days but it is an absolutely beautiful sight, the capital of new hampshire here in concord. the trees are all flocked. there lies the problem because of the fact that you've got a very heavy, wet snow as would typically be the case, about 32 degrees with this snow coming down, so that weight is going to mean power outages as we go on in time. you can kind of bend over here, grab some of the snow and you can see the kind of water content that we have in this. there's a lot of water in through here and occasionally it just makes its way on out of that snow. that's not the case there but believe me there is a lot of water and weight to this snow sticking to everything. we're expecting as much as a foot across the mountains. the storm will become a windy one, too, and once the wind kicks in the weight of the snow that didn't cause the power outages, the wind may do us all in through here. snow should end in the big cities and once again the mountains should benefit from this as the wonderful skiing season here in new england continues. by the way, matt, as we get into tuesday, there is a forecast for severe thunderstorms so the wild swings of spring will make its way this far north as well. back to you. >> all right. jim cantore up in concord, new

hampshire this morning. thank you very much. >> so the question is where is the storm headed? we have the weather channel's maria larosa tracking it for us in for al this morning. sort of good news bad news. the good news obviously it is moving out of some areas but not before really intensifying and wreaking havoc in parts of new england. we do have a number of winter storm warnings you see in blue all the way from massachusetts up through maine and winter weather advisories posted here and there through the poconos and northern new jersey and the hudson valley. here is a look where the storm is now. it's going to continue to deepen off the coast and the snow will continue in parts of upstate new york, through the berkshires, green and white mountains on into maine. the hardest hit area will be here in maine, well over a foot of snow and the shade of blue 3 to 6 inches but it will begin to wrap up later tonight. back to you. >> thank you very much. we'll get your local forecast in a moment. meanwhile, we're talking about the fallout here in the u.s. tied to japan's nuclear crisis. the epa says that traces of radiation have been found in

milk samples from california and washington state. how concerned should you be? nbc's george lewis is here to put it in perspective. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. california is the number one milk producing state in the country so any talk of radiation in the milk supply has people talking, even as the experts say there is no reason to worry. those tiny, barely measurable amounts of radiation were probably ingested by dairy cattle in california and washington state as the wind carried it in from japan. minor amounts of iodine 131 were found in milk from california on march 28th and washington state on march 25th. >> in layman's terms the current amount of i-131 is really a speck of dust. >> so are we seeing anything new this morning? >> reporter: this epa lab in alabama has been keeping a close eye on radiation in the air, the water, and the milk supply. people in charge say the levels are way below anything that would trigger an alert. >> we have seen no cause for

alarm. the very first samples we got in -- >> reporter: and it wasn't the epa but rather state officials who first detected radiation in the california milk supply. while they, too, say it's insignificant, some anti-nuclear power groups say there's ample reason to worry. >> this accident continues our concerns grow for the pasture lands, grazing animals, agricultural products, and fish from the sea. >> reporter: in washington state, consumers have differing views on the potential dangers. >> it sounds bad. i hope it's not getting into school supplies of milk. >> i think a reasonable person would have to conclude that, you know, there's not a lot to worry about. i'll defer to the experts. they say it's not to worry about, i won't worry about it. >> reporter: so far that's what the experts are saying. >> for parents out there, this is a speck of dust. you should not worry about it and the worry, itself, will be far worse than the dust of radiation we're talking about.

>> reporter: bottom line, experts say once again drinking milk is still perfectly safe. to your good health, matt. >> and to yours, george. thank you very much. most importantly, to yours. let's get a check of the other top stories. >> tamron hall is in. >> good morning, everyone. libyan leader moammar gadhafi is defiant today despite two high profile defections and reports that his power base and regime are deteriorating. this as gadhafi's forces push the rag tag rebel army back into eastern libya. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in benghazi. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. in a written statement gadhafi said that the west had started a crusader war between muslims and christians. and as you mentioned, for several days now gadhafi's troops have been pushing back the rebels. well, we've seen that the rebels are trying to hold a defensive line about 120 miles outside of benghazi and for the first time

