good morning, welcome to a special edition of "today at the royal wedding." it is all about the dress. we're talking about ann curry's dress here on a friday morning. wow. >> oh, come on. really. what you're not getting are the wellies because i thought it would rain so i wore these today, but it didn't. >> it didn't which is great news. you had such a vanle taj point from the abbey. >> phenomenal. >> when she got out of the rolls royce in that beautiful dress? >> the crowd were all nodding and gushing in a sense. they loved it. >> how far were you from where the car stopped? >> i would say probably 30 feet. i still it shall. >> you have a habit of spilling coffee on people. >> exactly. it was amazing to be that close

and to see the carriage, the queen come up. you're right. i heard you saying when we were watching that it was hard not to be really excited. >> anyway, ann curry along with meredith vieira. i'm matt lauer. al roker will join us shortly. if you weren't able to wake up early or stay up late to watch the ceremony we'll have highlights ahead. >> plus, we have the moment that made a lot of hearts go pitter-patter. the first public kiss as a royal couple on the balcony of buckingham palace. ale royal tradition. the first one wasn't that good. the crowd said, we want another one. so they did it with a little more feeling, as we said. >> might be the first time there were two kisses. we have to research that. since we love weddings so much we'll ask when will it be prince harry's turn to tie the knot? no pressure, but in the crowd i saw a beautiful young woman wearing a tiara with a huge sign outside of westminster abbey

that said, marry me, marry! >> his girlfriend was here chelsy davy. definitely there today. >> how long before we have a countdown clock on the screen -- >> for the baby? >> for harry's. >> within half an hour. >> let's bring in michelle kosinski with the look at the day's highlights. good morning. >> talk about magic moments. it was a cold, windy, english morning. as soon as catherine started walking down the aisle, the sky opened up, the sun came out. everybody was rejoicinrejoicing. they really wanted to incorporate nature into their ceremony. the abbey was full of live trees and foliage and they relaxed, too, once they matde it togethe at the front. they wanted to convey the warmth of the moment. quite the enormous scale of everything.

>> reporter: it truly is catherine's day, beginning with a wave to the waiting crowds outside her hotel. looking radiantly happy. on her way to the abbey. and here in this thousand-year-old place of worship, kate emerged to take in its grandeur, looking more serious to make the long slow walk, almost four minutes past world leaders and close friends. the journey from her ole old wod to a new one. prince harry, ready with a grin, couldn't help but steal a first look back at her. with her classic structured gown and simple veil appears in the style of a medieval queen. her first tiara for her first day as a real princess. meeting her prince at the altar, smiles and a sweet whisper. whatever these two, all eyes on them were thinking and feeling the emotion seemed right there. >> i, william arthur philip >> thee catherine elizabeth to

[ cheers ] sometimes it seems strange to use the word "simplicity" but there were elements of that in her gown and it wasn't the world's longest train or anything. definitely in the bridesmaids' dresses you saw simple elegance. and william and catherine didn't want exotic flowers. only indigenous plants, some

taken from the palace, all neutral colors. a lot of planters said we may see surprises in the wedding. i don't know if anything surprised us but we got two kisses. >> that's a surprise. thank you. >> thanks, michelle. >> mr. roker at australia gate outside buckingham palace. what's happening there, al? >> well, what's interesting now, matt, is folks are cleared out in the center of the circle there around the queen victoria memorial. but the folks who were the first in earlier today in those perimeter pens still hanging out. really just having a party. on my way to visit the facilities, you can see folks picnicking. there are beautiful gardens and lovely lagoons. people just enjoying the day. the weather turned out okay. i've got to tell you, to me, besides the ceremony, the beauty and the grandeur of it, what was impressive is when they opened up the mall, folks walked down

from trafalgar square down along the mall to here. it was so orderly. it seemed like a festival. people having a great time and all here to watch the first kiss. and the second kiss, as it turned out as well. it was a special time and the crowds, very polite, nice and everybody friendly. the crowds, to me, were almost the most impressive thing about the ceremony. >> yeah. >> all right, al, thank you very much. >> let's bring in our royal experts, andrew roberts and camilla tominey. overall, your impression of the wedding this morning? >> i think both families have done brilliantly. the royal family on one side and the middletons on the other. i think kate has been the star of the show, quite rightly. i think they have been dignified. it's been a glorious celebration

of britain outside and it's sending the message that the royal family are here to stay. >> it will be compared, for better or worse, to 1981's royal wedding between charles and diana. so, andrew, how do you think it stacks up? >> i think the chemistry between them is much, much better than it was in 1981. and i think the melange between the traditional and the modern was done beautifully. a split second decision of the guards and the cavalry and then at the same time new songs at the wedding. tremendously impressive. >> we are debating whether she was nervous or not. i thought she seemed confident. >> we said she's a naturale royal. she's behaved impeccably during other public engagements. i couldn't believe how self-contained she was, how dignified. she was clearly nervous, who

