good morning, everyone. welcome to a special edition of "today" on a monday morning, the 2nd of may. i'm matt lauer down at ground zero along church street in lower manhattan. meredith vieira is back up in studio 1a. ground zero, this is where nearly 3,000 people died during the attacks on 9/11 in 2001. of course 184 more died at the pentagon in washington, d.c., 40 others died in that field when flight 93 crashed in shanksville, pennsylvania. and there is a large outpouring of emotion here as you might expect, meredith. >> i was going to say, matt, an extremely emotional morning. obviously the headlines of every newspaper this morning, "new york times," bin laden killed by

u.s. forces in pakistan, obama says declaring justice has been done. headlines in other newspapers more pointed than that, "the new york post," gut him, vengeance at last. and "the daily news" puts it this way -- rot in hell. president obama made the announcement in a late-night address from the white house and this morning we are learning new details about what unfolded in that raid, matt. >> reporter: that's right. we're learning a lot more. an incredibly successful raid by u.s. special forces, a dangerous mission but one that they appear to have been completely successful at. an idea of what's been going on here for the last 12 hours or so and in other locations around the country, people have been stopping by ground zero, now a massive construction project, just to kind of reflect on the news they've been receiving. we saw a lot of people gathering outside the white house and other places. we're going to have some of that reaction in just a couple minutes, meredith. >> all right, matt.

we have complete coverage beginning with chief white house correspondent chuck todd. chuck, good morning to you. it was an operation eight months in the planning with the president personally overseeing five meetings in the final six weeks as the u.s. government zeroed in on public enemy number one, osama bin laden. it was shortly before midnight when the president announced the news. >> tonight, i can report to the american people and to the world that the united states has conducted an operation that killed osama bin laden, the leader of al qaeda. >> reporter: the president made it clear getting bin laden was always a top priority. >> shortly after taking office i directed leon panetta, the director of the cia, to make the killing or capture of bin laden the top priority of our war against al qaeda. >> reporter: while intelligence officials long suspected bin laden was hiding in pakistan, the exact location wasn't known until august. >> after years of painstaking work by our intelligence

community i was briefed on a possible lead to bin laden. >> reporter: that lead, a bin laden courier whom intelligence operatives had been tracking for years. he led them to a large compound in an affluent town 35 miles outside of islamabad, pakistan. >> last week i determined that we had enough intelligence to take action and authorized an operation to get osama bin laden and bring him to justice. >> reporter: the president gave that final order friday morning in the situation room, just minutes before leaving washington to tour the tornado devastation in alabama. he called the death of bin laden the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al qaeda. >> usa! usa! >> reporter: the news spread quickly and jubilant crowds gathered at the white house. >> i wanted to come out here and show my support for the u.s. >> reporter: sunday night white house officials made calls to key leaders all over the country. the president personally briefed former presidents bill clinton

and george w. bush, who called it a momentous achievement and added -- with nearly 150,000 troops fighting in afghanistan and iraq, some see this as a big morale boost. >> i think it's an enormous shot in the arm to the u.s. armed forces. 48,000 have been killed fighting the war on terror. taking down this iconic figure is a very significant event. >> reporter: the president called the killing of bin laden a testament to the greatness of our country. with the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks four months away he had a special message for those who lost loved ones in the attack. >> justice has been done. >> reporter: the president monitored the actions taking place in pakistan almost in real time. in fact, when the special forces

relayed back that they got bin laden, his code name was geronimo. so it came back like this -- geronimo k.i.a. for killed in action. meredith? >> chuck todd, thank you very much. 7:05 on the west coast. now to matt at ground zero. >> reporter: meredith, thank you very much. obviously, this was a precision mission carried out by u.s. special forces, and it was a mission not without some very dangerous and tense moments. jim miklaszewski is live at the pentagon with the details we know. mick, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. remarkably, u.s. intelligence officials weren't even really sure that osama bin laden was at that compound north of islamabad. in fact, according to one u.s. official, there was no smoking gun to put him there. but in the end, the evidence was compelling enough for president obama to give those navy s.e.a.l.s the green light to attack. friday morning, just minutes before departing the white house on his way to inspect tornado damage in alabama, president obama gave the order to launch

the operation to kill osama bin laden. more than two days later, u.s. special operations forces attacked bin laden's heavily fortified compound at abbottabad 35 miles north of islamabad. 1:00 a.m. monday morning pakistan time, in a scene straight out of an action thriller, u.s. helicopters loaded with american commandos closed in for the kill. on approach, one helicopter had mechanical problems and crash-landed but no one on board was hurt. within seconds the two special forces teams flooded the compound and came under heavy fire. it was obvious bin laden would not be taken alive. u.s. officials say armed with an automatic rifle the al qaeda leader fired on the americans who then shot and killed bin laden. >> then the first bang came. three other consecutive bangs came, then there was one fifth final bang which made the sky orange. that's when i had to duck. i thought, this is something really big.

