push to the north except for the most immediate portion of the coast in the north bay. they will stay dry today, but this is what it looks like at 9:00 a.m. widespread showers are lasting pretty much all day today. we are seeing clearing at 11:00 p.m. tonight. we'll see lot of the shower activity push off to the east. then tomorrow morning a nice break. more rain on the way towards noon tomorrow. that means if you want to make plans this weekend, sunday will be your best bet. we do have another system on the way for sunday night into monday. but i think sunday is your best day. mostly sunny conditions. 55 in san jose. 58 in almaden valley. isolated thunder definite lay possibility, especially this afternoon. your seven-day outlook shows you we are going to stay pretty rainy all the way through this weekend. a few showers on president's day. and i do want to point out, it is going to be very, very cold tonight into tomorrow morning. if you want to protect the sensitive plants, there's a threat of frost definitely in the forecast. you probably want to keep the pets inside and protect the

6:45 am
about san mateo where we have a note for highway 101 passing near sfo. between 8:00 and 9:00 president obama will be leaving. you will see the motorcade coming through the area. that will be a disturbance for the peninsula. cal has one of the top baseball teams in the country, yet despite their success this will likely be their final season. today marks the 120th consecutive opening day celebration, but it will be a bittersweet event with baseball set to be cut. uc berkeley is cutting the sports budget at the end of the school year and baseball is one of the programs being dropped. baseball teams start the season ranked 17th in the country according to baseball america pre-season polls. the golden bears take on utah at home this afternoon at 1:30. so sad to see that. giants' manager bruce bulgy is talking about his closer, brian wilson. he skipped the last couple days of workout. he has a stiff back.
6:46 am
he is emphasizing that wilson is not seriously hurt. he led the major leagues with 48 saves last season. he has been bothered by similar back problems in the past. he says he usually missing a day or two and gets back in the swing of things so to speak. it is friday, and today we have a new gadget that is not on store shelves yet. >> it is the nintendo 3ds. it is nor complex than it used to be. david young with sony is here with our own scott mcgrew. >> this is a cool gadget friday because it is a gadget we have not seen yet and isn't quite available in stores yet. david young from nintendo is joining me. this is the 3-d ds. >> that's right. this is coming out march 27th. and it is the latest, greatest thing from then ten dough. >> the top line is there's a third dimension to that. i'll get to that in a second. however, it is a much more complex device than it used to be. it used to be a very enjoyable
6:47 am
toy, this kind of feels and looks more like a computer. >> yeah, you know, we have, of course, been in the handheld game business since 1989. you may remember the little thing called the gameboy. but with then ten nintendo 3ds, it has gone beyond the grown-up. it is a lot more connected than we have been. >> from a business standpoint there's more competition out there than when you had gamepoi. ipad is what i'm thinking of. immediately ipad is a gaming device. you have to come back with something strong. >> yeah, right. so the nintendo 3ds is really a lot more connected. there's a lot of ways that gamers can connect with each other and play games. even if they are not playing, if it is just in sleep mode. >> you did a heck of a job of totally avoiding the ipad question. i'll move on. the question wants the know about the 3d. you can't see the 3-d on tv. you have to take my word for it as far as that goes.
6:48 am
it is very convincing and no glasses. >> yeah, exactly. full 3-d without the use of glasses. what makes this really special is you can use the depth slider to adjust the amount of 3-d that is comfortable for you. >> give me -- i know my reaction when i first played the game to shoot the targets was wow, when people first pick it up and go, they do react, what sort of reaction do you get? >> that is it, the wow factor, the oh, my god, moment. that's why we are excited to be able to bring this out to different retailers and different experiences where people can see this for themselves coming out. >> i want to stick this in my pocket but i won't. when is this available? >> march 27th. it is coming in three new colors. like i said, you have to see it to believe. >> don't forget to take that with you. >> oh, wait a minute, i thought i had two. >> back to you. >> all right. scott playing a little fun with nintendo there. it is 6:48 right now. president obama is leaving the bay area in have u.s. just a few

