>> contentious and frustrating and messy as our democracy can sometimes be. i know there isn't a person here who would trade places with any other nation on earth. >> reporter: the president is already planning fundraising trips this month to chicago, los angeles, san francisco and new york, while the republican race is still off to a slower start. >> we're not yet running. we're looking at it carefully. >> i'm not going to make a decision until the end of april. >> i don't think there needs to be a rush still to get out there as a declared candidate. >> i won't be making that decision, i don't think, until some time this summer. >> i think the president forming his committee to raise money will be a wake-up call for republicans to say, i better get in now because i'm starting to lag behind, and that's always dangerous. >> reporter: with a government shutdown looming friday the president worked the phones this weekend giving the leaders of the house and senate a version of the message he delivered last week.

>> if these budget negotiations break down, we could end up having to shut down the government just at a time when the economy is starting to recover. >> reporter: democrats say the two sides have tentatively agreed to slash $33 billion from this year's budget but remain deeply divided over where to cut. >> we have agreed on a number. let's work to get that number done. republican leadership in the house has to make a decision whether they are going to do the right thing for the country or do the right thing for the tea party. >> reporter: republicans say any talk of a deal is premature. >> mr. boehner, the speaker, has indicated that he has not reached an agreement. so has mitch mcconnell, the republican leader. so i think that negotiations continue and they need to continue. >> reporter: and believe it or not this is not the only budget fight, this shutdown looming on friday has to do with this year's budget but we have next year's budget to deal with. tomorrow the republican house budget chair will unveil his

plan for next year's budget with more than $4 trillion in cuts, mat. >> savannah guthrie at the white house, thank you very much. four minutes after the hour. here's ann. >> more important news this morning. southwest airlines cancelled more than 100 more flights as it inspects the fleet after a five-foot hole ripped open on a jet over arizona. just last night, there was another scare for southwest passengers on a flight from oakland to san diego with 142 people on board. the crew reported mechanical problems and the plane was diverted to los angeles. we have tom costello now with the latest on the story. hey, tom, good morning. >> reporter: hi, ann. the ntsb says we should expect boeing to issue an urgent bulletin urging airlines worldwide to check 737-300s for cracks. southwest said cracks were found on two of the planes it took out of service. the texas nstb ntsb says there was a third as well.

19 of the 79 taken out of service were found to have no cracks and are now back in service. >> we found evidence of additional cracks on that airplane. >> reporter: investigators in yuma, arizona, have now removed a large section from the roof of the southwest 737 that made an emergency landing friday night. that piece will go through metallurgy tests in washington but already there are clear signs of pre-existing fracture lines on the aircraft's skin along what's called a lap joint. >> what the issue is that along this particular lap joint it was not known in the industry that this was an area on airplanes of this number of cycles that those lap joints should be inspected. >> reporter: new passenger photos show the five-foot hole that opened up 18 minutes into the flight and the oxygen masks that dropped as the plane lost pressure. f.a.a. records show during a heavy maintenance overhaul in march of last year inspectors found cracks along the fuselage

of this 737-300. a frame crack 867 inches from the nose, another 380 inches from the nose, 500 inches from the nose and many more. but the f.a.a. cautions that's not unusual for a plane that was 14 years old at the time. inspections are conducted to find and repair those cracks. >> some wear and tear on an airplane is perfectly normal. an airplane is constantly pressurized, depressurized and it creates wear and tear over time. >> reporter: southwest issued a statement says it was in compliance with f.a.a. regulation and inspections and, quote, what we saw with flight 812 was a new and unknown issue. but the question for inspectors is whether this is an isolated case or a potentially bigger problem with the fleet. >> i know the f.a.a. is looking at that also very closely to see if they need to mandate additional inspections. >> reporter: meanwhile, thousands of southwest passengers had their travel plans thrown into chaos over the

weekend as the airline cancelled hundreds of flights over two days. >> oh, i think it's excellent that they are checking planes. it's an inconvenience, but i would rather have them check the planes than to let us fly unsafely. >> reporter: southwest is expected to cancel 100 more flights today but hopes to complete the inspections tomorrow. as for the other airlines, delta, united and continental say they don't fly the 737-300 anymore. us airways says it is not affected. ann, back to you. >> tom, thanks so much. once again here's matt. >> thank you very much. let's turn over seas where the u.s. military is taking part in air strikes on libya after agreeing to a last-minute extension request from nato. richard engel is on the front lines outside brega. richard, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. we have heard several loud explosions here in the desert outside brega. fighting in this area is still continuing. as you mentioned, the u.s. has