>> reporter: in the exchange the navy s.e.a.l.s. killed two al qaeda couriers and one of bin laden's adult sons. one woman, who the al qaeda gunmen used as a human shield, was also shot and killed. when the shooting stopped, the americans loaded bin laden's body on a helicopter tb transferred to afghanistan. nearly ten years after 9/11, the operation to kill bin laden was over in 40 minutes. now, bin laden's body was buried at sea overnight but not before intelligence analysts identified the body as that of bin laden through details comparisons to photos of the al qaeda leader. a more detailed and reliable determination will be made through dna testing. the results of that should be available later today, matt. >> jim miklaszewski at the pentagon for us this morning. we're getting reaction to the killing of osama bin laden from some top officials with the administration and officials from previous administrations, among them, hillary clinton and

dick cheney. here's what they had to say. >> even as we mark this milestone, we should not forget that the battle to stop al qaeda and its syndicate of terror will not end with the death of bin laden. indeed, we must take this opportunity to renew our resolve and redouble our efforts. >> when you think about all the effort that went into it and the -- it's been ten years, and it's been worth all of that effort for the final result. but we should never underestimate how hard it was. >> hillary clinton and chadick cheney commenting this morning. back during the attacks of 2001, rudy giuliani was the mayor of new york city. he joins us now by phone. >> how are you? >> i'm fine, thank you. just give me your personal

reaction to the news. >> well, i feel a great sense of satisfaction that justice has been accomplished, but i don't feel -- i don't feel as if this is over, this war is still going on. and i have tremendous admiration for the courage that it took to execute this operation from the president right down to the people who actually did it. >> i'm hear on church street. you know this area very well, mr. mayor. >> i do. >> you were here on 9/11 as those buildings fell and three days later when then president george w. bush came to the rubble and declared that the people who brought those buildings down would hear us soon. did you ever think in your wildest imagination it would take ten years to bring osama bin laden to justice? >> no, i didn't. at the time i thought it would be done much more quickly, but having reflected back on it and all the different murder investigations i've been involved in and sometimes they take 10 and 20 years. but the fact is that whatever jus sis is done gives you a sense of real satisfaction.

and although it doesn't bring back any of our loved ones, in fact, it makes the pain a little bit worse right now today, there is a sense of satisfaction that the right thing has been done. i really do congratulate the president and the members of our military and intelligence teams. this was a very difficult thing to do, much more difficult than people realize. >> yeah. and as a former mayor of this city, you have been in the situation room with intelligence officials on countless occasions. so what happens now? clearly we have always had a target on our backs here in new york city. are you worried that in the wake of the killing of osama bin laden that there will be a renewed effort by other terrorists to send a message to the people not only of new york but of the united states? >> yes. i think that's very appropriate that the city and the country be on much more heightened alert. i think in the short run this could be dangerous for us. in the long run, this is a very, very good development in the war against islamic extremist terrorism. he was a major symbol, and you

cannot underestimate the value of taking out a major symbol like that. but in the short run, this could create problems for us that we have to be very alert to. >> rudy, i'd like you to comment on something for me. shortly after 9/11, i remember, and you wrote about this in one of your books, that you commented to then president bush that you wanted to be the one to execute osama bin laden. and i think you even said that you thought president bush thought you were speaking rhetorically at that time, but you were not. can you elaborate on that? >> yeah. i remember it as if it were yesterday. it was on september 14th, and we were at an air force base in new jersey and the president came off the plane and greeted governor pataki, then greeted me, and said, what can i do for you? and the first thing i said is you can let me execute bin laden when you catch him. that was the sense of anger that i had and also the sense that he killed so many of my own people in new york that i might be symbolically a good person to do it.

