i'm brent cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. laura has the day off today. let's get started with christina loren. good morning. >> good morning, guys. good morning to you at home. we are starting out mild. you don't need that jacket. temperatures are ten degrees warmer than where we were at this time yesterday. it's going to be a gorge day across the area. temperatures close to 70 degrees by this afternoon. i'll let you know how much warmer it will be for your weekend. steller conditions and your key report coming up. let's get you to work now. how does it look out there? >> good. one of the slowdowns might be because of the ski report. right now, an easy drive toward the bay bridge. a slowdown in both directions off 580. no accidents or incidents reported there. 880 moves smoothly now. the volume is starting to increase. this is heavier than i expected today.

no slowing on the nimitz right now. another milestone at the bay bridge. the new centerpiece tower is about to get taller. kimberly is live at the bridge this morning with a look at what's happening and if it's going to impact your commute. >> reporter: it should only impact your commute if you stop to watch what's going on. you can see the section we are talking act on the left side of the tower already being raised. this is a big step in getting the tower completed and the bridge seismically safe. we will see the tower grow taller as they set the steel segment on top bringing it to 495 feet. it's 94% of the final height. it's called the grillage. it sets on top of the four sections previously set. they are like legs which will

support the grillage. after the project is completed, there's one last piece left to be put in place. it will be done later on this year and bring the tower to 5 525 feet to the full height. cal trans officials say the $6.2 billion project is moving along and on schedule to be completed by 2013. again, crews will begin getting into gear and setting the fifth section of the tower at 10:00 a.m. this morning. keep in mind, it should not cause problems with your commute, but it's up to you if you want to slow down and check out what's going on on the side of the bridge. we urge you not to do that. today in the bay. >> thank you, kimberly. a new landslide forcing more closures on high way one. the latest closure is 64 miles south of carmel. it's unclear how long it will be

closed. crews need to fix it. it's been closed off and on in big sir. dog walkers in a busy san jose park are looking over their shoulders after they were attacked bay pair of pit bulls. a couple of pit bulls attacked a shepherd named shadow. you can see what happened to the owner. she stepped in to try to save her dog. these are pictures. her lip is ripped. she has bites on her leg and her hands are torn un. she's upset because she loft shadow. the dog had to be put down because his injuries were so severe. dog walkers we talk to plan to tell others to be cautious. >> they can attack us. we usually come here at night like 9:00, 10:00. animal control officers went

door-to-door to see if they know where a tan pit bull and a -- sorry, they scrolled on past there. where a pit bull live. they have not found either dog. jurors get a break in the chauncey bailey murder charge. the lead detective is expected to return to the substantial doubt. he explained why he did not record the first police interview. they are accused of killing bailey. he says brusard asked for privacy. it did not seem reasonable to leave a recording device in the room. he confessed later to shooting the -- confessed to the shooting. they are now on trial for bailey's murder. the deadly gas palestine explosion may have been triggered by a crew doing electrical work. a crew told federal and state

investigators they were working at a terminal and they turned off what they thought was an unused circuit breaker. when the breaker was shut off, it may have caused a power breakdown and a pressure surge on the pg&e pipeline in the peninsula. two hours before the san bruno gas line exploded. they are still investigating the blast. they will issue a final report in september. people in san mateo county asking a judge to declare elections illegal. asian americans and latinos filed suit claiming the counties at large balloting system is racially polarized and dilutes their power. this, according to a lawsuit, the two ethnic groups make up a quarter of the population. only one latino and no asian americans have been on the board of supervisors since 1995. there's no evidence they encourage racial bias and has anything to do with who gets

elected. we'll get a better idea next week how bryan stow is doing. doctors are slowly reducing his level of sedation and bringing him out of his medically induced coma. he will under go more testing to evaluate the extent of his head trauma. the outpouring of support continues for his family, giants ace tim lincecum donating $25,000 to help pay for his medical bills. meantime, new security measures are in place at dodgers stadium in the wake of the beating. police made 40 arrests last night. john is live outside the stadium with the details. john. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, a day after, everything is calm, once again. last night, it was crowded with people coming to see the game as

well as lapd officers. it was evident, lapd arrested 38 people last night. none for violent crimes. a series of strict security measures to assure the fans were safe after the brutal beating of bryan stow. he remains in a coma this morning. the l.a.p.d. police don't want a repeat of what happened to stow. safety and security is a priority. >> we are going to move forward and make sure these are permanent changes. >> this should not define the city. this should not define the team or this stadium. >> reporter: so his attackers

