>> a look at the neighborhood nuisance in the south bay that has people up in arms with pg&e and the county. good morning. i'm marla tellez. the problem coming up. >> it's wednesday, march 30th. this is "today in the bay." good morning everyone. thanks for joining us. it is 6:00. i'm scott mcgrew. brent's off. >> he'll be back tomorrow. i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's get a look at the morning forecast with christina. another nice one to enjoy. >> oh, yes. it's going to be beautiful today. especially because we haven't seen these temperatures this warm in over a month. then tomorrow much warmer conditions. we're talking about summertime weather. we just kicked off spring. it's not going to last that long. by this weekend we're pretty much back to our seasonal

averages. today, tomorrow and friday the warmest. we're in the 50s. we'll let you know how warm we expect. first if you wake up in san francisco mike has important news. >> yes. christie smith is following the fire off 19th avenue. 19th avenue reopened but another closure, there is a fire reported just off of 101 between 101 and 280. the latest i this is that seventh street closed between brannen and brian street. so a couple of blocks in each direction between 101 and 280. our chopper is heading to the scene. maybe the approach from the east bay, moving smoothly but no major. >> mike we're in for that nice sunny stretch of weather. the rain that we have been having has left a dark cloud over a neighborhood.

homeowners on edge because of a new land slide threatening to wipe out a house. good morning. >> reporter: we're an almaden road off almaden road. i think you can get a sense i'm standing on a plant, this is a dead end street. the woman who lives here, they are not home. they packed up and left last night out of fear of a couple things. there is a land slide threatening the property, then look at this, this is the -- neighbors say this is a ruptured exposed gas line. this has been an ongoing problem. they called pg&e about 5:00, crews came out and checked it out and said you know, this is not a gas line. this is a water line so they teamed the area safe. again pg&e was called out.

they came out and brought fire crews and say it is a water line. the woman who lived here since the 1970s, she's not going to take that for an answer. she's fear sl of all of the mud in her back yard. she is convince there had is a gas leak. she took off with her family and kids spending the night in a hotel. sue sharon says no one is taking responsibility. county crews they have come out to her property, they looked at the land f. there were trees falling on her house. the crews tell her all is fine. pg&e and crews need to come out and do some final patch-up work too get this up and running again. scott? >> marla, thank you. >> there is a neighborhood cut off after a mudslide in morgan

pill. the slide took out the only drivable road west of downtown morgan hill. if the neighborhood needs to be evacuated they can use a four mile trail on top of the ridge. >> rough for neighbors because of a fire. it happened at a three-story building around 3:30. most of the people in the 30-unit building evacuated but firefighters had to break down the doors of those who didn't. one person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. >> revealing testimony is expected in the barry bonds trial. the def will cross-examine marvin bernard. jason giambi testified that bonds personal trainer greg

anderson sent him steroids in 2002. anderson sent instructions on when to use them. he has admitted to using tear roadways. stan conte says this bonds gained significant weight and he noticed acne cars across his back and shoulder. >> the trial of the two men accused of willing chauncey bail i will continue on monday. when the case resumes confessed killer will be back on the stand. broussard has testified that bay ordered him to kill bailey to stop a piece about theicry from being pubbished. >> yesterday, they found him guilty of attempted murder for

trying to blow up the high school. the jury has to desfid he was 18 at the type of the attack. jurors return monday on that. >> we've got an update on the weekend bombing. the 85-year-old man injured is getting better but still in the hospital. his right pinky finger was partly blown off when a bomb exploded on sunday. his arm, side and leg were also burned. police are working to try to find the person who planted that. >> a disturbing case for the oakland police. a girl says she was sexually assaulted. she claims it happened around midnight close to the east mont shopping center. the teen says three men abducted her, drove her to a second location where she was afaulted. they were driving a blue lexus. a reward is being offered for information leading to arrest.

the west. what's happening is this ridge is building in. it's getting stronger. you can see it's not positioned over the bay area. we head through tomorrow it's going to be right over us. that's going to dry the winds. that's going to change our pattern significantly. it's also going to make for pridie conditions. creating a tight pressure gradient. 50 in oakland, 51 in san jose. grab something light to put over your arms as you head out the door. something you can take off. 78 by noon in napa. we'll let you know what your highs are supposed to be. we're talking about the 80s. right now your drive with mike inouye. >> good morning. we'll take you to san francisco for an update on the fire. they are just arriving so i'm not too oriented. we know we're near seventh and

brennen. seventh and brennen the intersection, there were earlier closures, i'm sorting things out f. this has a closure there you see some ladders and structure fire, looks like an instrumental area we'll have an issue for folks over to 101 from the south up to 101 might be an issue. best off heading to fourth. this is from our chopper. over seventh and brennen. a lot of fire activity. a number of trucks. we saw that. then we're looking at the maze and the approach. a footh drive approaching the bay bridge. in spots like antioch and almost. speeds in the 20s and 30s. we'll see if that sticks around. sticking around and building here is westbound 580 coming through livermore.

