more time to save the facility that has served san francisco for more than 30 years and served the gay and transgender community. last week the clinic's board voted to shut it down because of dire finances. a fund-raiser was held last night trying to collect some of the $250,000 that's needed to keep that clinic open. local and state lawmakers showed their support as well. >> this is san francisco. we are no stranger to crisis. people come together in this city, and i think we are seeing a perfect demonstration of that right now. you've got over 500, maybe up to 1,000 people here for the fund-raiser, i'm sure there will be more. elected officials from here up to sacramento, everyone is pulling together quickly. >> the clinic has until february 7th to come up with the money. they raised $50,000 last night. 5:03 right now. another bay area city is talking

about banning plastic bags. the daly city councilman plans to introduce the plastic bag ban at the next council meeting. it would ban plastic bags at supermarkets and other local stores. the group will sue if daly city passes the law without doing an environmental impact report. the coalition argues the increase in paper bag use could be as environmentally damaging as the plastic bags themselves. today is a big day for governor jerry brown as he's set to deliver his state of the state address in sacramento. but in the midst of the mind-boggling budget deficit he probably won't have a lot to say to make californians happy. "today in the bay's" marla tellez has a preview of tonight. >> reporter: this is not the first time he has taken the stage at the state capital as the third-term governor. jerry brown has delivered the state of the state address, but

never in such dire economic times. his speech is expected to focus on california's almost $25.5 billion deficit and 12.5% unemployment rate. so far he has proposed closing the deficit through spending cuts and a ballot measure extending temporary tax hikes on vehicle sales. the latest survey conducted by the public policy institute of california shows 41% of californians approve of a job he is doing while 39% have not made up their minds yet. so if he delivers and address of substance and one californians can believe in his approval rating is sure to rise. tonight's state of the state address is scheduled to start at 5:00. we will stream it live for you on our website, just log on to

nbcbayarea.com. we also have crews in sacramento covering the event. we'll bring you lye team coverage from the state capital starting at 5:00 tonight. laura, back to you. thank you very much. the san francisco's animal care and control agency is running out of city money and could soon be turning to companies for funding. the 40-employee agency houses 600 cats and dogs at any given time. it has a $4.5 million budget, but the city is planning to cut that figure by 10%. san francisco voters have repeatedly rejected private advertising on city property but the director of the city agency doesn't care. she says they desperately need the money. right now we want to check in with christina. we are taking a peek at the forecast for monday morning. >> well, it is going to be a beautiful day, guys. that much i can tell you. temperatures are in the 40s already. and we are done with the rain from yesterday.

gloomy, gloomy sunday, but we'll see a lot of sunshine for the second half of today. and temperaturewise it will be a nice one. patchy one with a cold start. a mild afternoon to follow. mostly sunny conditions and a grad yum warm up heading into the weekendful we'll climb in our temperatures one to two degrees each and every day this week making for another 70-degree beautiful weekend, at least that's what we are looking at right now. here's what we have on the roadways with mike inouye. >> we are looking at the weekend, too. oh, it is monday. here's the golden gate bridge. a nice easy drive. crews just moved the center divide. you can see it blinking at the top of the screen. they have moved it through two northbound lanes and four southbound lanes getting into the city. a smooth drive across the bridge, but the fog is coming through the area. also construction in union square. i marked it on the map. this will affect the muni lines through the area. they will be rerouted with a short detour. it could add a few minutes on to

good monday morning to you. taking a live look out, a beautiful shot of the bay bridge this morning. we expect highs and lows across the bay area to be pretty good. we are approaching 60 degrees in many spots. it is mid-afternoon in cairo. protestors returned to the streets and their message is spreading worldwide. scott mcgrew is monitoring the latest in the shaky situation. >> reporter: the latest we have from cairo is that the streets are very quiet. it is the afternoon there. you are seeing video from earlier this saturday and sunday. meanwhile, the u.s. state department has chartered flights to get americans out of egypt. there's not been a single case of violence against americans but the situation there is so fluent that the u.s. government doesn't want to take chances

prochlt test or thes took to the streets for six straight days demanding democratic reform and human rights. oppressive governments everywhere are under pressure. in neighboring sudan a copy cat protest and the sudanese are protesting the government. in china the government blocked many news reports and internet traffic coming out of egypt. so, brent, a lot of this is not just egypt. it is what started in tunisia. how it spreads and gets ideas into the heads of people in oppressive governments all over the world. >> and in many cases, they are blocking the internet, so they are trying to keep information like that from flowing to other people. a florida woman accused of killing her two teenager children will make her first court appearance today. florida police say 50-year-old

