much healthier than the ameri n americaniz americanized latino diet. we have a healthy lifestyles clinic for children affected by over weight or obese. we want to catch you before you get to the obese level. what we do is identify children who are at risk for becoming obese and try to funnel them into good medical care to make sure they don't have prediabetes or any medical problem like thyroid disease or something we can treat and dress that. we look at lifestyle choices and try to talk about no juice or modifying the doctor that runs the obesity clinic and the doctor used to have a juice and a circle and a line. no offense to juice producers, but a glass of orange juice has five or six oranges in it. eat the orange. talk about healthy choices and how to fit it into a diet that's appropriate. >> before we get to the award,

it sounds like sf general is culturally sensitive. does a hospital have to be there? do we have to gauge the constituen constituents? >> i would think that's the best approach and san francisco general, you have seen the hearts campaign from the foundation. we call ourselves and i hope it's a good description the heart of the city and we feel strongly that the people that work in the hospital need to understand that people that get care at the hospital. for example, in my department it's a small department of pediatrics, i think 80% of the providers speak a language including english. a second language that meets the needs of the patients a lot of people that work in my department live in the mission or the hills around the area. i think for us and i can't speak for every single person, but i think in general the people that work at san francisco general work there because of the commitment to the community. >> we have a few seconds and i

want to talk about heroes and community and i was one of them. there were several others and i was the one of the ones who go above and beyond. one of the components that led my colleagues to nominate me, we had an epidemic in california of pertuszis, whooping cough. it affected the latino community and one of the things i am proud to be part of is working with the city and the department of public health and the immunization branch to start a program that vaccinates all parents of children under age 1. so that families and not just children could be protected from the disease. i think it was an important effort because it showed how even pediatricians can give

shots to adults. we had a lot of dads not wanting to get shots, but what you talk about protecting an infant or a niece or a nephew or son or daughter, really making it a community effort and looking at the hospital and seeing how to be creative in health care. i think that's what i am most proud of and i'm so honored my colleagues chose to honor me that way >> it's well-deserved, i can tell. this is the web address much the san francisco general hospital foundation. it's dot net. write that down. help them out if you can. thank you for your work >> thank you. pa. >> up next, latino wading. >> up.

>> i'm contributing a new word to the english language. start with the word innovating. latino va ting. industrial and social innovation influenced by latinos that include creative use, conservation of our natural resources. >> you wrote a book and what do you want the reader to -- the afterthought to be to go home with. >> i wrote this book for two reasons. the first reason is i had an opportunity to write an article about who in the latino community is involved in a great economy in some way. it's a general question and i wrote this article and i found over 20 people quickly that were questioning the status quo in industry. striking out to do their own thing and create their own businesses. i realized that the stories are

hidden stories. you don't hear the stories about people like rosa maria cabler or who trained 700 ecoconsultants to train at the local level. you don't hear the stories about those here in san francisco, funning innovation to conserve energy conservation. what i want the reader to take away is if you are a high school or college student, as you go into your professional work life, think about the power of being the environmental entrepreneur. use the role models and the examples to enter your working life as if the planet matters and question the status quo. give yourself permission to be an entrepreneur. >> 15 to 20 years ago, being green was seen as weird. now it's the in thing. if you are not green, then you are weird.

there is like a green revolution going on and you point out people who were a part of that revolution. >> very much so and i was fortunate to find so many. there only 10 and i'm working on the next volume. this is a stanford and uc davis-educated engineer. he is here in the bay area and he is, for example, working to reduce the energy that it takes to power giant bulbs and warehouses. this technology hasn't been updated in 60 years and made the stuff and have been using it, but it takes people like him to come along and say why are we wasting so much in when you read his story of not wasting anything, you understand that that cultural foundation that he grew up with coupled with his under grad degree and masters degree suddenly put him in a position to innovate and think differentlily and do something about it. that's what the stories are.

10 people in here that combine 19 degrees. there is a story there too about the power of higher education to propel you into positions of leadership. >> why are you so passionate about it? >> several reasons. first of all, i used to fly for the air force. i have seen the globe. i have seen the globe from a unique perspective and i understand how tiny it is. i think that seeded environmentalism for me. i have three children and they get to inherit the planet as your children do in whatever condition we leave it? . are two powerful reasons >> very. >> the approach i'm taking to go into colleges and universities and talk to high school students and college students and business schools where i'm going first, these kids will be in the business school in a couple of months next year and the year after that. to put these 10 stories of these folks here who have really

chosen a different path is very powerful. i'm thinking about the impact that could have as they go forward and they don't have to go with the company line that exists. they may go there to get experience, but they think you know what, i can do better. >> they have about 30 seconds. does it start with recycling and that's where you plant the seed? >> at personal level if you live the values, these stories are about people who have gone into industry and questioned the status quo. that's what that is about and what they have done. once i discovered the stories and what they can do. it's entrepreneurship to the mainstream and the community. for the role models for everybody else to set up and notice how much we are contributing and how it really is and the difference we are making. >> very good and very powerful. if you want to know how you may want to leave the planet for your kids, that is a powerful

tell us about your blog and what readers can get out of it. >> i started my blog about six months ago. it's about fashion and everything that you need to know about style. it's bilingual so it's spanish and english. i help people look good. i think that's very important for social and also for your work. they say it only takes about 10 seconds for someone to judge the way you look. you want to present yourself in the best way possible. >> you do that, do you have tips or people writing with advice? >> yes. pretty much i show what i wear and tell them where i get the clothes and talk about the latest trends, for example we just passed a few weeks ago and i talk about the latest on trends. how to look good without spending a lot of money because that's important right now. >> talk about what you are wearing. you have the bright colors and the high boots. >> this color, bright colors are

in for spring right now. i love orange. i think it looks good with our skin tone. over the knee high boots, they were hot this past season. i think they will still be good next season as well. with this skirt that i can't say where i got it because i don't know if i'm allowed to say it? can i say it? people say i spend a lot of money shopping? i got it at forever 21. i think it was less than $20. you don't need to spend a lot of money. you have to learn what looks good on you. that's the secret. >> can you look sexy and conservative at the same time? >> of course. i always say that. you don't have to show a lot to look sexy. that's one of the biggest mistakes people make. if i will wear over the knee high boots and i wear tights underneath and with a skirt, i cover up more on top and throw

on a blazer and things like that. >> what made you go from -- flora was a sports anchor for a while and now you went into fashion. what made you switch? you still talk to athletes here and there, but fashion is your gig right now >> i had a passion about fashion. ever since i was little. even when i did sports for telemundo, i loved fashion and intrigued about the way people look and dress and come forth. even when i did sports like you said, i would dress athletes and style some of them and so forth. for so long, people told me you should do this. you should give it a try. i hurt my back so in that time you just figure out what you are going to do next. it was something that came about. i'm very blessed and happy with the way things have turned out. >> the point i guess of it all is for them to look beautiful
