again, this is a long streak of what appears to be arson fires in the castro. meanwhile, here's a look at three suspects wanted in a string of attempted kidnappings. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in milpitas with that. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. these attempted kidnappings have all taken place within roughly a week of kalaveras high school. the most recent being a 17-year-old student on her way to class last week. this right now is a sketch that police have come up with based on her description of her assailant. the suspect is hispanic, about 20 to 30 years old. he happened upon her as she walked to school around 8:30 la wednesday morning. he said something in spanish and started following her. so she got on the phone with hed mom and was very upset. he began chasing her, trying to grab her, but she was able to get to campus t notify the

school's resource officer. a couple weeks ago, here's another sketch, this man, a different man, tried to abduct a 13-year-old and 17-year-old girl within an hour of each other. this taking place about a mile from the school. apparently he exposed himself to both girls and tried to get them to go into his car with him. the girls describe him as a 30 to 35-year-old asian man believed to be driving a red chevy blazer. unknown on what year the car is, but apparently the paint is peeling. bob redell for "today in the bay." the preliminary hearing is expected to happen today for the man who tracked down and attacked his childhood priest for allegedly molesting him as a child roughly 40 years ago. 43-year-old will lynch is facing assault charges. he's accused of pummeling his former priest at the retirement home at the end of may. prosecutors cannot charge the priest for sexual abuse because he reported it after the statue

of limitations ran out. most want the time limits to be e limb namt eliminated altogether as 24 other states have done. the city accusing club wet staffers of covering violence on the dance floor. on new year's eve the staff refused to call an ambulance for a woman bleeding after a fight. in another case police reportedly found club staff cleaning up blood after a fight where someone was allegedly stabbed. this morning family and friends of an east bay man are mourning his death. he collapsed at the finish line and died at the keizer permanente marathon in san francisco. you. you just don't expect something like this. the 36-year-old man was about to wrap up a half marathon when witnesses say he collapsed never near the finish line. they expected emergency personnel to be there immediately to help him, but they say what happened is they had to give him cpr along with race volunteers. we have video of that runner peter hass being interviewed from 2009 talking about his company pet sport usa, a wholesale pet supply store. the keizer permanente half marathon has a 13.1-mile course. it was run sunday. and it winded through golden gate park with about 10,000 runners. published reports say that five race volunteers started giving him cpr before medical personnel recalled were called in. a runner told nbc bay area news that hass received cpr for 15 minutes with no emergency

responders on the scene to help him. "the chronicle" is reporting that a fire dispatcher said they were actually given three different locations for the incident. the cause of death has not been determined yet. and an autopsy is set for some time this week. reporting live on treasure island, christie smith, "today in the bay." thank you very much. >> the trial of uc berkeley grads continues in iran today. iran accused shane bauer, josh fattal and sarah shourd of spying. shourd is in the u.s. released on half a million bail for health reasons. all three pleaded not guilty. the hearing is closed to the press and public. the hikers' attorney says the two men appeared well when in court yesterday. protests continue in egypt this morning. and the u.s. says the transition people are fighting for is underway. egypt's government sat down with opposition groups and made a lot of promises, but they avoided the one non-negotiable demand,

that president hosni mubarak step down immediately. >> he is an egyptian with the right to live in egypt, but he has to cease power. >> however, the egyptian government will take its hands off the internet and media and protestors. and it will end martial law. add least one of the promises is reportedly still happening. al-jazeera says the military is still detaining some of its reporters. one claims he was held most of sunday. a second reporter says he was detained at a check point for about an hour yesterday. the u.s. embassy says it has raised the issue with the egyptian government and will keep doing so. a google executive missing in egypt for two weeks will be released from government custody in the next few minutes according to family members. hala gorani is the head of google in south africa. he created the facebook page

that first called for the january 25th protest. that seemed to be the spark for the current uprising. it is believed the egyptian government is holding him, and again, he could be released very, very soon. and the woman who spent days trapped in her cairo apartment is in new york city this morning. 76-year-old mary thornberry's plane landed at jfk last night. her son was there waiting for her. thornberry lived right off the main square in cairo during the heart of the protest. she fended off rioters with a rolling pin and a knife. thornberry was rescued from her apartment friday night. she says she does not want to say who helped her get out of there. you can hear from thornberry next on the "today" show. the transportation security administration is looking at a security breach at sfo. the tsa says someone made it into an unauthorized area at the terminal in terminal three around 1:30 yesterday afternoon.