but now i'm very satisfied that this has been accomplished. i can't tell you how much admiration i have for the people who carried out this mission. as i said from the president to the people who were right there on the ground, it took a lot of courage to do this in pakistan. just think, matt, if something had gone wrong, if three innocent people had been killed and there would have been a mistake. a president would be undergoing tremendous criticism now. our military would. and that risk is always there when you make a decision like this. >> right. real quickly. i mentioned where i am. from where i'm standing, rudy, i can see the freedom tower, which is under construction right now, due to be completed in 2013. when you look at the freedom tower and you hear the news of the morning concerning osama bin laden, although you've said it is perhaps now more dangerous a time than ever, do you feel as if it's a new chanter? >> yes. i believe some of the burden has been lifted. it's a very difficult psychological thing to describe about when a you lose someone

that you love. but a sense of justice does help. it doesn't replace what you've lo, but it does help. and i think when we deal with the memorial on the tenth anniversary it's going to be somewhat easier that he's been brought to justice. >> former new york city mayor rudy giuliani. mr. mayor, thanks for joining us this morning. >> thank you, matt. >> let's go back up to studio 1a and meredith. >> thank you very much, matt. "time" magazine reporter omar warash is in pakistan where bin laden was killed and is with us by phone. omar, good morning. i know you've been talking with the locals there. what are they saying about what happened? did anyone see or hear anything? >> pretty much everyone within about a six-kilometer radius heard this intensity last night. one of the eyewitnesses, a young student, said he actually saw two gunship helicopters approach the area. this was something very, very unusual for people here.

generally, a three-hour drive away from islamabad, is a quiet town. it's even right now -- it seems life is sort of passing as normal, but you can see there's not much activity here in general. they heard the helicopters approach. subsequent to that, there was the sound of a loud explosion which residents here believe was the sound of a helicopter crashing. after that, they said they heard a car race past quite quickly. and then the helicopters left. this all went over a period of about 30 minutes, they say. the panic created by that, particularly the sound of the explosion, jolted people and brought them out in the streets. one resident wondered whether someone was invading them. others simply had no idea. later when they woke up to discover the news of what had happened, they expressed total

bewilderment that something like this could happen within their own town just here. >> omar, what can you tell us about who owned that house? were people in the area at all suspicious that bin laden could be there? >> well, no one i've spoken to says that they saw bin laden or thought they saw bin laden or even heard rumors of him being here. i did, however, speak to a construction worker who lives in that same neighborhood of the town. this compound is in an area and this construction worker, whose name is rafiq, he said to me that he walked past the house, he considered it suspicious, it's a large compound. it's got -- the land is close to an acre. it has a 10- to 12-foot-high wall with a bungalow inside. he said -- i have no way of

verifying this -- the resident there said it was owned by a pashtun man by the name of akbar. and nothing beyond that is known. for many people, this neighborhood was unremarkable in many ways. it's a middle-class neighborhood. it's populated by people like doctors and businessmen, professionals who drive toyotas and hondas and work in the area and there was nothing particularly unremarkable -- nothing remarkable about this neighborhood at all. >> omar, final question. there are some people in the arab world who are saying today that osama bin laden is now a martyr and that vengeance will be taken on america. do you hear any of that among the people that you're speaking to? >> no. i mean, people here i've spoken to, some of them, there is no sort of outpouring of support here. we haven't seen people taking to the streets. that may change later on, of course.

people here, however, they've heard repeatedly that bin laden was in pakistan. they were never sure. they heard rumors of his death. some people now even aren't completely convinced. they say they'd like to see more evidence. and the fact that this could happen in their neighborhood, in terms of bin laden, they aren't particularly strong feelings either way. it's not as if people here are ecstatic that he's been killed, but they aren't sad either. >> all right. omar waraich thanks for your perspective. we really appreciate it. and, you know, matt, when you hear to mauomar talk about the compound with the barbed wire, it's right here a military academy and stronghold. >> right. >> you have to wonder why do pakistani officials would fail to know that he was in there, and if they didn't know kind of why not? >> yeah. there are going to be a lot of

questions asked about what the pakistanis should have known or did know, especially when you consider that the united states has given them billions of dollars in military aid. just to set the scene a little bit more for you here, a lot of people stopping by, meredith, throughout the morning. before we were beginning the show, i was prepping and a guy walked up and put his hand on hi shoulders and said, matt, my name is brian lang. i lost two cousins at the world trade center on 9/11 and i want you to know of all the trillions of dollars that have been spent in the war on terror and hunting osama bin laden many the last ten years, in my opinion, it was worth it. and he was very emotional when he said it, meredith. >> absolutely, matt. and i think this september 11th, is fact that they did get osama bin laden, as former mayor giuliani said, will put people's hearts a little bit at ease. >> a little easier. >> let's get a check of the other top stories of the morning. ann curry is at the news desk.