wouldn't be? but considering everyone watching, billions around the world, she wasle brilliant. >> my favorite moment -- well, two. she came out on the balcony at buckingham palace and you saw her lips say "oh, wow." you look at the sea of people that was behind us here. if you are someone who's not familiar with that though she's been in the public eye for ten years sh that's a shocking moment. >> to go out and see a quarter million people or whatever the number is all looking at you, many applauding you, some taking your photograph at that moment, something prince william has seen before, of course, but not her. apart from the "oh, wow" which was a natural thing for anyone to say, after that she was just a natural. like she was born to it. >> they are in the reception, probably eating and enjoying themselves. >> they are having a selection of nice canapes. they are having paul roget

champagne and the two pain wedding cakes. one known by paul mccartney's favorite cake maker and the biscuit cake william asked for. it's like an oreo cake. >> it's a cake he's enjoyed since he was a little boy. >> it was made by the buckingham palace chef when he was a boy. >> the wedding cake can be enormo enormous. in 1840, queen victoria's had nine tiers and was taller than her. some of it still survives. there are bits kept by people. they have even been on ebay. >> someone tried tole sell charles and diana wedding cake and they sold it for $7,000. >> for 30-year-old wedding cake? >> yum. >> beyond the specifics of the marriage, there are a lot of hopes riding on what it means

for britain. i wonder if you thought it met that. >> more than. what it's done is move us out of a cult of diana concentration and moved us into this chemistry between william and princess catherine. this is going to be the story from now on. not the terrible old times of the 90s, but looking into a new chapter for the monarchy. today could not have been better for the story. >> kevin tibbles has been checking out -- i believe he was in times square before. >> he was before. he thought it was trafalgar. >> kevin, good morning again. >> reporter: well, i dressed for trafalgar, but i'm not the only one in fancy dress here stateside in the colonial territories today. a lot of people may be showing

up for work bleary-eyed. people were getting up extra early to celebrate the royal wedding. as the guests arrived champagne was chilling, cake being cut. >> it's a happy event. >> reporter: people joined coast to coast to join in the celebration. >> i took the day off. just for the royal wedding. >> reporter: wedding attire requested at the white heart pub in woodland hills, california, where party goers stayed up all night to witness the royal "i do." in illinois, a nod to tradition with a parade of hats. but also attire more suited to the 4:00 a.m. start time. >> some people have slippers and

pajamas because it's early in the morning. >> reporter: scones, tea and must see tv. then the moment everyone was waiting for. the first look at kate's dress. and a collective sigh. [ cheers ] >> reporter: then the royal vows. >> i william arthur philip louis. >> reporter: of course some of the stateside spectators watched somewhat longingly. >> wouldn't we look good together? >> it's a good match but blonds have more fun. >> reporter: their consolation prize? a lovely 40-carat-like tiara. some 2 billion people were expected to watch worldwide and as the sun came up in the u.s., the other most anticipated moment. [ cheers and applause ] >> just a magical moment. >> reporter: one last toast to the prince and his new princess and then sadly it was off to work for many. >> i'm ready to get the hat off and get to work.

>> reporter: no royal holiday here. the lucky ones able to trundle off to bed. >> it was perfect! >> reporter: trundling off to bed is what they are all doing now, except those who have to go to the office. i'm sure you have research material there. i have been basing what i have been saying on this. it seems to be working on this side of the atlantic. back to you. can you see it? >> i can see it. you've got it, kevin. thank you very much. we could have used that six hours ago. >> a little late now. >> early in the day, claudia, we were looking at guests filing into westminster abbey. one of the first people i saw was your husband. first off, how was it? >> it was absolutely fantastic as i'm sure everyone has said. i don't know if you have talked to many guests but it was really very relaxed. we were there from 8:30 and then william and harry walked down

the aisle at 10:15. i took a chance to go to the loo, have a good look around and see who was there, chat to people. i stood next to a guy who's in william's flight. they were all there today. so there are other people that took over their duties and flew for them today so they could be here. >> it must have meant a lot to them. >> it was relaxed and slowly built up which was lovely. william and harriy and looked a bit nervous. i thought harry looked nervous. then the more serious people came and the music was incredible. the atmosphere built and built. >> and the moment you saw catherine. >> until the moment you know the only person we are waiting for. it was truly magical. genuinely awesome. it was my top moment of the day. >> we were getting emotional up here, especially matt.

