>> we're waking up to kind of a chilly saturday morning, we're seeing 30s and 40s outside, some patchy frost possible in parts of the north bay, but as we head through the afternoon, things are going to look pretty good. temperatures getting into the low 60s, this is up from the highs in the past couple of days where we were only in the 50s. you're going to notice some clouds trying to build up on the hill tops. i don't think we're going to see any showers today that brought all the weird weather. but we are tracking some changes as we wrap up the weekend. we are going to see some clouds heading into sunday. more of a chance for showers in the forecast by the end of the weekend. we'll have a look at that in the full forecast coming up in a few minutes. president obama will sign a budget that will keep the government open for a few more weeks. house leaders agreed to $78.5

billion in cuts. the down to the wire deal means that military personnel will continue to get paid and if you're expecting a tax refund, the check will be in the mail for people who filed paper returns. and the deal will keep the most treasured places open for tourists. we will start with "today in the bay's" look at some of the issues that caused the budget deal to come down to the wire. >> cut a deal or close down the government. that was the choice as house republicans huddled for a dramatic late-night meeting. less than two hours before a budget deadline. >> i'md that senator reid and i and the white house have come to an agreement that will in fact cut spending and keep our government open. >> leaders in both parties reached an agreement that will allow our small businesses to get the loans they need, and families to get the mortgages they applied for and hundreds

oof thousands of americans can show up to work. >> the possibilities of a compromise didn't look especially good. >> a shutdown of the entire government hinges on a republican demand to take health care away from women. >> democrats say republicans insisted on defunding planned parenthood. but republicans say this fight is about spending cuts and nothing more. >> not about women's health, it is about economic health. >> happy to see the shutdown avoided as a group of eighth graders from san jose's brett hart middle school. greg and his son will be able to see all the landmarks after all. >> it would have been really neat for him to be able to see that and i'm glad that he's going to be able to, but if he had missed it, it would have been difficult to tell him, oh, this is really cool. >> now as george mentioned, a key component of the budget

short fall depended on on budget cuts for planned parenthood. tax dollars do not go toward abortions because of the hyde amendment, a fact that some lawmakers seemed to miss. republicans went so far as to claim that 90% of the budget went toward abortions, he later admitted that his numbers were not correct. we found that 97% of planned parenthood's budget is spent on preventative care like health care for women. representative barbara lee is in washington, d.c. and tells us by phone that he is breathing a sigh of relief. >> i'm very relieved that people will not be furlowed and that our troops will receive their checks and that, you know, the government will not be shut

down, that would have been disastrous. >> remember congressman dan lund again responded to the budget deal saying, quote, the cuts are historic. it's time that all parties get serious about cutting spending. keep in mind the last minute agreement is just a stopgap measure, it is not law until the president signs it sometime today. the stopgap measure will keep the government open until next friday. the final agreement should be aroved by next week. new this morning, new developments in the investigation into an explosion at a southern california synagogue. investigators say the blast that first looked like an accident now looks to be intentional. santa monica police now say that the shabad house is the victim of a pipe bomb. that bomb sent shards of concrete into a building next

door. >> he's a transient, he kind of visits local synagogues asking for charity. >> police initially thought that the blast was a natural gas line explosion, but now they say the blast likely originated in a plastic trash barrel filled with pipe, concrete and explosives. the synagogue is in a residential neighborhood, but fortunately no one was hurt. police are still looking for that 60-year-old suspect this morning. outside of oakland this morning, an update on the murder of the beloved restaurant in the fru fruitvale district. the motive may be robbery. >> reporter: outside the mexican restaurant in oakland's fruitval district, we saw juan praying. >> sometimes an example has to

be made so people can kind of get it that it's not the way to keep on living. >>. >> reporter: he is mourning the shooting death of well known restaurant owner jesus campos. he was gunned down at around 5:30 as he was opening for business. >> we have two suspec-- some me believe campos was targeted because he used to own a check cashing business next door to his restaurant, a business that traditionally handles a lot of cash. juarez says he sold that business a couple of years ago. >> this is a business that actually enabled a lot of families to actually have a lot of place to live and enabled a lot of families to have something to eat at night. >> reporter: campos's killing brings feelings of anger because they have been asking for more

