bin laden, the leader of al qaeda. a terrorist who is responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children. >> we continue to follow the amazing news out of the middle east this morning. osama bin laden is dead. good morning, i'm laura garcia-cannon. bin laden was killed during a u.s. raid in pakistan. it's 60 miles north of the capital city, islamabad. u.s. troops raided in the search for bin laden. he was killed during a fire fight and has been buried at sea in accordance with islamic laws and tradition. the news of osama bin laden's death led to celebrations across the world. people lined up outside george w. bush's house thanking

president bush. he says no matter how long it takes justice will be done. leaders all over the world are reacting. afghan president ham id karzai says it's a blow to terrorism. he used bin laden's death to call in international forces to focus on pakistan where al qaeda and taliban leaders live. karzai offered his appreciation to the forces that lost their lives and pledged afghan support in the war on terror. the news of bin laden's death has a special meaning to many bay area families. they were directly affected by the september 11th attacks. their friends and family members were on the flight bound from newark, new jersey to san francisco. they lost their lives in the prospect but saved hundreds of

others. damian trujillo is live where a memorial for the heroes of flight 93 is. he has reaction from a mother of one of the passengers. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. flight 93, there were 44 people on board, including the four hijackers. i was here before the memorial opened in union city. i got the chills then and you can't help but get the chills now. it's so powerful. it honors a 20-year-old from japan. as you mentioned, mark bingeham, the 31-year-olds from san francisco. he remember his heroic efforts on the plane and the other passengers on board the 757 on 9/11. somewhere above ohio, the hijackers took over. several passengers made a pact to charge the hijackers. the plane went down in pennsylvania before they could reach their target. on the plane were many

passengers from the bay area including mark bingham. his mother has been on this program several times over the last ten years. she was back last night speaking about the killing of osama bin laden. >> i am so pleased with the defeat of terrorism and the defeat of this particular terrorist who symbolizes such ugliness, terror. the united states has a reason to be glad. it is a righteous nation. we are a righteous people and try hard to do the right thing. >> reporter: she said it's too bad there has to be so much rejoicing over another death even if that death is of osama bin laden. her son, mark bingham here in the system.

demonstrations and public gatherings today and in the coming days. they are paying extra attention to transit areas and places of warship. if you are flying today, they say sfo has not made any changes to security or flights but it is always a good idea to call ahead, just in case. regardless, political analysts say long term america needs to be prepared for revenge. >> across the world, americans and otherwise have beefed up their security. sometimes not until six months, a year, two years later, then they say by the way, this is because of that. i think everyone has to be on guard not only tonight and tomorrow, but really for years to come. >> on our facebook page, we have posed the question, are

westbound 80. you are connected on southbound 880 past the bay bridge. that is the connector ramp that is closed. chp is going to send folks over. coming off the east shore, take 580 eastbound to oakland and 980 back to 880. it's a longer drive. i it's going to add a few minutes to your commute. further up, we are looking at the east shore freeway. the commute direction there at san pablo. we have a deadly investigation accident going on. flares are laid out. i can't get confirmation if the onramp is closed. this is at least affecting one lane as you pass by. you can use hill top drive to be safe. a little slowing heading into the 50s. 880 moves nicely past the coliseum. flashing lights on 880 to

what was your reaction when you heard the news that osama bin laden was dead? >> it was surreal. it's a decade coming and news that many of us have been waiting for. so, first surprised, then i think gratitude in a certain way. >> it is interesting to note, no doubt you listened to president obama last night as he addressed the nation about the death. he made a specific reference about muslim's. expand on that, if you could. >> yeah. i think it was a key and very important statement. he talked about how we are not at war with islam and osama bin laden was not a muslim leader. he murdered millions of muslims across the world and took lives of muslim's here. it's important to note from racist statements coming from congressman peter king all the way to glenn beck. it's important we get the

statements of solidarity like people from president obama now. >> from our leaders and for people to educate themselves and to understand. thank you for taking the time to join us so early this morning. >> thank you. we continue to follow the top story this morning. we are talking act the death of osama bin laden. it affects so many different things. it's already affecting business this morning. nicole lappen is live with how the markets are reacting. good morning. >> absolutely interesting. we saw futures jumping sharply on the news of osama bin laden's death. first when it crossed the wires, the dow looks like it's going to open 90 points higher as we were higher this morning when the news first came down. oil prices are down. we are watching that closely. 1% to 112 bucks a barrel. it's fear driven as is the dollar. the dollar moved off the

three-year lows against other currency that is osama bin laden's death could make us less subject to terrorist attacks. analysts say the gains are probably short lived given that other issues pressured. significantly the greenback like the soaring u.s. deficit. asia rose over nine all though some of their markets closed. europe is higher. london is closed there on holiday. wall street is coming off a stellar april. the dough is down a three-year high. the dow was up to 12,810. the nasdaq was higher, 2873. we'll wait and see. market opens in 1:15. whether or not that was short lived euphoria or if it has staying power in markets. >> thank you so much, nicole. good seeing you. 5:15 now.