the tsa did not close the terminal and no more information is available this morning, but we'll tell you more as soon as we find out more. just about 6:07 now. what a gorgeous weekend. >> it was fabulous. i went to the alamita antique fair on friday. and i went out to fanfest on saturday. >> how was the fanfest? >> 50,000 people showed up. it was amazing. >> perfect weather. a good weekend. especially if you are someone that likes to get outside at halftime. it was gorgeous. i saw a lot of people out with tank tops and flip-flops on. you saw a guy without a shirt on a bike over the weekend. an unusual sight for february, early february, nonetheless. today we'll see a little bit of a change. a little more of an onshore flow meaning some coastal fog will develop heading throughout the next couple of hours. right now we are looking clear along the peninsula. just a little hazy.

heading through tomorrow morning the onshore flow will kick in. we'll count on more of the patchy fog at the coast pushing inland. but for today high pressure is still going to be the dominant feature. it will keep a little bit of the cloud cover from making its way into the bay area, but some of it will push through heading throughout the day today. we'll call it increasing clouds for the second half of the day. the temperatures are pretty mild right now. 56 degrees in san francisco. 51 in san mateo. they are going to mean temperatures will approach the 70-degree mark once again by noon. we are already at 62 degrees in oakland. 67 in sunnyvale. and 67 degrees in san jose. what you will notice from your contour map is green at the coast. that's the marine influence pushing in. so coastal areas not quite as warm as places in the south bay today. 70 degrees in los gatos. 71 in santa cruz. 69 degrees in redwood city. showers make their way into the bay area towards the end of this weekend. i'm going to say late saturday into sunday. maybe a quarter of an inch of precipitation. the best chance to see the showers will be up in the north bay. we'll find out how your drive is

shaping up on a monday morning with mike inouye. good morning, christina. well, no rain on the roads, obviously. not until later in the forecast, but we have a ladder on the record still there on westbound 580 near north flint road. we first saw slowdowns approaching the area. we still see it slowing but it smoothed out quite a bit. we also see slowing past livermore. there's no traffic break scheduled. my suspicion is it is a 17-minute drive through the altamonte pass. highway 4 itself, you can't bypass this, it is a slowdown to love ridge. a nice drive here at the bay bridge toll plaza. a light volume on the approach for the freeways approaching the maze. a smooth drive here. it could change in the next 25 hours as a lot of folks decide to meet there. 6:09.

it is going to be another great day. temperatures are going down. we'll check with christina in a bit. we could learn today later what made about 50 bay area students and teachers sick at a marin camp. they were staying at a ranch for a five-day educational trip. five students reported feeling ill after a hike wednesday night. 50 students were sent home with family members or guardians. tests on the water at the camp came back clean. investigators are now turning their attention to food at the camp. oakland may lose its popular aquatic center along jack london square's waterfront. for now the nonprofit group managing it is turning it over to the city to operate. the jack london aquatic center is the go-to facility for sailing, canoeing and et cetera on the estuary. if it shuts down people will have no place to put their boat.

