nearly $4 million in artwork at the terminal two is open for business this morning. kimberly is live with a look at the changes. kimberly. >> it is open for business. there's still finishing touches that need to be done. permanent signs need to go up. it's fully operational here. huge signs are guiding them into terminal two this morning. the first flight set to depart at 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. we talked to the first to use the terminal. they said it is spacious and beautiful and they are excited to see more of it. >> i think it makes you proud to be from san francisco. it's a nice place to welcome home and welcome to our country different people from all over the world. it serves us well. it's beautiful. >> reporter: over a decade ago,

it served international flights and its brand-new state of the art building home to virgin america. 14 gates and over 30,000 square feet of space including a dozen restaurants, nine stores and spa facilities. over 3 million passengers are expected to use terminal two in the first full year of operation. the first flight is set to depart in an hour from now. live in san francisco international airport, today in the bay. >> thank you for the update. a man remains in the hospital with life-threatening conditions this morning after suffering third degree burns. it happened late wednesday afternoon at an adult bookstore. he ran outside the building engulfed in flames. firefighters in the area were able to put the blaze out. arson investigators are looking for a cause. an east bay teenager is

pleading guilty to killing a man outside a burger king over the weekend. he stabbed a 20-year-old man to death in a burger king parking lot. the lawyer says it's possible the teenager stabbed the man in self-defense. now, he's being held in jail on $1.3 million bail. a new description of the man accused of sexually assaulting a grad student. dark skin possibly asian-indian. a chubby build, short wavy black hair with a rounded nose. he smelled similar to apples. the assault happened saturday night at the escondido village. he ran away when she screamed. bonds lawyers have asked a judge to throw out the guilty

verdict on charges of obstructing charges. a hearing on may 20th will be held to decide the issue. in the meantime, the federal government must determine whether or not to spend more time and money to retry bonds on perjury charges. bob redell is live with how much it cost the first time arnold. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. the prosecution are looking for advice on how to proceed. they have plenty of opinions on the streets early this morning in san jose. right now, the trial is estimated to cost somewhere around $6 million. barry bonds is paying around double to three times as much for his defense. so, what's going to happen now is the prosecution is going to meet and try to determine do they want to retry barry bonds on those three counts of perjury because he was -- there was a

hung jury on that. sir, do you have an opinion on barry bonds? we have a guy here filling himself up for the morning to see if he had an opinion on this. we were able to find people earlier. believe me, it's not wishy washy. it's yes or no. here is what they were thinking on whether they should retry him on the counts of perjury. worth spending more to retry him on the charges? >> not really. it's just for entertainment. >> reporter: you are saying this is strictly for entertainment. you don't think there's any value? >> i don't think so. >> if he committed perjury. >> reporter: there's a lot of people saying it cost a lot of money. does that affect your opinion at all? >> i don't know, would it affect it for anybody else. i think he should be treated like anybody else would be

treated. >> reporter: barry bonds was convicted on one count of obstruction of justice. it carries a ten-year sentencing term. no one is suggesting he is going to see the behind the bars of a prison cell but what is likely, if this convict is not overturned, he could fasz house arrest. >> you better get out of the way of people. don't get in the way of people and their doughnuts, bob. >> reporter: apparently not. my goodness. >> we'll check back with you. members of a state safety commission could decide to accept a deal to monitor the pg&e gas lines. under the deal, they would fine pg&e for failing to meet a deadline to hand over safety records.

they paid another $3 million if they can't turn it over by august. they make semiannual safety reports and let them monitor and track pg&e gas line projects. >> san francisco leaders want to hear the public's thoughts on the state of the city. mayor ed lee is holding a district eight town hall meeting at mission high school at 6:30. the public will get to hear about the budget process and other city services. they want to hear questions or feedback you may have. san francisco is looking into a program to let you hail a taxi cab with the push of a buttton. it lets smartphone users look at the map to see where the available cabs are. you push a button and the nearest taxi comes to youchlt one-third of people trying to hail a cab end up waiting at least 30 minutes or more. >> they make it sound way too