police protection. >> there was really no solutions, just promises that things will get better. guess what, this problem of criminal activity and criminal enterprises in this area of oakland has been going on for many years. >> that's why juan will continue to pray for campos and his family and for an end to violence in the fruitvale district. >> the latino merchant's association is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of campos's killer. the police department is also offering a $10,000 reward. this morning a man suspected of a sexual assault is on the loose as sheriff's deputies want your help to track him down. this is a surveillance photo. take a look, it was released by santa cruz sheriff's deputies which shows a suspect walking through the door of a convenience store. deputies say the man sexual assaulted a woman after offering

her a ride. this morning, one giants fan is clinging to life at a los angeles hospital. san francisco fans showed their support for him before the giants home opener. brian stow is a father who was beaten at last thursday's game against the dodgers in l.a. he is in critical condition and doctors say he may have suffered brain damage. he is back in a medically induced coma. with giants players on the field and the ballpark packed with fans, the giants honored stow with a moment of silence yesterday. friends spent the day before the game selling t-shirts to help with medical bills for stow. >> i think it's going to put a smile on his face, he's going to be humbled by it all. >> on monday t giant also dedicate their first home game against the dodgers to stow, collecting donations for a fund-raiser to help him and his family.

drug scheme involving a narcotics task force commander and a private investigator. this morning a third man will now face conspiracy charges as well. that man is former sheriff's deputy stephen tanaby, pictured here. he joins the narcotics commander norman welsh and private investigator christopher butler. butler allegedly gave steroids he had gotten from welsh to sell. >> he is charged with three counts of conspiracy. conspiracy to sell steroids. conspiracy to obstruct justice. conspiracy to falsely arrest. >> tanaby has told nbc bay area that he's not guilty. the investigation is ongoing. and new this morning, the cross border violence between israel and gaza continues to heat up this morning. the israeli military says it

launched air strikes against two armed militant groups from hamas early this morning. they say the air strike was in retaliation for the 15 rockets fired into gaza. hamas gunman fired a missile at an israeli school bus. two teens were injured. know a story you will see only on nbc bay area, we take you inside a top secret prison in iran through the eyes of a south bay man who's sharing the detail -- what led to his capture and what the secret to his survival was in that prison. why one man is now free while others are still in confinement. >> reporter: they say every picture tells a story. the story this one tells though, is not complete until you hear

just where it was taken and by whom. >> it was a completely vast, open landscape and there was only electrical towers and i just thought, wow, amazing silhouette. >> reporter: andrew barber is the photographer, iran is the location. >> they said basically you're guilty of espionage. >> reporter: this picture landed barber in an iranian jail for 458 days later summer. they said only spies take such pictures. his hearing was over in a matter of minutes. >> there was three of them, i thought they were driving me to the airport and they drove me straight to the prison. the doors opened up and closed basically. >> reporter: to understand the situation, you first have to understand how he lives. he left his south bay home and has been on the road ever since. he talked to us via skype from

thailand. >> i just wanted to live and to see places. >> reporter: barber says that after so many years and so many different countries he was always looking for new landscapes and he has already heard about the people if not the government of iran. >> it's history and it's people and i just wanted to see it. >> reporter: barber took the picture in question from a train. he was picked up and within 48 hours was in iran's prison. kept isolated for more than 23 hours a day, barber's only company is the hum of a fluorescent like he couldn't turn off. he says he was not tortured but not knowing whether she was in for one day, or one year or for the rest of his life is torture of a different time. >> it's classified as the white torture because you don't know anything that's going on, and you have no idea whether somebody knows you're there, mentally it's very hard so the idea is just to turn yourself

off. >> and two months in, as quickly as he was taken in, he was let out into the custody of the british ambassador. the story very similar to the three berkeley hikers but there's differences to why he's free and they are not. first he has dual citizenship, the united states and great britain and britain does have diplomatic ties to iran and the united states does not. barber doesn't know if there's anything he can do on the outside to help the hikers. he's reached out toheir families but has not h back. as for his life, it won't change, he says, he'll still travel and would one day even like to go back to iran, if they would ever let him. while we have much more ahead coming up on "today in the bay."

