well good morning, everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. from sizzling to snowy, we have seen all types of weather in the past few weeks. this was the scene in concord hours ago. sidewalks and playgrounds. hail was piled up on the roads and everywhere. it blanketed everything in sight. throughout the east bay, viewers called in reporting hail. this is what it looked like in martinez as the hail rained down. we have a look at the forecast now. >> good friday chilly morning to you. we have patchy frost. temperatures in the 30s and 40s after a wild afternoon thursday that saw hail and thunder, we should not see that as widespread this afternoon. highs upper 50s to near 60 for this afternoon. weekend plans look fine. getting back to the mid to upper 60s. late day showers sunday for the

over being burglarized, but she's still shaken up. >> we went to i hop and ran a couple errands. we were gone 11:00 to 2:00 and the front door was open. i noticed my laptop was gone. i said i knew ben used it. i said did you move the laptop? he said his ipod and gps was gone as well. i have an alarm system and didn't set it because it was the middle of the day. that's when the break-ins happen. >> it's documented on this website. if you click on b for burglary, you can click on the b and see the time of day it happened. almost all of them happened before sunset. this is not the only city experiencing break-ins in the

daylight. criminals are taking it to a different level. police say they are posing as gardeners, utility workers or contractors. they knock on the door and engage the homeowner in a conversation then -- >> during the course of that conversation, the second suspect unbeknownst to the victim slips into the house. >> reporter: and rips them off. >> you have to be on your toes. can't trust people coming to your door. >> reporter: this has been documented all over. the victim of the daylight break-in has advice. >> get an alarm system and then turn it on, if you have one. then really getting to know your neighbors. it just makes you feel a lot more secure. >> that was cheryl hurd reporting. oakland police thought they fixed their radio system. it turns out there are still glitches in that system.

officers in the field couldn't reach the dispatch center and vice versa. dispatchers used other ways to get priority messages to patrol officers. no priority calls were dropped. city leaders have been working for months to replace the outdated radio systems. that should be finished by summer. vallejo is joining with other departments to form a s.w.a.t. team. the s.w.a.t. team in vallejo was dismantled due to budget cuts. the cooperative effort will increase the number of s.w.a.t. officers. they will be able to respond in three communities. the federal government could come to a standstill. >> once again, the staff is going to be working tonight

around the clock in order to see if we can finally close a deal. >> there is no deal this morning after a late-night meeting. president obama reported some progress saying both sides are inching closer to a deal. congress must reach a deal to keep the funding going by midnight tonight eastern time. if there's a shutdown, 170,000 federal workers in california will not report to work. employees considered essential will likely stay on duty as they did during the government shutdown back in 1995. there's more fall out this morning from last year's pg&e gas explosion in san bruno. we are learning two top executives are resigning. they are both stepping down.

keenan will take $3 million in severance when he resigns later this month. the judge who struck down california's ban on same-sex marriage is talking act his own sexuality. the district judge admitted he is gay, but he says that was no reason to rekus himself from the case. he served for more than two decades after being appointed by president george h.w. bush. all right, it's rainy out there. rob has a look at the forecast. rob. >> we are seeing a chilly start. we have the cold air dropping out of the north and at least during the afternoon a slight chance of afternoon showers. cool and breezy for another day. not the type of thunderstorms we saw rolling around the bay area on your thursday. cool and breezy. showers for the weekend.

good news for the weekend forecast. clearing skies, a bit warmer and showers late on sunday in the far north bay to wrap up the weekend. morning temperatures 30s and 40s heading toward lunchtime and the afternoon, a cool and breezy day. highs warmer than thursday but only year 60. the warmest spots arnds the bay area. the weekend is the warming trends we have been waiting for. a few showers. staying mild for the new week and temperature stay in the 60s. let's check in with mike. >> 880, we'll focus on the maze again. we have construction for another half hour to 23rd in the northbound direction. the signs are telling you to move over. the fast lanes are blocked. we jump to the south. we continue to follow the issue.

this is 880 at 280. this is where we had a big accident overnight and conditions that were not good for driving. christie smith is live on scene. you should be able to go from 17 to 280. it was a problem this morning. christie is heading on the scene and should be able to get us details. 580 through livermore. an easy drive westbound over night hail made it crazy coming through the alta momont pass 66 you are coming off highway 4. we are expecting more folks to head over to the bay bridge for the giants game. midday, a burst of traffic. it could be an issue. >> thank you, mike.