for you this is a friend of yours, you worked with catherine. >> a friendly working relationship. i can't claim to be a friend of hers. she's a friendly, lovely girl. i think i'm a terrible romantic. i love weddings, but there is something incredibly moving about a father taking his daughter up the aisle and giving her away. it was where we were sitting. we saw him first. it was like that photograph. he's relaxed and cool. >> you talk about emotions. did tom cry? be honest. >> come on. >> did i cry? >> he does cry. >> i always cry at weddings. most of it dodging my beautiful wife's hat. >> what was the moment you thought was the most touching for you? >> at the end of the day, they were marrying each other not the rest of the world. i think they were excited by the world being interested but they

are the ones who've got to make it work. i don't know. i always get emotional at weddings because they are all about whatever else goes before a wedding, at the end of the day it's about a couple looking for happiness. in fact you might say that's more a driving force than it would be for anyone else. you saw how miserable it was for him when his mother died. when you looked you thought, oh, i hope it works for you. >> we have about 15 seconds. since you know jewelry, the earrings and tiara? >> amazing. i was worried about what she'd wear. she's a discreet, understated person and the tiara was the first thing i saw, gently sparkling in her veil. it was completely right for her. it was lent by the queen. >> and the earrings, a gift from her parents to her. >> i didn't know that. >> a lovely touch.

>> come here, honey. we have a lot of information. claudia, thank you very much. >> let's go back to new york for tamron hall for a check of the top stories. good morning. >> good morning. we begin with deadly weather in the south that's claimed nearly 300 lives. lester holt is live in tuscaloosa, alabama. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you look around here and you think in an era of modern forecasting technology how can so many people die? 210 in alabama, 34 in tennessee, 33 in mississippi among six states where there were fatalities. as one forecaster put it when you're taubing about a tornado as big as one that tore through here, even with a 24-minute warning that's maybe enough time to hunker down but not to leave the area.

here in tuscaloosa this is what residents saw wednesday night as a massive tornado tore through the area, pulverizing everything in its path. >> it's one of those things you see on tv. you don't ever expect it to happen to you. >> reporter: in all, at least 170 twisters ripped through six states. >> we have thousands of citizens who have lost their possessions. >> reporter: president obama declared a state of emergency mobilizing 1,400 national guardsmen to help with the recovery and cleanup. >> i want every american who has been affect by the disaster to know the federal government will do everything we can to help you recover. >> reporter: the killer storms caused massive evacuations in tennessee and kentucky and left parts of mississippi looking like a war zone. georgia wasn't spared. rock spring resident cheryl brewer and her husband were in their car when the storm hit. >> it flipped us around a few times and rolled us. >> reporter: although thousands have lost everything, some -- like terry bennett from georgia -- are counting their blessings,

realizing they are among the lucky ones. >> you rebuild. you take it in stride and pray that everybody is safe. >> reporter: the grim search for victims is not over. officials in tuscaloosa plan to begin usinging cadaver dogs today. there are hundreds of thousands across the region who are without power this morning, tamron. >> all right, lester, thank you. nasa technicians are preparing "endeavour" for its scheduled final launch at the kennedy space center. gabrielle giffords is attending the event today in support of her husband mark kelly, the commander of "endeavour's" final mission. the president and first lady are attending. elsewhere in the middle east, syrian government forces opened fire on demonstrators rallying in a coastal city. in libya, government troops clashed with opposition forces chasing them into neighboring tunisia which condemned libya for violating its territory. and a sar cough gus that

good morning. welcome back to london and our special coverage of "today at the royal wedding." stations on the east coast, we are interrupting kathie lee and hoda. sorry, ladies. the newlyweds are about to leave the palace. i'm matt lauer alongside meredith vieira, ann curry, natalie morales and camilla tominey as well. following a great wedding ceremony, an elaborate procession through the streets of london and the kiss -- two actually -- on the balcony at buckingham palace. william and kate will get some private time but first a little face time. >> they are about to emerge.

we'll head to clarence house where william started this morning for what's known as a period of reflection. they will be back at the palace later for a reception hosted by prince charles. they are just finishing up lunch now. >> isn't there another reception after that for a smaller group of 300? >> it's almost like two weddings, ann. there is a wedding for the vips, this big occasion hosted by the queen. they will take time out, have a rest and prince charles is hosting an intimate dinner and dance for 300 which is the wedding they wanted. the if they hadn't been royal that would have been the wedding. that will be more intimate with prince william's speech, the first dance. >> and pippa did the party. >> she's a party planner. actually, later it will be the middleton show. they are coming out now.

