the bay bridge this morning. it is going to be a relatively hot one. today is thursday, the last day of march, the 31st, "today in the bay." good morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm brent cannon. we want to get you started. we are checking the forecast with christina. it could be piping hot. >> piping hot. glad to have the cannons back together this morning. we have the 50s and 60s this morning. 63 degrees in san francisco. there are a couple days last week where we didn't break 60 degrees. we are starting out warm. an indication of just how warm it will be later on today. take a look at this, the 90s. 90 for napa, santa rosa and gilroy. maybe 79 in san francisco today. we'll let you know how much longer the warm weather will last and how many records we are anticipated to break today. but first, you got to get to

work on time. how does it look out there, mike? christina, all right, except for the maze, which is a big concern. getting off the lower deck and the bay bridge, reports of a stalled truck there in the hov lane making the transition to southbound 880. in a live shot we show activity getting off the 880 overcrossing heading in the westbound direction. we are checking with chp to let you know what's going on, but so far folks are held up at the overcrossing there. new this morning, a mud slide is blocking one peninsula city's roadway after last week's heavy storms. bob redell is live in hillsboro this morning with an update. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. this is what happened starting this past saturday. you can see the work -- there's still a lot of work that needs to be done. we are on wood bridge road high above hillsboro in san mateo county. and this started off as a crack around some time saturday afternoon. this is when we were having a lot of the saturation with the

ground. you can see that this crack actually turned into a minor landslide sweeping out one lane of this road here. as a result, they have had to put steel flanks in here to shore it up. fortunately because of the warm weather we are experiencing, the workers who are responsible for fixing this don't have to worry about there being more deterioration. that would be the idea of this, at least. part of this did expose a two-inch gas line and a six-inch water line. there was no rupture of either of those lines, but that could explain why reason it is taking longer for the road to be fixed and shored back up. the other issue is wood bridge road is a very local road. this is just a home to people who live up here, it is not necessarily a main thoroughfare. so farce the traffic impact, this is only going to affect the few people who live up here who have been detoured because this section of roadway, maybe 100

yards or so, has been shut down to local traffic. but the idea is this should be mix fixed within a few days at a cost of $50,000 to $70,000. like i said, with the warm weather coming in, this is good news for the worker who is don't have to worry about the further deterioration of this roadway. thank you, bob. >> a person in the east bay hospital this morning, another one dead after a pair of shootings in north richmond. one happened on third street and pennsylvania avenue yesterday night. police don't have very many details. an east bay man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for sex crimes against six female relatives. sign zion durtrow was charged for five cases of rape. some of the victims were as young as 4 years old. prosecutors say his wife helped handpick the young victims.

she pleaded no contest to the charges and will spend ten years in prison. a south bay jury will be beginning deliberations in a highly polarizing rape case. the jury has to decide whether to award millions of dollars to a young woman who claims she was gang-rapped by deanza baseball players back in 2007. she allegedly suffers from insomnia and suicidal thoughts now, but one of the lawyers for the baseball players says the woman is on a mission for millions and argues she asked for the sex. lawyers say she was 17 at the time. she was at a party and had been drinking when she was allegedly gang-rapped during a house party in san jose. three members of the de anza soccer team burst into the room and saw several men engaged in sexual acts with the unconscious girl and they rescued her. that case was never tried in a criminal court. four men who say they were molested by a humbolt county

priest have dropped their suit. they will now file a new suit against the archdiocese of dublin, ireland. a 2009 report by the irish government found the santa rosa bishop accepted mcbee even though he had been treated. mcbee is in jail awaiting extradition to ireland to face charges of molesting six boys in the 1970s. congress mccord's police department is back in hot water this morning a few months after settling a gender discrimination suit. a female officer has a new suit now claiming sexual harassment against the department and its highest ranking female officer. the woman says that the officer made sexual comments, came from behind and hugged and kissed her. this is the fifth sexual harassment discrimination or