been continuing to fly the bombing missions but nato officials say as of today sometime that u.s. military role will change and other nato partners, primarily britain and france, will be carrying on those strike missions, as they are called, and the u.s. will shift into a support role refuelling aircraft, collecting intelligence but not attacking gadhafi's forces directly. here on the front lines between the rebels and gadhafi's troops who are 15 miles in that direction the two sides were in a stalemate with neither the rebels nor gadhafi's army strong enough to achieve a decisive victory. >> we have heard about the shift no momentum over the last several days there between gadhafi's forces and the rebels. you talk about a stalemate. is there an indication which side may have momentum now? >> reporter: there is no momentum here. they are bringing in extra troops, creating new weapons. we saw today that the rebels are

taking weapons off of old fighter jets and mounting them on vehicles. they are trying anything they can. but they are still hopeful that defections within tripoli will ultimately end the conflict. they want to hold their ground as long as they can and hope the international community will put more pressure on tripoli and force the regime that gadhafi has built in tripoli to crumble from within. >> richard engel reporting from libya this morning. as always, thank you very much. thomas friedman is a columnist from the new york times and author of "from beirut to jerusalem." nice to see you. >> good to be here. >> the word stalemate isn't what the administration wants to hear. how long do you see this dragging on? >> these regimes look very solid until the end. when they go they go quickly. so it could happen in an hour, in a week or not at all. but it's going to crack from within. i think the thing to keep in mind is in the middle east, i

always like to say that the real story there is always the morning after the morning after. the story in libya is once this regime cracks, once that happens, what fills the void? and i think that's a huge question mark. >> let me get to that in a second. let me stick with the when question. you recently wrote, my gut tells me any kind of decent outcome there will be requiring boots on the ground, either as military help for the rebels to oust gadhafi as we want or as post gadhafi peacekeepers and referees between tribes. those boots cannot be ours. we cannot afford it whether in terms of money, man power energy or attention. i am dubious that our allies can or will handle it with without us. where does that leave us? the president has said no u.s. troops on the ground. can he keep the promise? >> i think he has to. the secretary of defense made that clear. the thing to keep in mind is there are two different states in that part of the world, they

are what i call real countries with long mysteries and big majorities, egypt, tunisia. they went smoothly because it was everybody against dad. now the revolutions are moving out to tribes with flags, states with big sectarian tribal communities. when you take the lid off those states you can unleash a civil war. what we saw in iraq is if you don't have somebody in place on the ground to referee that you could end up with a somalia. >> you urge people not to view it as an isolated case or any of the situations we're seeing. in fact, you think it's important that we view it through the prism of what is iran thinking as they are watching this. are they sensing in our administration strength or weakness? what do you think they are sensing? >> i think two things. obviously they are going to watch what the united states and the west are doing in terms of actually putting boots on the ground. i don't think they are worried right now, but the iranians have a revolution happening inside their country. what the iranians are

benefitting from now is all this instability is raising oil prices. basically the iranian regime has gotten a 20% pay raise since the revolutions have gun. they are looking at the rise in the price of oil to keep their related to the pastor in florida and his small congregation and their burning of the koran. i want to leave that part out of it, but it shows us that afghanistan is still an unsettled country, isn't it? >> what the whole incident shows us, matt, is basically what kind of deep anti-foreign influences still exist in afghanistan. they were triggered in this case by the koran burning. next week they could be triggered by a traffic accident. what's troubling is after all the time and money we spent there you still have huge anti-foreign and to some degree anti-american sentiment that doesn't bode well for the morning after the morning after. >> nice to have you with us,

tom. thanks for your time. >> pleasure. >> let's check on the top stories with natalie at the news desk. >> good morning, everyone. barely a year since the fatal rig blow out and devastating oil spill bp is requesting permission to resume drilling in the gulf of mexico. this comes just a week after president obama discussed decreasing reliance on foreign oil as a hallmark of responsible energy policy. a french team has discovered parts of an air france plane that crashed into the atlantic in 2009 en route to brazil killing all 228 people on board. investigators have yet to find the plane's black boxes to determine the exact cause of the crash. now to wall street. cnbc's amanda drury is at the new york stock exchange. how is it looking? >> one of the standouts is the price of crude oil which has been relentlessly climbing higher and starts at a 2 1/2 year high.

