people are scrambling for places to stay because their homes are now unlivable. now pg&e neighbors are wondering where the next blaze might break out. >> i have seen this before about 20 years ago and it brings a lot of that back. it's scary, you can go to sleep at night and not wonder if one of your neighbors or your own place is going to be going up. >> police have stepped up patrols in the area and arson investigators are searching for clues and asking residents to report anything suspicious. one powerful tug of war with bass continuing on as chief. he says it's time to get back to work. the chief will start with the department's radio system which has been troubled for years. >> reporter: oakland radio communication systems a big problem here in the city of oakland.

the police chief says it's a problem that needs to be dealt with, he says lives are at stake. six officers, a paramedic, responding to a man shot and wounded on brush and west grand in oakland, a new police procedure, officers are working in pairs because of a persistent problem with the police radio system. >> i want to make sure that officers can back each other up and we have an area that's gone to two-person units. >> reporter: recently making that adjustment to assure officer safety. last wednesday police were unable to talk to one another during a high-speed chase that resulted in an officer involved shooting in east oakland and there were more radio problem this is week. >> this is a big city and the communications systems have a huge number of components. >> reporter: radio communication problems are nothing new to oakland. with so many problems including broken down cars, equipment and not enough officers.

new millennium ♪ >> reporter: the magic of the giants world series victory has noah griffin singing. you can bet this lifelong giant fans will be part of fan fest on saturday. it seems like the entire bay area showed up for the giants victory parade. with thousands of fans still excited about the best team in baseball, the fans are turning out for the largest fan fest ever. >> we're anticipating it could be double, 40,000 people, 50,000 people, we just don't know. and obviously we can handle 41,000 plus because we did that throughout the playoffs, we do that for many of our games. >> for the first time at fan fest, the field will be open and that should give people some room to move. it's a free event where players sign autographs and talk baseball. this year the world series trophy will be on display. >> i'm so excited. >> harold and janice stopped by

good morning to you. take a live look at the bay bridge. can you believe that's going to be gone in a couple of years? let's check your weekend forecast which you will probably be pleased with. it sounds very nice. >> temperature-wise, chris, looking outstanding, we just saw san francisco that will be the site of fan fest later on today. and we do have -- but the winds, now that's going to be something we have to watch. north wind at 6 in napa. we'll see these gusty winds that are already on our hill tops of the you can see some upper 30s afternoon the north bay, around novato heading up near napa and fairfield. 43 current in san jose and 50 degrees around san francisco. there will be warm temperatures

in the next couple of afternoons, 70s possible in the south bay heading down towards santa cruz and those gusty winds that will be kicking up on our hill tops. wind advisories already issued for the hill tops not north bay. we could get some gusts close to 45 miles an hour as we head into tonight. you may also notice those high clouds that are sitting out there this morning. high pressure is still holding it's ground, storm also steer off to the north and thanks to a weather system that's diving down east of the sierra, you're going to start to see the winds picking up. gusty on our hill top locations, but otherwise pretty nice. tomorrow a little bit warmer and really no sign of any rain in the forecast. high pressure is going to hold its ground over most of the west coast. we'll see some rain heading in from time to time, but dry weather now really through friday, but by late next weekend, we could see a chance

of rain in the forecast. if you're heading up to the sierra, no chance for rain, but gusty winds, we could see some wind gusts getting above 50 miles an hour. but the temperature is looking a lot more like spring with those highs out towards the weekend. you can see our temperatures near 70 degrees in san jose, so pretty warm today, i think tomorrow is going to be a little bit warmer as those winds kind of turn a little bit warmer offshore. and to the north bay, look at those numbers, lakeport and ukiah, climbing into the 70s for the afternoon. so your seven-day forecast shows unusually warm temperatures for the bay area to wrap up this weekend and then we'll see cooling and possibly a chance of some showers coming in later next weekend. perfect for fan fest today, but look out for those gusty winds. an injured sea turtle fitted with a radio transmitter two years ago owes his life to that

technology. scientists tracking that turtle showed that he was breathing too sloetly. he had shotgun pellets in his neck, but sea world's staff says he's doing great. >> gradually as he was regaining strength and warming up a little bit, we give him half an hour of day swim time in the pool. once he was able to do that which was just yesterday, he spent half a day in the pool and he started eating for the first time on his own. >> veterinarians are calling his patient bruce because of the bruising he displayed. he will be able to return to the wild by late spring or early summer. super bowl is about 24 hours away still, but already one commercial is a fan favorite. maybe you have seen it. this volkswagen commercial features a tiny darth vader trying to move items using the force. that pint-sized sensation is

up for the afternoon. we got 50 right now in san franciscas we look at the winds there from san bruno mountain, you can see the camera bouncing around a little bit. a late start starting at 4:00 p.m. today for elevations genera ly above 1,000 feet. you saw the high clouds there and that live picture around san francisco, no rain today, cool start to your morning, but a pretty pleasant finish except for those gusty winds, highs today in the 60s and 70s tomorrow and we get even warmer in a few spots around the bay area. >> by the way, happy weather person's day. >> thank you. this afternoon in san francisco, supporters of egypt will rally at u.n. plaza. meanwhile in cairo protests are already gathered and that rally is mostly peaceful this morning. the egyptian military is trying to get protesters to remove

