the threat of rain not so threatening after all, right, christina? >> depending on where you're waking up this morning, but overall we're not expecting anything heavy. definitely not enough to wash your car. so if you were hoping for the showers so you didn't have to wash your car, unfortunately we have bad news for you this morning, just some light rain. maybe a tenth of an inch up in the north bay and maybe a couple of hundredths in the east bay but nothing measurable down in the south bay. we're going to stay mostly dry today. 50 in hayward, 45 in sunnyvale. much cooler this afternoon. i've got your complete forecast coming up. but first let's get you to work right on time. 6:00 a.m., how does it look, mike? >> it looks like it's starting to slow down. a nice drive through livermore, dry roads as you're talking about but sunol there's an issue heading into fremont for 680. the bay bridge a smooth drive. giants game tonight, keep that in mind. a live look at 24 holding steady with the flow of traffic but

further over towards the toll plaza we're seeing all the roads getting a little more crowded. back to you guys. >> thanks, mike. students across the country will take part in what has been dubbed a day of class action, protesting state budget cuts the to education. there will be several events on california campuses today and marla tellez is live at cal state east bay with a look at what's going to happen there today. >> reporter: good morning. this is all tied to the severe budget crisis that's affecting california and how it is affecting higher education in turn. now here at cal state east bay, we found some flyers like this posted around the campus. let me giff you a look here. it says "take class action." as you mentioned, brent, this is the the day of class action. it says join us in demanding quality education. to encourage students they're providing free organic ice cream. i'm sure that will hook some people today. the goal of today is to keep higher education affordable,

especially for low income, first generation and minority students. also to prevent more tuition hikes and to protect fair contracts for university employees. the day of class action is being sponsored in part by the california faculty association, which says the system has already endured $1.5 billion in cuts. it's lost more than 3,000 faculty members, while student fees have tripled in recent years. so today all sorts of event are planned at the 23 cal state campuses across the state. you can expect rallies and demonstrations, walkouts, teach-ins and poetry slams all to send a message to the chancellor, to school deans across the state. as i mentioned, this is happening at all 23 campuses throughout california, so you can expect demonstrations at san francisco state, san jose state, sonoma state, for instance. and also not just here in california, as brent mentioned,

all across public universities across the country today. now, this is a prelude, brent, to the launch of a national campaign by faculty organizations nationwide on may 17th. the national campaign for the future of higher education officially at a news conference in washington, d.c. brent. >> all right, thanks a lot for the update there, marla. san francisco faces a $306 million budget deficit and people can talk to the interim mayor about it today. mayor ed lee will host a district 10 budget town hall meeting along with supervisor malia cohen. they will answer questions about what's being cut and how to try to fix the mess. the meeting is tonight at 6:00 in the genentech hall auditorium at ucsf mission bay. six men and boys well be charged today in connection with the gang rape and beating of a teenage girl outside of a richmond high school homecoming dance. the arainment comes after a 20-day preliminary hearing which

included testimony and evidence from 20 witnesses. the defendants range in age from 10 to 44. they are accused of beating, stripping, raping the girl. they found the girl partially naked under a picnic table. could a bay area murder suspect be responsible for the so-called alphabet murders of the 1970s? this morning a special task force is looking for any possible lynx between joseph naso. he will appear in court this afternoon to face charged of murdering four women in northern california. all four of those women had first and last names which starred with the same letter, which some say is strikingly similar to the alphabet murders which happened in the new york area. two san francisco teenagers accused of murdering a 16-year-old will make their first appearance in court today. andy zeng was found shot to death in a home over the weekend. neighbors say the room had been

doused with gasoline. police originally arrested four teens in the death but released two of them. a 15-year-old will be charged with shooting the boy and he and an 18-year-old, jimmy lee, will be charged with attempted arson as well. concerned parents spoke before the san francisco school board last night saying that teens are killing teens and something has to be done. >> we lost a life. and i know the family is devastated and all the classmates at thurgood marshall high school. also the middle school that he attended. >> police have not said what may have led to the death. a man is charged with felony dui after a crash in sonoma county. that is after he and his family somehow survived this accident off of highway 1 near bodega bay. the driver had two family members, including a child in the car. he lost control and that car plunged about 100 feet. a witness called 911 and crews pulled them all out of the car. regulating medical marijuana

