start to your day. good morning, everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. it is 4:30678. 4:30. we'll check your east bay forecast with christina loren. scott mcgrew, you always look better on a friday morning. >> i'm a little blue today. >> well, you'll feel sunny later on. a lot of vitamin d for today. a little more cloud cover than we saw yesterday, but it is cold out there. grab the jacket. as we head through next week, a whole other weather story. a wet pattern every day next week. we are expecting rain showers. we'll talk about that as the pineapple express shapes up to bring us a lot of moisture next week. today you are looking good with your forecast on the way. we'll check your road conditions in the east bay with mike inouye. good morning to you, mike.

we'll take you to the maps if we can. so far the overview friday light flow of traffic is expected throughout most of the morning commute. it will build up midday. we have the slow down in antioch at 5:30. we are watching for that. southbound 680 in your construction zone there is an accident in the middle lane, but no major slowing because of the light volume of traffic except for right at the scene. we'll follow this down to the dublin interchange. the highway 24 interchange will get crowded at 7:30 if things go on schedule. oakland police are investigating five separate shootings that injured five men. the injuries of the men are not clear, but they are not life-threatening. the shootings do not appear to be related. meanwhile, a wall net creek man is under arrest in connection with a deadly crash. this is an update to the story we first brought you yesterday.

police say 31-year-old frank behavery was speeding and hit a pacifica man who died in the crash on geary boulevard around 2:15 yesterday morning. police say mavery was running red lights. the other man was pronounced dead at the scene. mavery is charged with felony vehicular manslaughter and driving without a license. a coach at an oakland charter school is under arrest this morning, and parents and teachers are stunned this morning. randy fulton is charged with two counts for possession and distribution of child pornography. he has coached girls basketball, volleyball and softball since being hired in 2006. the superintendent of schools mark ryan says he's surprised at the allegations. federal and state background

checks that were conducted before they hired him showed a clean record. ryan says this type of news goes against the school's principle of structure and discipline. >> encouraging young people to be people of integrity, and we certainly expect that of our employees and of all people with whom our students regularly interact. >> the superintendent met with parents last night to tell them what happened. he is encouraging them to come forward if they have any information. meanwhile, parents are in shock over a reported sex crime at a boys and girls club in oakland. the victim is a 7-year-old boy. his alleged attackers all under the age of 12. it happened apparentfully the club's bathroom. police have not made any arrests. the club president says the boy didn't tell the staff about the sexual assault, but he went home and told his mother instead. his mother rushed him to children's hospital in oakland. he was examined and released.

the club president says the boy joined the club a week ago. they questioned five boys and some staff members thursday. nobody has been detained yet. in north richmond sheriff's deputies are escorting buses after a shooting on a transit bus. con tras costa county leaders are saying there's a rough stretch where the shooting happened. a bus passes through every half hour. we are told the patrol will happen indefinitely each night between 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. walnut creek is dealing with an unusual graffiti problem called yarn bombing. the phenomenon is now popping up in the east bay. here's a photo showing a light pole on bonanza street covered by a five-foot tall cozy.

they left a link to the website yarnbombing.com. the city will treat yarn bombs like any other graffiti and take it down within two days after it is reported. we could know the fate of a handful of cal berkeley sports today that are on the chopping block. cal berkeley leaders are counting the money trying to figure out if they can save the athletic programs from the budget ax. christie smith is live with the latest. >> reporter: good morning to you. happy friday. decision day for five cal sports teams was supposed to be yesterday, but the university wanted to give itself extra time to make sure everyone who made a commitment to help these teams actually will come through with their promise. somewhere between $12 million and $15 million was pledged to rescue mens and womens gymnastics, lacrosse, rugby and baseball. the university said $25 million

would be needed to keep their status as full varsity sports programs. and then back in september the chancellor said the teams would be cut to save $4 million for the first year. and some uc supporters think the one-day delay could be a positive sign meaning it is a whole lot of money being pledged for the university to walk away from, but there's another theory also, that only certain sports programs would survive. for instance n the interest of federal gender equity requirements, some think that perhaps only womens lacrosse and gymnastics may be reinstated. we'll learn the answer when they make the real announcement expected later this morning. reporting live at uc berkeley, christie smith, "today in the east bay." grammy nominated singer and producer shield sheila ease will

be there to talk about music in san leandro schools. the meeting will be at the school district office. afterwards she will visit a local elementary school. you can learn more about autism in oakland today. the panel at the autism forum will talk about the budget impact on services for people living with autism. they will discuss everything from early identification of autism to reimbursement for insurance payments. the forum will be at the cathedral of christ on harrison street. we'll talk weather. it is a cold start to the day. it was a cold night. >> a cold night. we get up at 2:30. we are wacky people. 37 degrees in oakland. it is okay, we want to bring you the news bright and early. 34 degrees in concord. 40 in hayward. a chilly start out there.