>> we are seeing it now. >> we are told this will be at a processional pace. it will take one to two minutes before they make it to clarence house. i'm not sure if she changed out of the wedding gown. it appears she has. >> they are going in different directions. these could be preliminary vehicles. >> but there is a crowd past the trees. you can see a crowd of people perhaps getting ready to say good-bye. >> the first cars are security. they usually drive range rovers. not that they don't know where they are going but a second before the main cars come out. >> it's just a short trip from here to clarence house. >> it's been an incredible day here. i was wondering why people in the circle stuck around. >> now we know. >> not for us. >> one more glimpse.

>> they obviously are looking for one last glimpse of the couple. >> this has been the people's wedding. they got two kisses by sticking around here. >> and chanting. they demanded it. >> last night prince william and prince harry greeted the crowd. they may have been hoping for that. >> how long will the day's festivities go? >> no one knows. it starts at 7:00 p.m. our time. it could go to midnight. there's talk of prince harry hosting a survivor's breakfast at 6:00 a.m. so the last people standing. >> it's a young group for sure. >> and the reception tonight in terms of the guest, is it more a family affair or are we expecting there will be some foreign royals and dignitaries as well? >> very much nearest and dearest. obviously there will be key,

senior members of the royal family. but the middleton side of the family and closest friends. the so-called circle of trust. all the rest of them we associate closely with william and kate and their friends will be there. they have the best ticket tonight. >> the queen is leaving buckingham palace tonight and will be in windsor castle so the young people can party. >> she's escaping the noise to see if she and prince philip can get some sleep. >> i want to see the mirrored ball in the throne room. >> it's a huge complex, but i would imagine you hear a party anywhere. probably not great insulation in the building as we continue to wait for prince william and pripri princess catherine. >> getting used to saying that. >> duke and duchess of cambridge. >> camilla said he hopes we call them prince and princess which is more youthful. >> sounds like she's 50 years

oldle calling her the duchess of cambridge. i think princess kate or princess catherine is more youthful. she said she doesn't mind either way. we said princess kate fits better in the headlines. >> is it an official title of princess? >> she his automatically a princess. of course camilla is the princess of wales but no one calls her that. >> the royal family prefers that she be called catherine. >> they will refer to her formally as catherine. but behind palace doors, william calls her kate. >> we hear from the london police department that they put an official estimate on the size of the crowd. apparently about a million people in various locations around london this morning watching the wedding, standing along the parade route and here for the kiss on the balcony. they are saying about 500,000

people. >> brilliant. >> thank goodness he kissed her twice. >> still a lot of people outside. peter alexander is among them. >> reporter: hey, guys. we're standing among the people and they tried to clear this area. >> do you hear us? >> we can't hear him. >> reporter: do you hear me? i hear you well. >> can you hear, peter? >> reporter: i hear you now. i will try to give you a sense for where we are. we are standing among the circle outside the palace. what's impressive more than anything else is their success in cleaning up the area in the last hour or so since we saw the kiss take place here. even when they measure the trash in london they say it was roughly the equivalent of 50 rolls royces, 140 tons. but a short time from now we expect the moment everyone's been waiting for -- an up close and personal visit with the new

prince and princess, kate middleton. everyone said that was the real stunner of the day. that's what the line-up and the wait is. it will be a slow procession, we are told, by clarence house that will likely take one to two minutes. people anticipate there may be a chance to shake hands with prince william and the duchess of cambridge. it seems unlikely. she's indicated the chance to thank some of the people here. whether it happens with a wave or a handshake, we have to see. >> we now understand this is probably a minute or so away, peter. thank you very much. you have been reporting all morning from huge crowds and we appreciate that. a minute or two before they emerge from the palace. we'll see what happens. >> it would be wonderful if they did get out. >> also when we hear helicopters, what we have found near westminster abbey is when helicopters picked up, something was about to happen. >> the mayor of london gave the

having a bird's eye view, we have done ourselves proud. >> while the hymns were being sung in the church you were singing along. >> andrew the historian and i sang along to "jerusalem." we both had it at our weddings. it's a great day for britain. >> we have much more ahead. right now let's go to new york. tamron hall is standing by at the news desk with the headlines of the morning. >> hi, everyone. rescuers are searching for victims of wednesday's tornado onslaught in the south that claimed close to 300 lives. lester holt is live in tuscaloosa, alabama. good morning again. >> reporter: tamron, good morning. what you see behind me is typical. every house here and across the region tells a story. a young couple here married only four days. the wife home alone with the dog in the closet, rode out the tornado and survived. president obama touched down here a short while ago.

