it's 6:01 now. spas, restaurants and nearly $4 million of artwork, not a new downtown district but sfo's terminal. kimberly is live at terminal two to look at the changes. itis more than fresh paint. >> reporter: that's right. look at all these happy passengers. there are happy passengers and crew here alike. it is easy to be that way. there's room to walk around here. the line is moving swiftly inside and out of terminal two. huge signs of virgin america passengers with the first flight set to have taken off moments ago. we talked to passengers among the first to use the new terminal and say it is spacious and beautiful. they are exciting to see more of it. >> i think it's beautiful. i think it makes you proud to be from san francisco.

it's a nice place to welcome home and welcome to our country. different people from all over the world. i think it really serves us well. it's beautiful. >> reporter: over a decade ago, terminal two served international flights and closed. in its place, this brand-new state of the art building home to virgin america. over 30,000 square feet of retail space. 3 million passengers are expected to use terminal two in the first full year of operations. there's been a steady stream of traffic here since we got here at 4:00 a.m. people giving themselves plenty of time to check out all the new amenities. live at san francisco international airport, today in the bay. >> i guess you don't mind if your flight is delays if there are spa facilities. >> i guess now.

on to barry bonds. he is now a convicted felon. the federal government has to decide if it's worth the time and money to retry him on perjury charges. the jury found him guilty of obstructing justice. he faces ten years in prison on the guilty charge. experts say that probably won't happen. his defense team is asking a judge to throw that hearing out. federal prosecutors have to decide if they want to start over on the perjury charges. this is getting a lot of talk around the bay area this morning. for more on that, we want to check in with today in the bay's bob redell with what people are saying. >> reporter: yeah. at least when you go up to people and ask their opinion, most of them will give your opinion. as you said the prosecute thooz decide if they want to retry him. many people think that they

should let it go considering the cost of the trial. the department of justice spent $6 million in the prosecution of the giants slugger. what do the die-hard sports fans think? we went to knbr sports radio this morning to hear what callers are saying. surprisingly, since the verdict came out yesterday, this has not been that great of a topic of discussion as you might think. they are not calling in about this. not even e-mailing that much about it. according to one of the news anchors, sports anchors they are telling us it seems fans have moved on. >> a lot of people have moved on and don't get that emotional about it especially with a verdict that is hard to define. you know, people are saying is he going to jail? no. is he guilty? yes. guilty of what?

obstruction of justice. a lot of people are confused. i think most people are more into the giants playing the dodgers than the bonlds verdict. >> reporter: knbr bringing up the point of could barry bonds go to jail? theoretically, an obstruction of justice does carry a ten-year sentence. nobody is thinking that is going to happen. he could face time under house arrest. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, today in the bay. >> interesting. thank you, bob. it is 6:06 now. stanford police released a new description of a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman over the weekend. dark skin, possibly asian indian about 30 years old, 5'6" with a chubby build. short wavy hair with a round nose.

he had a scent similar to apples. the man fled when the woman screamed. an east bay teenager is pleading guilty. 19-year-old joshua stabbed a 20-year-old man to death in a burger king parking lot sunday afternoon. the lawyer says it's possible the teenager stabbed the man in self-defense. he's held in the martinez jail. this morning, members of a statety decision to appeal. the california public utilities commission would fine pg&e 3 million dlarls ffor failing. they would pay in the $3 million if they can't turn over enough records by august. they would make safety reports

and let state employees monitor and track their projects. san francisco leaders want to hear the public's thoughts. mayor ed lee will hold a town haul meeting tonight in the district eight at mission high school starting at 6:30. they can hear about the process. you can ask questions and offer suggests as well. it is 6:08 now. san francisco is looking into a program that lets you hail a taxi cab with the push of a button. the program lets smartphone users look at a map of available cabs. they would punch a buttton and the nearest taxi comes to them. one-third of people trying to hail a cab on a weekend night in san francisco waited longer than 30 minutes. it never fails, you are always wearing the heels that don't feel good. >> and the rain is coming down and it's crazy and you can't find a cab.