overseas markets are surging on the news of osama bin laden's death this morning. mandy drury is at the stock exchange. what are we expecting in u.s. markets? >> u.s. stocks at this stage are up on the news of osama bin laden. it is likely to only be a short-term sentiment as there is no direct economic impact from his death. also after literally dropping on the news, oil prices are now higher. most of the risk premium attached to oil prices is based on the war in libya and widening middle eastern unrest and not bin laden per se. chrysler, its first profit since leaving bankruptcy two years ago. libyan tanks shelled a town this morning. on sunday, pro-government mobs attacked the british and italian embassies in libya. they were retaliating for the bombing of moammar gadhafi's family compound which killed one of his sons and three of his grandchildren.

a recovery effort is under way across the tornado-ravaged southeast. homeland security secretary janeth napolitano has promised a steady stream of federal aid. on sunday, president obama added tennessee to the states with disaster declarations, making federal funding available for the cleanup there. search crews have recovered one of the black boxes from air france flight 447, the plane that mysteriously crashed into the atlantic while en route to paris from brazil. all 228 people who were on board were kill and the shuttle "endeavour" will not launch today. ed. nasa engineers are working to repair an electrical glitch that will delay lift-off until may 8, if not later. those are some of the other top stories at 21 minutes past the hour. now back to meredith and al. >> thank you very much. a quick look at the weather, al. >> midsection of the country a little trouble, dallas to ohio.

7:30 now on this monday morning, the 2nd of may 2011. you are looking at ground zero from the top of the rock. people have gathered throughout the night upon learning the news that osama bin laden was killed by u.s. special forces. i'm meredith vieira inside studio 1a. matt is at ground zero for us. >> this is one of those occasions, one of those news stories where people will stop and remember where they were when they heard the news that osama bin laden had been killed after a nearly ten-year search

for him. you know, we'll be hearing stories all morning long about people and how they receive the news. thousands of people were watching a baseball game between the new york mets and the philadelphia phillies at citizen bank field when the news started to spread. people started to check their blackberrys and other communication devices and then spontaneous applause and the chants of "usa, usa." an emotional scene in philadelphia. i'll be joined by tom brokaw who will have new reporting on how this operation unfolded in pakistan in a moment. meredith? >> i had already gone to bed last night when we started getting phone calls from our children who are 22, 19 and 17 in different parts of the country, each one calling to say, mom, dad, put on the news. there was something surreal about it. i didn't understand what was going on but it's sunk in this morning, matt. >> we are starting to hear a lot of reaction.

i'm joined by nbc's ron allen. he's got more on how people in new york, across the country and other parts of the world are reacting. >> this is usually a solemn place, but ground zero was transformed. people said it was the most joyful occasion they have experienced here. when you look around the country there seem to be celebrations happening just about everywhere. outside the white house they began filling the streets, even before president obama had finished addressing the nation. a crowd in the thousands that poured from pennsylvania avenue into lafayette park. >> i thought it was a way to be a part of american history. it has been a long fight. >> reporter: so many said they were completely surprised, had no idea the dramatic late night announcement would be about osama bin laden. spontaneous celebrations erupted

across the country. viewers sent in pictures of their own memories. at a sunday night baseball game between the philadelphia phillies and the new york mets, fans got the news on blackberrys, sending up a chorus of cheers for the usa. [ cheers ] >> reporter: students emptied college dorms as word spread on twitter and social media. >> i saw a bunch of people facebook updating about osama bin laden's dead. ♪ god bless america ♪ >> reporter: nowhere was it more profound than at ground zero. joy in a place usually heavy with loss. kevin lost his father, a firefighter. he's just back from afghanistan. >> when i think about this, all the guys still there willing to put themselves out there.