he will be touring damaged areas like this. he had already signed a declaration of emergency to allow federal funds to pour into the area. alabama certainly suffered the worst of the tornadoes. 210 people dead here. tennessee, 34. there were 33 in mississippi. in all, six states suffered fatalities from tornadoes. it is believed, and we should get further word later today, but it is believed one tornado came from the mississippi/alabama border through tuscaloosa, birmingham. if that's the case it would be the longest tornado on record in terms of the time on the ground. many people are looking at the massive death toll which we haven't seen for decades from tornadoes wondering why it was so high in this era of high technology forecasting devices, but experts say the tornadoes were huge. some spinning at speeds of 200 miles an hour creating this kind of devastation. they were also on the ground for a very long time. of course they took aim on heavily populated areas like

dramatic gowns. she's known for a strong silhouette. but she's also known for using a lot of historical references and placing them in a modern context. i think in a way sarah's design was very much more kate's idea of what her perfect dress would be rather than what sarah would have done. >> it's a modern grace kelly, right? >> very reminiscent of grace kelly's dress. the fitted bodice with a lace overlay in the sleeves. >> the v-neck as well. >> exactly. grace had it up the neck and covered. but catherinele always favors a v-neck. >> how long was the train? of course so much of the focus of princess diana's wedding was the 25-foot-long train and the

dress was rumpled because she was in the glass carriage. >> yes. >> it was ten-foot. it didn't look longer and it was appropriate. the dress needed to fill the environment of westminster abbey. it's a smaller environment than st. paul's cathedral. it isn't the '80s. we didn't want her in a meringue. >> the princess pouf. >> it was under statedly elegant. >> i loved when she walked in and the wind came up and you could see the dress ripple in the wind. there may be naysayers. what do you think? have you heard from any? >> well, i think in terms of a fashion critique and from the fashion industry we would have liked her to make a more bold choice perhaps in terms of the design. choosing sarah burton was an inspired choice. it's great that she's been an

ambassador for british fashion designers. to me, i felt she could have done something a little bit more modern in the silhouette. i was expecting something a bit more fitted and to train out but the '50s, classic silhouette i felt was a safe choice. >> let's talk about others as well. the bridal party was beautiful. pippa was stunning in that dress. i think every bridesmaid in america wants to know where to get it. >> i thought she was gorgeous. but she didn't upstage the bride because kate looked amazing. but pippa cut an extraordinary figure. >> simple silhouette, classic. >> and they both have amazing figures. they wear fashion well. they both have great hair, great smiles. >> what i loved was what the queen wore. >> the queen in canary yellow. >> she wears bright colors to be

congregation. we knew there was approval across england and the reception was extraordinary in buckingham palace just behind and obviously the royal family were there. the car you probably saw racing behind you -- >> the aston-martin. >> with the just married sign. >> does it surprise you? we had no idea what to expect when they exited buckingham palace. >> prince charles gave a heartfelt speech, as did prince william. we were all ushered into the garden. it's huge, an enormous garden, very beautiful. and there they got in the car. the best men had decorated it. they were so happy and to see catherine's sister help her get into the car, it was very family-oriented today. the whole middleton family were there. everyone was chatting. there were no formalities.

i have been lucky enough to go to a number of formal functions at buckingham palace. ile felt there was much less formality today. >> certainly driving himself in the car and take off that way. >> exactly what kate wanted, the idea of an informal affair. is there anything you might feel comfortable telling us about what prince charles said? >> i was invited as a private guest, so it is a little bit awkward. >> that's fine. >> i thought it was really heart it is felt. he talked about his pride of his son. he talked about the pride of having a daughter. he called her a daughter. for a man that has the two sons and we know the history, i thought it was poignant. i really think -- you know, there's been a lot of chatter amongst the wedding guests. i think this is a turning point in the monarchy. they have had their ups and downs. >> it's the future. >> i would like to think in a

hundred years we'll be sitting -- well, not us, but other people sitting here at another big royal wedding saying, do you remember when because it was a turning point. i think they needed the boost and william and catherine brought it. the whole royal family will change. >> prince william and prince harry didn't speak at the reception? >> prince william did actually. >> this is the big speech we're expecting or another tonight as well? >> i think tonight is when you will hear the really heartfelt speeches. william gave a lovely speech. an enormous wedding cake. more like a wedding castle. >> how big was it? >> again, as i keep saying, i felt the whole day was low key given the pomp and ceremony around us. for me arriving here as i came on set i saw some photographs of

the crowds surging down the mall and of course we didn't see that. you're cocooned there. but i feel lucky i have come out and i get to see and hear it. >> we were saying as you were talking about it being a casual understated, but yet still royal affair the wedding and ceremony at westminster abbey. we were talking. it seemed like prince william was joking quite a bit, talking casually to the clergy. >> i'm sure you could see william and harry. you could see harry was looking behind and that william wasn't looking behind on purpose. >> was he waiting? >> you could tell. >> until she got right there. >> i have been with the brothers and they like to josh each other. for me it makes me happy because it could have been so easy for them to get caught up in the pomp and circumstance of the ceremony. there was formality, but it was