back in february, we all watched as people gathered in egypt's tahrir square demanding president mubarak leave office. the demonstrations turned ugly. 76-year-old mary thornberry watched it all from her apartment, trapped close to the square. she is certainly out and free this morning. she joins us to tell us more about her story. thank you for joining us. we are glad you are safe. >> it's a pleasure to be home and thank you for having me. >> tell us about the ordeal. we learned about your story and saw it unfold with lester holt on the "today" show.

you were armed with a rolling pin. >> that was one of the items. >> what else did you have? not much considering what the mob had. >> i had my walking cane and a kettle of boiling water that could be tossed if need be. >> what was happening outside your door that you could hear? >> well, originally, the doorbell was ringing continuously. knocking on the door. yellings in arabic. i did open the door about so far and there were several young males there that wanted water. i said i don't have water and i closed the door. i left the key in the lock. later on, the door was broken and one of the guys reached in and grabbed the key. >> how frightening. >> that's when i got the key and

kept it on my body. >> what would have happened had they gotten inside? would they have gotten the water and left or were you in great danger? >> i assumed i was. if they had gotten in the door, i would have been whopping. >> no messing with mary. >> that's right. >> you're going to go down fighting. >> that's right. >> the point is, you didn't go down. why were you there in the first place? >> i love egyptian history. my graduate degree is in egyptian history. i went down in the mid-60s and never came back up. >> isn't that something? >> when i retired from nursing, i went to egypt. it made sense. >> you have been there for a long time. you have been among the people. did you see this coming, this kind of revolution, this uprising we have seen all across the middle east now? were you there saying there's unrest here and people are not

happy and something could spark sometime soon. >> yes, i was not surprised by it happening. the extent that it took, i was surprised by that. i read a book about two years ago that was predicting this. >> so you sensed it, yet you stayed. you say you will return? >> yes. i love egypt. i love the egyptian people. >> this ordeal didn't frighten you? >> oh, yes it frightened me. i'm not quite stupid. >> i wouldn't say you are. >> in many of those circumstances many of the people you trusted and they get out of hand. how did you get out? nbc news crews were trying to reach you because of the mob and the danger they couldn't get to you. eventually, what happened? >> a very nice southwest flight

north but not so far to the north that we are not going lose the shower chances. we have a slight chance, 5% to 10% each day as we head through saturday as the storm track is sitting to the north. best chance for that is in the north bay. i think we are going to see a lot of sunshine across the bay area for today. the second half of the day in particular. 42 degrees in sunnyvale. 43 degrees in san jose turning to the upper 50s by noon as we break for lunch. peeling off the layer and the a.c. in your car as well. 67 in mor gan hill. the temperatures in the north milder. 65 in sonoma and 67 degrees today in santa rosa. if you are someone who likes to swing the club arnold around, we have a phenom mall weekend on tap for you. light breezes. temps in the 70s. you can't beat that.

the metering lights just turned on. we have seen a good volume of traffic coming up. the back up formed quickly over less than five minutes of the metering lights being turned on. that's a heavy flow. 880 itself is moving nicely but slow as well. north past the coliseum, a lighter flow. south all the way down into the

freezing in gilroy. it will be chilly. grab the jacket and dress in layers. as we head throughout the afternoon, upper 60s. we have the forecast coming up. let's get you to work with mike. >> good morning, christina. because it's 6:32 on the clock, typical slowing through antioch. speeds below 20 miles per hour. you may have seen a heavier volume off the antioch bridge. that is it for highway 4. livermore and out of the altamont pass, a heavier volume as well. 40s toward the pleasanton area. slowing around the interchange with 680 and 580. the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights turned on ten minutes ago. the fast track lanes with a back up in the middle. the 880 things calm down a bit. we'll see how that turns out.