for you and me that means gasoline prices are at $4 a gallon in parts of the united states. in fact, the average price is four cents higher than it was a week ago, 25 cents higher than a month ago. so far the stock markets have managed to grind higher regardless. we'll see if that's the case this week. back to you. >> mandy drury at the new york stock exchange, thank you. highly radioactive water is gushing into the pacific ocean off the coast of japan. gushing into the pacific ocean off the coast of japan. lee cowan is in tokyo with the latest on efforts to contain the leak. lee, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. there is so much radioactive water building up around the plant that engineers have had to prioritize. they are going to pump several tanks of lesser radioactive water directly into the ocean to make room for the really radioactive water, the stuff that's already been leaking into the ocean that they don't know how to stop. this is what the leak looks

like, a column of highly radioactive water pouring into the ocean out of an eight-inch crack in a maintenance pit, a fix so far has been elusive. plan a, filling the pit with concrete, didn't work. plan b, mixing an absorbent powder with newspaper and saw dust to plug the input pipe. that was washed away. now it's onto plan c, trying to trap the water behind an underground curtain. engineers want to deploy what's called a silt fence, similar to the booms used to contain an oil spill. they have never been used to corral radioactive water and engineers aren't sure how effective it will be. with japan scrambling to work out a repair, more marines arrived to help specializing in nuclear emergency response. they won't work at the plant itself but they could help with radioactive monitoring and provide equipment. it's been more than three weeks

since the disaster struck and sunday the massive search effort was officially suspended. the dead who have been found are being sent as far as tokyo for cremation where a steady stream of mourners come to pay their respects, a grim routine with no end in sight. natalie, back to the plant for a moment. engineers tried to drop in a white powder, a dye to act as a trace they hope they can work backward to figure out where this leak is coming from that's contaminating the water. that's the priority. the only thing more important is to keep those reactors cool. unfortunately that involves pumping in more water. natalie? >> not an encouraging situation there in tokyo. lee, thank you. now a story of hope amid the tragedy in japan. a dog adrift on a roof since the earthquake and tsunami was rescued over the weekend after three weeks alone a mile out to

sea. today the hearty pup was reunited with his owner who also survived the devastating catastrophe. the owner saw the dog on television and identified him. remarkable. it's 7:17. back to matt, ann and al. we need good news there. >> how comforting for that owner to have his dog back. >> natalie back and al back from vacation as well. >> the two were not related. >> no, but still you had a good time. >> great time. unfortunately coming back to severe weather. we have video from topeka, kansas, this is a giant dust devil, really a tornado, slow move system kicking up a lot of debris and dirt throughout topeka, kansas. no damage reported with this. let's see what's going on as far as today. ahead of the cold front, warm moist air out of the gull. cold air with a low through the plains. that's going to generate strong storms from jackson to memphis.

again tonight. i'm going to walk into the dog pound. i don't know if it's safe to come in or not. okay. what's the big secret for tonight's game? >> that's a good question. the dogs will be the under dogs one more time. this time we're going to bring it home. let's go! forth in windy weather and never gained a lot of altitude. passengers were put on another plane and are on their way to san francisco. the affected flight is not involved anymore. another southwest airlines flight is being inspected after folks were diverted to los angeles last night. somebody reported a burning electrical smell. that plane landed in l.a.x. a few minutes later. that problem is not related to the video you are seeing, the video of another southwest airlines flight where a hole broke open in the roof. we want to check the monday morning forecast. >> we have good news for the start of the workweek. 70s and high pressure brings about a lot of clarity when it comes to the skies. mostly clear and sunny. the trough brings about changes. i know, the cold stuff will be back for the middle of the week.