we'll have more on that. >> well, this morning, a marin county mom is in hot water after she was arrested for being home while her teenage son threw a rowdy party. deputies say they found 57-year-old carolyn asleep in her home while 60 teens were down stairs partying with alcohol. deputies thought she was drunk and arrested her on suspicion of child endangerment being under the influence of a controlled substance and violating probation. but her lawyer says she wasn't drunk, and didn't condone the party. >> debilitating illness, had some prescription medication, went to sleep and her son who is only supposed to have one or two friends over ultimately ended up with a big party. >> the sheriff's office says or served her with a civil summons for allegedly violating the social host ordinance that

imposes fines on adult host who is host teenage drinking parties. >> oakland's police chief is here to stay in his first media briefing in months anthony battings says his quest for a new job is over. his commitment was called into question when it was revealed he was a finalist for san jose chief. that went to chris moore. during the briefing batts dispelled rumors he and the mayor are clashing. >> we're getting word the supreme court is ready to block a massive sex discrimination lawsuit against walmart, the suit claiming that walmart stores favor men over women in pay and promotion. billions are at stake. a ruling for walmart could make it harder for others to bring class action claims against large employers. two plaintiffs are from the bay area. >> new information about the safety record of a refinery that caught fire yesterday and we now

know that the refinery has been fined ten times since october. the city manager says it's too early to link the company's record of leagues with ned's fire. and injured one employee. firefighters know what caused the fire, equipment failure that caused the release of hydrocarbons. the refinery is used to purify used oil to be used again. experts say the fire did not pose a health risk to people nearby. >> looking forward to a really nice day. great temperatures. >> it's going to be gorgeous. it's already nice. i poked my head out. a little chilly. high pressure is building in. you can see clouds arcing up and around that ridge of pressure. look at this. our clouds shoot up, that's an indication that this ridge is getting stronger and closer to

the bay area. we're going to tack on almost 10 degrees to your highs yesterday. maybe 5 as we head through the peak strength of that ridge. low pressure is going to spill clouds in like yesterday, filtered sunshine at times and breezy conditions. that might help you out later on today especially if you work out in the sun. 47 degrees right now in livermore. the east bay is going to be one of the warmest areas. the east bay and the north bay in mid-80s. i'm going 90 tomorrow. 50 in novato. 50 in san mateo. this is the time we see the separation between the wind and the coast. peninsula temperatures are mostly from mid-70s to upper 70s tomorrow. here is the forecast for today. 80 in san jose, 76 in oakland, and 84 degrees up in santa rosa. and the seven-day forecast just gets better.

welcome back. live look outside this morning over the south bay. looks quiet by the shark tank. certainly not the case in san francisco this morning. a second fire already reported there. it could affect your morning commute. let's check with mike. >> this is we'll take to you the maps, our second fire of the morning on seventh and brennen between 280 and the 101/80 interchange. this may affect folks heading to the bay bridge. looks like they may be moving. they were over the scene. saw that intersection closed. that would affect you getting to the area.

use fifth on to the bay bridge. we'll take you out to the maps again. sorry out to a live shot of the bay bridge. we have a smooth drive over there from oakland and no major issues. we're following the second fire in san francisco. christie should arrive shortly. 880, the build-up of the volume of traffic is the concern. general slowing in antioch and livermore. coliseum, a smooth drive north. southbound side, look at all of the headlights. a sudden build and i'm checking the reports. no major issues for the nimitz, we're following. that i got a report of a truck stuck in the south bay. i don't know why there is mud but this might affect i-85 and el camino in the south bay. live look past the coliseum. if we have another live shot. over to lawyer. >> thank you very much. we'll check back. perhaps a tenderloin wouldn't be an under belly of a name if it

wasn't a meaty name. that's what peta is saying to the mayor of san francisco. the group people for the ethical treatment of animals wants to change the name of the tenderloin neighborhood to tempe. and others include granola flats and satan's lair. that is saitain, which is wheat gluten. peta says the name the tenderloin calls to mind vice and corruption and is holding the neighborhood back from improvi improving. the bay area's city, san jose council approved an ordinance changing leash laws, prompt bid the 2009 death of a woman who became tangled in a leash. under the leash law, leashes must be six feet on city trails and owners and pets required to move to the right of the trail. first time violators get a

you can enter details about your ticket and how you think it's unfair. this is not run by the city. but the idea is to coalate and gather certain situations or maybe certain officers so maybe we could see a pattern. >> interesting. thank you, scott. we want to check in with christie smith at the scene of that second fire in san francisco at seventh and brennen. >> reporter: good morning. it's a busy morning for san francisco firefighters. they had just knocked down a fire across town when this fire broke out here south of market, seventh and brannen streets at oscar's photo lab. neighbors say that this business has been here for at least 20 years. firefighters are telling me the damage to this two-story building is mostly in the year.