is becoming a nightmare for san jose city council members. city leaders are trying to figure out how to regulate pot clubs. there are more than 100 of them in san jose, but the proposed limit would be 10. city leaders tried to impose limits and set some rules yesterday, but the only thing they could agree to is where the clubs would be located, in industrial parks or commercial districts. the city is still trying to decide who gets licenses and how they will operate. >> 6:07. it is certainly a distinction we do not want. gas prices in california now the highest in the nation, and prices are expected to just keep rising. this morning in santa clara, we found gas stations selling a gallon of regular unleaded for $4.49, $4.39 in these pictures. gas on average is going for $4.23. last year gas was just $3.19. in san jose you'll have to pony up about $4.19 compared to $3.11 a year ago. in oakland, gas is $4.18.

$3.10 last april. the oil industry says taxes, seasonal blends and refinery problems have driven up all of the prices as well as unrest in the middle east. commuters in the south bay will soon have a place to buy electric cars and it's not in an auto mall. bob redell is live in san jose with a look at tesla motors new store. very unique place, bob. >> reporter: yes, laura. here at santana row in san jose just a few shops down from gucci, you'll find the brand new tesla motor dealership that will actually have its grand opening this weekend. you come in the showroom and if you're not familiar, this is the world's fastest electric sports car. it is the tesla roadster. it will cost you a little bit, just north of $100,000. kobe brooklyn with tesla motors. when i first heard that you were opening a dealership, i was surprised because you hear about everything going on in the economy.

why now? >> well, we are trying to get our name out everywhere we can. this is a new strategy opening stores in high foot traffic areas so anybody can come in and learn about tesla. it's to come in and learn about our technology and see what products we have coming down the road. >> reporter: you've sold 1500 units worldwide of the roadster. >> yeah. >> reporter: is that good? >> it's great. it's great. this is an expensive sports car so the interest we've seen is fantastic. it's been a way to introduce our technology so people can then find interest in our model s. >> reporter: which is not necessarily appealing to the luxury car buyer because it will be with the tax credit around $50,000 which is more affordable. how is that different than the roadster? i assume it's not zero to 60 in 3.7 seconds. >> no, it's a premium sedan and seat five people. it's still going to be a great car and really fun to drive. >> reporter: what would the range be? >> there's going to be an

light breeze. yeah, if you're a golfer, i'm speaking your language this morning. it's going to be gorgeous out there. saturday and sunday both look good. today not so great. in fact we have overcast conditions already setting up in the north bay. a few light showers pushing onshore but nothing heavy. we're not expecting to measure any significant amount of rainfall as we head throughout this afternoon. maybe if we do measure it will be less than a tenth of an inch in the north bay. i think maybe a spritzer is all we're expecting in the east bay and especially the south bay where we'll see the least amount this afternoon. the whole thing clears out by 2:00 p.m. and our temperatures aren't going to be quite as warm as yesterday. in fact about 10 degrees cooler on average so you'll need that jacket throughout the day. 45 in livermore right now, 45 in san jose, 44 degrees in santa rosa and 47 in the city by the bay. warming up to about 60 degrees later on today. we're going to walk you through your seven hi day and let you know what's coming up next week. that's on the way. right now mike following a serious situation.

>> yeah. we were very concerned there was a car fire reported in san jose. 101 at allen rock avenue. now, this actually the animation that i'm showing is much more serious than the situation. it is a car fire. some flames were seen on this camaro but we are not looking at any injuries. it is off on the shoulder and there should be a tow truck heading over. the person involved is okay. that will be a distraction just north of the 680 interchange. watch for some slowing but so far no issues for 101 or 680. we'll see slowing there in 20 minutes. we'll end with this shot of southbound 680 around sheridan. we see an accident reported in your second lane so that's the slowing coming up the grade past the truck scales getting from sunol into fremont. >> auto do not want though flames on your camaro, no. the time now 6:12. still to come on "today in the bay" caltrain could be close to avoiding service cuts. plus the kings quest for a new calf could mean they're done in sacramento. we'll have a live report coming