you mentioned christie. we have christie live now. a crash that involved a san jose police car, correct? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. i can hardly hear you. i'll tell you what we know. there's a lot of unsettled weather here in san jose which may have played a role in this accident. see what's on the ground along interstate 880. there's basically hail sitting here. we drove down from oakland, clear in oakland and wild weather here. it may have contributed to the accident with the chp officer who was injured. i don't have a lot of details. dispatch confirmed it wauz major accident. the officer has a broken leg, nonlife threatening injuries. he was responding to another accident. he got out to help another truck driver who spun out and was hit

we are getting to know more about him from the woman who worked closest to him. rebecca was his partner. they worked 12-hour shifts together. she says brian treated every patient with the utmost respect an charmed them with his humor. >> he made light of the bad situations. he tried to cheer them up. he was passionate about his job and loved to take care of his patients. always had them laughing to make them feel better. as a partner, he was a great friend. >> he was a devoted father who embraced every moment with his young son and daughter. the attack is a great loss to the community. he should be helping patients instead of being one. the story is captivating people around the state and the country. this morning, we are hearing from a couple who saw the beating and were the first to come to his aid. mary parks from our sister

station had the story. >> reporter: joan is a lifetime dodgers fan. they have seen huge problems develop at the stadium. >> you are still going to get the same bad element coming to the games. they do what they want. they get drunk. they have an agenda. anybody that says anything to them or wears the wrong color, they want to beat your butt and they have no fear of security. >> reporter: it's what the couple believes occurred last week when two men beat brian stow in the parking lot. >> you come outside the stadium, who knows what's going to happen. >> reporter: it was opening day as fans walk to their car. she heard two men taunting him. >> they were saying we don't want no trouble, we're paramedics, we fight, we lose

our jobs. these guys followed them and sucker punched them. >> reporter: they witnessed him being kicked in the head while he was down. the suspects sped away in a car with a woman and a child. they worked with detectives on these composite sketches. the man with the facial hair delivers the blows to stow. >> we see it every game, talking about what we saw in the stands and the parking lot. it's sick. >> reporter: this week, they went to a candle light vigil in support of stow and his family. >> we hope they take it as an opportunity to clean things up. >> that was mary parks reporting. charlie beck and the los angeles mayor announced there will be heightened police presence. with members of brian stow's family at the press conference, beck expects to add 30 to 40

additional officers to patrol the area. we could know as early as today the verdict in the barry bonds perjury case. the jury came in to deliberate what was previously a scheduled day off. both sides finished arguments on friday. it comes down to whether there's enough evidence to show bonds knowingly took steroids. it's implausible bonds didn't know what his trainer gave him. they say the case is based on his celebrity status and nothing more. the jury continues deliberations this morning. if there's a verdict, we will bring it to you live. a number of american companies have limited overtime in idle plants while they wait for parts. toyota plans to restart operations april 18th. let's turn to nicole. good morning.

>> reporter: a very good morning to you. happy friday. the dow slipped 17 points. 12,409 is where we ended. nasdaq lost three to 2796. futures are higher. stocks dropped yesterday. we came off our lows in the wake of the biggest, latest earthquake in japan. that renewed investor fears, disruptions, toyota and the ongoing nuclear crisis there. asian markets closed higher today. they shrugged off the fear. oil climbs to 111 bucks a barrel. gold is another record high. we keep getting the record highs. we have wholesale trade in a couple hours. otherwise, a quiet end to the trading week. also making headlines, americans borrowed more money in february

in health news this morning, one in three people in the

united states will encounter a mistake during a hospital stay. that's the word from a new study. about ten times higher than estimates using older methods. they can range from bed sores and staph infections as well. there may be many error that is go undetected. the next time you sit down for a teeth cleaning, your dentist may save you a life saving test. patients used to use a rinse and spit into a cup and they test the strand for hpv. people infected with the disease are 32 times more likely to develop oral cancer than those not infected. they recently started offering the test to her patients. >> i want to make sure the people at risk know they are at risk so behaviors can be
