coming up in a live report. and forget heading to tahoe this weekend. see which roads are closed this morning. and a live look outside this morning. one of them that is not closed, 880 through the east bay, but it is looking a lot better today than yesterday. friday, march 25th, "today in the bay." good friday morning, everybody. thank you for joining us. strait up 6:00. i'm brent cannon. >> and i'm marla tellez in for laura. we'll get started with your hour-by-hour forecast. let's go to christina loren. good morning. good morning to you. we are seeing a lot of improvement. right now showers are stream ashore, but nothing like we had at this time yesterday. and the situation continues to improve for your weekend. we have your seven-day coming up. stay tuned for that, but first, we'll get you to work through the sloppy roadways with mike
6:01 am
inouye. good morning, christina. the south bay will look here at this accident reported on northbound 85 near highway 17. that's the bottom of the screen. no injuries there but it is over moving off to the shoulder. that's the same area we saw earlier reports of flooding at 4:00 this morning. so that is all cleared up but the accident is still moving there. the ice keeps you from getting to the peak of mount hamilton. nothing new there, so we'll look at the bay bridge. the earlier wind advisory has been canceled for the bay bridge, but look at the water. we have huge puddles approaching the toll plaza, especially in fast trax lanes. it is very slippery out there. back to you guys. we are seeing new landslides this morning. we have a look at new video in from fairfax in marin county. this is happening on white hill near sir francis drake boulevard. at last check crews were still on the scene cleaning it up. and one lone east bay commute will be a difficult one this morning. we are finding out about ace
6:02 am
transit cancelled this morning. christie smith has the latest on when wind ace transit will be rolling through the area. >> reporter: good morning to you. normally two trains would be rolling through here to san jose at 6:46 and 7:51 this morning, but no trains are rolling at all. it is very quiet. commuters have gotten the message. no train service due to a mud and rock slide through niles canyon. i talked with a spokesperson this morning for ace train, they really don't know exactly how bad it is. they just didn't want to take a chance this morning of getting any trains stranded. so they decided to cancel service today. he says they are in touch with union pacific about the state of the tracks and what's going on there in terms of a cleanup, if anything. they also tell me they plan to put out an update a little bit later today. i also have calls into union
6:03 am
pacific about the state of the tracks. normally three trains take 2,500 to 3,000 commuters between stockton and san jose in the morning and then three trains back in the evening. yesterday those riders got taxis or buses back home and the trains are still, we are told down in san jose. no bus service today. friday is the light day. the spokesperson expects service to be fully restored by monday morning. reporting live in pleasanton, christie smith, "today in the bay." thank you, christie. evacuation orders are no longer in effect in the santa cruz mountains this morning. automated calls went out to people in felton grove and paradise park yesterday afternoon. we will have more on the conditions in the santa cruz mountains coming up in a live report at 6:30. well, you have to see this video of damage in capatola. an underground storm drain failed flooding homes and
6:04 am
businesses. one business opener says it all happened in a matter of minutes. he watched the water go up and over sandbags and flood his place. people who live near clear lake in lake county north of the bay area are getting ready for what could be the first flood there in 13 years. the lake is expected to hit flood stage at 11:00 this morning. in fact, water is already reaching the decks of some home that is are along the shore. sacramento report that is some people have already left town there. meantime, a sonoma county man went outside just in time to see a big tree crash through his home. also a tree took out an entire neighborhood's power supply because it landed on lines in the tiny area called camp meeker. san jose will decide later this morning if it will reopen alum rock park. the city closed it yesterday. the storm created hazardous conditions at the park. a decision will be made by 9:00
6:05 am