>> reporter: firefighter rocco chiaracello was at ground zero when president bush warned the terrorists, including bin laden that they would soon hear from america. >> it took almost ten years but thanks to the soldiers, the president, the firefighters. >> reporter: in texas, a crowd adorned the gate of the former president's house in red, white and blue. >> osama bin laden is dead. i had to bring the flag out tonight. >> reporter: many who lost loved ones, it was triumph laced with pain of remembering the tragedy. for diane mazaroli who lost her husband michael, a businessman, knowing bin laden paid the ultimate price finally makes it easier for her to be at ground zero. >> i come every year to the memorial which is a very sad

thing. it's bittersweet. i was crying when it happened. but overall i'm happy. it's a day to celebrate. >> reporter: a lot of jubilation, but a real mix of emotions for people here. a powerful night here in ground zero. the word i heard more than any was justice. some said vengeance, but more justice and a feeling that bin laden got what he deserved. >> nearly ten years in the making. ron allen, thank you very much. we'll have much more ahead from ground zero in a couple of minutes. meredith, back to you in studio 1a. >> mark bingham was a passenger on flight 93 when the flight was hijacked and crashed in pennsylvania. his mother alice hogland is with us now. good morning. >> good morning. >> it's been almost ten years since you lost your son mark. your reaction when you heard about osama bin laden? >> well, it was disbelief

mingled with hope. i had despaired of ever finding this day to be a reality. i am relieved and very heartened by the news. it is the culmination of effort. a good effort by a combined intelligence community and our military. it has really paid off, all those months of intelligence-gathering. >> the president last night in his address to the american people said that justice has been done. do you agree with that? >> it was an eloquent speech. i applauded every word. barack obama has been a real friend to the 9/11 families. he is working hard to fulfill the promises that he has made and george w. bush deserves a great deal of credit. he promised the 9/11 families that he would not relent in his effort to find the perpetrators of the bloodshed of 9/11.

this is a very strange and bittersweet day. violence marking the end of the search. not nearly as violent and bloody as the carnage that osama bin laden himself perpetrated on the american people. >> alice, you testified on behalf of the defense during the trial of zacharias moussaui. would you have liked to see osama bin laden stand trial? >> i would have liked to see osama bin laden stand trial. however, i have lost faith to some extent in our civilian or article iii courts. we seemed to get bogged down in the details and certain liberal groups following their own agenda have taken the essence of the 9/11 struggle out of the

hands of the families. and that is a travesty. so the short answer is in some way i'm relieved that the man has no one to face now except his fwod. >> -- god. >> is it important to you -- and i know it is to some -- to see a picture of osama bin laden's body to know, in fact, he is dead. >> i take their word for it. i trust them implicitly. >> as i said in the beginning it's been ten years since you lost mark. he was considered one of the heroes aboard flight 93, one of those who stormed the cockpit to stop the hijackers. is there a day that goes by you don't think about him? >> not a day. my son was the light of my life. everyone who died on september 11, 2001 had people who loved them and who miss them and were terribly robbed by the actions of osama bin laden. i'm very proud of what mark did,

along with his fellow passengers -- tom burnett, jeremy glik, tom behmer and richard diagno and that little group of guys that took a vote and decided to run forward armed with nothing more than their fists and whatever they could find on board to fight real evil, people who were determined tole kill them and everyone else they could on the ground. >> finally, alice, one victim's family said of the news everything begins anew because of this. do you feel that way? >> i think it is a point in time of which the american people can be very proud, which we can take stock and realize how veriile valuable our military are. i'm so proud of the courageous men who took the matter in hand, seized the moment just as the guys did on flight 93. they didn't let the moment pass. they nailed it and they got

we're back with more of "today" on a monday morning as we are learning reaction to the news that osama bin laden has been killed by a strategic operation by u.s. special forces. i'm live at ground zero joined by nbc's tom brokaw. in washington, david gregory joins us, the moderator of "meet the press" as does the washington d.c. bureau chief forle al-arabia. good morning to you. tom, i want to take you to september 14, 2001 when president bush stood on the rubble here and said, i hear you and soon the people who brought down these buildings will hear us all. it took ten years to bring osama bin laden to justice. >> last night i got ale call giving me a heads up and i said, i need to know more. he said, it's somebody we have been looking for for a long time. if you think about it, it has been ten years. the real issue this morning, matt, is how much influence does