a holiday weekend on tap for us. valentine's day is monday. it is going to be really nice saturday and sunday, but on monday the showers arrive. we have a really potent system approaching the cost rapidly. this is going to bring us an inch of rain over the course of monday into tuesday. then after that the systems are lining up. we'll see a lot of snowfall next week, a lot of rainfall. i think the snow levels will fall to about 4,50 to feet by the end of next week. we could see a dusting of snow on the local mountains, definitely something that is changing for the wet pattern. that's what we are expecting heading through next week. today and tomorrow, dry. then sunday will be dry as well. 60 in oakland. 64 in concord. 67 in fairfield. lots of sunshine. showers to the north. then that wet pattern really starts to kick in as we head into monday. so get ready for that. no problems on the road when it comes to fog. any problems otherwise? not so much as far as the volume of traffic either because

causing a massive fire in eastern ohio. you can see the flames lighting up the sky there in columbiana county. it took several hours to get the brush fires under control. the explosion happened in a very rural area. no serious damages or injuries. we'll check in with christina. we have been talking about how cool it has been lately going into the weekend. >> you are always pretty cool, scott mcgrew. 34 degrees in concord right now. 38 in livermore. we are in the 20s in some cities. and we are going to cool off heading throughout the next couple of hours. the coldest time of the morning is just after sunrise, which is at 7:16 this time of the year. 27 degrees in gilroy. it will drop to 25 degrees before all is said and done this morning. high pressure is the dominant feature in our weather forecast. for today it will be pretty nice. you will notice more clouds for the second half of the day. yesterday could not find a cloud in the sky. and then you see what's coming,

all the spotty clouds approaching the coast. that's a cold air mass that will bring us some pretty heavy rain on tuesday. it looks like the second half of monday into tuesday we have another shot wednesday into thursday. all week long we are expecting rain next week. so enjoy the sunshine for the next three days. 65 in livermore today. 67 in fairfield. the east bay temperatures are mostly in the mid-60s. tomorrow is a bit warmer. then the rain arrives. we'll talk more about that and how much we are expecting coming up. now we'll check the drive with mike inouye. good morning, christina. we'll take a wide look at the east bay. a part we often talk about with things going on near highway 4. it will start to slow down. antioch, in particular, i have an accident on westbound 4 near railroad avenue. there are more reasons for slowing there. we expect the bulk of the traffic coming off the antioch bridge at 5:30. a smooth drive across the bridges. you are at the limit coming

southbound on your commute. eastbound for the cartinas bridge we'll have slowing later this afternoon. a live look shows you the volume of traffic. that's friday light. that's what we talk about. it is also friday late because the backups start later than the rest of the week. it is a bizarre fluxuation in apple's stock. words that after three weeks of medical leave steve jobs is still closely involved in the company. the wall street journal says he's been taking business meetings at home and own the phone and has been seen at apple's headquarters. jobs continues to work on the next ipad expected out in a few minutes. the next iphone will come out this summer. and bloggers claim apple is reportedly working on a cheaper version of an iphone to compete with the lower costing droid. it would be smaller than the iphone4 and could be sold for $200 with a two-year contract. for more on that and news before the bell, we'll go to scott cohn

live at cnbc world headquarters. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. we are looking at lower futures, really continuing to look at the situation in egypt, which is sending a ripple through all markets. oil prices are a touch higher today. crude is trading above $87 a barrel now. the dollar is higher against other currencies. investors look at the dollar as a safe haven if the protests turn violent. stocks ended flat thursday, the dow was down ten points. cisco's disappointing earnings raised spending issues. europe so far is mixed. we get data today on the trade deficit and consumer sentiment. the dow fell ten yesterday to 12,229. the nasdaq managed to squeeze out a one-point rise to 2790. today the obama administration will unveil a long-auh waited plan that could lead to a change how americans buy their homes. the housing white paper lays out options for overhauling the

mortgage system to reduce the government's role in the housing finance market. reports say if that's a gradual wind down of fannie mae and freddie mac by making the loans they back more expensive. the federal housing administration would then become mainly the soul for government-backed loans. retailers are turning to facebook and twit tore drum up sales. they estimate people will spend about $116 on average this year up 13% from last year. among the promotions out there, mattel is asking you to vote on whether barbie and ken should get back together. remember they split in 2004. on monday barbie's facebook page becomes a virtual store. victoria's secret has e-valentine's to send while mullberry has digital flowers that will wait to bloom until monday, which is valentine's day. scott, back to you. >> can i give you add vice, do not send your wife digital flowers? >> reporter: oh, yeah, i know

better than that. >> some guy will do it, but we are older guys and understand how it works. have a great week. a national movie chain could be putting a for sale sign up. blockbuster is preparing to offer itself for sale after its creditors couldn't agree on how to fund the chain to help it escape bankruptcy. blockbuster could ask a judge to approve bidding procedures as soon as next week. mothers who use breast pumps and other supplies to feed their babies can deproduct deduct the cost from their taxes. many of them can be deducted as medical expenses. you can use pre-taxed funds from flex spending accounts and house savings to pay for the pumps. the pumps and supplies can run as much as $1,000 a year. next time you fly the friendly skies take note of your arrival and departure times. some will be pretty close to what you have been told but not

always. >> reporter: as long as a flight arrives or departs no later than 15 minutes than the airline said it would then it is considered on time. some of the worst december weather blue the on-time record for many airlines, but even with that the u.s. department of transportation says overall on-time performance remained the same last year as it was the year before. hawaiian airlines had the best record with nearly 88% of the its flights on time followed by united and airtran. while comeair and jet blue had the worst record with on-time rates near 60%. the transportation report says all airlines did a better job handling luggage, but passenger complaints were actually up in 2010 compared to 2009. chris clackum, nbc news.

it is just before 3:00 in the afternoon in cairo. thousands of people are still in tahrir square. hosni mubarak is not stepping down, much to the shock of protesters who expected him to do just that. tracie potts is in washington monitoring the situation as people in cairo are getting more frustrated by the minute. >> reporter: egypt's president is refusing to go and so are the protesters. >> they are stubborn as well just like president hosni mubarak. >> reporter: even president obama thought he would step down. >> history is unfolding. the moment of transformation is taking place. >> reporter: but mubarak won't budge turning over command to his vice president but vowing to stay on until september. disappointment in cairo and here in the u.s. >> well, we honestly expected him to resign today but he didn't.