here is the set up. high pressure is in control keeping things clear in southern california. if you are headed there, it should be nice and warm for you. up in northern california, you can see places like eureka getting shower activity. it's bullsying the northern most portion of the state. for us, we are going to see the moisture sneak in. as it does, up in the north bay, spotty showers for the day. we'll have that chance tomorrow and sunday as well. 46 degrees in sunnyvale. 60 degrees in san francisco. 42 degrees in gill row turning to 64 by noon. when you get in your car for lunch, it's going to be nice and toasty for you. we rarely see this this year, it's been a year of extremes this is nice. 69 is the average for the east bay. it's about where we will be today. warmer than average up in the

welcome back, everybody. 6:14 now. a live look from chopper at the bay bridge. the commute coming into work in the city. also, the new tower is where they are doing construction. we have crews there taking a look at what's there. we'll have live reports on that in a bit. are you ready for the next earthquake or wildfire? red cross is teaming up with people to be prepared for disaster. they are holding a press conference in san francisco to improve readiness in more than 50 communities in northern and central california. red cross workers will host a rally to teach people about readiness through games and activities. a lodge in an air force base lifted off carrying the top secret payload for the recon

>> oh, i don't know. >> reporter: i look at it and it looks like a complicated process. is it easy or what is the hardest thing about it? >> you have to know the animal. >> reporter: how do you convince a sheep to let them do this to you. you have her in some sort of hold. >> it's how you hold them and how you handle them. once you get the hang of it, it goes pretty easy. >> reporter: how long does it take to sheer a sheep this size? >> about three minutes. >> can you get a sense of what the sheep, how they feel afterwards. i know it's a forced haircut, but do you get a sense they like it. >> they don't argument. >> reporter: that was a dumb question. quickly, one thing that's interesting, you can feel the oil in there.

high pressure firmly in control. taking the storm track to the north, but not so far to the north we are not going to see the showers sneak in over the course of the weekend. hey, beautiful weekend to make the plans across the state. in santa cruz, 70 degree weather. it's going to be gorgeous. because the storm track is further to the north, you are not going to see the cloud cover in santa cruz. if you want to hit the beach, that's the beach to hit. here is what we are talking about. north star has 14 feet of packed powder up there. temperatures are going to be cold. we are going to get snow over the course of the weekend. if you want to make those plans, it's still great skiing and snowboarding up there. here is what to expect for the morning. grab the jacket. 50 degrees in san francisco. 46 degrees in sunnyvale turning over to the upper 60s. 69 degrees in san jose. 67 in los gatos.

commercial airliner on the hudson a couple years ago saving the lives of everybody on board that plain. google is hiring and offering good paying jobs. it's not always good news. sco scott is here to explain why. investors look at the revenue and the amount of money is company spends. google said thursday afternoon revenue was up but expenses had skyrocketed by more than 50% as google hired thousands of new people and paid some of the top salaries in high-tech. google shares are under enormous pressure this morning, investors asking does googles new ceo have a plan or just spending? you know how you have to wait to get new releases on netflix and red box? they do that so you are tempted to buy the dvd instead of waiting to rent it. best buy tells news.com this

forecast. >> good morning to you. fantastic friday forecast shaping up for us. we are going to see gorgeous conditions this weekend. it's nice out there. we are significantly warmer than this time yesterday. a few showers are possible, why and where as we head out for the morning. for now, let's get you to work this morning with mike. >> it's friday light for the most part. the screen sensors are fine. at the bottom of the screen, a couple lanes are blocked by an overturned pick-up. approaching blossom hill road. watch for that. more folks see the back-up north out of morgan hill. the ripple effect we are talking about. a live look at the bay bridge, the back-up is starting to form. so far, no metering lights right now at the toll plaza. we are looking at another ten

minutes before they turn on. no delays approaching. back to you. the completion of the $6.2 billion bridge this morning. we are live at the bridge with a look at what's new now. kimberly. >> reporter: it looks like the work started to begin. the piece is being lifted. it's going to go on top of the bridge. it's being raised at the base of the tower there. once it is on the tower, it will grow 15 feet. this is the grill edge. it will sit on top of the four seconds previously set. this grillage will sit on top of the legs, so to speak. after it's completed, there's one last piece to put in place. that will be done later on this year. it will bring the central tower to 525 feet. we are moving closer to