let's check in with christina loren with a look at the forecast. rising temperatures? >> rising temperatures and breezy conditions. you'll see a lot of american flags flowing in the breeze. this afternoon, windy throughout the wind prone areas. take it easy, if you drive a high profile vehicle. the storm track is well off to the north. great morning to take a look at the stars on your way to work this morning. a clear shot across the bay area. 43 in santa rosa. it's chilly in the east bay this morning and the north bay. as we head through noon, by lunchtime, you are breaking with temperatures already in the 70s in the south bay. we are expecting 90s by wednesday. enjoy today's weather and tomorrow's weather as well. 73 in oakland. 77 in los gatos and 73 in gilroy. here is the extended outlook. it looks so good. temperatures nice and

the sharks won, 2-1. they are leading the series against detroit, 2-0. they are going to be in detroit. we are going to cheer them on, no matter where they are. >> good morning to you. the upper east shore freeway, westbound 80 as you come past san pablo road, there's an accident at the gore point, where the road separates from the off ramp and the freeway. you can see the slowing. speeds toward 30 miles per hour on the approach now. there are flares on the corner. almost an hour now with the coroner and the investigation. it may have at least one lane of the off ramp closed. it will affect the drive because of the slowing on the upper east

shore freeway up from berkeley to emeryville and the other accident. the sig-alert was declared because of the ramp from westbound 80 to southbound 880. chp just let me know they have reopened or are going to reopen in a couple minutes. stay clear taking 580 to 980 if you are near the area. let's get a look at the toll plaza itself. a lighter volume of traffic. a few more headlights than the last time we took a look. the connector should reopen and the distraction to the toll plaza should clear as well. back to the maps, things are moving nicely through the tunnel. then concord, 680, we see 75. watch the speeds. it will build over the next few minutes. antioch is slowing at the rio

elementary school will be in court today. a hearing is scheduled for one of two teens being tried as an adult. they are charged with aggravated arson where damage was $6.5 million. plans are under way to completely rebuild the structure by next year. alcatraz island evacuated forcing 1100 people to leave immediately. it happened yesterday. park rangers were unable to turn off a blaring fire alarm. they had to ask people to leave. the alarm went off at 1:30. park rangers arrived and found no sign of a fire. the island should be back open this morning. a big tourist attraction there. the world first learned osama bin laden was dead through twitter. the tweets started with the first gunshots. >> the fellow in pakistan could

not have known he was tweeting history. he is an i.t. worker. helicopter hovering above is a rare event. a huge window shaking bang. he didn't know, but u.s. navy s.e.a.l.s were attacking osama bin laden not in a cave in afghanistan but in a mansion in one of the largest cities in the middle of pakistan. meanwhile, the first semiofficial word was leaked by secretary of defense, donald rumsfeld. keith urban wrote i am told by a reputable person they have killed osama bin laden. hot damn. good triumphed over evil. >> nothing is happening outside. >> several reporters called it twitter, cnn moment.

week. it's monday, may 2nd. this is today in the bay. good morning to you. i'm laura garcia-cannon. we're going to get right to the top story. of course, what everyone is talking about, the death of osama bin laden. marla tellez is live in the news room with a look at exactly what happened and what's next. good morning, marla. >> good morning, laura. all eyes turned to osama bin laden's number two man. we are just getting a look at him. take a look for yourself. he is seen as next in line for the world east top terror job now that bin laden is dead. here is an overview of the stunning news out of the middle east. four helicopters swooped in and carried out the raid that killed osama bin laden. it happened at a fortress-like

compound 60 miles north of the capital city, islamabad. it's a custom built home designed to hide someone of significance surrounded by 12 to 18 foot walls topped with barbed wire. it was in a middle class neighborhood. in his response to the american people, last night, president obama said, quote, justice has been done. osama bin laden has already been buried at sea in accordance with islamic laws and tradition. as for the future of al qaeda, it's believed bin laden's pred assessor. he was last seen ten years ago in northern pakistan in 2003. just this morning a top al qaeda official promised revenge for the killing of militant leader,

93 were from union city, but this city felt compelled to honor the 40 passengers and crew members aboard the airliner. four terrorists took over the plane above ohio. flight 93 was headed to sfo from new jersey. they high jacketed the plane and headed for the white house or the capital. mark bingham made a pact with others, they were going to rush the terrorists to foil their plan. flight 93 went down in flames near shanksville, pennsylvania. there were no survivors. his mother spoke last night with diane dwyer. >> i am so proud of those who worked so hard. many lives have been lost. this is a time for us to

last year, they came under scrutiny for the quality of work being done there. san jose city manager will release the budget today. there will be cuts. it's so common these days. 600 city workers were told they will lose their jobs or be demoted. 400 positions need to be eliminated to balance the budget. it's along with 220 other jobs saved through one-time funding last year. is city asked all unions to take a 10% wage concession. a third of the city worker unions agreed so far including police and firefighters. business as usual for governor jerry brown following surgery he had on his nose. he had a procedure done to remove a cancerous growth on his nose last friday. the governor will not take time off but plans on working on a