retribution suit filed against the department in the past four years. the state supreme court is denying an appeal by a woman convicted of killing her psychotherapist husband during a divorce. susan polk says she stabbed her husband in 2002 because she claims he was abusive during their marriage. polk acted as her own lawyer during the trial and accused the judge, the prosecutor and jurors of misconduct. a state appeals court upheld her conviction in december. yesterday the state supreme court unanimously decided not to review the case. some of the people who will be hardest hit by the governor's stalled budget talks are not old enough to vote. state lawmakers say they will slash $6 billion in k-12 education spending now that the governor's talks with the republicans have broken down. to put it in perspective, each student will be allotted $1,000 less than they get right now. the governor had been in talks with republicans to put a tax

extension measure up for a vote in june. governor brown now says he may put the tax extensions on the ballot this fall. teachers are doing what they can to help the mount diablo school district balance their budget. the union agreed to take three furlough days in may. union leadership chose the furlough days in order to keep library, music and physical preparation periods for elementary schoolteachers. the school board will vote to approve the contract next month. so today we begin a new season of torture, opening day on the road in l.a. >> marla tellez is live at at&t park. that's because yesterday you got to have fun with the giants players before they left to l.a. and you get to share a little bit of their insight perspective today. >> reporter: tough work, guys. somebody has to do it, though. might as well be me. opening season is happening at at&t park today. for now i'm the only one out here wearing my orange and

black. we have willie mays keeping an eye on me out here, of course. now yesterday the way coach bruce bocce told reporters the way he's looking at the situation, it is a bit disappointing to open in l.a., but it is just kind of the way the schedule goes. it is a good attitude to go. i was lucky enough to be in the dugout and on the field yesterday in the final game of the bridge series. the giants beat the a's 2-1, by the way. the fans showed up early to the day game. some fortunate enough to snag an autograph from tim lincecum. i caught up with some of the players including relief pitchers jeremy afots and tony romo. he says he switches out his glove throughout the season. >> two or three gloves throughout the season. >> reporter: just to keep it fresh? >> just depend on how well i'm doing. do well, stay with one glove.

i said it was coach bruce bocce, forgive me. >> we forgive you. it should be a great day for opening day. they are talking about temperatures in l.a. near the 90s. is that right? >> that's right. they wish they had opening day here, but we are going to have to wait a little bit longer. good news for us because we are going to snag that wilson interview she didn't get yesterday. these are the records from yesterday. 86 degrees up in napa. we hit santa rosa's new record, 85 degrees. 83 in oakland. 82 degrees in downtown san francisco. even mountain view hit 79 degrees. add five to ten degrees to where we ended up yesterday. that's what we are expecting for today. record shattering temperatures. high pressure at its maximum strength right now. you can see all the clouds arcing up and around this big ridge, which is going to drive

some pretty strong offshore winds today. those winds will be able to warm up as they push from land to sea. and those winds are what are really going to warm us up. 57 degrees right now in livermore. we are at 63 in san francisco. now, mike, i was able to walk out of the house with a jacket today. i don't know about you. that probably means you don't need the heater this morning driving, right? probably not. some older friend of mine had to turn on the car to cool the engine, but they have gotten new cars since then. good news, the truck is no longer blocking the hov lanes here. looking at the toll plaza, we have one of the lanes of the flyover coming off the 880 overcrossing over towards the toll plaza blocked. there's a rig there reportedly pulling an excavator on the back of the trailer. the flashing lights, you can't make out the rig, but that's what is going on. folks are making their way past the area, but approaching the toll plaza, keep in mind that maybe by the time you get to the

parents are fighting a plan to build a cell phone tower on the leland high school football field next to bret hart middle school. parents are worried their kids will be exposed to harmful radiation, but the district needs the money. t-mobile will pay san jose unified schools $2,000 per month for that tower. fears of inflation are leading a major retailer to take steps to protect consumers. we are life at cnbc hid headquarters with that news and more news before the bell. >> reporter: futures are mixed as wall street ends the first quarter today. stocks ended up yesterday just

shy of their highs for the year, but still on light volume. the markets are posed to close out the best first quarter since the tech bubble in the late '90s. asia was mostly higher with europe in positive territory this morning. we get data today on new filings for unemployment and manufacturing orders. the dow rising 71 points on wednesday to 12,350. the nasdaq adding 19 to 2776. wal-mart's u.s. chief is warning consumers may face serious inflation for clothing, food and other items in the months ahead. bill simon tells "usa today" the retailer giant is working to minimize the impact of cost increases. he believe's walmart's low-cost business model will be better than the competition. and they predict prices will rise for all retailers due to oil prices later this summer. and hyundai will quit offering the take back your car