they are standing and fighting. they are firing rockets and mortars directly at gadhafi's troops even without western air support, so they are doing a little bit better and not retreating as we've seen them doing and just giving up territory day after day. >> all right, richard engel live for us in benghazi. thank you, richard. hundreds of foreigners in ivory coast are fleeing to a french military base as fighting in that country escalates. heavy gunfire and explosions could be heard this morning outside the presidential mansion where supporters of the internationally recognized leader of the ivory coast are making a final push to eject the incumbent who refused to leave office since november. a wisconsin judge will hear testimony today on the hotly contested anti-union bill that has sharply divided state lawmakers. despite initial defiance governor scott walker has agreed now to stop attempts to implement a law cutting union rights. meantime, ohio's governor signed a bill thursday drastically limiting union rights and banning strikes for about

360,000 public workers. the house is expected to vote today on a republican-backed bill that would cut the federal aviation administration budget by about $4 billion and make it more difficult for union workers -- for workers to unionize. the white house has already threatened to veto the bill. two sky divers in southern california collided in mid air thursday afternoon causing them to fall 200 feet to their deaths. no one on the ground was injured in the accident. the accident is under investigation. now to wall street and cnbc. melissa francis is at the stock exchange. job numbers are the top news today? >> that number is the big news of the day, so much of the economy waiting on the job number to improve in order to get better. not stocks though it seems the dow having its best start to the year as this first quarter ends since 1999. a better than 6%. good news if you still have a 401(k). march auto sales also out today. analysts are looking for those to move by 16% versus this time

while al takes some time off. tough weather in florida. tornadoes down there. >> incredible. by mid morning we had a number of tornado warnings sounding in central florida. this is what you're seeing out of tampa, widespread damage, uprooted trees, and even airplanes turned over in an air field. those have obviously moved on. thankfully that part of the world will see much quieter weather during the afternoon hours. this is all associated with our big northeast storm. now on the flip side we've got the spring warmth. we're talking record highs in parts of the south and southwest from texas into southern california, las vegas hitting the 90s today. we are still going to see the cool weather through the northern tier and through the great lakes but we still see some unsettled weather, very unsettled in through the northwest. good morning to you. we are going to see a fantastic-looking weekend. our temperatures today are going to be a little cooler than where we ended up yesterday, but still 81 degrees. not too bad. 62 as we head into your saturday. just a little bit cooler. and then by sunday, that's your

day for outdoor plans this weekend. we are back up to 73 degrees. next week looks good. temperatures are climbing into the upper 60s. pretty much average for this time of the year around the bay area. have a great day. and back to you. >> all right. thank you. there is surprisingly good news this morning about the safety on our roads. the department of transportation reports the traffic fatalities are at their lowest levels in six decades and there's been a huge drop in just the last five years. nbc's tom costello is in potomac, maryland with the details. good morning. we love good news. >> reporter: ann, good morning. absolutely. and these stats are amazing. the fewest deaths since 1949. and we can credit everything from safer, better cars, a dui enforcement, even the roads we drive on. it was the kind of car accident that medics with denver's flight for life know could have a tragic ending. on a mountain highway pat riordan lost control of her subaru, flipped it four times, and went off the road.

once at the hospital they found she had just a concussion, cuts, and bruises. thanks to air bags and seat belts. >> the trooper that came to interview me after the accident said i was undoubtedly alive because of being in that particular car with that kind of protection. >> she's not alone. the government says in 2010 traffic fatalities dropped 3% in just one year and an impressive 25% in five years. for more than 43,000 fatalities in 2005 to under 33,000 last year. at denver health medical center the chief surgeon ernest moore says he sees far fewer head and chest injuries now than at any time over his 35-year career. >> torn thoracic aorta for example the most common cause of death at the scene has been reduced with air bags. >> reporter: experts agree cars have never been safer. they're now built to protect

