bunting. you have been to a lot of festive occasions here. what do you think it will be like on friday? >> unlike anything we have seen here. i have grown up in london all my life. i don't think anyone can really understand what it's going to be like here. >> no. also, i think it will outdo charles and diana's wedding. the interactive nature with everyone tweeting and courtiers from the palace tweeting updates it will feel like insiders are involved which people like. >> we are hearing reports that prince william during the wedding reception -- what do you know about that? >> people thought there would be a nod to princess diana or a specific mention of her. in his groom's speech there are reports saying he wants to talk about her, how she's hopefully there with him on the day, what she meant to him and how much he wishes she had got to know kate. you can see how close they are.

we're back at 7:45 with the most detailed aou diana enrique -- i'm sorry, i'm having a tough morning -- she led the paper coverage for the scandal. she is the only reporter to interview bernie madoff twice in the prich where he is serving a 150-year sentence. her book is called "the wizard of lies." good to see you. >> good morning. >> let's get to one of the headlines in the book. you say we all know about this scheme now, but you take the reader back to 1962 and say there was another close call for bernie madoff, one that should have given us a window on his personality. describe it. >> i was intrigued by what he shared with me about the scandal. it was 1962. most of us forgot there was a little blip in the stock market. we don't remember it anymore, but it nearly wiped him out. he put a lot of his investors'

money in very risky new issue stocks, the equivalent of internet bubble stocks, and lost it all. so he lost their money and then he covered it up. he borrowed money from his father-in-law to make good on those losses and kept it all very quiet. so, they thought he was a genius. >> and so what we learned from that experience -- and, by the way, there was another one some 25 years later. >> yes. >> is what he was willing to do, how far he was willing to go to protect his reputation. >> he could not admit failure, matt. he just could not admit it. if he said he was going to be a genius money manager he would never admit he had lost your money. it was almost a classic flaw. >> one of the major points of disagreement between you and a lot of other people and bernie madoff is when this huge ponzi scheme, the one that unraveled a couple of years ago, began. he is adamant that it began in 1992. >> i am convinced it started

earlier. if you look at the texture of movement in his bank accounts, the changes in the things he was telling investors, the scale of money he was handling by the mid 1980s it's not credible to me that it was not already beginning at some level at least by the mid '80s. did it go back to 1962? i don't know. i think maybe the same -- the right question to ask, matt, isn't did the ponzi scheme go back that far but was he bending the rules? was he shading the truth at least at that time? >> the scale of the fraud is monumental, but the effort it took to cover it up is even more astonishing. there was computer software programs created to generate the kind of material that bernie madoff knew the s.e.c. would be looking for. i think you have commented to our producer that he spent as much time covering up his crime as most money managers spend

making money for clients. >> it was ludicrous. it give use a great appreciation for how hard it was to pierce. as you say, he had all this special software. he had a program to allow his key lieutenant to appear to be trading with somebody in europe when he was really just trading key strokes with somebody down the hall. it was amazing. >> the question everybody wants to ask, diana, is did the family know? did his wife know? did his sons know? did his brother know? this is something -- for 16 years i kept this secret from my wife, my brother, my sons. how i was able to do it and maintain sanity, well, that worries me when i think about it. it's an interesting comment. >> he's so well defended against the reality of what he did. my conclusion is that ruth, mark and andrew did not know. i cannot find any evidence that they did. my starting point is innocent until proven guilty and i could not find any proof that they knew. >> his son mark committed suicide on the second anniversary of the fraud.

you write in the book from a friend, he had always been so proud of his name, mark, and of being the guy who was bernie madoff's son. all anyone ever saw in him was that he was bernie madoff's son. >> i think the fact that the source of his greatest pride became the source of his greatest shame was one of the most heartbreaking things mark had to deal with. think of the scene where he's confessing to his sons in the study at the penthouse where he told them, it's all over. andrew, his younger son, was grieving. he wept, even gave his father a hug, according to bernie. but mark, from that moment, was almost speechless with rage. he never spoke to his father again, unless you consider his suicide the last final message he sent. it was clearly a betrayal that cut him to the quick. >> it's an amazing story. incredibly well written and researched by someone who's

