the barry bonds trial. why attorneys seem confident of an acquittal, coming up. a live look outside the bay bridge, today, april 7th. this is today in the bay. good morning, thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm brent cannon. rain is back. christina has a look at what to expect today. it came right on time. >> yeah, it's right on time. especially if you are someone who hasn't washed your car in a week, right on time for you in particular. things are looking good now. light scattered showers. no ponding or puddling taking place out there. we are expecting more moderate and heavy rainfall to come down. now, the area that's getting hit the hardest is in the south bay. good shower activity. it will continue then we'll see

clearing by late afternoon and by tonight, it's out of here. temperatures drop toward freezing. let's get you to work on time at 5:00 a.m. with mike. >> yeah, i washed my car a couple days ago. i listened to the forecast and we know about the wind coming through the area. 580 will be an issue. 580 westbound coming through this area and heading toward pleasanton. camera shaking a good deal because of the wind. wind advisories for a number of bay area bridges. an accident reported. i'll show you where that is coming up. >> we have an update on a fire in berkeley that brought down power lines and damaged gas meters. we have the latest on that. christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. four people were inside overnight when the fire broke out. they smelled smoke. they were all able to get out okay. here is what's left of the home

here on dwight near sacramento street. this started about 1:00 in the morning. police arrived first and found power lines down in front of the home. they couldn't make a direct attack on the home. firefighters had to go around the side while they called pg&e to shut off the power. two gas meters blew up in the fire. one on the home and one on a converted garage. for 90 minutes they said they dealt with a continuous five to six-foot wall of fire coming from the home. they kept putting water on the home and released the valve to shut off gas. there was talk pg&e may have to dig up the street to shut off the gas. that didn't happen. what caused it, they still don't know. the fire inspector is out here this morning. firefighters telling me the home is very close to a total loss.

reporting live in berkeley, christie smith. a firefighter is in the hospital after battling a fire in the mission dristrict. he was reportedly injured after falling from a ladder. one of the firefighters were able to contain the fire late last night. no reports of injuries. investigators are still looking into the cause. an oakland firefighter is recovering from serious injuries to his face and mouth. firefighters were fighting a mobile home fire near mills college when there was an explosion and shrapnel hit the firefighter in the face. he's expected to survive. the giants fan injured one week ago today is still in a coma this morning. doctors say there's no improvement in his condition. he possibly has brain damage. the community continues to show support for the family.

thousands turned out at a barbecue to show their support. look at the people there. it raised at least $120,000 for his medical bills. a message for the giants fans. the actions of two men do not reflect their views. check out a sign and the picture in a recent vigil. i'm a dodgers fan and i'm disgusted. they are taking steps to change security at the stadium. the team's owner hired a former los angeles police chief to make the changes and develop a new security blueprint. meantime, they are set to start a three-game series on monday. this one at at&t park. the team says security is a top priority. however, they are not saying if there's going to be increases in patrols. it is 5:04. in a few hours closing arguments are set to begin in a perjury trial against barry

bonds. in a surprise twist, defense rested their case without calling a witness. we have live at the federal courthouse in san francisco. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. closing arguments are scheduled to begin at 8:30 and will take several hours. the jury could get the case by the end of the day. it will be up to a panel of eight men and four -- i'm sorry, eight women and four men to decide whether to convict him of perjury. yesterday, the judge threw out one of the five felony charges. he now faces three counts of making false statements and one count of obstruction of justice. the fact the defense didn't call witnesses to testify indicates two things. one the burden of proof is on the prosecution and two rksz bond's attorneys feel confident of an acquittal. >> it doesn't highlight the fact mr. bonds probably wasn't going

to testify. you don't put on some witnesses and question why he wasn't testifying. >> reporter: the case could come down to the testimony of a woman who saw his personal trainer inject him with something bonds said was undetectable. it contradicts what bonds said no one injected him with anything. if convicted, bonds faces a range of penalties from hard time to probation. it's his reputation on trial here. live in san francisco, monty frances. a man accused of assaulting a jogger at a san francisco park is going to be arraigned today. he's held on several charges including kidnapping and atte t attempted rape. it allegedly happened friday afternoon. he grabbed a female jogger then assaulted her.

he was arrested earlier this week. it is 5:06. jury continues in the alexander trial. he's the teenager that tried to blow up his high school and murder his former chemistry teacher. he's pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. the lawyers say he has schizophrenia. prosecutors say he knew the attack was wrong and did it anyway. if they decide he was insane, he'll be institutionalized. they vote on a new contract. union negotiators recommended 2700 nurses to accept a new three-year deal. the key provision is yearly wage increases. they have been battling different proposals. they will vote to increase fares and cut service. it will eliminate ten trains

from the schedule. increasing fares and parking fees would happen and increase. they would close three stations. on the chopping block, san francisco's bay shore station, san mateo hayward park station and san jose's capital station. there would be modified service for weekend and special events like baseball games. they are facing a $30 million budget deficit. people are going to share their ideas on making pedestrians safer in san francisco. the public safety committee will host a hearing at city hall to keep people safe. they sadist ricket six, has the highest rate of pedestrian injuries and deaths in the city. they want lawmakers to create an action plan, fund street improvements and get police.

>> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's check in with christina. the rain is coming down this morning. >> yeah, it's coming down. it's going to make your driver rougher than it has been for several mornings. the wind is coming out making it difficult to drive. if you have a high-profile vehicle or coming over the bridges. we are looking good now. the winds 15 miles per hour in navato. the showers are going to subside. the most moisture comes through, the bulk of it this morning. a little bit of activity is headed to the south, toward the south bay. what that means for your drive, let's find out with mike inouye. >> the timing, 5:30 or 5:31 mean as slowdown just after hill crest. it's below 50 now into bay point. a 7-mile-per-hour reading for concord and more across the bridge where chp issued an

advisory there. there's 12 to 15-mile-an-hour winds here. look at the camera shaking. back to you. >> thank you very much. we have an update on a fire in berkeley where four people escaped a burning house. today in the bay's christy smith joins us live with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. there's a berkeley fire inspector here trying to figure out how the fire started and a supervisor from pg&e here because there were a number of utility hazards. when the firefighters arrived here on dwight way, the best part, everyone inside, they smelled smoke and got out okay. when firefighters arrived, the problem they faced was there were power lines running across the street from the burning home. they had to attack it not from the front but from the sides.

this started at 1:00. it took 40 minutes to knock down. another hazard, two gas meters blew creighiting a five to six foot flame that burned for 90 minutes. here is the battalion chief. is it unusual for these meters to blow up? >> if there's direct flame it's definitely a possibility. if we get there early enough, we can keep the flame off the meters. with the amount of fire we had showing, it did you want surprise me at all. >> reporter: the first thing pg&e did when they got here is got the lines shut off. the power lines running across the street to the home. power is off to the home. everything is secure here. the four residents, they are getting help this morning from the red cross. reporting live in berkeley, christie smith, today in the bay. >> thank you.

a firefighter is in the hospital after falling off a ladder battling a fire in the mission district. more than 100 firefighters worked to contain the blaze. nobody else was hurt. nearby business owners were caught off guard when the fire started. >> i looked outside the building to the two buildings next to us and the wind was whipping fire off the side of the building. at that point, i knew something was really serious. >> investigators are on the scene this morning. they are looking into the cause of that fire. meantime, police say a three-alarm fire is suspicious. that fire broke out last night when a trash compacter exploded. 20 people were injured but all of them are expected to be okay. some 113 people were displaced.

the jury has reached a verdict in the civil trial of a rape case. bob redell is live outside the superior court in san jose. bob, is there any indication when the foreman might announce the verdict? >> reporter: yes, it will be later this morning. after three and a half days of deliberation, they reached a verdict. they are scheduled to announce whether they are liable and whether to award damages to the woman that says while she was drunk she was gang raped by members of the baseball team at a house party nearly four years ago. she was 17 years old at the time. initially, she was suing nine men. after testimony during the trial, six were dropped from the case. four of whom settled, two abs absolved of anything.

the other two have appeared in court to defend themselves. chadwick could face a judgment of $2.5 million for not rescuing the teen from the room where she was sexually assaulted. it was three women who got her out of the room. there could be a fine for participating in the assault. the teen was not that drunk and she invited the men to have sex with her. during the trial, recent facebook photos of her partying in scantily dressed clothes. six men and six women on the injury. in a civil trial, only nine of the 12 are needed to find the defendants liable. they only need a preponderance of evidence. this is a much less strict requirement than you would find in a criminal court that requires all jurors to agree to convict on evidence beyond a

reasonable doubt. bob redell, today in the bay. >> it's gone on for many years. we may have a resolution on that. >> interesting to see. 5:36 now. things look grim for the giants fan attacked one week ago today. he remains in a medically induced coma. they say he may have suffered brain damage. police are looking for the two dodgers fans that attacked him last thursday. in the meantime, people up and down california continue to show support for his family. there was a tearful individual for them last night. giants and dodgers fans showed up. in san jose, the paramedics held a barbecue fund-raiser for the family. they helped raise $120,000. >> he would just be overwhelmed with joy that so many people would come out and support him and be there for him.