anchtsd we want to get a look at our forecast with rob because it is giants game day today. >> this evening, it will be a bit cool and breezy, but it should be dry, then as we head into sunday, we'll see temperatures probably creeping into the low 60s with increasing high clouds. then into the afternoon a dry weekend and one which will see those temperatures finally getting up over 50 degrees. that area of low pressure that brought in all the low pressure, temporarily, high pressure building in to get the weekend started. you may notice some high clouds coming in for sunday afternoon heading on into monday and by the way, monday should be the best chance of seeing showers

around the bay area, this will be as the system kind of drops into the north bay, mainly into san francisco and temperatures actually staying pretty mild. we should see those numbers mostly in the 60s as we go into the next few days. the future cast, increasing clouds to wrap up the weekend, throw we're not expecting showers, we should see the showers come in on monday. as we kick off the weekend, the temperatures should be in the mid 60s, this is an improvement of about five or eight degrees with highs only in the mid to upper 50s. so the numbers finally starting to come up. this should be the sunnier of the two weekend days, but sunday not all that bad. we'll see some mid and high level clouds coming in for the afternoon. there you see monday, a chance for a few showers there, and kis are clear, we warm off little bit an those temperatures rebound some as we head towards the middle part of the week.

a very good morning to you, picking up where they left off last year, this giants team, again, not for the feint of heart. a thrilling home opener with the cardinals. brian wilson climbing the outfield wall, literally to chaise the championship flag, also in the outfield, pat the bat has four hits on the season, three of them have been home runs, but the cardinals seem to have it in for brian wilson who came in with the bases loaded and let the go-ahead run through. it would have been a shocking and bitter end to a fun day, but sandoval with some timely hitting, brings in rowan with a pinch-hit single. for the second year in a row, rowan comes up with a hit to win it. the come back victory, 5-4, the giants start and finish in style. >> the only negative thing is that my era went to a billion

live look at the bright blue skies of san francisco this morning a beautiful way to start the day, thanks so much for joining us. let's take a look at your forecast with rob. >> the morning is starting out pretty chilly, but at least most of the wild weather now is diving into southern california, eventually spilling over into southern nevada as the system that brought the highly, the thunder and even a few cold air thunderstorm sightings is now move ag way from the bay area, we have a cool start to the day, but probably the sunnier of the two weekend days, by lunchtime we'll see those numbers getting into the 60s, eventually getting into the mid 60s for highs for most of the bay area, still upper 50s to low 60s around san francisco and the coast today. tomorrow expecting to see a few extra clouds, dry for the weekend, here comes a chance of showers mainly north of the golden gate as we get back to the workweek.

a sign of the times, these folks have been waiting since midnight for some of the free medical, vision and dental services that are being offered at the oakland coliseum today. this morning we have a so-called miracle food that may have you thinking more and weighing less. introducing the japanese miracle noodle which are selling like hot cakes online. the color and feel resemble jelly fish. they're not really noodles at all, but an asian root that date back more than 2,000 years.

the week in weather that was. it was pretty interesting around the bay area. this snapshot, you can see the studio parking lot, looking up to the convective shower that had some rotation to it. at times it looked like we almost had a cold air funnel cloud trying to form very briefly for a minute or two before this particular cell weakened before it move offend to the east. you can see the environment we had over the last couple of days, it was the trigger for some pretty active showers and some hail. but now this pattern is starting to move off to the east, which is obviously some good timing for the giants games. this evening it will be a bit cool and breezy, but it should be dry. as we head into sunday, we'll see temperatures probably creeping into the low 60s with increasing high clouds. you'll see those temperatures coming up a few degrees unlike the weather have have had over the last few days. >> temporarily high pressure