delicious dunkin' donuts coffee. pick some up where you buy groceries. mm! america runs on dunkin'. good morning, everybody. 6:15 right now. a live look outside from the hp pavilion, downtown san jose. haven't seen the sharks for a few days. they'll be back in action tomorrow, playoffs begin. we'll keep you posted on your forecast and weather coming up. jurors will be back at it at the barry bonds trial today. they adjourned yesterday afternoon without reaching a verdict. deliberations will resume today at 8:30. bonds is accused of lying about using performance-enhancing drugs to a federal grand jury in 2003. the trial is now in its fourth week. chili's restaurants in northern california are doing their part to help a giants fan who was brutally beaten at a los angeles dodgers game on opening

day. bryan stow remains in a medically induced coma and is still in critical condition this morning. if you'd like to help out bryan stow and his family, all you have to do is go to a chili's today from 11:00 in the morning until 10:00 tonight. when you mention the bryan stow fund rare, 15% of your bill will be donated to his family to help with medical expenses. to-go orders count as well. sacramento's biggest sports franchise may play its last game in the city tonight. the kings could be heading south. brian hickey is live in sacramento with the details. brian, i started out my career as a sportscaster covering the kings when they came to sacramento, when arco arena was built. to think they could be leaving! >> reporter: it's huge news for sacramento and a major bummer. 26 years they have played here at what was the arco arena, now it's the power balance pavilion. the banner still reads "home of

the sacramento kings" but that may change. tonight the last game fittingly against the los angeles lakers. so it's going to be a huge game, it's a sold-out crowd, standing room only. the fans coming out to show their support to the kings and to say to the owners we do not want you to leave this city but the writing is on the wall. the kings have been in negotiations with anaheim and owners of the honda civic center down in anaheim and talking with them about moving down there. they're going out to new york city tomorrow to meet with the nba board of governors to discuss the relocation. the deadline for filing papers comes monday. kevin johnson will also be on that trip to new york, to tell the nba they believe the kings should stay here in sacramento. they believe this is a good market for the nba and should the kings leave sacramento, at least to prime the pump and set the stage for another team perhaps to come out here to sacramento. the major issue has been all along the lack of a new arena. the malufs want a new arena, many attempts have come and

failed. it all comes down to money and as of now there is nothing firm that we're going to break ground on a new arena and therefore they have looked elsewhere. it's not done yet but the fans coming out to say, hey, we want you to stay here. when it's over, it won't exactly be over because the kings fans plan on holding a sit-in for 30 minutes after the game, again, as another show of support for the sacramento kings should they be leaving. it's certainly going to be one big game tonight. >> and they do have an ally in the mayor, kevin johnson, a cal guy, nba all star and so he's a basketball guy. we'll see what they can do. thanks a lot, brian, we appreciate it. meantime, though, the kings opponent last night kind of -- may have been an omen of things to come. they lost to the oklahoma city thunder. the thunder, the last nba team to change cities. they used to be the seattle sonics and left for oklahoma city back in 2008. we will see what happens. kings and lakers tonight. >> it will be interesting to

watch. no thunder and lightning in our neck of the woods. a little bit of rain of though, christina has a look at the forecast. >> a little bit of rain but nothing we're calling a washout by any sense, but we are talking about overcast conditions. not a lot of sunshine today. so if you wanted to get outside, today is probably not the best day for the beach. tomorrow a great day to the beach, this weekend even better. thursday warmer with plentiful sunshine. high pressure builds back into the area. that's going to bring our temperatures up about 10 degrees and this weekend really nice conditions as we continue to push through the weekend and continue to push into spring. our temperatures are climbing. our seasonal averages right now, right around 65 degrees but those will continue to increase the next couple of months as well. we're talking about the 80s next week. if you can hold on through the low 60s today, we will continue to climb in temperature and it will get warmer around here. good news, especially if you have a high heater bill. here's what we're expecting right now. a little cold air pushing in along with shower activity up in