the bay area. as we head throughout the day today, that will be the case. the clouds are going to keep us warmer overnight. it won't be quite as cold. you might need to give your heater a break as we head out this afternoon. temperatures tomorrow morning in the 50s. right now, they are in the 30s. 36 degrees in gilroy. four degrees above freezing. warmer this morning in santa rosa and navato. we are expecting temperatures to dip for the afternoon. let's talk temperatures in the city. in the valley, 67 degrees. 68 in los gatos. as we head throughout the weekend, temperatures will climb toward 70 degrees. we are looking at a 70 degree weekend. a lot of sunshine sunday. the best day for outdoor plans. >> it's kind of lonely through the maze. that's good. it's a treat heading into the city. it's where we started a few

minutes ago. across the bridge, southbound out of the city, toward daily city, three or four car accident. avalon drive to daly city. more details as chp arrives on scene. an ambulance is headed out there. there's going to be further activity. they are both clear as well. coming from the peninsula side. 880 smooth. hayward is smooth off the bridge as well. the transition on the map shows the speed sensors as you come past the valley. eastbound we just saw a yellow pop-up. that means speeds dipping down. just the grade heading to caster valley. construction going on at san ramon and dublin areas. it's blocked until a half hour. we watch for that to clear. no problems out of the altamont pass.

headlines today. i'm so excited. iphone enthusiasts and nerds like myself are rejoicing on that news. today, we are watching futures dipping as wall street ended mostly flat yesterday. waivered around president obama's deficit speech and a fed report that shows economic growth remains moderate. oil is above 107 bucks a barrel reducing the two-day decline we saw. some momentum across the pond. we get data here on unemployment, price inflation and google is reporting earnings this afternoon. the dow rose seven points to 12,270. the nasdaq was up 16 to 2761. also foreclosure filings we are watching hitting a three-year low in the first quarter, dropping 25%. realty trac says that's mainly

because of a backlog of paperwork that lenders are working through following a halt in foreclosures last year amid probes into foreclosure practices. california accounts for a quarter of all foreclosure activity. all right. here is good news on labor front. the labor department says 3.1 million job openings were posted in february. it's the largest number in two years. competition is easing. four people on average are vying for each job versus seven back in 2009. openings rose sharply in acco t accounting and legal services in hotels and restaurants. an excellent note on the job front. >> very much. it will help in many areas. thank you very much. getting a charge out of the new electric car service. they will unveil three of eight charging stations in downtown

shower activity sneak in in the north bay. it will be light in nature. a 10% chance for the next few days because of that set up. 45 in hayward. 43 in sunnyvale turning to the upper 60s in san bruno. 63 nice day to hit the beach. i say wait for the heat of the day. mid-70s by sunday. that's the best day for outdoor plans other the course of the weekend. over to you. britain's ministry of defense releasing video of an air strike. a typhoon fighter jet hits over miz ra da, the only city where rebels are still holding out. it's under siege by moammar gadhafi. they are called for nato help. they took over, but haven't done a lot to stop gadhafi.

one month after the nfl lockout starts, both sides are going to return to the table. it's the first face-to-face meeting since the agreement expired last month dissolving it. how do they divide up the $9 billion in revenue. new steps taken to try to keep you safe in the air. the transportation secretary says starting today, a secondary traffic controller will be added to 27 towers that currently only have one controller on duty after midnight. now that decision follows yesterday's incident in which a lone controller fell asleep while a medical flight was trying to land. it was the fifth time in three weeks they were found asleep. having two people on the job

doesn't guarantee the tower will stay awake. >> the proof is in the cockpit. there are several cases where both pilots fell asleep. it happened to a flight to hawaii a few years ago. it may have happened to a northwest flight out of san diego that overshot minneapolis by 150 miles though the pilots deny they were sleeping. in the case of the tower, pilots don't need a control tower to land. des moines, iowa, if you land after hours, you do so without a control tower. really, really small airports like south county near morgan hill, they don't have a control tower at all. tech reporters started to turn in their reviews of the blackberry playbook. that's research in motion's ansz to the ipad. they say the battery doesn't live up to the company's promises. points out you still have to link it to your blackberry phone. it won't e-mail, for instance, without a blackberry phone