julia powers she can ner shot her 13-year-old son twits twice in the head on friday for talking back. it happened in the family car on their way to soccer practice. investigators say she then turned the family car around, went back to the tampa home and shot her 16-year-old daughter in the face as she studied on the computer. julie sheckner is set to appear in court later this morning. after several delays an accused polygamist is expected to make his pretrial appearance today. warren jeffs is trying to stall his trial which is set for february. jeffs is accused of bigamy and aggravated sexual assault with two children back in 2008. he ran several religious compounds around the country and faces trials in a number of states for similar alleged crimes. a floodgate of secret documents is waiting to be unleashed. the founder of the whistleblower website wikileaks plans to

release a treasure-trove of documents if his site is shut down. in an interview with "60 minutes" julian assange says he has backups to all his data. over 100,000 people are ready to continue the work in case of an emergency. assange is no stranger to controversy. he is in a criminal investigation over the secret leaking of military documents. the swedish government is trying to extradite him for alleged sex crimes as well. meg whitman will make one of her first appearances since losing the gubernatorial race tonight. she is going to take part in a roundtable in redwood city tonight. she's a new member of the hewlett-packard board of directors. she'll talk to 100 women executives at the event tonight. we are told this event will be clopzed to the public. we told you last week google was hiring. now we know a little more about what they are looking for in

applicants. the bay area tech giant is looking for software developers to help out in the battle against apple. they are trying to give apple a run for its money by creating applications for smart phones and other mobile devices. they are looking for those with ideas for mobile apps. the mobile app industry is expected to bring more than $15 billion in this year. triple what it made last year. six days and counting until the big game, super bowl xlv. >> a lot of people watch from the super bowl party. not many have a ticket to the big game to see it in person. nbc bay area's loren scott is here to introduce us to a person who has been to many super bowls. >> next week in dallas will be my 45th super bowl. >> reporter: like so many great stories, it starts with trying to woe a woman, in this case it

was a day trip to super bowl one. >> i decided to go back in 1967 because i wanted to impress my girlfriend. she was my date, not a girlfriend. i thought it would be cool to go down to sfo, take a jet plane down to l.a., go to a football game, have dipper and come home that night. and it should be really impressed. >> reporter: she wasn't too impressed and they decided to just be friend, but larry's love affair with the super bowl began. and by super bowl 3 rp he could tell it was a match made in heaven. >> this was a great game between the jets and the colts. i'm going to try again next year. by super bowl five and six i was hooked. >> not long after he found someone who understood the love of his game. >> i got married after super bowl 11. i took my life to the rose bowl. she knew there i wasn't going to quit. >> reporter: she also knew he

was a life-long 49ers fan. so five super bowls held a special significance. >> my favorite super bowl is 49 because i'm a 49er fan. the colts and jets was the one i consider one of my favorite of all time because the jets won, and i think they were like a 14, 16-point underdog. >> reporter: getting tickets to the rest of the games required help. >> starting around super bowl six and seven i made a connection with a guy who worked for the nfl. i was able to get tickets through him. and then as that evolved by about super bowl 20 i was able to get a single ticket to the super bowl from the nfl. >> reporter: now jacobson is one of four fans who have made it to every super bowl. perhaps you have seen the season of commercials called the never miss super bowl club. at 71 years old he doesn't plan

on missing one any time soon. >> i wonder how much money he has spent on going to a super bowl. >> well, yeah, the early tickets probably were a heck of a lot cheaper than a good seat at this year's game. they are selling tickets not even in the arena outside. 5:19. we want to check the forecast. it is monday. we had a bit of rain over the weekend. >> yeah, we actually had some free watering done for us this weekend, but this week you need to water yourself because high pressure is regaining control and will keep the sunshine over the bay area every single day this week. we have no more rain in the forecast for at least the next seven days. here's the system of low pressure that brought us the showers yesterday. it is now retreating to the east as high pressure moves in from the west. the two combined create a tight pressure gradient. we'll see breezy conditions throughout the day today. then heading through tomorrow some morning fog and a beautiful sunny sky later in the afternoon. so today we are calling it mostly sunny to partly cloudy