this morning. there is so much snow in the sierra you may not be able to get up there to enjoy it. in fact, a big section of interstate 80 is closed this morning. brian hickey from our nbc station in sacramento is live near the end of the line at colfax. brian, what's going on up there? oh, he's getting hooked up right now. i can see him getting ready. hey, brian. he's waving. they must have had a bit of a problem because there's so much water up there. it can ruin your mike. are you hooked up and ready to go, brian? >> reporter: yeah, it was water that got in there. sorry about that. yes, we are in colfax where it was rain and now it is snow. you can see even at this low elevation snow continues to fall. and behind us here is the caltrans closure here in colfax that has been in place since yesterday afternoon. and drivers have been camped out right over here. look at this, these poor drivers have been waiting and hoping the road would reopen some time overnight. that's not the case. in fact, caltrans and chp are telling us it likely won't
6:06 am
reopen until noon because of avalanche concerns and zero visibility and all of the snow that has fallen over the sierra. it is going to take them some time to clean it up and stabilize those slopes. in the meantime, all the drivers camped out, not a good time to try to be heading into the sierra or perhaps over torino. to reno. the drivers are bringing patience. >> up the mountain i hear it is pretty bad, i don't know. but anyway, we are hoping to get out of here. if it is not going to open until noon, we'll probably split up. maybe at 6:00 or 7:00 this morning. >> reporter: back here live, you can see the conditions again. snowing here in colfax and all the cars are lined up. as soon as we hear anything we'll pass it on to you. we'll go to interstate 80 right now, you can see a caravan of plows making their way down the mountain. that's a good sign as they continue to work the lower part of the mountain. it's the upper part near kingvale where they have to run the heavy-duty graters before
6:07 am
the plows can go up to reopen the road. back to you guys. >> brian, i know that's often a problem in the high country when you get that much snow that sometimes even though they have the equipment, there's nowhere to put the snow anymore. that becomes an issue. >> reporter: if you have been over 80 in the last week, the snow banks in some cases are 1546, 15-plus feet tall. they have to get the massive snow blowers to blow it up over the bank. that's a great point. talking to one of the caltrans workers, when they came down yesterday to set up the road closure, the snow has drifted from the snow bank, from the top of the snow banks all the way down to the center of the road. they were basically carving a pass through the can yoon canyon of snow. >> that helps. like you had the driver there that spoke to you a moment ago saying it is not too bad here, it is worse up the mountain. i have to give you credit, brian, that was the fastest mike
6:08 am
change i have ever seen on live tv. thank you, buddy. >> thank you. they have snow slides and we have landslides in the bay area. >> that's the thing. getting some of the light showers, it is not a big deal like yesterday, but we are so saturated that that is the problem. >> that's the problem. even when it stops raining later on today that still is going to be something that we are really concerned about because our grounds are so saturated and like bob redell pointed out the land is still moving in some areas. we still have been under the gun for the potential for downed trees and power lines. we'll watch it for you and bring the information to you as soon as it comes into the newsroom. right now we have a bit of shower activity pushing into the bay area. it is definitely spotty. definitely enough to keep our roadways nice and slick. that was my friend you just heard. we are going to introduce you to him in a minute. showers continue to push past 680 right now through livermore. and it is going to be a little bit better today than it was yesterday, but still we have ponding on the roadways, we have
6:09 am
slick conditions in many spots. so you still want to give yourself ample time to get to your destination this morning. this is the system crossing through tonight. it will pass us to our north, but it will drive a front through the area. so we are expecting rainfall to come down overnight. nothing heavy, maybe .75 an inch at best. heading through sunday another system drops into the area bringing light showers as well, but both days will provide enough sunshine for you to get outside for a couple hours. 48 in hayward, 47 in sunnyvale. and 44 degrees right now in santa cruz. it will turn to the mid-50s heading throughout the day today. 56 in oakland. 53 in santa rosa. 54 in los gatos where we have wind speeds yesterday gusting over 70 miles per hour. so definitely improvement in this neck of the woods. heading throughout the next few days more improvement. take a look at monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, we'll see a lot of clearing. it is looking good. 71 degrees by thursday. all right, are you ready for the word of the day?