will be productive. they still don't know what happened to felicia barnes or how she spent her final days. the long and frustrating search for felicia barnes ended in the icy waters in maryland when her body was found near a dam 40 miles northeast offal baltimore nearly four months after she disappeared around christmas time. >> all of us since that day in december have been praying and hopeful for a different outcome. >> reporter: a high school honor student she was last seen visiting family in december 28th. her picture was flashed on electronic highway billboards and though it became a national story. >> tell us when the last time you spoke with your daughter. >> reporter: some say it may have drawn more attention if she had been white. as for how she died police say there were no obvious signs of trauma but said there could be a connection to another man whose body was found in the river at

about the same time hers was discovered. >> his cause of death hasn't been determined. the medical examiner said it is a black male, 6'4", 240 pounds. >> reporter: the mother of phylicia barnes thanked those who helped and her father wrote, my body is numb. then, it's not over. barnes would have turned 17. maryland police are not aware if she survived to see her birthday. as many as 40 tornadoes over the weekend. the st. louis airport is operating but not at full capacity. and a florida woman got the scare of her life over the weekend when she came home to find a seven-foot alligator in the house. alexis dunbar said it snuck through the doggy door.

b.e.t. why are you revealing all this now? >> i'm comfortable in my skin. i'm ready to show the success cards. no one successful in human endeavor if they are honest won't tell you they have learned more from failure than success. i think we learn more from failure than success. >> it's an effort to tell other people. >> i think people can relate. i talk about my own personal failings. i love what samuel beckett wrote. he wrote simply, ever tried? ever failed? no matter. try again, fail again, fail better. i love that. try again, fail again, fail better. failure doesn't have to be final. it doesn't have to be fatal. we live in a world where everybody is frozen by failure. individually in our families, our country, we are afraid of the future. we can fail if we learn the lesson. >> you chronicle in the book the criticism you faced when you used your broadcast forums to hold presidents candidates and

president barack obama accountable. we should explain as a social commentator you are known for holding politicians accountable. so what exactly happened here? you were actually, you know, really reviled for this. >> the short answer is that black folk who waited years for this moment and i understand it. i was on the anchor desk with tom brokaw and brian williams. one of the highlights of my 20-year career. but black folk waited 400 years for the moment. they wanted him to win. if i can take malcolm x's phrase, by any means necessary. to talk about holding him accountable though i had done it for every presidency, there was something about this black guy who they wanted elected. they didn't want to hear accountability or critique about him. i didn't change. black america did. that's part of what it is to learn. you have to stand in your own truth with courage, conviction

and commitment and know over time it will catch up with you. >> you were called a traitor, a sell-out. >> i was called everything. and president obama is the best example of failing up in this country. he ought to be the poster child. when he ran for the house seat bobby rush beat him three to one. he ran for the senate. his opponents started falling off like flies. in 2000 he can't get into the senate building for the democratic convention in l.a. and in 2008 he's president of the united states. if that ain't failing up, i don't know what is. >> what do you think his greatest failure has been so far? >> he's got a full plate. but i think he's got to be held accountable to different standards. i think he's wrong on the wars. he's giving too much attention to the rich and the lucky, not enough to the poor. not enough focus on jobs. again, he has a lot on his plate but are you going to side with

the weak or the strong? we have to focus more attention on the weak and not on the strong. >> you think the budget is an opportunity for the president? >> i think budgets are moral documents. you can say what you say, but you are what you are. you put your budget on the table, we know what you believe in. there are real questions to be asked. the republican budget is no better but budgets are moral documents. this budget says a lot about our values and priorities. i don't like any of it. >> one priority needs to be about finding people jobs. >> absolutely. that's the message. >> what do you think needs to be done? what's your message to president obama? >> the way to cut deficits is to provide jobs. if you want to reduce the deficits get americans back to work. that's true for republicans and democrats. jobs, jobs, jobs. this country has to fail up as well. >> all right. a man who never lacks for an opinion. thank you so much. the book is called fail up. coming up next, we'll head back to buckingham palace where meredith vieira is whipping up the surprising food of royalty.