occupants and absorb the energy of the crash with air bags that protect everyone inside. >> if the box doesn't collapse, the cargo inside is better protected. >> reporter: now required electronic control systems help keep cars on the road while collision avoidance systems keep spacing between cars. >> sir, have you been drinking tonight? >> reporter: meanwhile, dui enforcement has never been tougher with a 0.08 blood alcohol level the law nationwide. police now do not allow drunk drivers to walk away from their car, drive away from their car. they arrest them. people lose their driving privileges. >> reporter: and two more factors. 85% of drivers now wear their seat belts while ems response times and techniques have also improved. now, distracted driving especially texting while driving, remains a very big and growing concern, but, ann, listen to this number. in 1972, 54,000 people died on the nation's roads. now we have 33,000 people who

have died and, yet, we have a population of 100 million more. back to you. >> pretty stunning change. all right. tom costello, thank you so much for that report. it is 7:14. here's matt. the family of the woman who died inside the mansion of august bush iv has now filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the brewing heir. we're in clayton, missouri with details on that. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: hey, matt. good morning to you. around here the busch family is like royalty. not that bush family. b-u-s-c-h as in anheuser-busch the beer makers. the heir to the huge beer fortune lives in a huge, huge mansion about ten minutes' from here. inside the gates of the long, winding driveway apparently august busch iv says he found his girlfriend dead in his bedroom. that was late last year. turns out it was a drug overdose. but now this new lawsuit just filed here in court claims it was all busch's fault. inside the walls of this

sprawling estate august busch iv, the heir to the anheuser-busch fortune, says he made an awful discovery in bed. his 27-year-old girlfriend, adrian martin, was motionless. a worker in the mansion called 911. >> okay. what's the problem? >> this girl is not waking up. >> is she breathing? >> we don't know. >> adrian, a divorced mother raising her 8-year-old son, was dead. authorities found lethal levels of cocaine and the pain killer oxy codone in her system. her ex-husband filed this lawsuit on behalf of their little boy blake accusing august busch of carelessness and negligence inside the house leading to the wrongful death of adrian. the lawsuit doesn't explain how busch was negligent but claims his actions contributed or caused blake alexander martin to suffer loss of comfort, companionship, by his mother, adrian. the lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for blake.

>> it's not like they have to prove that he killed her. he gave her an overdose. they don't have to show that. they can show that he was aware of dangerous drug uses, that he was aware of something happening right in his own bedroom that he took no steps to stop. >> reporter: busch has denied any wrongdoing and prosecutors have decided not to charge him. >> if you had two people sitting in a room doing drugs and one of them overdoses and dies, it doesn't make the other one criminally responsible. >> reporter: august busch iv the former ceo of anheuser-busch and the great grandson of the company's founder was in rehab for depression last year and has a checkered past. in 1983 busch crashed a corvette. his passenger, a 22-year-old woman, died. police found him disoriented six hours later. no charges were ever filed. in 1985, he was accused of trying to run down two detectives during a police chase. he was acquitted. and now a lawsuit blaming him for the death of his latest

girlfriend, adrian martin. >> i wouldn't be surprised if he tries as hard as he can to settle, because the last thing he's going to want is to have all of his dirty laundry dragged out in public. >> reporter: in fact, late last night i spoke with august busch iv's attorney by phone and he told me you can expect a settlement here. this is what he told me, quoting, august busch truly cares about adrian's son and wants him taken care of. matt, no telling when that settlement, if there is one, could happen or how much money busch would end up paying. >> all right. jeff rossen out in missouri for us this morning, thank you very much. it's 18 after the hour. here's ann. >> matt, thanks. on a very different note the search for that missing cobra at the bronx zoo has finally come to an end. so what is next for this popular fang fugitive? nbc's peter alexander has been on the case since it began at the bronx zoo and is here with details. >> reporter: it's worth noting that the bronx zoo finally did catch this thing. how did they do it?