6:10 am
let's get it up there, guys. peeps! celebrate peeps. log on to our website, nbcbayarea.com, enter in the word of the day. and you could win tickets to see the major motion picture "hop." you have to get hopping to get to work on time this morning. we'll take you past hop yard. i'll post a link to one of my favorite peeps sites as well. 580 has a smooth drive out of the altamont pass. friday light is typical today but we could see more folks because of the closure near the altamont commuter express. the ace train has no service like christie smith toll told you. the reason for the closure of the ace trains is because of the mud slide going on near the niles area. watch highway 84 here. there are a lot of issues going on there. we have a smooth drive for 680 through sonoma and 880 through the area as well. we'll look at 92. the san mateo bridge over the
6:11 am
water, we had an earlier wind advisory canceled. no major issues traveling westbound with the taillights over to the peninsula, which is calm at 101 and 280 alike. the bay bridge, we'll look at that. that's very calm as far as the winds go. we'll see more folks pick up here, 15 to 20 minutes for the metering lights to turn on. look at the huge puddles. last the big factor here. watch for rock slides throughout the morning. we'll send it back to the desk. it is 6:11 now. still to come on "today in the bay," uc berkeley is shopping around a development to bring jobs and money to the city it chooses. and sales taxes are about to jump around the bay area. find out where you have to start paying a lot more. plus, find out where the governor just made cuts to the budget. and a live look outside this morning at 880. again, it is getting busier, but at least it is not like it was in.longute wel g inlong. the internet on a plane! are you from the future?

6:13 now. welcome back. a live look at the san mateo bridge. so far no major problems to look for. better news than yesterday. the chances of a special election in june are getting slimmer this morning. the governor signed into law billions of dollars worth of cuts yesterday closing a significant chunk of the state's $26 billion deficit. however, he says a special election and cuts to redevelopment funding is needed to get us the rest of the way. it is too late to put tax extension measures on the june 7th ballot. but governor brown is still taming for some time in june. only six shopping days left until people in a number of bay area cities will end up paying more at the check stand. sales taxes go up in seven bay
6:15 am
area cities on april 1st. that's when union city and el cerrito will have a 10.25% sales tax. san leandro will hit 10%. concord's will reach 9.75%. novato and santa rosa will reach 9.5%. the sales tax hikes were approved in november by voters in each city. several east bay cities are in the hunt to land a new prestigious laboratory. and they are pulling out all the stops. the lawrence berkeley national laboratory is looking to build a new campus in addition to the one already in berkeley. the city of oakland is offering up four sites for consideration including the old pacific pipe and american steel factories in west oakland. other cities bidding for the lab include alameda, richmond, dublin and walnut creek. the land is expected to bring plenty of jobs and millions of dollars to whatever city lands it. san francisco spca is getting set to host the annual
6:16 am
bark and whiine ball. scarlet is here joining me this morning to talk about it. good morning, and i should mention you have a little friend with you, priscilla here, who is quite active and ready to roll. oh, yeah. >> priscilla had three cups of espresso in the back. >> do you serve that at the spca? tell us a little bit about the event. 15th annual ball, raising a lot of money to help eager dogs like this one. in fact, she was there a couple years ago and you took her in to do surgery and things. >> this event is to promote the cinderella fund, a fund we use to treat a lot of animals who come in with extraordinary illnesses and injuries like priscilla. she had a broken leg. >> she was a three-legged dog or is? >> yes, a three-legged dog now. look at her attitude, she is so happy and eager.
6:17 am
her partner is right over there. her momma is over there. she wants to see mommy there. tell us about this event. what's going to happen this year if people want to get involved and how do they help, that kind of thing? >> it is a really fun event. it is this wednesday, the 30th. it is at fort mason pavilion. tickets are on sale at sfpca.org. you can buy tickets at the door, but it is a great night. bring your pup if you would like. >> it is dog-friendly. >> yes, dog-friendly. >> very cool. in more ways than one. >> you have a few days to get an outfit for your dog and come on down. >> do you encourage outfits? >> absolutely. >> it is kind of a mardi gras kind of thing. >> it is a great time. >> how is this going to help you guys? you know, you raise the money but then that helps you going forward. >> yes, we use about $460,000 a year to treat animals with illnesses in our hospital and find them homes. so it goes to a great cause. >> i think she's like, i am so done with this interview.