four days away we are bringing jelly back with sam bompus. he wrote a book. don't call it jello, right? it's jelly. >> it's very much jelly and it's wonderful stuff. >> what is a jelly monger? you're a young guy. why do you have a passion for this? >> almost by accident. we wanted thought on the street what london really needs is jelly. they turned us down almost immediately. they weren't interested at all. for the past four years we have gone on a crazy jelly adventure. >> it used to be automatic in the royal family. henry viii was a big fan of jelly. >> he had it for the first and second course in his banquet. >> in the old days the molds were made of wood or copper. you have modernized that to

plastic? >> we design jelly molds on the computer. my partner doesn't design buildings. he uses his skills to design jellies. so it's 3-d on the computer. >> okay. >> then we backform it or going back in time to victorian techniques to make the molds. >> you copy what was way back when. >> it's effectively -- and we get it done on the queen's own electric formers. they use the same technique as would have been done for this mold which is 150 years old. again, they don't know what to make of it. >> let's look at your creations. in honor of william and kate you made a mold of buckingham palace. that's the result. >> there you go. >> why didn't you do westminster abbey? >> we looked at it.

typical apartment. they were very large. apparently he loved kensington palace and once he gets married there are report that is he wants to make it his home when he and kate are in london. you may not know it but he hasn't rehearsed for the wedding yet. everybody else has but he's been out as a search and rescue pilot doing his duty in the air force. he's on leave for a few weeks so he's due in the church this week. i'm sure kate is saying, you better get over there and know what you're doing. he'll be doing that this week. they said easter at her home. when they get married the middletons will still be a part of gatherings. that was an important thing for him to do. natalie morales is in kate middleton's hometown. she'll be reporting from there. ann? >> actually, let's go to natalie now. she's in bucklebury, as i understand. hey, natalie. >> reporter: hey, yes!

"rio" edged out tyler perry's "madea's big happy family." and "water for elephants" was third.

everyone wants to see was hidden away. prince william and kate middleton reportedly enjoying private time at the home of kate's parents in bucklebury before they take their vows with the world watching. police kept us at a distance on sunday from the home. local reports said they enjoyed a four-hour easter lunch. over the weekend there was plenty of chatter over who made the guest list and who didn't. notably absent from the 1,900 invitees former prime ministers tony blair and gordon brown. according to the palace, not a royal snub, they just aren't knights of the guarder. in kate's hometown the buzz is all about who among them is going. >> there are parties everywhere, you know, street parties and stuff like that. a lot of the people from around here are actually going to the wedding. >> reporter: the butcher, pub owner and shop keeper are just a few of the middletons' neighbors

who will be in the pews at westminster. kate was christened at st. andrews church and much of the talk is how she's ready to be the princess bride. >> it doesn't really get noticed and now kate middleton is from this small village and that's good. >> reporter: daniel nichols is especially proud. he taught kate and all the middleton kids piano. >> i don't think anybody thought she'd be a brilliant pianist but a fantastic princess, i'm sure, and one day a fantastic queen as well. >> reporter: he even composed a song in her honor which he just released on itunes. everyone here seems to be celebratin celebrating. even the local brewery has royal wedding ale just for the occasion. and there will be parties everywhere from the streets to the pubs to a sold out celebration for the village of 2,000 at bucklebury farm park. >> we have the main theme here. >> reporter: claire shepherd has been baking cakes for the occasion for two months. >> making a huge deal of it and having a brilliant party.

there is a lot going on. >> reporter: all seemingly enjoying the storybook moment. well, as i mentioned, a lot of excitement here about who is invited from bucklebury. this local shop keeper has been invited along with his wife. this is his daughter mya. you are holding the coveted invitati invitation. >> indeed. >> when you got it in the mail, what did you think? >> my wife came in. she screamed when she saw the . i came to see what was going on and she told me it had come from buckingham palace. >> right. >> and we opened it together. we saw the official invitation. for a few seconds it was a complete shock. >> reporter: i know you had a conversation with kate middleton shortly after the engagement

good morning. >> reporter: ann, good morning. lindsay lohan wasn't in jail long. she quickly posted bail. she's free this morning. the question is -- for how long? lindsay lohan's catwalk through the courthouse front door has become somewhat routine but you can say the same about her exit out the back door in handcuffs. friday, the actress was sentenced to jail for the fourth time. this stint for violating her probation. >> people with a problem whether it's a celebrity, law enforcement, a politician, they are always kept away from the general population. >> reporter: lohan's sentence, 120 days in jail plus almost 500 hours of community service. but lindsay wasn't in custody long, only a few hours, released on bail while her attorney appeals the ruling. >> the process has begun already to get her out. >> reporter: the probation violation is connected to a shoplifting case. lohan is accused of stealing