♪ welcome back to london where princess catherine looks absolutely ravishinging this morning in her wedding gown designed by sarah burton. she was not alone. all the guests from chelsy davie to victoria beckham and david beckham looked smashing as well. gabrielle hackworthy is here to analyze the good, the bad and the gorgeous along with trevor morgan who's been creating hats for the queen for nearly a morgan. she created this hat that is falling off my head and i apologize. it's the fascinator not put on

exactly correctly. we saw a lot of hats. who wore them the best? >> goodness me. there was a wide cross section of hats. we saw amazing headpieces. >> i'm taking it off. >> i'm afraid it won't stay. >> in particular i thought carole middleton looked beautiful. >> she did. it was a sleek, clean line. i thought she did well. >> a lot of the fascinators that catherine brought into vogue. >> i think she has. i was pleased to see the hats. it's nice to see hats as well in the abbey. >> i think one of the two women who chose not to wear a hat. >> she doesn't like to. >> she made it clear she didn't want to wear a hat to the wedding. >> she was wearing a burberry dress which was beautiful but it could have been dressed up with something in her hair rather than just the barrette.

>> we talked about the tredressd that it was rather understated. was it a disappointment? >> it was not typically a sarah burton design. i felt it was very kate middleton which it should be. it's her wedding dress, her day. it needs to have her imprint on the dress. from a fashion point of view i would have liked to see more drama, a more modern silhouette perhaps. the silhouette was very 1950s inspired but maybe that's saying something about the type of bride she wants to be -- traditional. >> i want to talk about prince william's cousins, beatrice and eugenie in the outfit and hats as well. >> they were definitely statement pieces. i guess it shows the eccentricity of the english to make a statement for this occasion. >> victoria beckham as well.

i'm wearing a dress she designed. she's very pregnant but looked smashing. >> amazing. very chic. it's hard when you are pregnant to work with a silhouette that's chic and elegant. she carried it off beautifully. >> and david had a top hat. >> david could look good in a paper bag. >> it doesn't matter what he wears, he'll look great. a top hat is a fabulous way for him to make an appearance at the wedding. >> and we had elton john and his partner david furnish as late-comers to the abbey. they gladly took their front row seats. were they in traditional wedding attire? >> morning dress. >> yes. with a little twist perhaps. fairly traditional. >> what is your take on the red uniform prince william wore?

>> he looked exceptionally sharp and handsome. as a contrast to her dress they make a beautiful and fantastic-looking couple. i think in photographs for years to come it will be a real standout and a very, very beautiful, elegant look. >> meanwhile, prince harry's off and on girlfriend chelsy must be on at this point. she wore a lovely bias reverse satin dress. shows off her eyes well. >> yes. from alberto feretti. i believe she'll reveal a simple shift underneath and change into a more evening gown for the evening. >> thank you both so much. a lot of beautiful, beautiful dresses. and a lot of great hats. i'm sorry mine fell off. still ahead, a truly global event. how americans watched the royal wedding this morning. first, this is "today" on nbc.

the band was playing, the cake decked out. it was the next best thing to being there. >> it's just a happy event. why not be silly and celebrate it? >> reporter: americans gathered from coast to coast to join in the royal celebration. >> i took the day off. just for the royal wedding. >> reporter: wedding attire requested at the white heart pub in woodland hills, california, where party goers stayed up all night to witness the royal "i do." in illinois, a nod to tradition with a parade of hats. but also attire more suited to the 4:00 a.m. start time. >> some people have been in pajamas because it's early in the morning. >> reporter: scones, tea and must see tv. then the moment everyone was waiting for. the first look at kate's dress. and a collective sigh. official program thanking the guests. the bride and groom, their families and some 650 guests are enjoying the first of two receptions inside buckingham palace. this one hosted by the queen. after that they will have a break in what's termed a period of reflection at clarence house followed by another reception hosted by william's father, prince charles. >> let us bring in michelle kosinski who has been joining us throughout the morning. was at the goring hotel and now joins us here. good morning. >> hi. it was absolutely beautiful. from the first moment the crowds got a glimpse of kate there was so much talk about not being able to see her coming out of the hotel but she was in an open car so everyone got a great look. what a magical moment. as soon as she started walking down the aisle, the sky opened up and we got a little peek of sunshine. it was great because william and catherine wanted to incorporate nature into their wedding.