barriers. it will not use force against the demonstrators. they say they will not leave until president hosni mubarak steps down. meanwhile protesters are keeping the peace among themselves. one group stopped a robbery attempt at the country's nay mouse egyptian museum. they recovered two artifacts stolen from the museum and returned them to the egyptian army. the well could go dry for a popular bar in emeryville this after a massive brawl overnight. nearly 200 people spilled into the streets outside the kiddy bar. emmiville pd showed up to find the giant crowd fighting and called for a backup from three other agencies and it took more than 30 officers to stop the

melee. three officers were assaulted. emmiville's police chief is talking about having the -- while the grim reality sets in that 4-year-old juliani cardenas was in fact the body pulled from the canal this weekend, there's other questions. why were there so many cars pulled from those murky waters. >> the delta mendota canal is -- the people of tracey rely on the canal for drinking water and thousands of farmers use it to keep their crops alive. all facts you may not have known about the canal. though one fact we do know. we learn from watching tv these past weeks. >> so far they have pulled out

nine cars. >> the canal is a dumping ground for cars. as divers searched for the vehicle they thought would contain juliani cardenas, they pulled up car after truck after car, 17 in all. as a number that surprised many people but not local cops. >> no, not really. >> eric parsons is with chp, he says access is wide open along the length of the canal, no fences, no barriers and nothing to stop cars from driving to it or being dumped in it. >> our task force is aware of it and they try to keep an eye on it but there's so much access. >> the canal runs right through an area with some of the highest car thefts in it country. three of the nation's top then cities for car theft are within

90 miles away. so just how many cars are there under the surface? >> on a yearly basis, they pull between 50 and 75 cars out. >> pete losaro is with the u.s. bureau of reclamation. he says a tow truck company regularly drags the canal looking for cars. but the current is normally too strong to pull cars out. only when the water level is dropped as it was during the search can they get in there u reaching cars. some of which have been down there for years. which does raise the question of pollution. the water delivered to farmers is not filtered and the oil and gas from those cars does end up on crops. is it anything we should be worried about? >> it's a kind of a saying in

the field where delusion is the solution to pollution. i would say that while we're using essentially raw water from the reservoir to feed the crops, there's such a small, small percentage of pollutants within that water based upon the testing that we have done. >> while that may be a solution to the pollution, no one seems to have any idea how they'll keep cars out of this canal in the future. >> and that was garvin thomas reporting. while the water that is used in agriculture is not filtered, the 5% of the canal water that does end up as drinking water used in tracey is filtered. the crews did canal maintenance about ten years ago or so. they drained all of the water and they discovered 200 cars. every week there seems to be a new list. this morning the not so golden state california is home to eight of the 20 worst places to

both parties because before we are democrats or republicans, we are americans. >> okay, also today, no injuries or deaths in an explosion in northwestern montana. fortunately no one was home when ann explosion destroyed a house in this neighborhood in montana. firms say that the force of the explosion levelled the house early friday morning. neighbors over a mile away say they heard the blast that sent debris from that home to surrounding trees. the cause of the blaze remains under investigation. the firefighters say it appears to be some sort of gas explosion. crews are still in cleanup mode as a cyclone ripped through down under. winds of up to 170 miles an hour. more than seven inches of rain fell within a few hours in melbourne and wind gusts of up to 80 miles an hour knocked down trees. australia's state emergency

take a live look, it is a breezy start to your saturday morning. so hold your hat as you head out to giants fan fest. and the forecast is also very warm as well? >> it does feel like spring training even around the bay area. a little bit cool, but by the afternoon, we're talking 60s to even low 70s outside. right now san jose not so windy, 43 degrees, as we show you oakland, you can see some hazy skies as well. 43 as well. some wind back over to san francisco. the camera at that elevation bouncing around from some of those winds, 50 degrees in san francisco, up our way to highs that should reach to mid 60s for the afternoon. the item to watch, for our hill tops, the gusty winds starting up right around mid afternoon, this is going to be a wind advisory for mainly elevations above 1,000 feet that should take us into tomorrow morning with those gusty conditions.

mostly 40s outside, turning breezy through the day, look at those temperatures, 60s and 70s for highs. you also might notice we have high clouds drifting on through, not much fog out there this morning. high pressure is holding its ground, so not only will we see windy conditions on the east side of the seierra, we will start to see temperatures running ten or 15 degrees above where they should be for this time of year, so we're talking mid 60s and low 70s for the weekend and the long-term path for these storms through at least thursday and friday will continue to steer on off to the north so we'll see dry conditions probably through the better part of next week. gusty winds as well, especially in the ridge tops, gusties getting up 50 miles an hour, those temperatures looking pretty outstanding, we'll call it early strong sunshine, a nice