degrees is your forecasted high. it shouldn't be hard to hit. after all, yesterday, we hit 84 degrees in santa rosa. napa at 86 degrees. we are starting out five to ten degrees warmer than we were at this time yesterday. we'll go ahead and show you the seven-day outlook and talk about the sierra snow pack. we did receive the results. the results are in, and it is good news. 83 degrees on friday. look at the drop off here. saturday, 59. a 20% chance for showers. the best time for showers is saturday night into sunday. sunday is the day for outdoor plans. all right. we'll get to the video. this speaks for itself. the survey is complete. we are at 165% of normal when it comes to our sierra snow pack. and we have not seen levels like that since 1995. so if you want to head up to the sierra nevada this weekend, i think that you should do so because a lot of the snow will

welcome back. 5:21 right now. the shark tank is still thinking about hockey although the weather is more like baseball weather. we'll get to that throughout the course of the morning. the mayor is unveiling a new plan to help you get around during the yacht race. a new streetcar line will run from fisherman's wharf to the caltrans station to shuttle spectators to and from the event. the mayor wants the area to be bicycle and pedestrian-friendly. more than 2 million spectators are expected to watch the race as they start in 2012. they are going to end with a final match-up in september of 2013. right now we want to check in with mike right now to get a look at your thursday morning commute this morning. >> good morning, brent. no yacht racing going on here because land-locked livermore, but we still have a nice flow of traffic. that's a 14-minute drive out of the altamont pass. a little dip in the speeds closer to 60 overall, where you should be through this area.

680, a nice drive off the dur lynn interchange into sunol. northbound at sheridan road we have a couple reports of a water tank or two rolling around here in the southbound direction. that's the way gravity would take it heading up the hill into the area. watch for that, so far no traffic break scheduled, but i'll watch for developments. heading up out of the southbound, it could be an issue for northbound 680. the yellow sensors are popping up for eastbound 237, but they typically pop up now. i have to make sure we are going to clear those out, i think you can. the tolle interchange project could be happening because of construction projects going on here. heading up off of 880 towards the bay bridge, we have the rig still clearing from the lanes. there you see the flashing lights at the end of the overcrossing, if you are using that out of oakland over to the bay bridge toll plaza, one of the lanes is blocked by

basically the big rig and the drainage it has over there. back to you guys. all right. thank you very much. the first woman to run for vice president of the united states for a major political party will be laid to rest later today. we are talking about geraldine ferraro. she died at the age of 75 on saturday after a long battle with bone marrow cancer. she captured the spotlight in 1984 when democratic presidential candidate walter mondale mom international airported her to be his running mate. right now japan's nuclear safety agency is looking into a report that high levels of radiation were found in a village 25 miles from japan's crippled nuclear power plant. a nuclear safety spokesperson says most residents have left the village but about 100 people chose to stay. they say this does not pose an immediate danger to human health. an evacuation recommendation is done to prevent long-term

this morning, you don't need the jacket. today you'll want to keep yourself cool as temperatures will be in the 90s. these are conditions we have not had around here for quite some time. make sure you are prepared. we'll let you know how much longer it will last, but first mike inouye is keeping an eye on the situation in oakland for you this morning. good morning, christina. we have word of a fire-breaking out in oakland. 1705 48th avenue, specifically. that's just off international boulevard. it will make things more complicated. christie smith heads to the scene, but there are downed power lines in the area to complicate things in addition to the fire-related activity between 580 and 880. again, it is close to international boulevard off 48th avenue. we'll continue to follow that as i follow a big rig stalled on the 880 overcrossing approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. i'll give you the latest in a report coming up. a pleasanton family is remembering their loved one killed in afghanistan. 23-year-old army specialist

jamison linscog died outside of kabul on tuesday after a roadside bomb exploded. he is the first combat death for pleasanton since the beginning of the afghanistan conflicts. e he was a technic with the airborne division survived by his parents and brother and sister. another case in san francisco is being dropped this morning after more allegations of illegal police searches. public defenders office just released more surveillance video allegedly showing undercover san francisco police officers entering an apartment in the richmond district by following a car into the parking garage. the public defenders say the officers didn't identify themselves at police and didn't have the right to search the apartment where they did find four pounds of pot. the public defenders office say these searches are a widespread problem at the police department already dealing with other allegations of illegal searches in the tenderloin. this morning the corruption