university with details on this. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. yale university is internationally known as a top institution of higher learning. according to a new federal complaint filed with the department of education, the university community has a lot to learn when it comes to its treatment of women. it's one of america's oldest and most prestigious schools. yale university, now dealing with accusations this storied ivy league campus is a hostile sexual environment. >> i can't tell you how excited i was to get into yale. to find out they still weren't really concerned for women on the same level as men was really disturbing. >> reporter: her dream turned to disappointment when she says yale didn't react strongly enough to a series of sexually charged incident. >> fraternity brothers in front of the women's center holding a sign saying "we love you sluts." >> reporter: a widely circulated e-mail what's called a preseason

scouting report rating incoming students by their attractiveness and how many beers it would take to have sex with them highest rating sobriety and lowest, black-out. in all the cases, the university chose to educate rather than punish those involved. >> yale is sending a message that this isn't really that big of a deal. these are sort of little mistakes that young men are making in college and then we'll move on. >> reporter: brodsky and 15 other students alumnae men and women wanted more and filed a 26 page complaint with the department of education. they insist yale is in violation of title ix that requires any university receiving federal money to question it an an equal university for men and women. >> they will determine whether in fact there was a hostile environment, whether adults or university faculty knew or should have known about and whether that hostile environment prevents students from being

more from orlando. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. the federal government investigated the park here in the after math of dawn brancheau's death. osha fined seaworld $75,000, a fine that the seaworld officials are now disputing. meantime, park managers say every step of the way now they are doing everything they can to ensure the safety of the trainers. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: he's the show-stopper and he's back. tilikum, heavier than a city bus, launches, rolls and splashes the crowd. 12,000 pounds of excitement. but tilikum is also the same killer whale who last february bit down on trainer dawn brancheau's ponytail, pulled her into the tank and violently battered her like a whale might attack a seal in the wild.

she's worked with the whales since 1994 known for her smile and willingness to chat up whoever wanted to talk about her love, killer whales. what was little discussed until her death was tilikum had killed before -- not once, but twice. in 1991, killing another trainer and eight years later a trespasser. >> how many deaths are enough? if he kills four people, then are they going to do the right thing? >> reporter: seaworld says participating in shows is just a portion of tilikum's day, but we feel it is an important component of his physical, social and mental enrichment. when osha completed its investigation agents concluded in part seaworld was responsible for exposing its employees to struck-by and drowning hazards when interacting with killer whales. while seaworld disputes the government findings, it has instituted a new policy and plans on significant mechanical changes.

trainers are no longer in the water with the killer whales and soon the pool will include an emergency escape hatch. with the push of a button, a false bottom will shoot to the surface lifting whales and trainers to the surface and ideally, separating the trainers from danger. tilikum is not only back performing but he's also sea world's most prolific breeder, responsible for more than a dozen captive births of orcas at seaworld. that's important to their bottom line. generally it's no longer allowed to capture the killer whales at sea. ann? >> kerry sanders, thanks so much. dawn brancheau's family now joins us. they include diane gross, thomas laverde, darlene clages and debra frogamini and also dawn's mother. it's been 14 months since the

tragedy. here you are for the first time speaking out. why now? what is it that you want to say? darlene? >> you know, i think, ann, when you see pictures of our sister dawn, you see what a beautiful girl she is. her beauty came from the inside. that's what those of us who knew and loved her were so fortunate to have experienced. when dawn, you know, suffered through the tragic accident, by the next day our family had already decided to establish a foundation for her. it was just a natural reaction. she was such a good person. she made people feel so special. she took such good care of those around her, anyone she met, that we knew we had to do something good just to preserve her legacy. we didn't time this with tilly going back in the pool. you can see in the pictures when dawn is with the whale she loved that whale.

she loved caring for them. she did the best she could to make them happy and to educate the public. and so we know she would want whatever is best for tilly. none of us here are marine animal experts. we don't know what's best. we're going to leave it up to seaworld and the trainers and her seaworld family to make the decisions on tilly's life. we obviously want her fellow trainers to be safe. we're confident that that's whatwhat seaworld wants and they will put in safety measures so her friends and fellow trainers are safe in the environment. >> i saw some of you watching the tape and reacting to some of the modifications -- the idea that the floor could rise up, there would be a button, the idea that trainers would not be able to get in the water but would be able to throw fish. it seemed there was approval of that. you were approving that there would be changes. >> whatever seaworld feels they have to do to make it safer for