this broke out and took about 25 minutes to knock down a. single aparm. there is an apartment upstairs. one man who lives there got out okay. he has a soda flavoring business there is that he is concerned about. firefighters tell me there is moderate damage to the building at this point they are still looking for a cause and taking burnt debris out of the front door of the building. best advice if you can avoid seventh and brannen. you should because there are several fire trucks and san francisco police directing traffic. that's what we have reporting live, christie smith. >> thanks for hustling. coming up on today in the bay. santa cruz declares a state of emergency. we'll have a live report coming

it's 6:28 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. brent is off this morning. scott mcgrew will rejoin me but right now let's check that great looking forecast with christina. >> good morning. i don't know about you but i love the warmer weather. it opens up a new wardrobe for many of us women. and today you will get to wear those short sleeves if you want, maybe a tank top up in the north bay. temperatures now are in the 50s and mid-40s. it's mild out there, you'll probably need something to cover up with. chilly in livermore, 47. but we're warming into the 70s and the 80s today. we're going to break down the numbers coming up. first and foremost, a serious situation on the streets of san francisco. >> good morning. as christie smith has arrived on the scene she'll give us more. the big issue is the traffic impact over toward the bay bridge. a live shot out there. if our chopper is on the scene, firefighters still on scene as well as a closure for seventh and brannen because of all of the activity and the trucks in

the area. seventh would take folks south from that area over to 101 and interstate 80. use fifth instead. coming over from oakland seeing the build-up because the metering lights are on. getting out of the city use fifth on the lower deck. the upper deck to slow the approach has started. >> the fire, i want to check back with christie smith on the scene of that second fire in san francisco. it's close to seventh and brannen. what are you hearing about it? >> reporter: we're going to have to -- >> christie, we can't hear you. we'll check back with you. we will. that is happening at photo lab now in san francisco so likely avoid that area if you are close to it. >> a disturbing find in a livermore neighborhood. police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a woman's body on kingsbury drive. she was found around 3:30

yesterday afternoon. police are treating it as a suspicious death. >> we've got the bugs worked out. check in again with christie smith live at the fire in san francisco at seventh and brannen. what's going on? >> reporter: good morning. since we last checked in what we're seeing firefighters doing is heading up the ladder that you see in front of the business there. they are heading toward the back. once they get on the roof where the battalion chief told me most of the damage is to this two-story building. this has been a busy morning for san francisco firefighters. they had an apartment fire in the sunset overnight and then right after they got that knocked down this one started about 5:25 this morning. they are telling me it took about 25 minutes. this is at oscar's photo lab. the business closed at the time. i took a walk over and the front of the building is pretty

blackened, it's moderate damage. upstair there is is an apartment unit. one person was home sleeping. he's okay. he was able to get out but not able to tell them much about what went on with this fire. the neighbors tell us that this business has been here for maybe 20, 25 years, so quite established. firefighters say they don't know what caused it but what they are looking into now. best advice, if you can avoid the area do because it's completely blocked up with all of the fire trucks and police units. that's what we have. live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 6:32 now. train service running normal at an east bay amtrak station after a bomb scare shut it down for two hours. it got a report of a bomb on

board a train schedule forward bakersfield. officers evacuated the station late tuesday afternoon. officials are not sure who reported the threat. they continue their investigation. san francisco police arrested a man for making a false bomb threat near city hall. the man apparently left a backpack and told an employee there was a bomb inside. the man was booked on charges of making a follows report of a bomb and suspicion of a terrorist athreat. >> mostly clear skies but one neighborhood is dealing with an aftermath of last week's wild weather. marla is live where some homes are on the brink of a landslide. homeowners are concerned there could be a gas leak. officials are saying no. >> reporter: that's right. we're off almaden road in the

almaden valley. it's a deadend hillside street. five to 10 homes on this street. this is what neighbors say is a ruptured exposed gas line. pg&e says it is not. one woman who lives up here, she lived her for decades and she's not going to take chances. this has been an ongoing problem, pg&e has been called out several times. they were called out last night a couple times. each time they told the people this is not a gas line but a water line so they deemed the area safe. the whom lived here since the 70s is convinced it's a gas leak. that's not oronly problem. she is fearful after land slide threatening her family. she checked into a hotel. >> the earth is dropping away. i have trees falling on my roof,

