morning, it's monday, may 2nd. this is today in the east bay. good morning, everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. it is 4:30. osama bin laden has been killed in pakistan. we are going to talk to brian moore, who has the very latest from washington. >> reporter: this is where osama bin laden met his end. not in a cave, but a suburban mansion in pakistan. the world east most wanted terrorist and the master mind of 9/11 taken down by u.s. forces at the order of president obama. >> the united states killed osama bin laden, the leader of al qaeda. a terrorist who is responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children. justice has been done. >> usa!

usa! >> reporter: celebrations erupted outside the white house. it was important to bring a wicked murderous person to justice. >> reporter: at ground zero in new york, towns large and small across the country what can be described as patriotic rallies. for those who lost loved ones, it's a day of closure. >> for nearly a decade, bin laden taunted the united states. u.s. intelligence received a break last august. >> it was far from certain and took many months to run it to ground. >> reporter: the president gave the go ahead. >> they carried it out the extraordinary courage. after the fire fight, they killed osama bin laden and took custody of his body. >> reporter: the end to an extraordinary manhunt.

5,885 men and women. in la fayette, some service members families are opposed to the memorial saying it was more of a political statement, not a fitting tribute. the crass is a individual reminder of the sacrifice that happened. we will talk about the people, including a soldier from san jose who died in the war in afghanistan. he is staff sergeant marcus wells. 31 years old when he dies. he leaves behind a wife and two young sons. he told his father, dad, if anything happens to me, remember, i love doing this. reporting live in la fayette, christie smith, today in the east bay. >> i appreciate you being there. there's a moment of celebration and the realization of what it cost the united states. >> reporter: absolutely. >> thank you much. well, on this very strange day, let us turn to christina

mike? >> around 4:38, i think it is, 4:38 right now. look at the toll plaza. there's an accident reported at the toll plaza. no slowing because the volume is so light. there will be activity. i'll let you know if it affects toll lanes. back out to the maze, i show you heading up on the upper east shore freeway, we have an accident at the san pablo road. this involves a truck, a big rig that hit a pole at the off ramp where the lanes separate to get off the freeway. this is confirmed a deadly accident. the coroner is headed to the scene. right now, a minor bit of slowing as there are a couple cars there including chp officers. they have to close lanes. this could be a big issue coming down the freeway. we'll watch this carefully and i'll let you know how it affects things. coming up, we'll look at bin

attacks. the downing of a u.s. helicopter in somalia. the world trade center bombing. the bombing of u.s. military barracks in saudi arabia. the 1998 twin bombings and the attack on "uss cole" in 2000. his most devastating terrorist activity was the 2001 attack on the trade center in new york city and the pentagon attack. however, after american troops moved into the country in 2002, he was forced to flee to the remote caves and mountains. the search for bin laden was like no other in history. he remained an elusive quary. he remained one step ahead of

going to affect the markets today. good morning, nicole. >> you are right. futures jumped sharply on the news of bin laden's death. oil prices are also down more than 1% to 112 buck as barrel, roughly. three year lows against currencies on the belief osama bin laden's death could make the u.s. subject to other terrorist attacks. traders say the gains may be short lived given that other issues pressured and preok pied green backs trading. asia rose overnight. their markets are closed on holiday. europe is higher but london is closed on holiday. wall street is coming off a

by the middle of the week, near record highs. in livermore, we are in the 40s, 47 degrees. mid-50s in concord. 54, 53 in hayward. later on today, the mid-70s, maybe upper 70s in pleasanton and livermore. 76 in fairfield. if you are going to san francisco, a gorgeous day there, 70 degree weather. high pressure builds in throughout the next few days. by wednesday, it sets up over the bay area. that's going to drive the offshore push. that means the warm, down sloping winds bring the temperatures to near record levels. 88 degrees on wednesday. warm for thursday. an on shore push at that time. this weekend, nice and dry and comfortable. no rain in the forecast. back to you. >> thank you much. coming up, the rest of the news for the day.

bridge toll plaza. i'll let you know of reroutes. we look westbound 80 at san pablo. we have that investigation. the coroner arrived on scene after the big rig ran into the power pole at the off ramp. i hear they are laying flares out. they haven't told me what lanes are going to be blocked, if any. prepare for that road to close. the coroner is on scene and there will be an investigation continuing. the better news is it may clear in time for the bulk of the traffic to come through just after 6:00 a.m. carquinez is moving smoothly. no warnings as far as the wind goes. east bay over to the peninsula is looking nice now. a lot of folks getting offspring break this week. >> thank you. highway 4 in pittsburg this morning, you may want to plan ahead.

cal trans will close all lanes of highway 4 from midnight to 5:30 in the morning, starting today. a detour will direct traffic to enter and exit the highway from loveridge road. cal trans is refitting the bridge. it says the closures will happen on weekdays until may 20th. shopping for a new car or truck just got more expensive. gm leaders say prices increase $123 a vehicle because of higher metal prices. it affects all buick, chevrolet, gmc and cadillac models. it's a go for hbo go. it's available. download an app. it will work on iphones, ipad touches and google android systems as well. jerry brown following nose

surgery had a procedure done to remove a cancerous growth on friday. he says he will not take time off. he's working on extending the tax increase proposal to close the state's budget deficit. he has to cancel a number of appearances while he recoops. bryan stow could be moved closer to home. stow did not have siezures for the past three days after coming out of a coma inducing medication. stow has been in the hospital since he was brutally beaten after a los angeles dodgers game in late march. .downlcdoat shu .wn why more than 1,000 people were evacuateed from the island.