them, we have to go along with them. we have no say in this. >> she wanted to be a trainer from a very young age. she was just 9 years old? >> yes. >> she was living in northwest -- >> indiana. >> indiana. it was a long way to go to do something so huge as that. >> that was her goal in life. she made it. that's why you dream big. >> that was probably a message you gave her. >> yes. >> that's one reason why this foundation is about helping young people dream big. how are you going to do this? >> we're going to inspire them by showing dawn's story, encouraging them that you may say something your friends don't necessarily think is a main stream career, somethinging to pu pursue but if you believe in it, you can push forward and achieve anything in life and use dawn's example not only in doing something you love to do but also to become a community servant and give back to the community in the way dawn did.

her example was really thinking about others first and working locally, spending a lot of time with children. part of the reason she loved her job was the opportunity to educate children and the timing of why we are here also coincides with the fact that we are ready to talk about this and we have the capacity to implement programs and do things that mirror dawn's interests and the way she wanted to live her life and try to grow her ideas in a way to make her proud by completing the work, more than she could accomplish on her own. >> she wanted to make a difference and you being here talking about the foundation, you are continuing that effort. thank you so much. good luck to all of you. thanks for speaking to us. we're back after this.

>> are you kidding me? >> i'm not. i'm shocked to say it. i dreaded it. i remember we had about five hours left to go and alexis said, how much longer do we have on this airplane, mommy? i was trying to give her an honest answer but i said, oh, maybe fourish hours. she said, oh, good, i love this airplane. >> i have seen kids unravel, kids who will not be named, on a two-hour flight. i can't imagine. how are the kids enjoying the filming? is it something they are dealing with, coping with well? is it positive in their lives? >> it is a positive fixture in our lives. it's normal, exciting. they still cheer when the crew comes in the door. i would not say it if it weren't true. we just filmed this weekend for an upcoming episode. they said that was one of their best weekends ever. >> i was going back over transcripts and last time you were here you spoke to meredith. two of the kids colin and alexis had problems in school. there were reports they were

kicked out. you took them out because of behavior issues. they're still at home. why? >> they are starting to integrate back in within the very imminent future. there was actual medical issues that we dealt with. they're doing wonderfully at home, reading at the top level of kindergarten and writing. they're doing amazingly well. i know looking back now i made the right decision, did the right thing. >> you even said at the time clearly there is some fallout from a divorce here. there is the emotional strain of that. in terms of those two children and the others, are any of them exhibiting some negative behaviors that you think can be attributed to the divorce you went through? >> every child whose parents are divorced will go through some negative behaviors. colin and alexis's therapists said a third of the kids will sail through perfectly, a third do horribly and a third get

through it with counseling. she said you don't know which kids will do what but the important thing is to have a positive attitude, to pick up where our family left off and continue on with the traditions which is what i'm doing. we're really good now. >> are you and jon good now? this was a tough, public divorce. i know there were times you two didn't want to be in the same room as one another. how is that now? >> i think it's still the same. i am doing what i can to reach out and communicate. what i receive back is, you know, not in my control. i'm doing the best that i can to vol him in our family. >> is he involved with the children? >> he has them two weekends a month. i wish that he would see them more to be honest. so do they. but the important thing is that i control my reaction, my behavior, my attitude and my words. >> you said to our producer in the preinterview in terms of your own dating life, and you

roll your eyes, but -- >> do we always have to talk about this? >> you said you don't have much hope there. you have been on about half a date since you were divorced. first of all, what's half a date? >> i don't know. >> why do you think it's so tough? >> well, you start out the first time around and you're a single girl with not a lot of issues or baggage. i like to have fun and i don't have a lot of time for myself. i do have eight kids. i feel like i have my life together pretty much. but let's be honest. it's going to take a strong person to wrangle this mess. >> that's right. you are someone that would be dating a single mother of eight children. that's a big undertaking. >> yeah. >> do you think that intimidates or over well. s guys? >> probably. if he can pass the test he's got to be super-man. >> you're tweeting. you have entered the twitter generation. >> yeah. i'm not as old as i seem.