city leaders are working to keep it open. if funding can't be found it will close at the end of the month. same face, new location. facebook may be ready for a new home. the palo alto social networking giant reportedly asked reporters to go to the new campus. facebook doubled its workforce in two years. aol is purchasing "the huffington post" for $315. the buyout will bring an additional $25 million daily visitors to the aol properties. if the deal is approved it will put arianna huffington in charge of all aol content. now aol's chief tim armstrong says 2011 is a comeback year for the internet company as it continues to reinvent itself to boost sluggish advertising

sales. wikileaks founder julian assange was in court this morning to fight his extradition to sweden. swedish prosecutors want to question him about allegations of sexual misconduct by two women he met in stoke oklahoma last year. the defense lawyers this morning argued swedish secrecy and assange's profile could lead to an unfair trial. they say she shouldn't be extradited because he hasn't been charged with a crime. if he is extradited it could make it easier forrist officials to demand his arrest for releasing thousands of classified diplomatic documents. two men are facing murder charges for a shooting at an ohio that fernty house. one person is dead, 11 wounded from the shooting at an off campus house at youngstown university. the suspects are 19 and 22 years old. the men left the party at the house after an argument and then came back and started shooting.

a universal flu vaccine was tested successfully by british scientists. oxford scientists developed that new vaccine working against all known flu strains by targeting two major proteins found inside the flu virus. it is different from traditional external vaccine that is stimulating our system to produce antibodies to fight the flu. this vaccine promotes production of cell that is hunt down and kill infected cells. once refined the vaccine may prevent outbreaks of swine flu as well. 6:16 now. former cal quarterback aaron rodgers is the toast of the nfl this morning. >> chico native to lead the green bay packers to win the super bowl. the packers beat the stealer steelers. >> congratulations to him. the super bowl will be remembered for the things that went wrong than the packers big

good morning to you. it was a beautiful day yesterday. i think that's what everybody is really going to be talking about today. how nice it was, unprecedented temperatures for this time of the year. 79 degrees in san rafael yesterday. 80 in napa. 77 in san jose. and 72 degrees in san francisco. record territory once again today. not quite as warm, though. we'll drop by about 5 to 10 degrees. we have a little trough of low pressure that's going to inch its way into the bay area. as it does so, take a look at what's happening here. you can see showers falling apart. it is colliding with the big ridge of high pressure that kept us so nice and warm. beautiful weather over the weekend. a little bit of a change today. we'll see more clouds. and you'll see this front coming in as you head to the north this morning if you are headed that way to work. mild conditions persist for today. as you take your lunch break, we are in the mid-60s. rounding out the day at 70 in los gatos. showers in the forecast. we'll let you know when and how much rain we are expecting coming up. we'll find out about the drive now with mike inouye.

good morning, christina. we are getting a little more crowded out there. we'll let you know about things popping up here. the south bay, we have an accident reported at north 880 at the great mall coming up through milpitas. the concern is at the on-ramp. this is still an issue, but only for folks getting onto the freeway out of milpitas. there you go. we are looking at 87 coming through downtown. starting today through the 13th we have a tennis tournament in downtown. a little slowing approaching the northbound lane. it will sort itself out, but i'll keep my eyes on this for the south bay. then the lower bay shore, no major issues. i was going to call it at that until i saw this slowing show up a couple minutes ago. both directions for 101 as well as 280 right around 92. likely just more folks hitting the interchange, but i'll follow that to let you know if it works out. we have another issue further north on 101. the golden gate bridge has fog creeping in from time to time. you can see the lights glow more. we'll see that over the next couple of hours.

toledo at norfolk southern freight trains grained to a halt causing 60 of the cars to derail. upon impact chemical transport cars filled with more than 30,000 gallons of ethanol, sparked a mini firestorm lasting more than 14 hours. the fire was so fierce about 20 surrounding homes were evacuated. the epa is monitoring the air quality and surprisingly no one was hurt by this encounter. coming up, we'll have much more for you after the break. it is 6:27. stay with us.