this necklace, the same one she was photographed wearing after it went missing. she pled not guilty but the hint of a crime was enough for the judge to revoke her probation. >> i think it is a message saying, i think you committed this crime. >> reporter: lohan is seen at a jewelry store trying on items and walked out wearing the $2500 necklace. she called it an honest mistake. >> lindsay's attorney tried to persuade the judge that it was a misunderstanding. the judge was not persuaded, was skeptical. >> reporter: in court friday, the jewelry store owner and lapd detectives took the stand. testimony that convinced the judge there was enough evidence for a trial. while the case is moving forward the judge reduced the felony charge to a misdemeanor, a break for lindsay and frustration for the district attorney. >> she is not taking this seriously. i tried to impart that to four

new allegations this morning of using excessive force and racial profiling. two federal lawsuits have been filed against the department, both with latino plaintiffs. one alleges in 2009 an officer parked his patrol car on the knee of a man suspected of fighting and the other alleges in 2008 an officer slammed a man to the ground. the officers arrested his sister when she complained he was not resisting arrest. the suits come as the police department is trying to foster a better relationship with the latino community.

remains a secluded refuge. details of life beyond the walls may emerge in history books one day. >> i spent the morning looking at queen victoria's sketch books. >> reporter: deirdre murphy, a curator of the palace, gave us a rare look beyond the palace walls. when you look at the buildings, what goes through your mind? >> well, the special thing about kensington palace is that it doesn't have the grand facades that you expect of a palace. it's more domestic. that makes it a special place and a kind of little known gem in london. >> reporter: more like a home. >> a lot more homely. >> reporter: kensington palace was the birthplace and home of queen victoria. princess margaret lived there until her death in 2002. incess diana.n as the home of she and prince charles moved in as newlyweds. >> princes william and harry grew up in apartments 8 and 9. it sounds like a small apartment

but these were really a vast, wonderful place to raise children. there was a helicopter pad and also the wonderful gardens. they could just run out in the park and be by -- be like normal kids. >> reporter: princess diana lived in the palace until her death in 1997. the princes say they will always consider it home. just next door to the family lived princess margaret and lord snowden in the famous apartment 1-a. what was her life like? >> she used this room for entertaining. this would have been the site of lots of fun. she loved playing the piano. she was a good singer. >> reporter: she was good? >> she was a good piano player and apparently a good singer. i think the piano was roughly about here. she had a desk in the corner where she would work. so this room was lord snowden's study. he's a famous photographer. >> reporter: if i had been a fly on the wall during the heyday of princess margaret and lord

snowden, what would i have experienced here? >> the princess spent time with the beatles, famous playwrights, peter sellers. all kinds of well known, famous, glamorous folks. >> reporter: she attracted the best. >> she did. >> reporter: just down the hall are queen victoria's apartments. so this is the cupola. >> this is the cupola. this is the room in which baby princess victoria was christened. >> when did her father die? >> reporter: before she turned 1 year old. she and her mother lived together at the palace until she came to the throne in 1837. >> reporter: one of the most delicate and rarely seen possessions is queen victoria's wedding dress. it's said to be the dress that changed all wedding dresses. >> queen victoria married prince albert on the 10th of february 1840. and that is the bodice of the dress.

it's a matching bodice and skirt made from ivory silk. >> reporter: what is the history of the dress? >> victoria wanted, more than being a queen on the day of her wedding she wanted to be a bride because she was deeply in love with prince albert. she decided rather than to wear extravagant robes of state in crimson velvet and gold she wore a simple ivory wedding dress. after queen victoria wore the dress in 1840, more brides started to wear ivory and it is the color most wear today. >> it has nothing to do with virginity? >> no. >> reporter: victoria's wedding dress is over 100 years old. it is a treasured piece of history, safely secured behind palace walls. its story, one of many at kensington, provides a glimpse into royal life through the ages. kensington palace has a nickname within the royal family. prince charles reportedly calls it the cousin heap because so many of his relatives lived