because of all the fog this morning in the east bay and north bay. we are also seeing this develop along the peninsula. 43 in santa cruz. 47 degrees in san francisco. turning over to the upper 50s and low 60s heading throughout this afternoon. 60 degrees in oakland. 61 in redwood city. 59 degrees in san francisco. this is very seasonable for where we should be this time of the year. normal temperatures are near 57 degrees. we are seeing more of the norm for today. we'll see the numbers climb heading throughout the rest of the week. take a look at the extended forecast. 61 degrees by tuesday. we are up to the 69-degree range by this coming sunday. so keep that in mind. it will be a beautiful week. you'll need those spring clothes later on, just not today. now, we want to treat you to something pretty fancy. a napa weekend, how does that sound? two lucky couples are going to win free lonling, fine dining and private wine tasting. i think brent and laura's eyes

good morning, folks. it is 5:24 exactly this morning. we'll let you know what it is like in the livermore commute. we'll look at the maps here. no problems on the roadways. a smooth drive, but look at this little blip eastbound on 580 past north livermore avenue. that popped up five minutes ago. i have my eyes on that, but right now the westbound commute direction is likely to build with the commute volume. the eastbound shouldn't be a problem but we'll watch. no thick fog right now. sunol we do see patchy fog. that's why we see a blip here or there coming through the sunol grade. down through the south bay traffic is nice. northbound 101 at the 4 we have construction. we often see floor speeds registering through the area, but near 680 that's a little unusual. 880 past the oakland coliseum area northbound with the taillights, the construction off the southbound side near hyatt street has cleared. we have a smooth drive near the toll plaza.

start the week now. we'll check in with the experts on this monday morning, january 31st, on "today in the bay." good morning, everybody. thank you for joining us. i'm brent cannon. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. 5:30 this monday morning. we want to get things started with a look at the forecast, christina. i hope it won't rain today. i wore my suede shoes. >> and i'm not stepping on them either. >> good thing, brent. he does have a pair of blud blue suede shoes. we'll maybe see those later this week. in terms of visibility, we have reduced visibilities in the forth bay. it will become more widespread in terms of the patchy, dense fog in the east bay. livermore, concord and fairfield are doing good for three miles or better. you are down to a quarter mile in the north bay. take it easy out there where you are seeing the most fog. we'll have partly cloudy skies this afternoon.

those fog-free along the peninsula this morning, for the most part, we are fog-free at this time. it will be another sunny day with the offshore flow. 47 degrees in san francisco. hour-by-hour forecast shows you by 3:00 p.m. we'll climb to the 60-degree mark in oakland. san rafael, redwood city, a pretty nice day, but you need the jacket throughout. that's a first look at your forecast. more for you coming up. now back to you. thank you, christina. a pair of earthquakes rattled parts of the bay area early this morning as most people were asleep, but you may have felt them. they were centered in the east bay. christie smith is live in concord with details on the quakes and what people felt. >> reporter: good morning to you. yes, the stronger one, a 3.0, just enough to get your bed shaking, at least that's what one woman told us this morning. she is inside making coffee, but we talked with a lot of people this morning. i have to tell you most folks said they really didn't feel it, and that's because they were thinking they were asleep at the time this hit overnight. the stronger one, actually both of them according to the usgs.

several small quakes have hit the east bay the last week. one of the last ones overnight at 12:30 in the morning near the cop mccord/martinas area. it was centered 9.6 miles down. this has a lot of people logging on to the usgs website saying they have felt it. more than 100 people reported that they felt it overnight. also east of fremont at 1:17 another quake, a magnitude 2.3. this one was four miles deep. if you were up overnight briefly and thought you may have felt it, now owe know it was a pair of quakes to start your week. reporting live in concord, christie smith, "today in the bay." thank you. the search for a missing 4-year-old boy from paterson continues this morning. the little boy has been gone for nearly two weeks and today

investigators will scour the delta mandota canal by air and on the ground hoping for any sign of juliani cardenas or his kidnapper. dozens of people came together to pray for the return of him last night. they believe he was kidnapped by jose rodriguez. investigators got a tip of him driving his car into the canal. they found it and pulled it from the water on friday, but there was no sign of cardenas or rodriguez. the chances are slim someone survived after going into the canal, but the boy's mother is asking for people not to give up hope. >> we don't know where jose is, only god knows. my gut tells me that my son is still alive. and i need help for people to keep their eyes out. >> she also says people should continue posting flyers and not give up on her boy. a daredevil surfer who nearly died while surfing at mavericks near half-moon bay about a week ago is alive now

and beating the odds. jacob trette was pummeled by a massive wave, and this morning the "today" show has his exclusive story. marla tellez is here with a preview of what we'll hear later on this morning. it is an amazing story. >> reporter: it is. good morning to you. it was only nine days ago that jacob trette almost drowned after being knocked bay giant wave near half-moon bay. today he's recovering at his parents' home in orange county. and the "today" show will interview him and his friend who was in the water with him. that's going to happen later this morning. now, it was saturday the 22nd when the southern california surfer was caught by about a 20-foot wave and then found floating face down. trette was airlifted to stanford medical center and listed in critical condition. in a short amount of time he has gone from a medically-induced coma to stable and now out of the hospital. it was only trette's second time surfing at the infamous maverick

