new this morning, it happened again. oakland police radios fail during a critical incident. i'm christie smith. we'll tell you what happened coming up in a live report. today could be the last day for mubarak. a massive demonstration in cairo this morning as thousands prepare for another battle with supporters and egypt's president. and police lock down an east bay neighborhood, but an armed bank robbery suspect is still on the loose. how you can help police catch their man. congratulations, you have made it to friday. here's a live picture of oakland. it is february 4th. this is "today in the east bay."

good morning, everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. it is 4:30. we have a lot going on. let's check your east bay forecast with christina loren. good morning to you. today is a very important day because we are encouraging everyone to wear red. i want to get that out at the top of the show. it is very important to wear red today. we are all trying to bring awareness to heart disease. we'll talk more about that throughout the show. we have a big event happening in san jose today as well. 43 in hayward. 39 in concord. waking up in the east bay, livermore, 37 degrees. it is chilly out there. but the good news is we don't have fog developing in the east bay as of right now. as we head throughout the morning, we do expect some of the fog to develop along the coastline and to drift towards the east bay. count on some patches of dense fog on your way to work this morning. but right now visibility is looking good. the greatest news i can bring to

you on a friday is that this weekend will be absolutely beautiful. your complete forecast is on the way. we'll check in with mike to find out about your drive. obviously not a whole lot of cars on the road, but a truck had a problem on southbound 680 coming past scott creek road out of fremont into milpitas. there was a fire under the rig carrying the car. there's a lot of equipment on the side of the road there. three lanes are getting by. a smooth drive out of sunol and livermore. 580 has construction near airway and north livermore avenue. not a big deal, we see this almost every night. heading to sierra, beautiful weather. that's the eastbound route starting at 2:00 p.m. for a slowing. prepare for that. we have live pictures this morning of violent protests in egypt's major cities as well as gatherings of what are turning out to be millions of people,

each one of those dots is a person. it is amazing. this is european leaders arriving for the eu summit in bus zells. they are calling on egypt's government to begin what they are calling a national dialogue with protestors. that is the mild european union stopping short of what president obama called for in distancing himself from the egyptian president hosni mubarak. meantime, they are calling it a day of departure. they are talking about mubarak. as den chenman reports from liberation square in cairo in their bid to topple the regime. >> reporter: friday morning in cairo aeared appeared to be peace of peaceful. the calm scene here is not what has happened over the last two days. makeshift barricades and rocks

were thrown at mubarak supporters on the edge of the square. they accused government supporters of being thugs, police in civilian clothes. of all people who don't have any weapons facing off against those firing at them, and those people are not doing anything except demanding their rights. protestors claim the government is behind the violence and charged that the jinx president denies that. mubarak supporters remained around the square despite the curfew request. mubarak told an interview from abc news there would be, quote, chaos if he resigned right now. protestors do not want to wait and insist it is time for mubarak to go. dan shennaman, nbc news. meanwhile, closer to home radio communication problems continue to plague oakland's police department despite claims for mayor quan saying it was

solved. christie smith is live from oakland with more. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. happy friday. here we go again. it was less than two weeks ago when oakland police officers complained their radios failed them while trying to locate a shooting suspect who led them on a chase. the communications looked at it and thought it was fixed. turned out the radio system broke down twice now, wednesday and thursday morning of this week according to "the tribune." thursday morning officers were looking for three burglary suspects when the radios failed. those officers had to use hand signals and couldn't even get ahold of dispatch. then wednesday that happened. then thursday the narcotics operation radio went down. they couldn't get ahold of dispatch. earlier this week mayor quan said the city's i.t. department found out it was a timing mechanism problem but it was adjusted. a spokesperson for the city is

now trying to figure out these latest issues, whether they are trying to fix the old problem or perhaps something new. certainly, you have to be able to communicate in the field. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the east bay." this morning police are communicating there could be an armed and dangerous man hiding somewhere in the east bay. witnesses say the man in this photo pointed a gun at a bank teller as you can see in these rather clear surveillance pictures demanding cash. officers say he ran out of the bank with money then fled to oakland where 911 callers reported seeing him around 4:30 in the afternoon. now, oakland police shut down 41st street between gilbert and broadway and near oakland tech high school. they locked the campus down for 15 minutes while police searched for that man. as we mentioned, the suspect is still on the loose. also this morning, an east bay city says its crime rate is at a 50-year low.

pittsburgh police say people reported 2,213 serious crimes in 2010. that's a 40% drop from the year before. police say fbi statistics show last year's crime rate when adjusted for population is the lowest for any year since 1960. pittsburgh police say the number of robberies, homicides, and arsons went down in 2010 compared to 2009, but rapes, aggravated assaults and burglaries were up slightly from the year before. the feds say they will crackdown on east pot lovers and their backers if oakland goes through with a plan to license large scale marijuana farms. in a letter to the city attorney, the justice department warns it will not allow even city-approved pot farms to operate. the department of justice calls the plan a licensing scheme that allows behavior that is illegal in the eyes of federal law. in july oakland became the first

city in the country to approve licensing marijuana growth. this week the oakland city council decided to delay the vote on the revised measure that would tie pot farms to individual pot dispensaries. segway shoppers are suing the grocery chain for failing to contact club card customers about recalls. the lawsuit filed this week in alameda county says safeway should use member data to warn shoppers about recalled foods. it also demands that the company pay damages to customers who weren't refunded or credited for recalled items. in the news release the center for science and public interest that filed the lawsuit said, quote, safeway aggressively used the club card data to turn out coupons, analyze its customers' shopping habits, in other words, boost sales, yet when it knows it sold products that could be contaminated it does not use the robust marketing database to prevent illnesses or deaths.