i cannot get up my road. i had a fire last night at 2:00 in the morning. the sek one from the power lines and it ripped the neutral wire out. >> no one is taking responsibility. crews have checked out the trees and the land slide issue it's fine but then of course there's that needs to be addressed. laura. >> a lot to look into. thank you. >> all of the land slides from recent rain creating problems. they don't want what happened to them to happen to you. dozens packed the chambers, many of them own homes on car son street right in the path of what is the now called the carson slide zone. three homes in san pablo has been yellow tagginged. if you might be buying a house

in a slight zone you need do your home work. >> i'll ask questions to the neighbors. how is this house. how long have you lived here. things of that nature. then i'll request the seller, banks excluded, that they cad what's called a natural hazards disclosure report. >> if a buyer is concern hire a soil engineer. if they don't you might be buying a home in a slide zone and not know it. >> santa cruz county supervisors declared a local state of emergency. flash floods, mudslides and the tsunami caused more damage than the county can handle. there is $8 million of damage. roughly 10 million in capitola. >> the weather ahead looks pretty good. christina joins us with that.

mike inouye is watching the roadways for you. >> good morning. or what's happening off the roadway clausing a closure for el camino real on 85 is closed now because of a tractor-trailer. it stuck in the dirt. still the speeds are moving again. this is in the southbound 85. you can get on further to the north. grant road, or two 37. the build-up of volume but not a big deal. 22 minutes slow into and through until you get to pleasanton. the approach to the bay bridge close to 60 including the eastco. a live look out there shows you how things are shaping up into the city. if you get out into the lower deck you use fifth street because that seventh crete is blocked due to the fire. >> pretty sun rise.

>> welcome back to you taking a live look. it's going to be a beautiful day across the bay area. finally relief from all of the rain from last week. enjoy the flowers and the weather. 6:50. the brooklyn school district is meeting to find ways to make one of the high schools safer. it will go over a report on crimes on the campus of berkeley high school. an official with the juvenile division says armed robbery is rampant and students bring weapons to school. there have been six gun-related incidents since the school year started including a shooting death on campus. the district is thinking about installing metal detectors and searching lockers and issuing student i.d. badges. >> 6:51. let's take a look at the morning commute. >> good morning. the big impact is you get out of the city is because of that fire

get to that intersection. if you come east, take over toward 23 swrefrn the roads are accessible. back to you. >> 6:52. 30 years ago today, president reagan survived an assassination attempt. john hinckley jr. shot the president and three other people. hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity. he is still 18 mental institution. james brady who was press secretary at the time suffered a shot to the head and was paralyzed. he will lobby for stronger gun control legislation today. >> san francisco leaders voted to help fund candidates running for city office despite a growing budget deficit. in a 6-5 vote the board allocated $1.3 million in the public financing program. opponents say there is no need in light of major cuts throughout the city.

supporters say it's necessary for this wof's mayoral race and also the following year. san francisco is facing $380 million in deficit. governor brown says he's done with trying to negotiate with republicans over the state budget. he says he's speaking directly to voters. democrats say a special election in june is most likely off the table. that special election would have let voters decide whether to accept and increase tachs on the growing budget deficit. the governor blames a list of republican demands for slowing the talks but republicans blame it on democrats and public employee unions. >> good news for people who have been nascar fans. you might be able to be close to the action after they are gone. the daytona international speedway built a place to store people's actions. they have been getting a lot of

requests who want their ashes on the track or buried near it. >> this is where they have their memories, they form that bond with the daytona 500. they spend a lot of time here. >> the florida legislature has yet to approve the plan. >> george clooney is expected to take the stand in the trial for the italian premiere accused of paying for sex with a 17-year-old girl. the girl told investigators that clooney and his girlfriend were at one of the premiere's sex parties that berlusconi has called bunga bunga parties. the defense is calling clooney to the stand. they think he will say he was never at the party. our producer is so thrilled that i said that. >> we got all kinds of things. the planet, just a few minutes ago we got the first pictures from mercury.

>> some guys made this fake movie trailer and posted it on youtube. the main story line seems to be that the hero is introduced to the angry birds but has a moral dilemma when using the birds to attack the pigs and things are not as they seem. i got the latest jobs report from the private agency who looks at jobs. >> good news, yes. that's got the dow up about 55 points. that's been our one continue spot is this recovery in actual employment. northern skaxt doing fairly well. the nation not doing well. this is good news. >> somebody to keep tabs on. thank you very much. 6:57. i want to thank you for joining us. i'll be back with a local update in about a half hour.