welcome back, everyone. what a beautiful live look outside at the golden gate bridge. one of my favorites, one of many across the bay area. >> let's check in with mike and take a look at the morning commute this morning. >> laura has various favorite sglijz . >> oh, no, the bay bridge is my favorite. >> sunol, the southbound side a disabled vehicle. the vehicle just cleared from the roadway. look how quickly those taillights are moving much better heading towards fremont. so a nice, pleasant drive coming out of the area. that's good because of out of pleasanton we have slowing coming off 580 down 84 as well. this is a wednesday, a lighter flow of traffic. just an 18-minute drive but that will continue to build over the next few minutes. we'll get a look towards the maze and a smooth drive towards the bay bridge. the san francisco giants playing at 7:15, the third of three games against the dodgers. the warriors are playing on 880 -- not on 880, just off of

880. a live look out there shows you highway 24. volume really kicking up over the last five minutes coming out of the caldecott. we'll see slowing at the toll plaza and metering lights in a few minutes. well, caltrain certainly chugging along. they're certainly moving along toward a new funding plan that would prevent service reductions and fare increases. they need to come up with $3.5 million, certainly a far cry from the $30 million hole it once faced. caltrain will meet with the metropolitan transportation commission today to try to figure out where that money will come from. caltrain says it was able to shrink its budget gap thanks to record ridership and money from san trans, muni and the santa clara valley transportation authority. well, it is a dangerous job but somebody has to do it and today the people who keep our highways clean and safe will be honored. the 21st annual worker memorial

will honor highway workers who lost their lives during their work on state highways. they'll place a rose on top of a memorial rock. 175 caltrans employees have been killed on the job since 1924. today's memorial starts at 10:00 at the caltrans office in san luis obispo. >> always slow down and look out for them. could mark zuckerberg have to give up most of his fortune. scott mcgrew says new e-mails have come to light casting doubt once again on who owns facebook. >> just a day after facebook got a controversy behind it, a different person from zuckerberg's past, a convicted fron named paul siglia pops back in. he has been in and out of court claiming he owns 80% of the business. siglia says he didn't remember that until just recently when he accidentally game across a contract proving it. he now says he's stumbled across

old e-mails between then harvard student mark zuckerberg and himself, like this one, where zuckerberg complains siglia's 80% ownership is too much and says i'd like to suggest we officially return to a 50/50 ownership. facebook denies any of the e-mails are actually real. the federal trade commission may look into complaints from parents that games and apps like farmville or the smurfs encourage kids to spend their parents' money. what happens is parents hand over the phone or the laptop to kids, not realizing when kids buy seeds on farmville or costumes or virtual goods, the parents are billed real money through paypal or itunes. the "wall street journal" says a congresswoman from massachusetts has asked for a full investigation. i looked through our archives and found at least one example of a family that ended up with a $1200 bill based on a smurfs game. that's going to be a shock when you get your itunes bill. >> the same thing happens with cell phones and texting.

let's check that forecast today with christina. >> good morning to you. well, depending on where you're waking up, we do have a little shower activity sneaking on shore along the peninsula. it looks like redwood city just got a little spritzer. we will see overcast conditions today. i think the biggest component from the storm pushing through will be colder air. it will also be breezy today. we're only going to end up in the 60. i've got your complete forecast coming up but first you may have to head out the front door right now. >> despite the spritzers that you're talking about, no major delays. look at highway 4, this is unusual that 52 is the only slow spot woe see just off of hillcrest and the slow spot over towards l street has cleared up. so speeds near 55 in that area. we have more slowing out of the altamont pass than we do in antioch. speeds in the 40s and 50s coming through livermore and clear toward the dublin interchange. over towards the bay bridge toll plaza, no metering lights yet. this is just after 6:30 so that's unusual as well.

a light volume but it's picking up now. back to you guys. 6:32 right now. tesla motors will soon make it easier for south bay motorists to buy one of their electric cars, or at least go window shopping. bob redell is live at santana row with a look at their brand new store. good morning, bob. you putting your order in? >> reporter: i think i'll be doing more window shopping, i'm not quite there at that price point yet. the world's fastest electric sports car. they are going to run just over $100,000. this is their 18th showroom worldwide. tesla motors opening it up this weekend at santana row. if you walk in, you might get a sense there's a familiar feel to it. george blankenship is the man behind this design. so you can come into the store, pick out, do a predesign of your car. i like the car, not necessarily a big fan of the color. let's go with orange.