connection. research in motion has two ceos. the bbc interviewed one asking about the blackberry and the trouble they are having in india. they want them to open the incredibly secure network so indian officials can read the e-mail. the reporter asks do they have it worked out? >> it's over. interview is over. >> the interview is over. i expected him to say it longer than that. i thought it was a fair question. bbc, keep in mind, has lots of indian, middle east listenership. it's so good, lots of governments do not like their governments using blackberries. >> your statement is over. good news for east bay teachers, their jobs are safe. the first light out of san

good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us. i'm brent cannon. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's get started with a look at the forecast. it's going to be a nice one. >> it is. it's always nicer when we are this close to friday. it makes things so great around here. the temperatures are mostly clear. cold start because of the clear skies. all the heat from yesterday just escaped into the atmosphere. we are starting out chilly. we are going to end up in the upper 60s and the 70s on tap for the weekend. a cloudy start but no rainshowers. we are going to tell owe when the next chance for rainshowers comes into the mix and how warm the warming trend will bring us to the weekend. first, let's get you to work with mike inouye. >> it's a thursday. we are seeing more traffic on the roadway already. this unusual activity on the peninsula.

we have a sig alert and it's ond 5:31. one lane gets by, lanes two, three and four are blocked southbound 280 ledding to 380. crest over at 380. that's the alternate. the rest of the commute is building up in the next report. >> it is 5:31. oakland police are continuing to investigate an unusual homicide. a car pulled up to an ambulance crew. people in the car handed over a man suffering from a gunshot wound. after that, the passengers in the car sped off. the victim was taken to a local hospital where he later died. it happened a little after 8:00 last night at 17th avenue and international boulevard. barry bonds is guilty, but not as guilty as the federal

government would have liked. he was guilty of obstructing justice during a 2003 investigation. the jury said bonds did not cooperate with the investigators they stopped short of finding that he lied during that testimony. the jury was hung on three charges of perjury unable to reach a unanimous verdict. bob redell has a look at whether or not he will spend time in prison. bob. >> reporter: good morning to you brent. we imagine today the prosecution behind closed doors will try to come up with the decision on whether they should retry barry bonds on the three perjury counts. some people we spoke to think the federal government should let it go. we are on facebook this morning. i'm going to read off, april johnson says spare me. let it go and move on.

do they think they are rich or something? uplift our kids, education and let bonds get educated about lying. that was her words, not mine. the u.s. department of justice has spent $6 million in their prosecution of the giants slugger. do you think they should retry him? >> they have already gone this far so yeah. i don't see why not. keep going. it's a serious offense. >> reporter: you know, there are a lot of people out there saying it's not as serious as other crimes and it's already cost $6 million in that neighborhood. how do you justify that or what would you say to those people? >> lying in the courtroom is serious to me. i sago for it. >> reporter: are you a die hards giants fan? >> oakland. >> reporter: you're an as fan. are you a bonds fan? >> no. hate barry. i think i'm less bias because i'm not a giants fan.

>> reporter: an obstruction of justice carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison. no one thinks barry bonds will see the light of day inside a jail cell. instead, the worst they think could happen would be some form of house arrest. it should come as no surprise yesterday's conviction is the talk of talk radio this morning. sports talk radio. coming up at 6:00, we'll hear what they are saying on knbr. that's coming up. bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you bob. 5:35 now. an antioch teacher accused of molesting a student will be arraigned. charles redmond is charged with committing a lewd act on an eighth grade boy late last month. he faces charges of possessing

child pornography. he fled to mexico and returned to san diego with he was arrested. he taught at park middle school for the past 27 years. overwhelming emotions for several northern california families this morning as they see the man that police say killed their loved ones more than three decades ago for the first time. 77-year-old is accused of killing two women in the mid-70s and two women in the mid-90s. all of them had first and last names ending with the same letters. the body of roxanne auz found in 1977. her niece, named for her aunt, talked to us by phone. he hopes for closure for all the families and victims and a death sentence for him. >> caller: never been forgotten. none of us ever imagined any of my family to have imagined that after this amount of years that