we broke 24 temperature records over the weekend. as you take your lunch break today, we are already going to be above our average high for this time of the year. 67 degrees at noon in san jose. 67 in livermore. we'll let you know what the high is expected to be in your city today coming up. back to you, marla. thank you, christina. a runner collapses at the finish line of a half marathon. emergency crews are nowhere to be found. bystanders and fellow racers try to revive him, but the husband and father dies on the scene. christie smith is live with the latest. >> reporter: witnesses describe a slow and confused response after the runner collapsed near the finish line. they say the announcer made a call on the loud speaker but it took some time for emergency crews to get there. and in the meantime it was runners and race volunteers who jumped in and gave cpr to the man.

now we do have video of him this morning. he is 36-year-old peter hass of arinda. he talked about his company pet store usa. he took on a 13.1-mile run yesterday. he contacted nbc talking about the lag time saying from the time he collapsed to when the ambulance arrived was a half hour. one person said thement ambulance was unable to find the finish line. the cause of death is still unknown, but an autopsy is expected some time this week. reporting live on treasure island, christie smith for "today in the bay." a woman who disappeared in oakland has turned up in a hospital. oakland police are still looking for two men who allegedly kidnapped her. >> witnesses say they saw a man

chasing the woman saturday night in oakland and then cornered her inside an apartment complex. the two men allegedly put her in a car and drove off. it happened on ilene street near san pablo avenue around 8:00. the car is a '99 black chrysler with four doors. these men are still on the loose. the license plate is 6jfg056. police in richmond this morning are still looking for two home invasion robbers who broke into a home hurting the man who lives there and making off with his car. police say the men were wearing ski masks when they forced their way into the home in the 2200 block of bristol cone drive around 7:00 yesterday morning. the suspect hit the man over the head then drove off in the man's green 1995 chevrolet silverado pickup. the victim was taken to a local hospital and treated for a minor head injury. if you have any information you are asked to call richmond

police at 510-620-6647. the federal health care law, the new one, may be taking a bite out of workers paychecks. a california law taxes the prem yums that employers pay to provide health care coverage to their workers non-dependent children. the current health care law allows parents to enroll children up to 26 into their health plans. some sacramento lawmaker are looking to except those dependents from being taxed. they could lose millions if the tax passes. a new study shows when young kids avoid processed foods their adhd symptoms diminish. the study followed 100 children with adhd between the ages of 4 and 8. for five weeks half of those children ate foods containing no processed foods. the other half followed a diet that included half those foods. 78% of the children who ate no

processed foods showed reduced symptoms. it is important to note the study only pertains to young children with adhd, not children who have add, that's without the hyperactive component. starting a baby on solid foods too early could increase obesity. a harvard university researcher found among formula-fed babies those introduced to solids before four months old were six times more likely to be obese by age three. no such link among babies who were breast fed for at least four months. the american economy of pediatrics recommends waiting on solid food until infants are between four and six months old. bounce houses could be bounced out of walnut creek. the reason is budget cuts. that's upsetting local parents. the city is proposing to do away with allowing the popular children's party inflatables in city parks. the city leaders say not only do they cause problems for city lawns but they tie up staff

finally some weather to talk about. look at what's making its way over san francisco overlooking candlestick point. a gorgeous sunrise is shaping up. of course, we are facing the south. looking to the north you can see the clouds coming in as part of a front to change our weather pattern around substantially as we head into tomorrow. not so much today. just count on increasing clouds heading throughout this afternoon. and more of an onshore flow tonight. we don't have any coastal fog, but we expect some to develop heading through this evening and especially tomorrow morning. the onshore flow is shaping up as part of this little front. it is not really going to make its way through the bay area because it is colliding with the big system of high pressure, but what will happen is we'll see a little bit of the marine influence impacting the temperatures at the coast, immediate coast, in particular. san francisco, much cooler today than 72 degrees yesterday at the

airport. 56 right now. 49 in oakland. and you're at 49 in san jose. we actually broke a total of 24 temperature records over the course of the weekend. it was a gorgeous february weekend around here. and oakland, they hit 82 degrees, making it the warmest day in february ever on record in oakland. so temperatures are going to come down substantially today. even more so for tomorrow. we'll drop ten degrees today. then ten for tomorrow. 64 degrees in oakland as you take your lunch break rounding out the day at 70 degrees. here's a look at the extended outlook. i promised you showers. this is what we are expecting late saturday into sunday. maybe a quarter of an inch of precipitation. we'll take what we can get. it will be dry in the air quality. we'll find out how you are doing on the roadways with mike inouye. good morning, christina. we do need the rain, but right now we need a nice, smooth commute. it is slow in many spots. let me show you what we have in the city. first of all, an earlier fire on the map here.