safeway says it meets all legal requirements by posting recalls on its website. the change also says the cards are optional and people don't have to share their names and addresses to get to them. all right. we'll talk to christina about the fabulous weekend ahead. good morning. >> good morning to you. yes, it will be an absolutely beautiful weekend. we did have a little bit of rain last weekend, so this weekend get on outdoors. it will be beautiful. lots of sunshine. and temperatures much warmer than average. in fact, i think we'll be in record territory today, tomorrow, sunday and monday. we are down to about three-quarters of a mile in santa rosa. visibility is down in novato. we are expecting the fog to drift inland heading throughout the morning. watch out for fog on the bridges this morning. we'll keep you updated throughout the morning. that's the biggest difference between yesterday and today. if you are headed from the east bay to the coast, take it easy out there this morning. 37 degrees in livermore. 39 in concord. 43 degrees in hayward.

we are looking towards a repeat performance for today from what we saw yesterday. we are going to end up in the upper 60s to low 70s in the east bay. and temperatures are only going to climb as we get closer and closer to sunday. super bowl sunday, absolutely gorgeous in the east bay. 72 degrees is the forecasted high on sunday in oakland. 68 degrees in almaden valley. 70 degrees in los gatos. if you work in the south bay, that's where we are seeing the warmest conditions heading throughout the day today. your extended is on the way. stay tuned for that. we'll find out about the drive on a friday with mike. friday, friday. you are talking sunday, sunday. southbound 680 we have an activity going on there. the car carrier is still on the side of the road. the dumbarton bridge overnight construction did not take place, so all lanes are currently open. a smooth drive across highway 84 and 92. then near the bay bridge it is a

welcome back, everyone. it is 4:44 local time. just before 3:00 in the afternoon in cairo. you are looking at live pictures of what they are now calling liberation square, at least some of the protestors. thousands, perhaps millions of people in cairo, very peaceful. what happens next? this is going to be the big

question. do they march on the presidential palace? is this mubarak's last day in office? this morning a uc davis professor says she was beaten half to death by an angry pro-mubarak mob. the protestors ripped her and ripped her shirt as she supported the egyptian president. soldiers hauled her to safety inside a tank and took her to the hospital where she got stitches in her head. she is now back in the united states and will join state lawmaker daryl stineberg at a rally in sacramento this morning to call for an end to violence in egypt. well, from vallejo to basic training, two 18-year-old identical twins are getting ready for boot camp. the two came to the u.s. and enlisted in the army last month. this morning they will take the oath of enlistment in hayward and then it is off to south carolina on monday. here's the twist, the twins will

split up for the first time in their lives. melissa ventura venell is joining the reserves. her sister is joining the active duty forces. let's turn to christina loren wearing red as we all are. good morning. >> good morning. yes, today is national wear red day. we are trying to bring more awarness to heart disease, the number one killer of women. today we want to bring everybody -- we want to bring awareness to this cause. check online to find out tips to check for. we want all the women out there to be safe. that goes for the men, too, scott mcgrew. we have three-quarters to a mile of visibility in north bay. if you are heading out for work or leisure, be careful out there as you encounter dense patches of fog. 42 in san jose. hayward, 43. 39 in concord. so it is a little bit on the chilly side. still not as cold as we were at this time yesterday morning. and this afternoon is going to be beautiful once again.

yesterday we ended up in the low 70s to upper 60s across the bay area. more of the same today. 69 degrees in fairfield. 70 in oakland. 67 degrees in concord. lots of sunshine today. lots of sunshine continuing all the way throughout this weekend. in fact, owe you can't ask for better conditions on super bowl weekend. 72 degrees on sunday. temperatures staying warm as we kickoff next week. it always makes going to work a little easier when it is not so bitter cold out there. are there problems on the roadways if you are trying to go to work this morning? aside from your mind wandering about weekend activities, no. the cartinas and venetian bridges are clear this morning. the northbound direction is registering speeds near 50 miles per hour. i saw yellow chiclets earlier, but speeds are being restored. the fog could be an issue throughout the morning, but we'll follow that. if you are using the cartinas

and venetian bridges, mark my word, on friday light it will slow down below 30 very early, about 5:45 or so. southbound 680 we have the earlier truck activity on the shoulder with one lane blocked off. back to you. a national clothing store has led to better than expected fourth quarter earnings. the stores have been opened by a year and sales have jumped. analysts expected a .5% hike. total sales for the week ending on january 29th hit $441 million. the company says dresses and the juniors department sold particularly well. ross plans to repurchase 900 million of its own shares. in the latest hour we'll get