and -- pretty cool, huh? from the small screen to the big screen, come over and get a look at your car and that's what it looks like on the road by my ranch after i buy this car. if i have a ranch, i'll have an oil refinery. i look at the economy out there and i wonder why is tesla so confident to be opening up another store given the the fact that we're not in boom times. >> well, we're seeing a lot of interest with model s. we're actually getting reservations right now. also this store is for us to get in front of the public and to invite people to come and learn about the store and learn about tesla's technology. >> that's the roadster, the one you have right right now, which is just north of $100,000. you mentioned the model s. that is the sedan that will be roughly around $50,000 when you

start rolling out next year. anyone who drives up 880 is familiar with the old plant that you're converting to yours. how's that going? >> it's great. we are retooling it now and getting it ready for model s production which will begin next year. >> with the earthquake and tsunami in japan, did that have any effect on your parts supply? >> we aren't having issues with supplies. we feel for japan and we have partners there and customers and colleagues there, but as far as supplier, we're doing okay. >> and a single charge on the sports car is 245 miles, you guys, zero to 60 in 3.7. not fast enough for me, maybe it's enough for you, brent. what would be the single charge be on the model s. >> it will go up to about 300 miles. >> so the grand opening this weekend on santana row. you want to see something really, really cool? check this out. there's the outlet where you

join us in demanding quality education." i know that there's an 8:00 rally scheduled today. the 11:30 walkout will be followed by a noon time poetry slam outside the bookstore here. not just happening across cal state campuses here in this state but also at public colleges and universities throughout the nation today. brent. >> thanks a lot, marla. if you go to a nightclub in san francisco soon, it might look a little bit more like airport security checkpoints as you go inside. the entertainment commission is considering some new safety measures, including metal detectors and i.d. scans. the proposed rules come after a streak in violence at san francisco nightclubs, but bay area civil liberties groups say those proposals are draconian and unconstitutional. getting caught on your phone without a hands-free device while driving could soon become a moving violation. that's new legislation being discussed in sacramento. the law was proposed by a state

welcome back, everybody. early this morning we showed you this video of a cat named max who had been shot in the head with an arrow but he lived and he is fine. it happened in santa cruz county. max had disappeared for a few days but then he went back home with this arrow in his head. they took him to the vet. apparently it did not fracture his skull. overall max is just fine. >> but we want to talk to max's owner, nancy. we joins us live on the phone this morning. good morning. thanks for joining us so early. >> good morning. >> how is max? >> he's recovering really well.

he's at home. i have to actually take him to the vet this morning for a follow-up to make sure everything is good. but he's ready to go back outside already. which won't happen, by the way. >> he's going to be an inside cat, huh? >> yeah. >> so did it just go through his scalp or something? what happened? >> it actually ended up going straight through his ear. it was low on his ear so it went through a little bit on his head, but it was above the scalp, just under the skin. >> what did you think when you first saw him with an arrow through his head? >> honestly i couldn't look at him. my husband was the one to inspect him because i was so distraught and upset about it. even when we took him to the vet, you know, they had sedated him and given him pain medicine. they said do you want to come back and say good night before we do the surgery and i couldn't do it. i was like, no, i'm see him

after you remove it. >> it could be tough too for the viewers but the good news is he's okay. do you have any idea how it happened or where or what went wrong? >> we don't know. he went out friday night and didn't come back home until sunday evening. we had assumed something bad had happened because he always comes home in the morning to eat. so we just don't know. that's the other disturbing thing is we think this person could possibly live like within houses of us. it's just a matter of whether or not they come forward or animal control people can find out who did it. it's really sad. >> it is, it is. an innocent little animal like that. we're so glad that max is going to be okay, though. >> yeah, he's great. he's actually doing awesome. >> how old is he? >> he's three. >> three. he looks like a really healthy, good little kitty. >> yeah, he's a good cat. >> well good, for you. >> thanks for joining us and we are so glad this story has a pretty good ending to it, a