clayton is closed as you head over to twin peaks because of the investigation. it is the fourth fire in four days. and we have a tv series filming here near this area. take lumbard around it. the backup near the 880 overcrossing here because of the metering lights turned on. it is still smooth off the maze. look at the map coming off the berkeley curve. it is very slow there. an accident heading to the venetian bridge is causing some slowing. it has cleared now. typical slowing through antioch and livermore. back to you guys. 6:36 right now. michael jackson's personal physician won't be in court today but his lawyers will be to discuss the involuntary manslaughter case. >> a judge could decide whether the case will be televised and whether jurors will have to fill out a questionnaire before facing inquiry in court.

dr. conrad murray pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter. he's accused of giving the king of pop a lethal dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol along with other settives. jackson was 50 when he died in june of 2009. murray's trial begins march 28th. bank of america will pay $the 410 million to settle a lawsuit after it was accused of charging customers with excessive overdraft fees. in 2 the complaint b of a routinely processed debit transactions from biggest to smallest instead of in chronological order. now, as a result, the account balances dropped faster so that allowed the bank to then start charging overdraft fees. b of a has already changed many of its practices including eliminating fees for debit transactions. people in san mateo should be cautious when picking up the phone today. telephone scammers have conned a handful of elderly residents

into wiring money abroad. suspects have pretended to be grandchildren in need of money. a public defender, even a lottery official. the victim of at lottery scam completed eight transfers and received no winnings. they are warning people to hang up immediately on these phone calls and to report the incidents to police. a 36-year-old husband and father is dead this morning. and now the people in charge of running a popular half marathon in san francisco are facing serious questions about emergency readiness. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live on treasure island with more on this tragic story. christie? >> reporter: good morning to you. right after the runner collapsed witnesses describe a scene of confusion and delay. they say rather than seeing the first responders on scene immediately that it was fellow runners and race volunteers who administered cpr for quite some time. now the man who collapsed and

died is 36-year-old peter hass. we do have video of him this morning that was taken in 2009 when he was being interviewed. he was talking about his company pet for usa, a wholesale pet store. he was running in the keizer permanente half marathon in san francisco this weekend. 13.1 miles through golden gate park. one witness told nbc bay area news that from the time he collapsed, he was receiving cpr for 15 minutes, but still there were no emergency responders there right away. now, published reports say that fire dispatchers were given three different locations for the incident. so far no cause of death has been released, but an autopsy is set for some time this week. reporting live on treasure island, christie smith, "today in the bay." two wildfires blazing across australia have claimed 4,000 acres of land and at least 59

homes so far. the fires have been scorching the area since saturday. one of the fires was started when a power tool spark ignited dry grass. the other fire started when a tree branch was blown down by strong winds hitting an electrical infrastructure. hundreds of residents have been evacuated as the fires threaten neighborhoods. several people have been treated for smoke inhalation and one firefighter was hurt while fighting the flames. relative calm in cairo this morning. tenuous at best because egyptian president hosni mubarak refuses to step down immediately. interfering with the media, the protests and the internet to lift emergency law and also to investigate corruption and open up presidential elections. but as we see in these live pictures and hear this morning, they are still not satisfied. they insist that president hosni mubarak step down. no indication at all that he will do that, but the protestors are not leaving. this is non-negotiable. why they are making progress on that issue they still seem to be at a standstill. that's where we are today. secretary of state hillary clinton has said maybe it is not such a good idea that he step down immediately because there's no transition plan in place yet. there's no transition or coalition government in place. and if he were to resign today they would have 60 days to pull together an election. would it be considered legitimate? lots of things still up in the air as we watch the live pictures today of more protestors and more civil unrest in egypt.