6:18 am
i want to go play. i see the opportunity for fun. jennifer, i'm going to let you go because, obviously, you have to. >> exactly. >> thank you for joining us this morning. we'll get folks out there to help you as well. it should be a decent weather-wise event. not perfect, but it won't be a deluge like yesterday. not purr-fect. i think she's trying to tell me she's sick of the rain as many people who want to take their dogs for a walk probably are. good morning to you. a great event. rescue dogs are the best. they are so loyal. i have one name? named stingy. the showers are rather spotty. we have heavier downpours coming down through places like antioch and livermore where we kind of see the storms and the very few storms we have had this morning passing through the east bay. this is what we are expecting as we head throughout the day today. we'll get a break from the rain, probably starting at 9:00 a.m.
6:19 am
a mostly dry bay area, but we are talking about mostly cloudy conditions. not by any means nice today, but still when you consider the fact that we are not going to have the heavy rain coming down throughout the day it is not that bad. rain moves in tonight and we could pick up to 3/4 an inch. we have another weather maker on the way for sunday. this will pass to the knot grag dragging the cold front through the area. nothing heavy. i think you can make outdoor plans for both days. we'll see enough sunshine for several hours on saturday and sunday for you to finally get that vitamin d you have been lacking. 48 degrees right now in san francisco. 48 in hayward. 47 degrees in livermore. as we head throughout this afternoon, probably a ten-degree spread in our temperatures between the highs and lows. 54 in los gatos. 54 in san jose. 55 in fremont. as we have a cold air mass overhead, courtesy of the system that passed through yesterday. it brought a cold front through here. here it is, the extended outlook. not too bad, especially when you zero in on tuesday, wednesday and thursday.
6:20 am
71 degrees by thursday. spring-like weather finally makes its way into the bay area. so if you have been saying rain, rain, go away. finally we'll get a break. back to you guys. the rain is still causing a lot of mudslides and rock slides. and one major transit service is stopped this morning. we'll have a live report on that coming up. plus, one of the really cool ipad lkhel taut abop flird boana we'll talk about flip boardnd a atwh ahead for it coming up in tech today.

6:23 am
welcome back. here's a live look over san jose this morning. not leerily as wet as it has been. rather, i'm sorry, this is san francisco. hard to tell. still dark outside. 6:23. >> i was believing it. >> don't believe everything i say apparently, huh? we are watching these folks getting to work this morning. mike inouye has the latest on the roads. >> we certainly are. we are watching the entire bay area. marla, you are fine and covered. right here, the south bay, we have an incident here that has cleared. look at the chopper crossing the screen. you are looking south to the south bay. highway 101 right at 680, the camera froze there, too. wow, things are happening all over the place. but the accident cleared for 87. out to the maps again. we'll look over here, 880 looking nice coming up past the coliseum. brent told you we are watching these folks because we had two lanes blocked by pothole repair for 12 hours into this morning, but it has cleared. a smooth drive right now.
6:24 am
it is pinging up, but it is friday light. for the nemitz, the eastshore freeway, just a 19-minute drive. the bay bridge had earlier wind advisories but they have been cleared. we are looking out to a wide shot. we see a nice flow to the maze. i'll give you slow spots coming up in the next report. thank you, mike. >> well, the latest batch of ncaa tournament games provided big surprises. >> yeah, a few upsets last night. probably the biggest one happening in anaheim. defending champs duke blue devils lost to the fifth seeded arizona wildcats. they dominated them in the second half. they pounded them 93-77. that was the final there. here's the latest on the bracket challenge. yours truly still in the lead with 50 points. there you go. laura, she's bitter and angry. >> that's why she's not here today, huh? >> she's so mad she doesn't like to talk about it. she has a cold. she's in second place. christina on her heels.
