south of market. here are the maps, westbound market is closed right at the intersection where it meets with castro street and 17th. those are major roadways. this is going to be a problem for westbound and eastbound traffic coming through the intersection. if you are using the muni line heading underground, that won't be affected. just surface traffic going on there. we are watching the surface roadways, be sow but so far 101 is not affected. the bay bridge toll plaza is slow as well as the backup slowing because of the metering lights just turned on. we'll end with this shot. back to the desk. 6:49 right now. new this morning, for many people in the bay area, it has been a sleepless night waiting for word from loved ones trapped in cairo. one elderly woman is stuck inside her apartment armed only with a knife and a rolling pin. she shared her ordeal with brian williams last night. her friend lives in the bay area this morning. she is sharing her story with marla tellez who is joining us live in hayward.
6:50 am
marla? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. yes, we are live at ellen feeney's home in hayward. she is a very close friend to mary thornberry who spoke to brian williams last night. she's stuck in her small apartment in tahrir square in cairo where all the violence is happening. and you spoke to her earlier this morning. she had what to say? >> i did speak to her. and she has been in the apartment for six or seven days straight. she's probably the only person left in the building. she lives on the sixth floor. they have broken all the panels in the door. 12 or 13 men are trying to get in. they are putting their heads through and their arms through. she has a little knife. and she said she has a rolling pin. and she's very defenseless at the moment. >> reporter: 76 years old. and in pretty good health, but you can only have so much food
6:51 am
and water. this is something you can't prepare for. >> no one was prepared for this. no one. it is not in the nature of egyptian people to be like this. but seeing that they have been living under the system that they have been, it is just the perfect storm. >> reporter: i know she's keeping good spirits to remain strong. do you think -- has she expressed her fight to you? >> she's expressed it to me. my daughter is speaking to her. my daughter who also lives in egypt. and she's very cautious about saying anything that would fighten katherine because my daughter is in the same situation, but she is outside the city. >> reporter: so your daughter for all intensive purposes is a little safer than the situation that poor mary is in the midst of right now? >> she is a little bit safer, but many of her friends who have gone down to the square have been beaten up.
6:52 am
and their medical equipment and everything have been confiscated from them. >> reporter: of course, we were just seeing a live picture from the square that is certainly active. it is about 4:30 in the afternoon if i'm not mistaken or close to 5:00 p.m. right now. hopefully we can get in touch with mary. we wish her the best, right? she's going to be talking to meredith vieira coming up on the "today" show this morning. so we can look for that and see how she is at this point in time. for now, we are live in hayward this morning, marla tellez for "today in the bay." some pretty violent pictures in the live pictures coming from egypt this morning. thank you. >> as we see that violence continuing and heating up from time to time, the white house is in a difficult spot this morning. the u.s. diplomats now have to call on a long-time allie to step down immediately. tracie potts is live in washington covering the very latest from there. >> reporter: good morning. they haven't used the words step down immediately, but what the white house has said is the time
6:53 am
for transition is now. not september when president mubarak says he won't run for re-election. in fact, this morning at the national prayer breakfast president obama talked about praying for the situation, the violence that's going on there and that egypt's government will heed the voices of those anti-government protestors that we are now seeing in some of these live pictures coming in from central cairo. again today, more violent crashes, not nearly to the degree of what we saw last night, but certainly a day where violence seems to be escalating. the prime minister has now issued an apology for the pro-mubarak supporters crashing into the square yesterday saying they will investigate and hold responsible anyone who was involved in the five deaths and more than 830 who were wounded. the opposition now saying there will be no talks. this is new this morning, no talks until mubarak steps down. and just within the last hour or so, we learned that the top
6:54 am
prosecutor in cairo has frozen the accounts of former foreign ministers and issued a travel ban so that they cannot get out of the country. bottom line, this whole situation seems to be escalating as more americans try to get out on what could be the last chartered planes out later today. >> thank you, tracie. >> we are still watching that situation ever evolving. we'll update you throughout the day. turning to business news, today is the first day you can preorder the verizon iphone. >> yes, scott mcgrew is here. you are not going? >> i'm sticking with the blackberry. if you are a verizon customer, you can do that today. the verizon website started g p our time. it has been going real well. this is for current verz verizon customers. if you are not a customer you have to wait until wednesday. either way, you don't get the phone until february 10th. so there you go. checking the verizon stock, it is up 8 cents, a quarter percent

to $6.23. a quiet day on wall street. we are watching cisco systems higher, but really mixed. we have fairly good news on weekly jobless claims. the dow industrial is down 14 points. laura, tomorrow we get the major job numbers. those are the ones out of the labor department as far as unemployment rates, et cetera, go. those are coming at 5:30 our time. we look forward to that. thank you very much. the glen family is waking up richer this morning thanks to the nbc show "minute to win it." "today in the bay's" bob redell is with them. bob, you are not asking them to buy you breakfast, right? >> reporter: no. maybe they can pay more my mortgage, we'll see. they are $500,000 richer. this is the glenn family. julie, collin, holly, drew, glenn and brad. congratulations. those were the kids who did the competition, which was kind of a
6:56 am
new thing for the tv show. if you haven't seen the show, it is basically household games to play with household items. brad, which was the hardest game you played? >> probably super coin. >> what was the october of that? >> you have a coin and there's a five-gallon jug 15 feet away. you have to pass the coin into the jug. >> reporter: were you able to pull it off? >> no. >> reporter: you did make history because you were only the second competitors to win the half million? >> that's correct. after the show they were able to show us a 10-year-old that was the first to compete in the super coin for the million dollars. and that we were the only kid family to ever be on the show and then to be able to compete for a million dollars. >> reporter: you got the half
6:57 am
million dollars quickly. what are you going to do with the money? or do the kids get to decide? >> we are going to college and have some spending money. >> buy a krunger crimper. >> reporter: that would be the first thing on my list, too. half a million dollars, not bad. >> i'm impressed. they are going to buy a couple cars and an ipad. >> they can buy more later. this morning the "today" show is coming up next. they are live in cairo with breaking news on the unrest there. of course, we'll have a local news update coming up in a half hour. have a great morning. thank you for joining us. california should be proud. we were the first to ban smoking on airplanes. the first to have smoke-free bars and restaurants.

all while saving over $86 billion in health care costs... and over a million lives. we've done a good job. but even if you were born today, you'd still grow up in a world where tobacco kills more people... than aids, drugs, alcohol, murder and car crashes... combined. we have a lot more work to do.