scott? ominous signs surrounding the trial of three uc berkeley grads accused of spying in iran. the judge presiding over the case was the same judge that oversought the mass trials of protestors in disputed 2009 elections. he's a hard-liner known for handing down harsh sentences. now over the weekend the three pleaded not guilty to trespassing and espionage. two of the hikers shane bauer, josh fattal, were present in court. the third, sarah shourd, with us released earlier on a half million bail. she was summoned back to court but entered her plea despite not being there. the trial will continue for at least one more session. as rumored for months facebook may be ready for a new home. the palo all thoe social networking giant invited reporters to an event tomorrow morning at city hall in menlo park. speculation is facebook is moving to the former sun

microsystems area in menlo park. they have grown from 1,000 employees to 2,000 now since 2009. silicon valley will boost the bay area economy creating thousands of jobs. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in san jose with more. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. the bay area council is the group that represents local businesses. it is trying to get the world expo here to silicon valley in 2020. the idea being that moffett field over there in mountain view will be the host for the extravel began. one major hurdle is how to fund it, the money. the council estimates it will cost a billion dollars to hold the world's fair with improvements to roads and infrastructure necessary up and down the peninsula where moffett field is located. in return the council predicts the bay area would rap

tremendous rewards with 25 million viz tors over the six-month period. almost $6 million in tax revenue. a half billion in tax, i'm sorry, $6 billion in economic impact. a half billion in tax revenue. and 42,000 new jobs. now the council was inspired to put this bid together after they saw what shanghai did with the world expo last year in 2010. the final bid for 2020 is due at the end of next year. the selection would be made then at the beginning of 2013. reporting live here in milpitas, bob redell, "today in the bay." 6:54 right now. >> is it february? >> it is going to start feeling like it, right? >> yeah, really. not today, but yes, heading deeper into the week it will start to feel more seasonable for this time of the year. 83 degrees and warm in august in santa rosa. 80 degrees in napa. 77 degrees in san jose. and 72 degrees yesterday. this is in san francisco at the airport. we actually have reports of the

city being 80 degrees yesterday. unprecedented. we broke a temperature record for the month of february. oakland has never been that warm ever on record. so definitely one of the record-shattering days yesterday. today i think we'll break a couple records. definitely not as many as yesterday, but the cooling trend really kicks in heading into tomorrow. 70 today. down to 50 tomorrow. 49 degrees in oakland. turning over to 64 at noon. you'll be peeling off the first layer then. temperatures will round out in the 70s. it's the last unseasonably day with temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above the seasonal averages. if you haven't had a chance to enjoy it, go out there to do so today as temperatures start to drop off significantly by tomorrow. you will notice increasing clouds throughout the day, especially to this afternoon. the onshore flow at the coast is seeing 66 degrees. we'll jump to 69 on friday, but

then showers arrive into the weekend. we need the rain. hopefully the quarter inch we are expecting between saturday night and sunday will arrive. we'll find out what's happening right now. maybe you have to arrive to work today. that's right. a heads-up for folks as more folks hit the road. make sure you are prepared with a nice view of the city heading over from the east bay. a smooth drive across the bridge. we do have a backup at the toll plaza. we have a backup through livermore westbound. 28 minutes out of the altamonte pass. really slow through the heart of livermore. then suddenly clear by the time you get to the dublin interchange. a new incident just reported there southbound 680 at eastbound 580. that's opposite most commuters, but it could be a distraction with flashing lights. that's why we are seeing the slowdown there. pretty unusual time for that to show up. through sunol we have speeds in the 50s, but right here the live shot did show for just a few minutes almost a complete stop there. and a new accident reported south of the sunol grade heading into fremont near mission boulevard. that could have been the