barry bonds convicted of obstructing justice. people are talking act what happens next. bob redell is live with a look at the fan reaction today. bob. >> reporter: well, good morning to you, brent. as far as the case goes, prosecutors have to decide if they want to retry him. he was only convicted on obstruction of justice. this trial cost the federal government $6 million to far. you would think because of that, barry bonds would be the talk of the town here at doughnut shops for early risers or on sports talk radio. we stopped by knbr sports radio about an hour ago to listen to the die-hard giants fan call in expressing their opinion one way or the other. think about it, one of the greatest baseball players ever was convicted of a federal crime. to our surprise, this is not what fans are talking about.

it's as if they could care a less. >> we are really not getting a lot of calls. we really aren't getting a lot of e-mails on the topic, either. it shows me that interest in all things barry bonds cooled down recently, especially in the aftermath of the giants winning a world series. they have new concerns and priorities, celebrating this team, not the scandalous stuff that happened in the past. >> reporter: just had a guy off camera heckle me for bringing up the issue of barry bonds. barry bonds, as far as the conviction goes, if it's not overturned, the charge does carry a maximum ten years in federal prison. no one is thinking barry bonds will end up in jail. the worst case for him would be a form of house arrest. it's what the legal experts were saying. bob redell, today in the bay. >> thanks.

oakland police are continuing their investigation into an unusual homicide. a car pulled up to an ambulance crew. they handed over a man suffering from a gunshot wound. after that, the passengers in that car sped off. the victim was taken to a local hospital where he later died. it happened a little after 8:00 last night at 17th avenue and international boulevard. several emotions for california families this morning as they see the man that killed their loved ones three decades ago. joseph is accused of killing two bay area women in the mid-70s and two in the mid-90s. all of them had first and last names ending in the same letters. the body of roxanne was found in 1977. her niece, named after her aunt, talked to us by phone.

she hopes for closure. >> caller: it's never been forgotten. none of us ever imagined any of my family would have imagined that after this amount of years that something like this would have come up and there would be a chance at actual closure. >> a special task force is investigating to see if he's responsible for the alphabet murders in the new york area in the 1970s. he lived in that area during that time. it is 6:36 now. travelers flying out of sfo are in for a surprise as terminal two opens their doors and shows a make over. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. the first flight took off. the second expected to leave in a half hour. there's been a steady stream of people. the lines moving along very swiftly. not a long wait.

this terminal offers a lot for passengers including 350 power outlets for laptops. this has art exhibits with cell phone tours and a play area for children. there's a lot to do while waiting for your flight. the terminal costs $338 million and built in an effort by the city and the airport to compete and win new airline service. it houses american airlines and virgin america. we talked to passengers among the first to use a new terminal and say they are excited to be a part of it. >> it's in addition to the airport, obviously and probably very much needed. >> reporter: over a decade ago, terminal two served international flights. in its place this terminal was built. over 3 million passengers are expected to use terminal two in the first full year of operation. this place is eco friendly with

paperless ticket and preferential parking for those with hybrid cars. live at san francisco international airport, today in the bay. >> sounds nice. thank you. a teacher accused of molesting a student will be arraigned this morning. charles redmond is accused of a lewd act on an eighth grade boy. making inappropriate comments to minors. during the investigation, redmond fled to mexico. he returned to san diego and that is where he was eventually arrested. redmond taught art at park middle school for the past 27 years. 6:38. hundreds of oakland teachers. the oakland school district says it will not issue final layoff notices to 230 elementary schoolteachers and 17 music teachers all of whom received

pink slips. they are deciding what to do about middle and high school students. a south bay city council is concerned a water rate hike would leave customers high and dry. they want to know why customers who live in the northern part of santa clara county are paying more than those in the south county zone. the water district wants to raise rates by nearly 9.5%. that could cost the average household $1.69 a month. the district says the costs are lower in the south county because they don't have to import as much water there. there's less infrastructure cost and maintenance. >> turn on the sprinklers out there? is it going to be a hot weekend? >> not hot. perfect. temperatures in the 70s. it's a good call, turn the sprinklers back on if you turned them off. we are not expecting significant