the abbey was full of live foliage and balloons. they wanted to convey the warmth of the moment, despite the scale of everything: >> reporter: it truly is catherine's day, beginning with a wave to the waiting crowds outside her hotel. looking radiantly happy. on her way to the abbey. and here in this thousand-year-old place of worship, kate emerged to take in its grandeur, looking more serious to make the long slow walk, almost four minutes past world leaders and close friends. the journey from her old worldle to a new one. prince harry, ready with a grin, couldn't help but steal a first look back at her. with her classic structured gown and simple veil appears in the style of a medieval queen. her first tiara for her first

young people who have known each other for a long time, eight years. i think everybody is genuinely intoxicated with happiness because they think this thing is going to work. >> we hope so. >> this is so huge for us because this is the institution, whether you like it or not, that incarnates the continuity of the system of the society. they got married on the very spot where william the conquerer was crowned king almost 1,000 years ago. >> amazing. was there a favorite moment for you? >> you saw the bride walk down the aisle -- >> she was a knockout, stunning. >> were you as blown as way as everybody? >> the greatest moment actually was when they had done the vows and the archbishop wrapped the thing around -- no man put asunder.

we were talking a little while ago. can you imagine the number of tweets and e-mails and text messages that must have gone out throughout the course of the wedding. brings it to a new level. >> we have been here receiving information directly from the palace. it wouldn't have happened like that in 1981. we have photographers who will be wiring back pictures as soon as they can. it's a modern wedding. kate and william wanted it to have a social media content. it's being stream eed live on youtube. t twitter, facebook. it's all involved. >> they also go with something called the internet snipers out there and instantly want to knock anything they see. that's the other side of the coin here. >> although i don't think they have a leg to stand on today after what we have seen here. >> if you were writing the headlines tomorrow, what would you say? >> i suppose i would say a demure affair or something like that.

there was nothing shocking there and in a funny way we were expecting something to be outlandish whether it was the dress. it was very nice. you felt the genuineness of their feelings for each other. you could see them both breathe a sigh of relief when it was over and they came out of the abbey. after all that repressed emotion which was nice. lots of people have said the dress wasn't as dramatic as they thought it would be. >> have you had a chance to look at socialle media. is that what people -- >> people were expecting, i think because princess diana's dress was so excessive and the train so long. this one has been dignified, slightly pared down. >> deliberately so. they didn't want a bling wedding. they wanted a small wedding, but obviously you can't do that. >> if it was over the top they would have been criticized. >> especially in a recession. we are having difficult austerity measures and people are losing jobs. anything over the top would have

been criticized. >> stick around. much more ahead. now back to new york where we have tamron hall at the news desk with a lot of other headlines this morning. tamron, good morning. >> good morning. we begin with a deadly weather in the south that's claimed close to 300 lives. lester holt is live for us in hard hit tuscaloosa, alabama. good morning. >> reporter: tamron, good morning. you walk up on a scene like this and it takes your breath away. they will bring out cadaver dogs later today to look for more victims. the loss of life is beyond anything we have seen in recent decades from tornadoes. that's because officials say the size of the tornadoes was massive. over a halfle mile wide at points. they stayed on the ground for a long time and targeted heavily populated areas: here in tuscaloosa this is what residents saw wednesday night as a massive tornado tore through the area, pulverizing everything in its path. >> it's one of those things you

see on tv. you don't ever expect it to happen to you. >> went outside, opened the door, just started crying. >> reporter: in all, at least 170 twisters ripped through six states. alabama was the hardest hit in what was one of the deadliest rounds of tornadoes this country has ever seen. two-thirds of those who peris d ed from the birmingham and tuscaloosa areas. search and rescue crews search for victims as hundreds of thousands remain without power. >> we have utter destruction. we have neighborhoods that have basically been removed from the map. we've got thousands upon thousands of citizens who have lost all of their possessions. >> president obama will visit the region today has declared a state of emergency. mobilizing 1400 national guardsmen to help with the recovery and cleanup. >> we can't control when or where a terrible storm may strike. but we can control how we respond to it.

i want every american who has been affected by the disaster to know the federal government will do everything we can to help you recover. >> reporter: the killer storms caused massive evacuations in tennessee and kentucky and left parts of mississippi looking like a war zone. georgia wasn't spared. rock spring resident cheryl brewer and her husband were in their car when the storm hit. >> my husband put his arm through the steering wheel. i grabbed hold of him and the steering wheel. it flipped us around a few times, rolled us. >> reporter: although thousands have lost everything, some -- like terry bennett from georgia -- are counting their blessings, realizing they are among the lucky ones. >> you rebuild. you take it in stride and pray that everybody is safe. >> reporter: storm experts will be out today trying to determine the exact number of tornadoes in the path but they expect the one that blew here started at the

