that's coming up in a live report. it's thursday, april 25th. this is today in the bay. good morning to you. thank you for joining us. it's 5:00 on this thursday morning. i'm mar i'm marla tellez. >> i'm scott mcgrew, good morning, christina. >> good morning to you. all week long, nbc and the entire country is celebrating earth week. we are out here at a farm outside the city limits of san jose. it's a community farm. i'm going to let you know how to come out and celebrate earth day. let's get the forecast. we have misty conditions in san jose and light showers elsewhere across the area. the reason why is because of a low pressure system sitting just to the north. it's going to settle to the

amount of traffic. a live look shows the golden gate bridge. not a lot of traffic. there are cars though. back to you. >> people are awake. thanks, mike. soon you could save california schools by sipping a soda. bob redell is live in san jose with details on a bill to tax sodas. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. some day you may have to put out a few more coins to get a big gulp like here at seven eleven. a one cent per ounce tax on soda. the california for center of advocate si says if the bill were to raise, it would raise $1.7 billion a year for public schools if you do the math, it's

just around $230 per student. anyone cannot argue this is badly needed for the schools given the budget problem. unfortunately, there's a market for the tax. if you look at the numbers, americans on average consume 50 gallons of sugary water sodas a year. 50 gallons a year. it's 39 pounds of sugar a year. one east bay superintendent telling the bay area news group soda is the new tobacco in the sense we had cigarette tax now he's arguing there should be a soda tax. president obama tried to include that in the health care reform, but the soda lobbyists shut down that idea. one antitax group says this is just another example of nanny m

nannyism, the state trying to control it. the bill had hurdles it has to overcome. it needs a two-thirds majority and faces opposition from the republicans in sacramento. they would have to overcome that for it to become a reality. reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. >> not a done deal yet. thank you. 5:04 now. cal train will vote on a plan to keep the service up and running for at least a year. they would divert plans and call for an increase in fare and parking rates. other transit agencies would chip in money. cal train needs $3.5 million to keep three stations open, continue weekend service and save ten weekday commuter trains. there could be fewer officers patrolling san francisco neighborhoods as the city figures out how to slash budgets. they want to cut $145 million in

pay raises next year for police officers. there are reports of reducing the department funding by 20%. more than 121 officers would be laid off and some police stations could be closed. they face a deficit of $380 million next fiscal year. this morning the leader of the free world will wake up in san francisco. president obama has a full slate of fund-raisers on his schedule today including one at the st. francis hotel. it's where christie smith is standing by live. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. more and more san francisco police officers are showing up here this morning. they have their work cut out for them. president obama is expected back here this morning to be back at it. more fund raising at the hotel downtown. 100 backers expected to shell out somewhere between $5,000 and $35,000 to attend this private

breakfast. governor jerry brown is expected to attend. obama's facebook town hall was a big point of business. for 35 young people representing the boys and girls club of san francisco, they were big butterflies for the chance to get close enough to shake the president's hand or tell him what's on their mind. >> i think he could do more for our schools, you know. we need the money. we need to stop cutting budget, you know, the budget cuts. i hope we can elect him again. >> reporter: now obama announced the re-election bid two and a half weeks ago with an e-mail and message on youtube. san francisco is a bright spot to generate big money for the campaign. today's big breakfast alone is expected to generate $800,000. the entire california trip is not bad at all. it's expected to generate $7

million. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, today in the bay. >> if i could catch you, i said st. francis. it's the st. regis. is that where he's staying as well? >> reporter: we are not sure about that. there's debate among reporters of when the breakfast is going to happen. i can tell you, the breakfast is expected to happen here at the st. regis downtown. yeah. there's a lot of saint hotels. >> there are. 5:07 now. this morning investigators are trying to figure out what caused a deadly fire add a sunnyvale apartment building. it broke out in the grove apartments yesterday afternoon. the fire quickly spread from the first floor to the second. it took an hour to contain the fire. afterwards, crews found the body of a 71-year-old woman inside the building. her identity has not been

released. a computer glitch during a new year's eve fire will not be repe repeated. staff at the operations center couldn't get a back up system because nobody knew the computer password. now a computer technician is required to be on sight when the emergency center is used. before a technician was on call, but not required to be there. especially not on a holiday. a school district superintendent of ignoring her when she complained a school counselor was sexually harassing her. the berkeley high school student claims her counselor hugged, and spanked her on campus. they reported the behavior to the district. according to the lawsuit, school officials told them, the counselors behavior was not severe enough to be considered sexual harassment. an arraignment hearing for a 15-year-old boy accused of killing his friend is postponed

until next month. the teen made his second appearance yesterday but did not enter a plea. the juvenile is charged with the murder of andy zang. the teen shot him at his bay view neighborhood home thinking the gun was not loaded. another teen is charged with being an accessory to murder. it is 5:09 now on this misty thursday morning. meteorologist christina loren is out celebrating earth day. good morning. >> smelling the flowers. good morning, taking a little time. good morning to you. we are having a great time out here this morning. we are celebrating earth week. today, yeah, we're getting a little bit of mist around us. we call it ambience. we are going to talk about what we are doing out here today and how you can get involved.