completion of this which is scheduled to be done by 2013. of course, all of this is done in an effort the bay bridge is seismically safe. kimberly today in the bay. >> thanks a lot. san jose police identified a suspect in the third homicide of the year. they are looking for jamie soth of san jose. they say that he and his friends were in a parking lot of a strip mall when soth approached with a group of friends. they changed words. soth pulled out a handgun and shot, then ran. soth is a cambodian, 5'9", 180 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. he's considered armed and dangerous. a california woman is suing match.com claiming she was matched up with a sex offender. the woman says she was sexually assaulted during her second date

with this man. he's a registered sex offender in california. he's served time for sexual assaults against women. they are asking match to screen members. the site's attorney says that would offer a false sense of security to users. criminals get convicted because of evidence. more and more evidence comes from cell phone video. if you record a crime, could you be locked up? this is video taken by a man in vallejo saying he ended up in handcuffs because he used his cell phone to record an arrest outside his home. >> youtube. >> i'm going to take to phone as evidence. want to go to jail? >> jeff king says the 1980 privacy protection act and the first amendment of the constitution of the united states protects him.

>> they have recognized a first amendment right not to be interfered with by police because you are documenting police activity. >> the man behind the camera got a citation. police would not go on camera to explain their actions. they have seen the video and are investigating the officer. a successful pot bust for police after a yearlong investigation. they raided three home that is were converted to marijuana growing operations. they confiscated 1200 plants with a street value of $180,000. police got a tip last may about the operation. on april 8th, they raided the homes and arrested a 51-year-old and a couple other people. electricity meters were not being used at that home. police say they stole $200,000 worth of electricity from pg&e. get ready to pay more for gas and electric bills.

a $120 million rate hike over four years. this money will pay for the repair and maintenance of natural gas systems. the average residential customer will see their bill go up. now, in the next two or three years the charges could go north of $58 a month. the increase had been in the works before last year's deadly san bruno explosion. it's likely pg&e will ask for more rate hikes after the investigation settles. time is 6:37. we want to check the friday morning forecast. we have seen a few shots. beautiful sunrise. christina has the details. >> it is going to be so nice today. you will want to get outside if you have the day off. if you don't have the day off, getting to work this morning is easier. it's not as cold. no showers coming down. let me step out of the way to show an interesting set up. some people are going to get

shower activity, especially up in the north bay. the system is to the north. throughout the morning hours, this continues to be the case. this afternoon, we are going to see a bit of a dig here from the trough of low pressure. that could create spotty showers in the north bay. we are looking toward that. overall, a mix of sun and clouds over the area. temperatures will be able to climb toward the 70s. by this weekend, mid-70s in some cities. this weekend, santa cruz, if you can get out there, it's lovely. tahoe is looking good. on the chilly side. bring your winter gear with you. 174 inches above 7,000 feet. this late in the season, really, really rare. you can still enjoy it at north star. that's what we are looking toward. temperatures will be cool as you can see here. grab the heavy jacket. 46 in san mateo and 46 in santa cruz. by lunch, we are in the 60s. when the highs come in, closer

to 70 degrees. 69 degrees in san jose. just wait until i show you the extended forecast. it looks nice for this time of year. that's coming up. let's get you to work now with mike. >> friday light for the most part around the bay. northbound 101 past 85 in a split there. closer to blossom hill. the speeds are 20 miles per hour. an overturned pick-up truck. another got into an accident north of hellier avenue. some folks heading northbound on 85. it's going to increase the traffic and change the flow of the south bay. north on 101, it might be keeping things lighter as far as the volume goes. our photographer is out there. the live shot shows a lighter volume than we saw 20 minutes ago. it should pick up through the interchange off the area, looking smooth through san jose.