something like this would come up and there would be, you know, a chance at closure. >> a special task force is investigating to see if he is responsible for the so-called alphabet murders in the new york area in the 1970s. he lived in that area during that time. it is 5:37. hundreds of oakland teachers are breathing a sigh of relief after the district decided not to lay them off. they say they will not issue final layoff notices to more than 230 elementary schoolteachers and 17 music teachers all of whom received pink slips. they are deciding what to do about middle and high school teachers as well as counselors. peachers without proper certification will be laid off may 13th. travelers traveling out of sfo are in for a surprise as

terminal two opens their doors. kimberly is live with a look inside. what do you think? >> reporter: it is beautiful. it is huge and spacious. everyone is excited about the newness of it all, passengers included and staff. traffic has been steady. the lines are moving along swiftly inside. so far, so good. the first flight set to take off in a half hour. this terminal offers a lot of passengers including 350 power outlets. if you rely on your computer, this is a big deal. this place has art exhibits with cell phone tours and a play area for children. there's a lot to do while waiting for the flight. it was built by the city and airport to compete and win airline services. it houses american airlines and virgin america. we talked with the passengers among the first to use this terminal and they are excited to be a part of it.

president's new 2012 budget proposal that includes defense and medicare cuts and tax increases. tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. with a look at the budget battle and how it's going to impact the 2012 presidential campaign. >> reporter: the president laid out what he thinks will reduce the deficit over the next 12 years beginning with 2012. republicans say it's the beginnings of a campaign speech. he's kicking off the campaign. what the president plans to do is cut defense, save money on medicare by negotiating drugs and other initiatives. the most controversial part is his plan to raise taxes on the wealthiest 2% of americans. president obama saying the most fortunate among us can afford to pay more. republicans say this was a re-election speech and the tax increases are a non-starter. the people he's talking about

are the job creators, the owners of small businesses trying to get america back to work. you mentioned this year's budget, the vote today on the deal over the weekend. it was supposed to save us $38 billion over 36 months. now, the congressional budget office says it's going to save less than 1% of that. live from capitol hill, i'm tracie potts, today in the bay. >> thanks. it is 5:45 now. details in the grizzly murder of a san francisco teenager are coming out. according to police, the 15-year-old boy charged with killing the 16-year-old says it was an accident. the teen claims he accidentally shot him in the back of the head and panicked. he called an 18-year-old to help him get rid of the body. lee suggested he cut it in half to make it fit in a garbage bag. the teenager says he could not do it so they doused the body in

gasoline. the boy did not enter a plea of murder. lee was charged with accessory to the climb and pleaded not guilty. police are looking for a group of men associated with hells angel biker gang who are wanted for a brutal attack. about ten gang members at a concert tuesday night chased a man thinking he was with a rival gang. the 35-year-old was stabbed multiple times and beaten. a south bay city council is concerned a water rate hike will leave some customers high and dry. they want to know why customers who live in the northern parts are paying more than users in rural south county zones? they want to raise rates for people in the north county by 9.5%. that would cost the average home over a dollar a month.

costs are lower in the south county because they don't have to import as much water there. there's less infrastructure to maintain. it cost cost people all over the bay area. people who rely on the reservoir are using 21 million gallons of water less these days than four years ago. that cuts into their revenue thachlt means the local public utilities could raise rates 16.5% per household. the giants are going to dedicate the month to brian stow. he was severely beaten after the season opener against the dodgers in los angeles. the san jose giants will collect donations for the rest of the month to help with medical expenses. a special tributte is planned for tonight's home opener at the municipal stadium in honor or brian stow. a dramatic water rescue

caught on tape. take a look at this. wi9-year-old john collins veered off the road and into a canal. he called for help and stood up through the sunroof until rescue crews arrived. they strapped him up. eventually, they lifted him to safety. you can see from the video, he appeared to be fine. what a scary thing to happen. look at all the crews. >> crazy rescue there. in the meantime, we want to check in with christina, looking at the forecast. >> nothing around here is as crazy as what we find in bakersfield. we are looking good now. clouds are streaming in from the pacific. they are going to hang out for us tooday. it's good news for us tonight. they will trap in the air. it will make for a nice night. you may not need to run the heaters. grab the jacket, we are headed