how do you catch a cobra? apparently with a set of tongs and something that looks a little like a golf club. the bronx zoo's famous snake is now safe and so are the rest of us. >> it's alive! >> our not so long national nightmare is over. unlike anaconda or indiana jones, this is the real thing. so here she is, easily the country's most famous egyptian cobra. i mean, really. can you think of another? alive and well and for the moment in quarantine. >> right now she's resting comfortably and secure in the reptile house. >> reporter: after an unauthorized six-day sabatical the elusive 20-inch cobra was found thursday morning coiled in a dark and secluded corner inside the zoo's reptile house just as the zoo director had predicted. >> the key strategy here in recovering this snake was patience. >> reporter: patience and apparently wood shavings that were scented with mice and rats in hopes of luring the baby cobra out of hiding.

so how did the potentially deadly snake sneak out? the zoo is still investigating. still, the staff was clearly relieved. their news release alone gave that away. for a little snake tale the story sure has legs. on late night -- >> found that egyptian cobra that had gone missing from the bronx zoo today. turns out it was in lindsay lohan's purse. >> reporter: and online. in just days the cobra's fake twitter feed attracted more than 200,000 followers with its snake-eyed escapades around the big apple. leaving wall street, these guys make my skin crawl. then on top of the empire state building all of the people look like little mice down there. delicious little mice. and finally -- >> here in the bronx. >> reporter: if you see a bag of peanuts moving around the ground at yankee stadium today just ignore it. it's probably nothing. the snake's followers were disappointed the missing bronx zoo cobra was in zoo all along one tweeted. this snake is the balloon boy of our generation. still, she slithered her way into headlines, on to mugs, even

to the big day. there is a lot of speculation and attention. we heard this sound bite from william saying he's nervous. is that unexpected or maybe self-deprecating humor? >> a bit of both. most grooms are nervous before the wedding day but they aren't getting married in front of billions of people around the world. he's not the most natural public speaker or someone who likes the limelight, but it's par for the course. goodness knows how kate's feeling. >> we are getting a lot of comments. people making a big deal about the fact that he won't be wearing a wedding band after the marriage. is it much ado about nothing? >> some wives are suspicious if their husbands don't want to wear a ring, but everyone will know william is taken. traditionally, royal men wear signet rings but he's opted not to do so. we know william is his own man

back now at 7:41. with actress lindsay lohan back in new york where she was caught on camera hitting the streets -- literally. amy robach has details on this. good morning. >> reporter: that's right, ann. good morning. on thursday, lindsay tweeted that what happened here was all a joke. but the pictures that were taken here at this manhattan club have raised eyebrows and questions about the troubled star.

far from the red carpet, lindsay lohan out late wednesday night with friends in new york city. as the paparazzi snap away, lindsay seems to take a spill, face first outside the motor city bar, cigarette in hand, having a big laugh. less than 24 hours later the pictures were circulating the internet with chatter and speculation about her condition. >> in many ways a picture is worth a thousand words. this gives the impression that lindsay is out of control. >> reporter: with the rumor mill churning lindsay posted on facebook, is it not allowed to slip and fall? i'm always a clklutz. and then saying, a joke can turn into me falling and a story. >> the pictures don't help. >> reporter: three months ago this paparazzi photo got lindsay in deep trouble. she was snapped wearing a necklace she's accused of stealistea stealing from this boutique.

lindsay pled not guilty and plans to fight the charges in court. legal experts say the pics will likely holdle no weight in the upcoming trial. >> the chances of the pictures coming in on the grand theft case are slim to none. they don't show anything either than she's a klutz or may have been out drinking. >> reporter: the mean girls star is on probation stemming from a 2007 dui arrest. she's been in and out of jail and rehab for violating probation. in january, she finished a three-month stint at the betty ford clinic. just weeks ago she spoke about winning her battle against addiction. >> as long as i focus on the one thing i need to put first in my life which is my recovery and stuff. i'm doing good. >> reporter: photos of a stumbling lindsay outside a bar aren't necessarily proof she violated probation but paparazzi pics may be a problem for the star. >> without other evidence the