site known for the annual big wave surfing competition. his first time being just a day before on that friday, the 21st. the friend surfing with him describes what happened. >> it was a very set of waves that came through. it was a rogue set. it was all up and down the coast. i know that it surprised everybody. >> reporter: again, you can catch the full interview with trette and his buddy coming up at 7:00 on the "today" show. as for the maverick competition, it could be cancelled this year because of a lock of big waves at the site. so if the swell doesn't come by the end of february the competition will be canceled. brent and laura? >> that's an important distinction, mavericks is the site and the name of the contest. he was at the location but not the competition. >> the waves are huge once they have the competition on.

what about the forecast? we'll check in with christina to look at that for us. >> good morning. i know what it is like to be one of the triplets because i really missed you guys on friday. >> oh, thank you. >> i know what it is like to be one of them now, and it gets kind of lonely. we are talking about low pressure right now. low pressure brought us the rain showers yesterday. now it is retreating off to the east. we have high pressure building in. and this is a strong ridge of high pressure taking these clouds completely vertical here as the clouds wrap up and around this amplifying ridge. we are already seeing that offshore push here. and those are the offshore winds that push the fog from the east bay towards the peninsula. so we are socked in this morning in the north bay. and it is starting to get a little worse in the east bay. i think that some of that fog will drift towards the peninsula heading throughout this morning. we have less than a quarter of a mile in santa rosa and novato. we are seeing viz. come down in livermore and concord. fog is drifting around out

there. keep that in mind, take it easy. once you hit the afternoon lunch break we should see mostly clear conditions. and these numbers will jump up from the low 40s to upper 30s into the mid-50s. rounding out the day at 60 degrees in oakland and napa. 60 in almaden valley. looking good all the way throughout the week. i'll gradually climb in temperatures each and every day. we'll talk more about what's to come in terms of the warmest cities coming up later. let's go to my favorite traffic reporter -- >> chopped liver. you missed brent and laura on friday but i was right over here. okay, folks. we'll go out to livermore. eastbound we have the slowing that showed up coming through livermore. we love getting back to work. and we have no problems westbound. the eastbound slowing cleared up. westbound there's a blip heading over to dublin. keep that in mind heading out to antioch with patchy fog. right on schedule, there's that 26 showing up going over to

the american stock markets wake up this morning to more unrest in egypt. scott mcgrew is joining us. worries on friday in some stocks. >> reporter: yes, the dow fell more than 1% 5%, 1.5%. at the overall impact of what's going on, american business does not have major investment in egypt. not the way it does in, say, germany or china, but the worry is protests there will be destabilizing to the world economy. remember, this started in tunisia. now egypt, sudan, possibly syria. the uncertainty to where this stops is the problem. dow futures are flat this morning. you can't think about that region without thinking about oil. egypt is not a major exporter of oil. it pumps it but not much, and most of the oil is used domestically. but a lot of oil passes through the suez canal. while the canal has been protest-free, the unrest is enough to make speculators speculate. meanwhile, the u.s. government is in an awkward position

supporting both the democratic reforms the protestors want and long-time allie hosni mubarak. tracie potts continues our coverage in washington. good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, scott. the obama administration is walking a tightrope, here's a country that we have been allies with for some 30 years now. and the government, president obama said they want to support what the people want, peaceful protests, but that they have to denounce the violence and try to get those americans out of there. we got late word this morning that the first of those charter flights that the state department is trying to organize has now gotten off the ground. it is headed to sigh press sign cypress. it is chaos at the cairo airport as other countries try to get their members and citizens out as well.

with her son when she started having contractions. she called her husband but ten minutes later the baby was on its way. williams called 911. with the help of the operator she delivered a little girl, ava. >> what's your emergency? >> i just had my baby on the floor. >> is the baby breathing? >> yes, she is breathing. she is purple though. she wasn't crying, she was purple, but i could tell she was breathing. and i had this great feeling and knew she was okay. >> the home video shows the mom and baby being taken to the hospital only a couple blocks away. doctors say ava is perfectly healthy. and now her dad has a new appreciation for the mother of his children. hopefully all dads do. >> that's kind of my reaction. hey, they are purple, but i uess that's how they are when ome out. we'll be right back. th