entrepreneurs came from afghanistan. we had a closed -- i mean a video conference with president karzai who assured everyone there in dallas that women's rights won't be sacrificed in these reconciliation talks with the taliban which we are all worried about. we don't want to see afghanistan go back to the way it was ten years ago where women couldn't leave their homes. they couldn't work and now we are seeing a lot of success with afghan women. and of course there are many, many challenges as we saw right after the conference finished with the attack on the u.n. workers. >> you are paying a lot of attention to the news and in pursuing this work you have made appearances -- i know you appeared with first lady michelle obama for a 9/11 memorial. but you're also, i'm sure, aware

that in recent days a lot has been made about the obama doctrine being different from the bush doctrine that there is now a new part of american foreign policy under this new president that basically tries to defend america's core values. i wonder if you see it as a departure. is it a new doctrine? >> i don't know that. i'm not studying that for sure when i look around the world, but what we do see around the world is this freedom movement. the different protests and revolutions in oppressive countries and in the united states we stand for freedom. >> you think we should support them? >> what's difficult to is how to figure out how we can. is there a way to support the freedom fighters? you know, it's difficult. and it's difficult for us, as leaders in the freedom movement, which we should be because if we don't, if americans don't stand

up for freedom, then who will? >> you and your husband are, i understand, in some kind of competition regarding the success of both of your books? >> not really. he's sold many, many more books than i have. i was on the bestseller list for a long time. he is still on the bestseller list. i'm proud of his book and of mine, too. >> does he retire well? >> he does. he's playing golf, enjoying that. he's still interested in a lot of things that he was interested in when he was president. this afghan, protecting the rights of afghan women. he's planning really terrific things for our veterans that are coming up that he's really excited about. >> i want to get to something you say in the book which is very powerful especially for people who will read it. that is what you write about this experience you had when you were young, i think you were 17 years old, driving a car and you had just left the movie theater

and i know this is a hard turn to have you talk about this, but it is a powerful impact in terms of the takeaway people can get from this story. you really address this in the book, the fact that someone you cared about -- >> one of my really good friends. >> died. >> but only by coincidence. he was not in my car but he was in the car that i ran into when i ran a stop sign, you know, on a dark country road in midland. it was something, of course, that i have lived with for the rest of my life but also that ruined his family's life. i mean, i know that. and every parent knows how destructive it would be for a parent to lose a child and in this case a 17-year-old very, very promising young man. >> how does one overcome? >> i don't know that you ever really overcome it or get over it, but, you know, as time passes there is a certain

acceptance, i think, that comes with tragedy in anyone's life of any kind of tragedy. and it's just really a part of life. that is trying to both understand and accept good morning, everybody, time now 8:26. after nearly a week of testimony is expected to resume in the trial of two men accused of killing chauncey bailey. the trial was postponed because a juror was ill. broussard says they told him to kill bailey because they wanteda to prevent him from writing an article.

and we're back at 8:45 with a touching story about a 9/11 family and a brand new puppy just born at the tsa's canine academy in san antonio, texas. nbc's tom costello has details on this. good morning. >> reporter: hey, matt. the tsa was created, of course, months after 9/11 to try to keep terrorists from ever attacking another airport or plane, but doing that requires the help of some very special noses. hard to imagine these four-legged balls of fur so curious, playful and into absolutely everything will one

day be using those noses to serve on the front lines for the tsa, hunting for explosives. scott thomas runs the breeding program. what makes a dog really good? hi, sweetie. really good at doing his job? >> we are looking for a dog that's environmentally bold, that can go to any environment, act like he's lived there his whole life. secondly their desire to find their favorite toy. >> reporter: it looks like puppy play but the tsa set up a boot camp for dogs. there is something else that makes this special. >> this right here is dolan, number 500. >> reporter: every dog is named after one of the 300 people who died on 9/11 and the class of puppies all start with d. dolan's name is tattooed in his ear. the 500th tsa puppy to go through the program. >> it's such an honor. i can't even tell you what an honor it is for me. >> reporter: at the pentagon's

