>> welcome back. there are new developments to tell you about in egypt this morning. this is a live look at the city there where tens of thousands have gathered once again and tensions have turned to violence in the streets of central cairo. we'll have an update for you. >> i'm bob redell live at sfo. how that massive winter storm in the midwest is causing headaches for travelers trying to get out of the bay area. we'll have that coming up. >> and today kicks off a warming trend that's going to bring our temperatures into mid-70s by this weekend. who cares what i think. the groundhog's forecast is in. we'll tell you what he thinks coming up. >> i'll tell you what i know, that wind blowing the fog out of the roadway but the wind now the top story, wind advisories for some bridges and debris blowing across the roadways. i've got my eyes on it for you. we'll let you know. >> a nice day, taking a live look before the sun comes up.
6:01 am
it's wednesday, february 2, "today in the bay." >> good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm brent cannon. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. big story of the day, the 2,000-mile storm. we've got video from chicago where the wind is so strong it's really knocking people over. city workers are needed to help other people cross the street. you don't want to go out if you're there. the weather is grounding flights from coast to coast, including some here in the bay area. bob redell is live at sfo with more on what's happening right now. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. you see this line of people trying to get through security here at terminal 2 at sfo. i have no idea where they are going. i can tell you one place they are not headed, that is chicago. o'hare and midway t two major airports in the chicago area, are shut down. and already at this early hour
6:02 am
all of the flights, i'm talking out of sfo now on american, united and southwest, have been canceled in the morning. we are understanding that southwest might try to get a flight out later in the afternoon. that's going to be depending upon the winter snowstorm out there. you can see these pictures there it's brutal weather. for chicago this is the worst snow fall on record for a february. over a foot of snow, the high winds that you were mentioning. this happened yesterday as well. canceling flights at sfo, what we did not hear were people being stranded because they were able to go back to their home or hotel. people like debbie we caught up with early trying to get on a flight on southwest airlines. she's the lady with the mound of luggage there on the cart. yesterday she was supposed to be in columbus, ohio. obviously that didn't happen because unfortunately she didn't have a flight connecting through chicago. >> this is my fourth attempt.
6:03 am
i'm actually moving so it's really dramatic. >> when did you try to get out? >> originally yesterday morning. i ended up rebooking almost three times. i was supposed to start a new job today. i got 300 pounds of luggage. hopefully i'll make it. >> reporter: again, if you are trying to get from chicago from the bay area today you want to check in advance before coming out to any of the airports. even if you are trying to flew through that general direction you want to check. there's going to be the trickle down effect. we spoke with the spokesperson here earlier, from what he's understanding the storm is going to be heading east so they wouldn't be surprised if later you see cancellations along the eastern seaboard. reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. >> we have a lot more on the storm's impact.
6:04 am
bob will be back and we'll have a report from north texas where snow and ice impacting the super bowl. >> a mountain of paperwork could mean delays for pg&e and it could be even longer until we know the cause of the deadly pipe line explosion in san bruno. marla is live near that explosion site in san bruno. she's got an update. >> reporter: brent, good morning. you might say that pg&e is buried under a pile of paperwork. you could equate the problem as facing searching for a needle in a hay stack. finding the right document that can prove it set safe gas pressure limits for the pipes, pg&e says it has brought in outside help to search more than a million records throughout 20 offices. they are searching through 1.25 million records. close to 300 people are on the
6:05 am
job 24 hours a day seven day as week. the utilities commission has given pg&e until march 15 to find the records. if they are not found it may be forced to shut down for days to run tests to find weaknesses. the explosion here that killed eight people and wiped out dozens of homes happened almost exactly five months ago. next wednesday will mark five months. in addition to the paperwork problem, new gas leaks have been discovered close to where we are. coming up i'm going to tell you exactly where the new gas leaks have popped up. live in san bruno. 6:15 am
and anti-government demonstrators are now clashing in the streets, we've seen these protests become somewhat violent. it looks like now they put up some trucks separating the two groups, they are throwing rocks at each other. there is a distance separating the two. the police have somewhat been involved but the military police have been trying to take more of a stand off-ish approach in this, not wanting to insight anything. but at the same time we hear reports that some of the people who were starting the violence are dressed as police officers, and they are not sure if they are actual police officers or people impersonating them. we have seen some violence now in egypt. tens ever thousands in the town square. we're watching the situation. we'll update you all morning long on what's going on out of egypt. >> calmer on the streets of san jose as there is a new police chief starting his first full day on the job here with us on today in the bay.