people all across america are feeling less economic stress these days according to the latest economic stress indicator. tracie potts is live in washington, d.c., with a look at what all this means. tracie. >> reporter: good morning. according to the stress meter, folks in the bay area are less stressed. the average score is 11. here is what they found. economic stress. things like not having a job, going bankrupt, losing your home. the stress level in the bay area, specific, a 10.40 on a

scale of 11. a little bit less than average. it's down month over month and from a year earlier. part of the reason they say, employment in your area down. foreclosures down. bankruptcy level and even though those levels are high compared to the rest of the nation, the fact they are on a downward trend seems to be good news. next door, the most stressed area, nevada, they have extremely high unemployment, really difficult time they have had in a couple years with foreclosures. their stress level on that scale, 11 being the average, they are a 21. compare it to us here in washington, d.c. a 6.6. >> that is is lot of stress. thank you very much. today is april 16th. today is emancipation day in the district of columbia. it's a holiday there. that means the irs is closed. because tax day can't happen on

to climb into the upper 60s and low 70s in some cities. the good news is this weekend it will be warmer. we are not expecting a lot of rain, maybe a little bit in the north bay. n nothing that is going to wash out your weekend plans. it's going to be pleasant. you will want to get outside if you can. we are dealing with a high pollen count for the next several days. we are in the red zone there. warmer than yesterday. by this weekend, the temps in mid-70s. high pressure keeping things clear for southern california. for us, we are sandwiched between systems. high pressure to the south. a big, big strong ridge of low pressure to the north. this is going to keep the storm track in just the right position for us to see the showers sneaking on shore. that's going to be the set-up. what's happening is a lot of the

moisture is colliding with the big dry ridge. that's going to be the case. a few sneakers as we head out for the weekend. santa cruz, get out there. 75 degrees on sunday. gorgeous conditions for skiing. should be nice up there as well. a little bit of snow. temperatures will be cold. when you are talking 14.5 feet of snow at this time of year, it's definitely something you want to embrace if you are a skier or snowboarder. 42 in gilroy. for the afternoon, it will climb into the 60s. 68 in fremont. 69 in san jose. a couple 70s on the map as well. 70 for gilroy and 70 up in napa. average temperatures usually, bless you, in the low to mid-60s. this is good news for us. we like to be above average. especially when it's been cold. you want to turn your sprinklers back on. we are not expecting significant rain. the temperatures climb into the

day to start your friday and weekend. a few clouds are going to be around. we are looking at nice temperatures. we are looking at overall a good commute. there are a few issues with the commute. >> look to me with the issues. we have a problem we have been talking about. an overturned pick-up truck. two vehicles had an accident blocking the lanes. talked about the potential for folks to 85. up to 87, we saw speeds dipping below 40 miles per hour for a short period of time. it sorted itself out. additional slowing until the accident clears. no word on how it will be from chp. we get a live look out there and how things are shaping up. no major back up. things will be slower later on. midday you see traffic. the metering lights are turned on. look at that. back up in the city. the metering lights are on and

tomorrow at sheep sheering day, 2011. this is at the forest homes farms off 680. patsy, biggest misconception about sheering sheep is what? >> people always ask if they are uncomfortable or being hurt. that's the misconception, they are not. they are comfortable when they are handled correctly. russ is an expert. >> reporter: is it like taking your kid to the barber for the first time. >> they forget about it quickly. >> reporter: how do you get the wool clean so it's ready to be spun. >> you soak it carefully in large tubs of water. you cannot agitate it or it will turn into a giant ball of felt. >> reporter: when you sheer them, what happens to the family structure afterwards?

>> it's funny. it's pitiful. they don't recognize each other at first. they run around looking for each other. >> reporter: they are naked? >> they are naked and they don't recognize them without their clothes. >> reporter: when you get the wool off, it comes out in a plan ket. it's pretty much one piece there. how much wool can you get from a sheep like this? >> this will have nine pound fleece, eight or nine pounds. >> is that a lot? >> it's medium. >> reporter: i want to show you something. did you see this? >> no. i grabbed some wool between live shots. what do you think? i just whipped it up. i had my knitting needles i was like i have ten minutes what am i going to do with all this time. there you go.

believe it or not, this is a keyboard for your keyboard. if you don't like a smooth keyboard, you can turn it into more of a blackberry. it's a crazy idea. the other one is a strap for your ipad one and two. the padstrap.com. it's $40. the last one is my favorite. i have a strap. it's a microphone that goes into your ipad. we have used it during a broadcast where we send in voice overs over wi-fi. you can e-mail in professional audio. it's very, very useful. it's less than $100. >> cool. a reminder to become a fan of nbc bay area morning news on facebook. look for details to see rod stewart on april 20th. live nation is helping us to give out free tickets.