scandal against east bay police officers is widening. several antioch officers are now the target of a lawsuit filed by five people arrested by the central contra costa narcotics enforcement team. the attorney who filed the institute says his clients were searched illegally and the property was stolen during raids in antioch. the attorneys released this new video claiming it shows an offer redirecting a surveillance camera. the suit claims officers seized cash, guns and other items never returned, even after the charges were dropped. antioch's city manager disputes that claim. uc berkeley is following up on low levels of radiation found in our milk. nuclear engineer kai vetters says we should not be alarmed. the levels are not harmful to humans. he says radiation is everywhere in our environment. but last week they did find trace amounts of radiation from japan in rainwater and scientists are not surprised to find it in milk as well.

>> we bought milk from the neighborhood store here, generic milk, and we decided to measure the levels. and last night we did see a small amount of iodine 131 in our milk. >> trace levels of radiation have been discovered in our tap water. scientists will continue to keep a close watch on the migration of the radiation from japan to here. a number of bay area cities struggling to recover this morning after a series of slides. in mountain view at least three homes in the sahara mobile home village park are on the verge of sliding into steven's creek. this is near el camino and highway 85. the land below the homes washed away during the recent rain we had. property managers say they have been telling the valley water district for years about erosion concerns. the utility says it cannot do anything as it is private property. meantime, in hercules the red cross is offering help to

those impacted from the landslides there. the red cross is offering shelter, supplies and health services. the victims should call the number on your screen, 888-443-5722. meantime, in morgan hill more than 50 families still cut off because of a mud slide on crow road. a 97-year-old woman suffered a possibly heart attack there last night. a volunteer firefighter who lived in the area carved a path on the blocked road to try to get her out. she is recovering this morning. well, part of highway 101 in humbolt county is closed this morning. a number of trees were brought down near the town of gar dberville. the alternate road is i-5. >> a lot of trouble there. glad we are drying out. the giants will begin

defending their world series championship, but they have to do it in l.a. tonight against the did jers did jers. >> marla tellez is live where she spoke with the players yesterday before they left town. >> reporter: good morning, laura and brent. it is a let down for giants' fans to kickoff the season tonight in l.a., but i can tell you plenty of fans showed up here yesterday sporting their orange and black as i am this morning to root them on during the final game of the bay bridge series yesterday. i was one of those fans. gorgeous weather for the 12:45 day game against the oakland a's. the giants beat the a's 2-1, by the way. the players in good spirits looking forward to defending the world series title. fans showed up early to watch the players warm up, some fortunate enough to snag an autograph from tim lincecum and andre soris. i was able to snag interviews with sergio romo. he told me why it is so much fun

disabled truck blocking one of the lanes coming off the 880 overcrossing that just cleared in the last few minutes. i saw the truck and its escort leave the area. it sounds like all lanes are blocked approaching the toll plaza. that's good news approaching 6:. 3:39 right now. folks getting back to the earlier issue, the fire going on at 1705 48th avenue off international boulevard. the fire is progressing. christie smith will give us the update as she arrives on the scene there shortly. we have downed wires in the area as well. avoid the 1700 block of 48th avenue through the area. it is not affecting 880 or 580. it will affect your axis of 48th. just use another exit a block or two over. we have a truck fire reported on the shoulder of north flint road. there were some flames, so we'll watch for activity there opposite of your main commute. thank you very much. 5:39 right now. the u.s. says it is backing off, but it is still making moves in libya.

back to you. thank you, mike. the disaster japan is raising questions about the safety of nuclear plants in the united states. a former plant manager at the nuclear plant south of los angeles says he was fired for being a whistleblower. he is now suing southern california edison for wrongful termination. he says employees complained about safety-related issues like worker fatigue and excessive overtime, which could compromise safety. the former manager says his bosses told him not to address those complaints. hey, some of the best hospitals in the nation are right here in the bay area according to a new report in u.s. news and world report. the study ranked uc san francisco's medical center in the top ten in nine categories. it is in the top five in diabetes and end co krin olg, neurology and neurosurgery. it is the eighth best hospital in the county for treating cancer.