6:25 am
mike and then, well, scott. >> explain to me, if i had duke winning it all, is last night's loss, that's probably bad. >> yeah, that's the nail in the coffin there. >> okay. all right. >> i believe i hear singing in the distance. >> christina, you still have a chance, right? you have kansas that plays tonight. >> i'm still on pace to win, brent cannon. don't get too cocky just yet. >> who do you have going all the way? >> kansas. they are going to win tonight. >> i also have kansas. so you won't gain ground on me if you win. >> i'm completely out of this whole bracket thing, so i'm just sensing the tension in here. it is killing me. >> it is a good thing you are between me and mike. don't make me come to your end of the desk. >> i'm still going with ucla and duke. i'm sticking with that. next year we'll get you. >> very cool. we are talking to scott now. we'll talk about something he
6:26 am
can cover well, and that's the economy lately. and there have been hiccups, however the silicon valley is doing much better in the economy than you are in your brackets. >> it is. speaking of bad news in brackets, just look at the last four or five days of national news. sales of existing homes plunge, sales of new homes, lowest level in decades. just yesterday durable good sales fell. these are the things you keep for many years like refrigerators, that kind of thing. tech companies are avoiding the bad news. last night the peninsula's oracle said sales of its hardware and software were gang busters. revenue is up 37% and it boosted the amount paid out to shareholders by 20%. that's good news. a lot of money is going into the economy surrounding the redwood shores area there. hey, have you tripped flipboard yet? it is truly one of the world's best ipad apps that creates a digital magazine out of all kinds of content like "the new york times" and facebook. so on the same magazine you are seeing pictures of your friends
6:27 am
and the latest news from japan. it doesn't cost a cent. and i asked the head of flipboard how the company can survive. he said changes may be coming. >> he says on "press here" that sub kripgss and advertising are coming to flipboard at some point. >> well, certainly, advertising will be the case. and we'll have to see how sub kripgss play out. there's a lot of moving parts there, but that could very well be the case as well. >> mike mccoup, the head of flipboard on "press here" after "meet the press." he sold the company tell me for millions of dollars. we talk about all kind of stuff coming up sunday morning. sounds good. thank you, scott. >> 6:27 now. a strong quake hit along thailand's border overnight. details coming up. there are new concerns this morning about what could happen at that damaged nuclear plant in japan. [ banker ] when ashley's violin teacher told her parents she was gifted,
6:28 am
they were thrilled. she's a natural vibrato. oh. we started saving for this music camp in vermont. so i told them about some of the wells fargo online savings tools like my savings plan, which helps them set up and monitor a savings goal. until we found out that maybe her teacher uses certain terms a little bit loosely. rebecca is clearly very gifted. [ banker ] we decided to roll that money into ashley's college account. turns out there's seven gifted kids in ashley's class of nine.
6:30 am
coming up on "today in the bay," the rain-saturated hillsides and this morning we are seeing a lot of landslides. and i'm bob redell live in the santa cruz mountains where you see heavy equipment on standby and for good reason. i'm explain that coming up. good morning. ace train riders, there's not a train in sight this morning. that's because service is canceled due to a mud slide. i'm christie smith. we'll tell you when trains will be rolling again. good friday morning, everybody. thank you for joining us. 6:30 right now. i'm brent cannon. >> i'm marla tellez in for laura. we'll get you moving with an
6:31 am
hour-by-hour forecast and christina. good morning to you. i'll tell you what's moving, the jet stream. it was digging to the south. you can see that very well-defined jet here. now it is starting to lift to the north. that is our improvement. the jet stream is like a river of air to carry low pressure systems to and fro the united states. what you can count on today, improvement. we'll see breaks of sunshine, but we have a little more activity anticipated for the weekend. we'll break that down for you with your extended forecast coming up. stay tuned. right now, if you have to get to work, make sure you are ready. mike, what does it look like out there? christina, it is a little slow in antioch right here at highway 4. typical slowdowns for a friday. going from about 8th street to loveridge, no big surprises except for the 45 in bay point. we'll see if that extends itself further to the concord commute. further south the altamont pass, the commute is looking nice westbound in your commute direction out of the area. wet roads but no problems as far as the drive goes. christie smith has a report coming up on why more folks are
6:32 am
hitting the road today instead of the rails. here's a live shot of the bay bridge where we have a build up as far as traffic volume and a lot of water. standing water all over the bay. watch the puddles and avoid them if you can. you can't at the bay bridge toll plaza because it is in the roadway approaching the tolls. you have to pay those. well, as the rain continues, a threat of major mudslides is rising this morning. the ground is so saturated it cannot hold any more water. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in the santa cruz mountains with a look at the latest conditions there. bob, are you sinking into the ground? >> reporter: no, unfortunately, for the people here in the santa cruz mountains, marla, they have no choice when the spigot turns off. this is not good news to get more rain. fortunately, it is not a downpour, but it is heavy rain. and the more rain the worse off they are here because, as you mentioned, the ground is very saturated and the soil is loose. we have seen caltrans with their plows going up and down, back and forth, on highway 17.