pictures are useless. if there is other evidence out there -- receipts, witnesses, drinking, they could be powerful. >> reporter: nbc news reached out to lindsay but we didn't hear back. overnight tmz reported that lindsay denied being drunk saying just because i'm out doesn't mean i'm drinking. while she awaits her day in court she did receive good news. prosecutors have announced that they will not seek charges against lindsay for battery against that former staffer at the betty ford clinic. ann, back to you. >> amy, thank you so much. mark garagos is an attorney and christina wanzilak is from full circle intervention. good morning. >> good morning. >> mark, you first. do you see anything in what we are hearing in the reports that would indicate to you increased legal problems for lindsay lohan? >> no, not from the pictures. if there was a term -- and i

don't know if there is. but if there was a term that she's not to be in any place where alcohol is the chief item of sale that could be a problem for the probation. but it will have no effect on the grand theft case. >> all right. do you see that investigators would use this evidence, these photographs to go seek any other evidence or do you think that investigators from, as you understand how the criminal justice system works, will look at this as just photographs to step away from? >> i can't imagine any investigator wasting time unless they wanted a free trip to new york to follow up on something like this. i don't think it has any moment or will give anybody pause to do anything. it seems to me more a story about what did lindsay do this week and she's tripping and falling. i don't think anybody -- judge, d.a. or a defense lawyer will give it much thought at all. >> let me ask you then, christina. you're an addiction specialist.

you have made it a point that you, yourself, have been addicted. when we talk about somebody treated for addiction in this way and seeing what we are seeing this morning, what's your take away? what's your thought about how we should be looking at this? >> well, certainly, just because she fell on the sidewalk doesn't mean she's drinking or not drinking. i can tell you this -- sober or not sober, for somebody new in recovery. for somebody on probation trying to change her image, the decision to go bar hopping late at night wasn't a positive one. for somebody that's changed her life, hadn't had a drink since 21 which is almost 18 consecutive years going to bars is high risk behavior. the truth is, ann, it's asking for trouble. point made. >> in terms of understanding this with compassion because addiction is a disease, often those who are addicted have

back now with a woman who claims she can't close her eyes after plastic surgery gone wrong. fami tamron hall has the story. >> reporter: one particular surgery made her eyes much worse. in august of 2005 marilyn leisz decided to undergo a minor surgical procedure to try to help correct a congenital defect in her eyes and fix scarring from a previous surgery. >> i was concerned about a prior eyelid surgery that left bumps along the crease line, but the original reason was to improve my vision. >> reporter: she decided on dr. paul parkerer to perform the procedure. >> i wasn't told i would have any problems from the surgery at all. as a matter of fact i was told i would have a more overall youthful appearance. >> reporter: instead she said her eyes were worse and she was unable to close them completely. >> i feel my life has been

stolen from me by dr. parkerer's eye surgery. your eyesight affects everything you do. the main thing i'm concerned about is the health and deterioration of my eyes and the possibility of blindness. >> reporter: marilyn decided to sue for negligence arguing that she should have been told she was not a good candidate for the surgery and she was not informed of the possible risks related to it. marilyn and her attorney roy conray believe it was the expert testimony of dr. mary stepanishon that convinced the jury. >> it is my opinion, and i do a lot of this, that this is already a danger sign. i think there is minimal skin to be removed. when a patient says i need this fixed i say you're going to sleep the rest of your life with your eyes open, you will get a corneal ulcer and they will leak out. i'm not taking that risk. >> reporter: jurors awarded

marilyn $115,000 finding that dr. parker deviated from the accepted standard of care for the procedure. the jury also didn't agree with her claim that she wasn't aware of the risks. >> it's a two-way street. surgeons are responsible for giving the reasonable risks of the particular procedure. patients, you know, also should ask questions and make sure they understand. >> reporter: dr. parker's attorney responded in a statement. despite this patient's experience with plastic surgery she denied that she was aware of or informed by any of the doctors of the risks of eyelid surgery. the jury rejected that alleged innocence finding that she was aware of such risks and the evidence overwhelmingly supported the conclusion. immediately after the verdict was read leisz said she was glad for her day in court but said