9/11 memorial benches stand as tribute to those who died that day. one is named after lisa dolan's husband, bob dolan. >> i have a special connection with dogs. so it really filled my heart. i teared up. >> reporter: little dolan has a lot of work ahead. for a year he'll live with a foster family in san antonio before returning to the tsa to begin intense training in bomb detection, learning to sniff out explosives in lounges, train stations, cargo containers and passenger planes and then alert the handler. >> some dogs increase the pace, some slow. they increase in sniffing behavior. >> reporter: it takes more than a year for a dog and handler to learn to work as a team. and there is constant turnover because dogs generally retire at 8. the tsa has to train 300 dogs each year to maintain and grow the program. it turns out dolan represents

something special to the dolans. captain dolan started his navy career in bomb detection. lisa said a specially trained dog found his body at the pentagon after nef. >> -- 9/11. >> it seems the puppy completed a circle for the family. >> reporter: there is a washout rate at the tsa canine academy. 30% to 40% of the dogs don't make it. they are given to loving families for adoption. but the trainers like labs because of their disposition, their love of hide and seek and the incredible noses. back to you. >> tom, thank you so much. lisa dolan and her daughter becca are here to meet the puppy for the first time. when they said there is a washout rate you thought, not dolan. >> absolutely not. >> this is a great tribute to your husband. >> it is. >> what does it mean to the family? >> as i said on the tape, i almost can't explain how full my heart is. we are a dog-loving family.

we have a service dog who works with children who lost someone in the military, who have experienced trauma. we are such dog people to begin with. then to find out about the program which we had no idea about. and that they would be paying tribute to my husband, captain bob dolan, it just is so fitting. it's so fitting. >> becca, it appears i am the only thing standing between you and meeting dolan. let's bring the puppy out now along with scott thomas, the program director for this. hello, dolan. >> oh, my gosh. hello, baby. oh, you got my nose. >> you're looking at part of the story where it says your dad's name is tattooed inside the ear. what does that mean to you? >> it's like there is a little

arizona. inspections followed that revealing cracks in three other planes. then there was another emergency landing of a southwest jet just overnight. so a lot to talk about with that. check your travel agent. we'll have more on that coming. also, as children we have been taught that honesty is the best policy. we'll get expert advice that says thsa says maybe that's not true with money matters. telling a realtor the top price you are willing to pay, disclosing your salary, sometimes discretion is in your best interest. maybe keeping secrets at times. >> the crowd is showing us the love but the crowd in detroit didn't show charlie sheen the love. it was a rough night for him in detroit when he started his tour. we're going to show you what went down in the motor city. >> all right. >> lots to get to. ann's here so natalie has the

headlines at the news desk. good morning. >> good morning, everyone once again. southwest airlines will cancel a hundred flights today after federal investigators reported cracking in three of the company's planes. nbc's tom costello is back with us from washington, d.c. with the latest on this. tom, good morning. >> reporter: the ntsb says to expect boeing to issue an urgent service bulletin urging airlines to check their 737-300s for cracks. southwest says cracks were found in two of the planes that it took out of service. the ntsb said there was a third, but 19 of 79 planes taken out of service were found to have no cracks and they are now back in service. >> we found evidence of additional cracks on that airplane. >> reporter: investigators in yuma, arizona, have now removed a large section from the roof of the southwest 737 that made an emergency landing friday night. that piece will go through metallurgy tests at the ntsb lab in washington.

but already there are clear signs of pre-existing fracture lines on the aircraft's skin along what's called a lap joint. >> what the issue is that along this particular lap joint it was not known in the industry that this was an area on airplanes of this number of cycles that those lap joints should be inspected. >> reporter: new passenger photos show the five-foot hole that opened up 18 minutes into the flight and the oxygen masks that dropped as the plane lost pressure. f.a.a. records show during a heavy maintenance overhaul in march of last year inspectors found cracks along the fuselage of this 737-300. a frame crack 867 inches from the nose, another 380 inches from the nose, 500 inches from the nose and many more. but the f.a.a. cautions that's not unusual for a plane that was 14 years old at the time. inspections are conducted to find and repair those cracks.