a budget showdown could happen in the nation's capitol today. the house republicans will try to pass a budget with thousands of dollars in spending cuts. kristen dahlgren is live with what could get the ax if the budget is approved. kristen? >> reporter: they, brent. the budget showdown could lead to a government shutdown. so we are coming up against a dead lynn deadline here. the house of representatives is back at it this morning. they were here until 1:00 a.m. last night trying to hash out this republican plan for 61 billion dollars in cuts. cuts to things like arts, funding for health care, also a debate going late into the night over funding for planned parenthood. republicans want to cut planned parenthood funding altogether. democrats have ideas on spending cuts as well but much slimmer cuts than we are hearing from the republicans. now, here's where the showdown could be a problem. the march 4th deadline is looming where the government wouldn't be funded after that
6:53 am
point. new house speaker john boehner said the house would refuse even a temporary spending measure if it kept spending at the current level. he said, read my lips, there will be spending cutting. so the democrats say there needs to be a compromise or the showdown leads to a government shut down on march 4th. the republicans are trying to debate it throughout the day with more than 100 amendments to this bill still to go through. it is possible we could see a vote later on today. also possible that they could extend and have a saturday session and go into saturday. now, if it does pass the house of representatives it will go to the senate to see a face-off there. we have not seen the last of that one. president obama is getting ready to leave the bay area this morning. during his short stay in the bay area he met with some of silicon valley's most high-profile faces. bob redell is live where the

president is staying this morning. >> reporter: yes, a very short stay. he only arrived yesterday evening and he'll be leaving in a couple hours. he's staying at the weston here in millbrae. we think maybe within a couple of hours he'll take a motorcade to sfo with not very far to go with sfo. there it is right there across the bay. he'll be taking off to hillsboro, oregon, where he'll be meeting with intel's ceo for a tour of their new chip manufacturing plant that's under construction. here in the bay area does not have anything to do with fund-raising. sometimes when the presidents come out to the bay area they are on a fund-raising trip, but that was not the case here. he was here to collect the thoughts of silicon valley's brightest. here's a photo from the white house taken from mark zuckerberg and president obama. mark zuckerberg is the founder and ceo of facebook. also in attendance at the meeting last night, apple's case

steve jobs, oracle's ceo larry ellison and a dozen from silicon valley. they met at the woodside home of venture capitalist john doerr. they discussed the plan for innovation. it sounds like the president was trying to get support for him for his proposals for education and innovation, that sort of thing. and in return offering promises to them to make the business environment easier for these companies to do business globally and to do that in making it easier to get patents, that sort of thing, offering credits for rnd. there's air force one. the president will be leaving sfo in an hour and a half at 8:30. reporting live in millbrae, bob redell, "today in the bay." thank you, bob. >> meantime, 6:55. we want to update you on the forecast as we head into your friday and the long weekend. christina has the latest on
6:56 am
that. >> good morning to you, yes, i have the latest, and we have more rain training in from the south at this time. but what we are noticing is that some of these showers are creeping up now heading to the north. take a look at all the mountain snow coming down over the higher elevations indicated by the white. you can see the pink here, that's the rain/snow line. and this morning snow levels are at 2,000 feet. if we do pick up any rain tomorrow because it is going to be sol cold we could see flurries on the valley floor. that's a treat here in the bay area. if that happens, the most likely area will be the south bay because that's where all the moisture is coming in. as we head through the next few hours we'll start to see a lot of the rain creep up to the north. tinge north bay near santa rosa will stay dry today. count on the isolated thunder later on. here's the exnded outlook. not a whole lot of change. protect the sensitive plants and bring in the pets sunday night into monday. here's a check on traffic now with mike inouye. we have finally seen slowing for highway 4. that means my sensors are
6:57 am
working. we have speeds down in the 20s. then also in the 40s heading to pittsburgh and bay point, those are the real slowdowns through the east bay. look at this out of the altamonte pass. no major disturbances. but we have wet roads and gusty conditions from time to time. getting out of the area traffic will start at 3:00. a close look at home, the san mateo bridge is seeing sloppy conditions near the peninsula. back to you. stay dry out there this morning as you head out the door. thank you so much for joining us. the "today" show is coming up next. we'll have a live local news update in after how half hour. have a great day and a great weekend. see you back here in a bit. rocket scientists! you gave us the space age... but your savings accounts are stuck in the stone age! earn more commodore with interestplus savings at capitalone.com. that's new school banking, baby!