rain until the end of next week. a 10% chance of light showers in the north bay. i'll show you why in a minute. cold start, mostly clear conditions. a warmer day on tap mixed with sun and clouds today. a nice weekend shaping up with temps in the 70s. you could hop on a bike this weekend. get outside if you can. clouds streaming in from the pacific making for a mix of sun and clouds out there. high pressure is going to keep us nice and dry for the most part. this is what's happening. the storm track is dividing the state of california into two. nice clear skies over southern california and clouds and showers in northern california. this is where it's going to sit for the next few days. the jet stream is not taking a hike until sunday. what that means is we are going to keep the clouds in the mix and maybe, just maybe a few light showers in the north bay. each afternoon we have that chance. it's going to be a situation where you see the sunshine and a

vehicle. a live look shows the volume earlier. a burst of traffic around high street. it's the only place we see slowing. the bay bridge tollway over to the 880, all the folks from oakland to the toll plaza. back to you. >> thank you very much. it's 6:41. lawmakers are finalizing a compromise on this year's budget. the battle over next year's budget is beginning. the president's 2012 budget cuts defense and medicare spending with tax increases. tracie potts is live in washington with a look at the hot button battle and how it's going to impact the 2012 presidential campaign. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. let's start with the 2011 budget, the one for this year. the weekend deal that prevented the government shutdown. today it's up for a vote. the congressional budget office says they are likely to save 1%

of the $38 billion promised in the compromise. moving forward, president obama says he's got a deficit reduction plan cutting spending at the pentagon, cutting medicare for savings there and raising taxes on the wealthiest 2% of americans. he says he will not extend the bush tax cuts again. the most fortunate among us can afford to pay more. republicans say they will not discuss tax cuts or tax hikes, i should say for any americans. they say we should be focusing on spending. this is a non-starter. if you raise taxes on this group, these are the people with the jobs, it's not going to be good for the economy. laura. >> it will be tough. still to come, find out who is getting nearly $1 million to leave their job. plus a look at changes at from s stadium. av los angeles,e live report from los angeles, coming up.

the san jose giants will dedicate the month of april to brian stow. he was severely beaten at a game. they will collect donations to help with his medical expenses. a special tribute is planned for

tonight's home opener for the giants at the municipal stadium in honor of stow. tonight's game is the first home game for the dodgers since the beating of bryan stow. our sister stadium is joining us live outside the stadium with what is going to be different tonight. john. >> reporter: when the gates open up, things will be a little different. is anybody going to notice and is it going to be much of an impact? we have been watching to see how things have been progressing since the home opener when bryan stow was badly beaten. they have a very strong feeling as to how to progress with security here at the stadium. we have been speaking with the police chief charlie beck here. they contracted a security firm that includes former lapd police

chief. they are doing what they can to make sure the folks that come here feel safe. that includes changing the way they look at alcohol sales. alcohol played a major role in what happened. they are looking at changing the last call time, the serving size and the prices to make it more expensive to make the drinking here come to a minimum. that's part of the plan. the other part of the plan is increased security. something that's been changed here at dodgers stadium. there's been a policy in the past that undercover officers would be unarmed. things are changing. lapd will staff it and a lot of changes as they make their way here against the cardinals. >> thanks a lot. the giants have a two-game winning streak making fans happy

new leader after working out a deal to pay the current manager $1 million to leave. she turned in her resignation yesterday. she worked for b.a.r.t. for 19 years. the b.a.r.t. board ousted her earlier but the meeting was deemed illegal. she worked out the $1 million severance package. they will name an interim manager as they search for her replacement. it is 6:56 now. a dramatic water rescue caught on tape. take a look. 93-year-old john collins veered off the road in bakersfield driving into a fence and canal. he called for help and help came. he had to wait, standing up through the sunroof of his car until they could get him out of there. they were able to lift him to safety. he looked to be okay. he was the former president of bakersfield college. >> interesting.