6:33 am
which is behind you right here in the santa cruz mountains. they are pushing off any rock or debris that could be pushing out into traffic. you can see they have this front-end loader on standby in case they need it for a much bigger job. you know, a mudslide, for instance. we have only seen one instance in which that might have been needed but workers already cleared that up. we have take an look at pictures here that we shot. you can see what happens when the ground becomes saturated. a very large tree cut this house in two in scott's valley. even though the owner was inside the kitchen at the time, remarkably, he was not hurt. this incidentally is not far from the other rock slide that shut down a road earlier this week cutting off vehicle access, isolating several other people who were stuck on the other side of the rock slide. some other pictures, this is from felton, not far from where we are at, the san lorenzo river was starting to jor flow, so yesterday afternoon san tra

santa cruz county evacuated 800 people who lived near there. fortunately last night before 7:00 the river subsided and the people were allowed to go back home. the question is will the next couple of systems coming through the bay area, including whatever we have going on right now, be enough to push the san lorenzo river back up? that's the x factor. hopefully it will stay down. reporting live in santa cruz, bob redell for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. in a similar story in marin county, the ground is giving way causing problems there, too. check out new video we have as crews clean up a landslide on white's hill, which is near sir francis drake boulevard. there are traffic backups in the area because of all the heavy equipment. they have to do their work. of course, then there's the rocks and mud and stuff. so people are being diverted around the area. now, the commute into the east bay is impacted this morning because of a week's worth of rain. ace train service from the central valley is canceled this morning because of another landslide. and "today in the bay's"
6:35 am
christie smith is live in pleasanton with what crews are doing there, trying to get service back on track today. >> reporter: good morning to you, brent. this is really kind of odd, normally by this time you would see people standing around with their phones, their bags, getting ready to get on the train, but we have not seen one train roll through all morning long here at the pleasanton station. the next train would normally get here in about 15 minutes. it is 6:46 this morning. but no trains at all are running due to a mud and rock slide through niles canyon, which means for 2,500 the 3,000 commuters they have to find another way around this morning. or you have a great excuse not to go in or at least telecommute. three trains run daily to san jose from stockton in the morning and three back in the evening. i just spoke on the phone with an ace train spokesman who gave us an update on the tracks. >> we are hearing that they are able to make progress on the
6:36 am
tracks here through niles canyon. we anticipate running full schedule on monday. and that gives them a good weekend to make sure everything is dry. >> reporter: this is the closest we have come to seeing a train out there. we are told they are still in san jose. yesterday commuters took buses or taxis home. the spokesperson says they were notified by at least 6:00 p.m. what was going to be going on this morning. so again, the good news is it looks like everything will be up and running by monday morning. reporting live in pleasanton, christie smith, "today in the bay." thank you, christie, for the update. >> 6:36 now. terrifying moments for a mother and daughter relaxing at home in petaloma when a car crashed into their home just missing the young girl. witnesses say the driver of the car appeared to be asleep or unconscious when the car accelerated through a bank parking lot across the street and then into the home on south