her eyes will never be the way they were. ann? >> thank you, tamron. marilyn joins us along with her attorney. good morning. >> good morning. >> are you satisfied with the verdict? will the case now proceed? >> i don't believe it can proceed. this is a question for the attorney. >> i think the verdict, the amount fell far short of our expectations. that said, we are gratified that we were able to win. malpractice cases arrivinging out of elective cosmetic surgery are difficult to win. i think to some degree the jury said "a pox on both your houses" that this is somebody who has had more than one plastic surgery. it was the third procedure to the eyes but they wanted to send a message to the doctor as well. >> marilyn, a lot of people are wondering how you cope. you have undergone already, as i understand it, 30 procedures --

painful procedures trying to fix this problem. have they corrected them? >> no. only thing that's happened here is the doctor helped the closure a little bit. she made the eyes smaller and tried to make the closure better for me. there is another alternative available call eyelid skin graft. it's major surgery. there is a lot of risk involved with that. the cosmetic outcome is poor. and the graft failure rate is high. if she goes in and cuts along my eyelash like the surgery is supposed to go and she puts the three centimetres of skin on the eye lid if it doesn't take she has to take it out but you already have a hole in the eye. i could be totally disfigured. then there is a possibility of partial closure because she's had to change the shape of the

eyes. >> i notice that you have a little container of tissues with you at all times. >> yes. >> are you unable to close your eyes completely? >> yes. >> what happens and what are the risks of that? >> i'm always at risk for eye infections, corneal ulcers, glaucoma because of the medication i have to use and blindness. >> how do you sleep at night without being able to close your eyes? >> there is a whole regime from night into day to take care of this. i don't know if you want to hear that. it's rather elaborate. like when i take a shower i have to put gel into my eyes so the water and soap doesn't get into my eyes. by the time the shower is over the gel is washed out. that's how much water gets in my eyes. >> it sounds like a nightmare. are you able to sleep for a period of time? >> well, you have to do things like put a lot of gel in your

knew something was going wrong. what caused the waterworks? his anger or the embarrassment? >> the shock and my responsive anger. often when women end up crying at work what they really want to do is get angry. they feel powerless to do so because they are in a position that's junior to somebody. >> how should a woman, since we are talking mostly about women, take it if they react emotionally and a co-worker says, don't take it personally, it's just business. is that the right approach? >> it's always personal. the fact is in this society we are working 24/7 all the time giving our hearts and blood to our jobs. we want to have value there. we want to have our emotions connected. it brings out the best in us. it's not personal. >> when you do cry it brings out certain emotions in other people. women asked about another woman crying in the workplace say they view that woman as unstable.

a man asked about a woman said he tends to view the woman as unprofessional. that's a big difference. >> a huge difference. women carry the baggage of when we went to work in the '60s, having to man up, act like a man. there is the famous ad, whatever you do, don't let them see you cry. go to the bathroom. with us being 50% of the work force we can step back and change that behavior. >> this happened in my office where a female employee has come in to tell me they are upset about something and started crying. how am i supposed to handle that? do i give that person a hug in the workplace? hand over a tissue? what do i say? >> the important thing to do is acknowledge that something's happening to that person and say, look, let me give you a moment to compose yourself. a tissue is a good thing because it shows compassion. then say, can we address this? don't deny it or it becomes

something that never gets fixed. >> for the woman crying, should she approach the people she cried to and apologize? >> i don't think so. she should use her judgment and if possible say, look, i was overwhelmed for x, y, z yesterday. >> i'm overit you. it is 8:26 right now. jury deliberations are set to begin today in a highly polarizing civil rape case. the jury will be asked to decide whether to award millions of dollars to a young woman who says she was gang raped by members of the college baseball team in 2007. she was 18 at the time. the lawyer says she was drinking, but was too drunk to give consent with the men. three members of the soccer team burst into the room and saw several men engaged in sexual acts with the unconscious g gun.