>> some wear and tear on an airplane is perfectly normal. an airplane is constantly pressurized, depressurized and it creates wear and tear over time. >> reporter: late sunday southwest issued a statement saying prior to this incident it was in compliance with f.a.a. regulations and inspections and, quote, what we saw with flight 812 was a new and unknown issue. but the question for inspectors is whether this is an isolated case or a potentially bigger problem with the fleet. >> i know the f.a.a. is looking at that also very closely to see if they need to mandate additional inspections. >> reporter: meanwhile, thousands of southwest passengers had their travel plans thrown into chaos over the weekend as the airline cancelled hundreds of flights over two days. >> oh, i think it's excellent that they are checking planes. it's an inconvenience, but i would rather they check the planes than let us fly unsafely. >> reporter: southwest is expected to cancel about a hundred more flights today. it hopes to have completed

>> yes. >> do you reveal to them what you were currently making in your last job, jean? >> not unless you have to. because what you want is for that person to put a number on the table first. granted, my husband is an executive recruiter. this is a really hard conversation to have. he says, i can get anybody to give me their number. be cagey and say, this is how much i'm looking to make. >> it's a great point but i interview peopople all the time. the first thing you ask is what do you make? what did you make at your last job? if the person doesn't answer the question immediately honestly, then you have a lack of trust there and you may not hire them. what i was saying to jean is the key is to be proactive. don't put the number out first. if you're asked, what did you make last year you have an answer. say, look, i was paid this and here's why i'm worth it and here's why i want to make more. >> turn it around and say, what does this job pay? >> great point.

this morning on "today's health" soft addictions. what are they? they are not drug-related but if you can't stop shopping, going on facebook or eating chocolate you may have a soft addiction. they are featured in woman's day magazine. gail saltz is a "today" contributor. good morning. >> good morning, al. >> what's the difference between addiction and compulsive behavior? >> with a true addiction you expect tolerance. like you get used to it and you need more of whatever it is to feel the same way and you expect withdrawal. so the feeling that if you can't do the thing you feel terrible. with a true addiction like alcohol, tobacco, drugs, when you stop doing it you feel physical withdrawal. nauseous, sweaty and you have a tremor and so on. with things we call soft addictions or compulsive behavior you may not feel good but you don't have physical withdrawal. it's just something you want to

keep doing and it's emotionally driven as opposed to being physically driven. >> so it not a biological or a genetic component? >> there is often a biological or genetic component though we are talking about compulsive behaviors. it tends to run in families and even if it's not it can be brought on by other things. maybe you are doing this behavior because you're depressed or anxious and you are trying to fend off the feelings. it can be in the environment. say your mom was a big shopper and she handled everything by going out and shopping. that could affect you and you could grow up to be a compulsive shopper. >> when you talk about these addictive behaviors. >> yes. >> you talk about something that can be detrimental in life. do soft addictions have this same component? >> absolutely. that's the thing. even though i'm not calling it a drug or alcohol kind of addiction, they can really destroy your functioning in life. they destroy relationships. if you're shopping like crazy and you can't afford it and your spouse is upset, this can ruin a

marriage. it can financially ruin you. it can ruin your work environment if you're doing whatever it is at work and not working. >> there are questions you should ask yourself. >> yes. >> the first question is, are you planning and really preoccupied about planning to do the behavior? >> exactly. it's not just how often you're doing it but are you thinking about it all the time? if it's about exercise, when can i go to the gym, how long can i spend in the gym, what will i do? same thing about shopping. any of these behaviors you think about it a lot. >> if the behavior impacts other parts of your life, that's a problem as well. >> absolutely. this is the primary one. is this affecting your relationships, your work, your finances. >> and then are you secretive about the behavior. >> another biggie. do you find you shop and then kind of leave the bags in the trunk so your spouse won't notice when you bring them are in? are you going under ground because you know you have a problem?

>> and then you have tried to quit and you have to ask yourself have i tried to quit and i can't. >> either you can't or you did quit but it was for a relatively short period of time and you started. sometimes people fool themselves and say, well, i can quit, i quit before. but you went right back to it. >> how do you break it? >> first off you have to admit you have a problem. no behavior changes until you admit you have a problem. that's a big feature of it. >> what's driving the behavior? >> is this mood-generated? do you feel crummy when you don't do it? does it run in the family? you have to look at what's driving it so you can stop it. >> in the case of overeating they say, look, walk away for ten minutes and come back. >> exactly. shake up the behavior. compulsions are repetitive and thrive on a pattern. if you pull back and say, instead of checking my e-mail every hour on the hour, i'm going to shake it up and do ten minutes one day, two hours the