people he doesn't even know. >> the family will receive additional donations on friday at the giants home opener. the team is dedicating the game to brian sew. san francisco's original joe is coming back but not the original location. it's 601 union street. despite the new digs, the family-owned restaurant plans to keep old stand byes including booths from the original restaurant and building a kitchen that is open to the dining room. you may recall the fire wiped outlet the original restaurant back in 2007. so, a bay area classic. if you haven't been there, gotta go. >> yeah, gotta eat at joes before the month is done. you know, a lot of clam chowder going to be sold today. a lot of the warmer food items, tea, coffee, because it's cold out there this morning.

we are going to see periods of rain. a soggy day. gusty winds. pop-up thunderstorms this afternoon. weather action, basically. we have had a lot of clear skies, beautiful days. it's all going to change. just for one day. we'll be back up to 60 degrees for tomorrow. the temperatures will continue to climb as we head throughout the weekend and next week. finally, spring is setting into the bay area. right now, we have spring showers. of course, april showers bring may flowers. as you can see, san jose is getting the light rain. you can see here by 1:00 p.m., it will be relatively clear. a little bit of isolated activity at that time. mostly in the south bay. the cold air comes back in bringing temperatures near freezing. we are expecting frost. today, not too bad. temps in the upper 50s. of course, because the rain and wind is coinciding with the morning drive, let's see how

this morning it is the countdown to a government shutdown. while you were sleeping, capitol hill staff were pulling an all nighter to come up with a compromise. tracie potts is live this morning. no deal yet, but leaders think they are close? >> they think they are making progre progress. they were all up late last night trying to work this out. they let the staffers up later trying to work out details. the sense is number one they have the willingness to negotiate. they are making progress. they came out calling the meeting honest, productive, constructive but no deal. they are narrowed down the

issues of concern. no specific amount that both sides are willing to cut from this budget and call it a day. according to boehner there are deep cuts there. president obama reminded them it is urgent to get this done. if not, we could have a government shutdown that has real consequences for real people. we are talking 800,000 government workers all over the country, defense contractors other contractors and businesses that rely on the government being open. all of whom could lose their paychecks if they don't get something done in the next 48 hours. now the house side is working on somewhat of a compromise. we could see it come up for a vote today. a one-week extension of the current budget. that's not necessarily what they want to do. >> good to know. thanks for watching. we are hearing from a former person who is accused of

stealing drugs and selling them on the streets. he's the former manager of the enforcement team. in february, he was arrested on charges of running a drug ring. welsh would not go into specifics of the case. he says he's sorry for what he did. >> i realized i placed a black eye on law enforcement. i hope, after this is all done the citizens and the community will realize that yes, i made a mistake, but not to hold the entire law enforcement community accountable for that. >> the contra costa district attorney says 12 cases had to be thrown out because he's no longer a credible witness. 5:45 now. the man accused of kidnapping jaycee dugard and holding her captive for 18 years is expected to plead guilty today.

he faces 18 counts. we don't know the details of the plea bargain, yet. his wife nancy faces 18 counts. she's pleaded not guilty and is expected to stand trial unless there's a plea deal. >> ticks are popping up in the bay area. experts say overgrown grass in local yards, fields and parks are great breeding grounds for ticks. look at those things. they jump off the grass and anything that brushes past them. humans and dogs are most susceptible. the california board of public health says there were 11 cases of lime disease in 2009 in san mateo. ten in so know ma, three in marin. if you get a tick, save it in a jar and bring it to the doctors

office to check it for lime disease. >> sometimes they are just stuck to you. a bite into the law limiting the number of dogs without leashes inside the parks. owners can only bring three unleashed dogs to designated areas certain parts of the morning. violators could see a fine. the city already had dog limits but it wasn't enforceable. it relied on park goers to monitor. the rain is back in the bay area this morning. it brings back fears that radiation from japan will once again fall on us. experts say traces of radiation may be in the rainwater, but not at dangerous levels. the potency is cut in half every eight days. by the time it gets to the crops and on to your plate, the levels are usually harmless.

>> it's 5:54 now. a mock radiation drill in southern california. a nuclear plant will test emergency preparedness that signals the release of radioactivity. workers will simulate how to shut down the plant and secure radioactive fuel. it's required of nuclear plants every few years. the herd of five bison could swell to 12 by fall. they are offering them $50,000 to add more bison. they will use the donation to shore up the pasture where they live and later this fall, they will buy more bison. scott mcgrew says seeing them is like seeing a zoom tablet. >> the difference is the bison probably will not go extinct.