the latest on the unemployment crisis in america. the jobless rates could rise. we'll bring you that news as soon as it comes at 5:30. in the meantime, we'll get news before the bell and nicole lapin at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. futures are flat this morning as investors are in the wait and see mode before the big report out today. you said it, the january numbers are out at 8:30 in the morning. and economists expect a fourth straight month of gains in company payrolls. the concensis forecast is for an increase in 136,000 jobs, although the range is wide from 75,000 to 250,000. it is unclear how much of an impact the snowstorms had on hourly workers. if you didn't show up to work because of bad weather, you weren't counted in payroll data. stocks rose yesterday after fed chairman ben bernanke said the fed is committed to keeping interest rates low for the time

being. the dow was up 20 to 12,062. meanwhile, the trustee overseeing bernie madoff's bankruptcy case is looking at jpmorgan. executives were given blunt warnings that madoff was running a ponzi scheme, but the bank stayed quiet concerned more about protecting its own investment in madoff's funds. they are looking for $6.4 million from jpmorgan chase. the super bowl could be a big boom. despite the icy weather, the game could post records for sales of tickets and merchandise generating a bigger impact for north texas than any previous host. price water is predicting a 200,000 bunch of people to descend on the game to spend $202 million. scott, that tops $195 million spent in '07 in florida.

>> fair enough. looking forward to it. thank you, nicole. dog walkers, baby strollers and bicyclists, everyone has a story about some near miss accident on bay area walking trails. but is it time for the police to step in? "today in the east bay's" vicky nguyen looks at accidents on popular trails and what can be done about them. >> reporter: one minute she was on a leisurely stroll with her dog. >> i didn't see it coming. >> reporter: the next -- >> i heard from behind the biker yell, lookout. then i turned around. >> reporter: by then it was too late for george finch. the cyclist slammed into her and they both hit the pavement. george was shaken up and bruised. the biker flipped over the handlebars and damaged his bike. >> everyone is sharing one path, especially with kids and babies and dogs.

>> reporter: george's story is a familiar one on mixed use trails all over the bay area ch. it is not always the cyclist at fault. careless pedestrians need to tune in, too. >> some of the bikers are arrogant. and a lot of the walkers are arrogant also. >> reporter: over the past five years the district reported 136 bike-involved accidents on the 16 multi-use trails. los gatos had 29. east bay regional park district had 51 accidents, a quarter were collision. golden gate national recreation area only provided one year's worth of data. 33 accidents in 2010. most involved cyclists riding faster than the 15 miles an hour speed limit. this officer patrols los gatos trail. >> if there were a bunch of kids on the trail as stuff, i would

expect you to slow down to 7 or 8 miles an hour. >> reporter: up to 5,000 people share this space on a weekend. >> hey, guys. i these to talk to you real quick. >> reporter: most have no idea the bike limit is 15 miles per hour. and slower when cyclists are passing play areas or pedestrians. while walkers and slow traffic should keep to the right, they have the right of way no matter what. >> when you came across that bridge, i would expect you to come out at 9 or so, maybe 8. >> reporter: the fact that he's clocked the cyclist at 47 miles an hour, it was an automatic $200 ticket. >> there isn't anywhere you should go 47 miles an hour on a bike. >> reporter: while the most conflict comes from bikers versus walkers, the worst injuries involved bikers themselves. a cyclist died after crashing head-first into the pavement at the almaden county park. he was wearing a helmet. >> the head trauma can be fatal,

athletic sock. >> no cozies. >> all right. people were talking about that yesterday on tv. i'm thinking, please, no. >> absolutely not. high-tech all the way. well, the biggest game of the weekend and in all of football continues to gear up deep in the heart of texas. the packers and steelers will square off in the super bowl on sunday. this morning starts what we figure will be a super weekend in north texas. super exciting for the 120,000 fans expected in and around the stadium. super expensive for those still looking for a ticket. the going rate is more than $2,500. and for police, extra pressure to make sure things are super safe. >> we are constantly monitoring the environment around the stadium and all over north texas for any potential threats or any perceived threats. we are prepared. >> the nfl has hired 3,000 private security officers in addition to the force of local and federal agents in the area.

christina lorn loren is joining us. do you have a team you are reporting for? >> i always like to go for the most handsome quarterback in the super bowl. this year it is aaron rodgers. boy, that guy can throw. i would like to see the raiders in the super bowl next year. good morning to you. we have three-quarters a mile in santa rosa right now. if you are headed to the north bay, take it easy. a little bit of fog is expected to drift along the peninsula heading throughout the morning. this is what's happening. we have the offshore flow with clouds pushing offshore, but at the seem time it is starting to really weaken with the onshore flow take position. we'll see a little coastal fog. i don't think we have a strong enough onshore flow to see the fog drift toward the east bay. we'll keep our eye on that for you. it looks relatively clear this morning. 39 degrees in concord. 34 in fairfield.