crippled nuclear facility is now leaking into the underlying ground water. the leaks could have long-term effects on the workers remaining at the facility or eventually seep into the drinking supply. meantime, the japanese government is mulling a takeover of the plant. traffic deaths in the u.s. have plunged to their lowest level in more than 60 years. the transportation department estimates 32,000 people killed on u.s. road last year, down 3% from the year before. the government credits seat belt usage, drunk driving crackdowns and safer vehicles. as mentioned, it is no april fool's joke for many americans waking up to snow this morning. jim cantore is in snowy new hampshire. at least it's pretty. good morning. >> yeah, at least it's pretty. we've done this everywhere, here in april people are sick of it. unless you're a skier. as much as 3 to 6 inches has already fallen. the problem is it's a real, heavy wet snow here. you pick this up and you squeeze

we can really help ourselves. of course we know there is mystery spending but it can add up. >> this is money you spent but you don't know where it went. we lose $1,000 a year to mystery spending. 52% of americans lose $3,000. we spent it on something, don't know where it went. you need to track your spending. be more accountable. there are free programs like mint.com to help do that. >> another mistake you say is not knowing your credit score. it sounds like a bore digging out the credit score. >> this is a number that's looked at not only by lenders but utility companies, landlords and an increasing percentage of employers. 35% of employers look at this score. so it's important that you know. lenders want to know you can pay them back. employers want you focusing on the job, not financial worries. it's important to boost it, especially in the low 600s. >> another mistake is trying to

time the market. isn't that what we all do? >> specifically what's going on with the housing market you have buyers on the sidelines waiting for the market to bottom. price is just one thing to take into consideration. mortgage rates, that's the other big one. they're not bothering with that. not taking into consideration that mortgage rates are on the rise. that could counteract the bottoming of the housing market. even if housing prices fall 5 to 7% this year as many expect them to, rates go on the rise and you lose. >> so you should be researching the loan options. >> it's interesting. there was an analysis that found we are spending twice as much time researching a car purchase as a loan. >> oh. >> crazy. your home is your biggest investment. 31% of consumers are spending two hours or less researching their loan options. about as much time as they spent

researching a vacation. >> okay, mom. research the loan options. >> get a lot of loan quotes. you want the best deal and to save thousands. >> it does add up to thousands. another mistake is to rely on what you call retirement crutches. like? >> you see it specifically with women in retirement, unfortunately. a lot of women rely on their spouses. one in four rely on their husband's pension to get them through their old age. 50% of women rely on social security versus 33% -- >> you call it a crutch. >> you should not rely on these things. 6 of 10 rely on friends and family members for retirement advice. >> what do you say to women who maybe didn't work as much as their husbands? >> you have to take the initiative to self-educate, bring in the help of a professional here. you cannot rely on these financial crutches. nine of ten women will be solely responsible for their finances at some point. we are living longer than men.

and 50% of marriages end in divorce. take a greater initiative. >> top financial adviser or sock money away? >> a financial adviser is one way to go and more women are getting to the point where they are considering that. still, women are considering on that and they should not be. >> now, not having financial goals. >> this is a bad one. >> the number one goal should be about retirement? >> it should be a priority. you want to look at where you want to be five, ten years down the line. do you want to be debt-free, own a home. look at your goals, put a plan in motion and get going. if you don't have financial goals you are much less inclined to save anything. >> the other thing you say is a mistake is to not have an emergency kind of fund. this stops people. you don't know how much is an emergency. you know you can have an emergency or an emergency. how much? >> fewer than 4 of 10 americans have a fully funded emergency account which is crazy.

>> you have a list of things we should look into. the first is serious. mold can create serious health problems. >> sure. mold can trigger allergy symptoms and asthma in some people. it's not something you can easily see. if there is potential mold you want to look for leaks in the bedroom. you definitely need to plug them up, clean the area with bleach. make sure it's not a humid area. mold loves humidity. using a dehumidifier or air conditioner would do the same thing to prevent mold and symptoms associated with it like watery eyes, itchy nose and wheezing. >> if you have the symptoms should you go to the doctor? >> you should. you want to be diagnosed with asthma if that's what you have or allergies. just taking care of mold may not be the whole answer. you may need medication as well. >> all right. dust mites, not bed bugs which we have talked so much about. you say be on the lookout for dust mites. what are they? >> tiny little creatures you can't see. >> you can't see them? >> they're tiny but they feed on