mississippi/alabama border working through birmingham and tuscaloosa. if that's the case and it stayed on the groundle all that time it would be on record as the longest ever tornado. tamron? >> thank you very much. the shuttle "endeavour" is on the launch pad at the kennedy space center in florida where it is scheduled for lift-off at 3:47 p.m. eastern time today. wounded congresswoman gabrielle giffords is attending in support of her husband, mark kelly, the commander of "endeavour's" final mission. president obama and the first lady are scheduled to attend. jaycee duggard's file, philip and nancy garido are expected to serve life sentences. duggard said she is, quote, relieved. and there is a lucky lady who doesn't need a prince for a diamond. beth gilbertson found a nearly nine-carat diamond at the crater of diamond state park where the

the mall and meet some people. that's not unlike him. >> pal. we were in the press office at clarence house and he said, i want to say hi to everyone out there. he and harry had their windows open and saw the atmosphere. we just went around the corner, out the back door. it was typical of william and really nice. there is a lovely sense of good will and excitement. >> what was he saying to you building up to today? last night, was he nervous? >> no. he's been incredibly relaxed all week. it's been remarkable. happy and confident. you saw it today. of course there would be nerves. anyone on their wedding day. it was lovely to see them enjoy it. that's most important. >> three months ago in london we sat down and had lunch. i tried every way in the book to trick you into revealing some information about this event. to be honest, what happened was

total privacy and secrecy, all the details of this remained quiet until we saw them firsthand. in the day of social media, how did you accomplish that? >> people respected prince william and catherine. people love them. when they say, look, we want to keep this until the day -- catherine in particular with the dress. everyone knew it was important to keep the bride secret. every bride wants to do that for their groom, their husband to be. it wasn't that difficult. we have a way of keeping things to ourselves. but we are keeping the information flowing but keeping back the really special stuff. >> you talk about how important it is a day for prince william and prince charles. his oldest child getting married. >> i saw him last night. he was very excited. both harry and william are very, very close to their father.

they had dinner with the duchess of cornwall and the prince of l wal wales. i know he's a proud father. >> what must have been a challenge is trying to walk the line between a day so important for a couple and a day that was so important for the nation. >> that's been the balancing act. maintaining and creating an intimate personal occasion. they said, we can look back like anyone looks back on our wedding day with the same memories of a church, music, friends and family, laughter and speeches. yet have a huge national occasion and a big global occasion and make it with all the pageantry and the pomp and ceremony. i hope we pulled it off. >> as matt said earlier, you did. quite something. >> i know we'll spend time together. where are we going on the honeymoon again? >> nice try. >> we'll tell you off air. >> sure you will. thank you so much. congratulations again. well done.

parties. from small towns to remote villages the british took to the streets. more than 5,000 official street parties were organized to celebrate the wedding of prince william and kate middleton. nowhere were the festivities more meaningful than in the hometown village of bucklebury where kate middleton grew up. >> i was watching her come down the aisle. you know, they are a very beautiful couple. william is going to be a king of the people. i'm sure she's going to be a queen of the people. >> reporter: bucklebury's population of 2,000 doubled that number today, located just 53 miles away from the abbey in london where she was married. middleton's local postman, butcher and pub owner were all invited to the wedding ceremony. villagers are proud of the local girl described as down-to-earth becoming the future queen of england. >> it's a new, modern age sprks

she has no freedom. she'll never go anywhere without 24-hour surveillance from the public who will want to see her in any mood, any condition. if she can capture her unhappy or tired that's a great photo. >> she's in a better position than princess diana was when she married because i think she knows what she's getting into. she's been with william for ten years, eight as a couple. >> it's a totally different start for her. she's also got a husband who will be very supportive of her. we have already seen that. he's already conscious of the difficulties she'll face. >> she seems to be very much embraced by the royal family. what about her parents? will they be iced out? >> i think they will be iced out, without a doubt. it's not just the royal family. it's the structure. they won't want any other voices in kate's head but their own. >> how does kate maintain her

jaycee due guard and held her captive 18 years. they both pleaded guilty yesterday. 56-year-old phillip garrido will face a maximum sentence of 431 years to life in prison. his wife nancy faces 36 years to life for rape and kidnapping. the plea means dugard and her children, fathered by phillip garrido, will not have to testify in court. the couple will be sentenced on june 2nd. the ordeal of two uc berkeley grads held captive in iran will be told today. sarah shourd, her mother and supporter will hold "dimensions of detainment." it's meant to bring attention to the plight of shane bower and josh fattal. they've been held in an iranian prison for more than 600 days. the performance will be at noon at the united nations plaza in san francisco. right now, want to get a check of the forecast. >> good morning to you.