dead skin cells which is what dust consists of. you want to get rid of the dust and the way you do it is using damp cloths, not a dry cloth which redistributes the dust. vacuum with a hepa filter. make sure you don't have much wall to wall carpeting. area rugs or wood floors are better. washing sheets in hot water helps as well. dust mites trigger allergies in some people. >> this is interesting. you also look at pillow and suggest latex pillows. why? what's the difference? >> for some people synthetic foam pillows emit chemicals that can trigger headaches in some people, nausea. that can, of course, affect your ability to get a good night's rest. if you are experiencing those symptoms, try switching to a natural rubber or latex pillow. >> are they comfortable?

cleaned. we dredge in flour, salt and pepper. put them in the saute pan. now i use a combination of butter and olive oil. >> why butter, too? >> it gives it such a wonderful flavor. >> they smell good. >> it's great and it cooks within six minutes' time. three minutes on each side. >> you're using tomatoes for the dish. >> we're starting with garlic and chili peppers. again, i use the combination of canned tomatoes. and my beautiful cherry tomatoes. >> those are seasonal, too. >> very. cook it together for about 20 minutes. can i have my pasta? >> you can. this is already done with olive oil on top. >> put my pasta in and there's basil. >> who's better than that? >> nobody. this is what the finished product looks like. while we are looking at that,

take it away, mr. john. what are we making? >> poached sea bass with spring vegetables. i have had the fish stock. i'm simmering it with tarragon, thyme, olive oil and butter. one of the things when you're poaching sea bass, it's like giving the fish a bath. the reason everyone lines up to get this dish is i basically bathe with the bass. >> that's so hot. >> i'm not hungry now. >> so i cleaned the fish which is good but sometimes the fish pops out at the wrong time. you smell a little -- >> where's anthony? >> now as it's simmering i place the sea bass on top. >> can you use a different fish? >> any type like a snapper, bronzino. i prefer bathing with the

like this. this is our syrup. so we can mix this and set it aside. john, turn it off when it mixes. this is what it looks like. >> perfect. now we are going to make the whipped cream. 40% heavy cream, sugar and vanilla extract. also a little bit more vanilla bean. this is going to whip up nicely. forget the ready-whip. this happens so quickly you can make it fresh every day. it turns into this. >> oh, yeah. >> now we have marinated the strawberries in sugar and honey. >> how long? >> a few hours. >> this is the biscuit. we can either buy it or make it fresh. we start with the syrup sprinkled on top. if you can give me some whipped cream.

jamie, special projects designer, is here to show us how. >> hi, jamie. >> we like how you broke this down. >> tell us what's wrong here. >> number one, major mistake, overcrowding. not only when you cram your clothing in there are your clothes beginning to wrinkle, but you actually shorten the life span of your clothing. because when you put back your clothes, it still has that body oil and perspiration on it, and that's going to contribute to mold, mildew, insects, you name it. so you want to make sure you're airing out your clothes, leaving some space between hangers. >> you usually store what's out of season, probably, right? >> absolutely. but one thing you don't want to do when you store them is put them in airtight plastic. it traps humidity inside the plastic. again, mold and mold do you. same thing with these bags.

don't use these plastic bags. >> i get my dry cleaning back like this, and i put it in my closet, and then when i need it, i peel the plastic off. >> you're actually really damaging your clothing, because these dry cleaner bags are trapping in the dry cleaning chemicals and they can discolor and yellow your clothes. >> that explains it. >> immediately take it out. get rid of those wire hangers while you're at it, too. >> and your shoes, hoda, just thrown down there like that. >> doesn't yours look just like that? >> i have too much stuff. no matter how many times i clean it and give stuff away, it's still too much. >> let's start with the hangers, because i think that's the most important thing, having the right hanger. >> i love flocked hangers because they're thin, so they save space in your closet. they're about a third thinner than a traditional wooden hanger. >> and it's the natural form of