osama bin laden still have on the movement? obviously it's an enormous victory for the united states to get rid of this man who brought not only pain and grief to this country but to the islamic world as well in terms of what he triggered. i do know more about the operation at this point. the compound is large with a lot of buildings. they thought they know the building in which he was located. they were right and it was a fierce firefight. we don't yet know how many others were killed. no americans were killed but a number of people around osama bin laden were killed. they didn't tell the pakistanis until they left. that gives you an idea of the relationship between the countries. >> david, clearly this operation raises all kinds of questions. he was not living in a primitive cave along the border. he was living close to islamabad, not bad from the equivalent, as tom put it from the u.s.le military academy of

westpoint, their version of that. what does it raise in terms of questions as far as how much pakistan has actually been cooperating with us in this war on terror? >> i think the obvious question is if they knew and didn't cooperate more, why not, when they have a pretty sordid history of not only working with al qaeda and the taliban to their intelligence service but also if they didn't know, how could they not with that kind of intelligence operation? you're right. senior u.s. military commanders, the intelligence community felt he was so deeply isolated in the tribal region but we have known from pakistani leadership throughout that there was a sense that going after bin laden would somehow destabilize their government. there was a lot of sympathy for bin laden, a huge bounty on his head, tens of millions of dollars and nobody turned him in. not in the tribal areas , not outside their capitol. >> ishan, what are you

expecting? >> there is a great deal of welcome. the government and importantly the yemeni government, palestinian authorities and others are welcoming the news. i think there will be few tears shed for this man, who according to a confirmation made by my network was responsible for the killing of almost 15,000 people, more than 8,000 of them. those in the arab world who would be sorry for osama bin laden shouldle know the criminality of this man knew no boundaries, no ethnic background. >> how much will the arab world be watching how we react to this? we are seeing spontaneous celebrations on the streets of new york, washington and other places. how will how we handle this news be viewed in the arab world? >> i think so far it was handled

properly. if it was a muslim burial, that's very fine. i don't think there will be the kind of reaction some people in the west are expecting. celebrating, if you will, the murder -- the killing of a murderer is not going to be seen as insulting to many people in the arab world. look at the people of benghazi and throughout liberated areas. they were celebrating news that gadhafi was the subject of an attack. i think a lot of people in the arab world will be relieved. and with tunisia and egypt and other parts of the arab world the arabs are resorting to peacefulle ways of changing their world. they don't need osama bin laden. the whole arab movement was a huge repudiation of everything that osama bin laden represented. >> thank you very much. david gregory, thank you as well.

8:00 on this monday morning, may 2, 2011. as the world reacts to the news that al qaeda leader and mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, osama bin laden, is dead. i'm meredith vieira. matt lauer is at ground zero. bin laden was shot and killed by u.s. forces in a mansion north of pakistan's capital. the news triggering scenes of celebration outside the capitol and at ground zero in new york. donald rumsfeld will speak out in a live interview, but first savannah guthrie has new details on the raid. what have you learned?

>> good morning to you, meredith. in talking to a u.s. official this morning, we have learned more on the raid and the fact that the president was actually able to monitor what was happening on the ground in pakistan during this raid in realtime. this u.s. official wouldn't describe the technology that enabled this but suffice it to say the president had audio and visual updates as the raid was unfolding. at approximately 3:55 eastern time when they got word that osama bin laden was killed, i'm told in the situation room applause went up. officials also say there were two heart-stopping moments during the raid itself. first is when the helicopters that were supposed to, as i understand it, not land on the compound, but rather hover and lower navy seals -- excuse me, special ops forces onto the ground. however, one of the helicopters stopped working. it hit the ground. i'm told it didn't crash but it was on the ground. the seals went forward with the operation.

as that was unfolding they brought in a third helicopter, an emergency helicopter. you can imagine the moment, meredith, as the seals were coming out with the corpse of osama bin laden. in that moment decided to detonate, blow up that helicopter with a huge explosion. they then boarded the other two helicopters. the other heart-stopping moment is as the helicopters were leaving and still in pakistani air space and, remember, the u.s. government didn't inform the pakistanis of this. they scrambled their own fighter jets not sure what these helicopters were, not sure if they were allied with pakistan. very concerned. as you can imagine, incredibly tense moments. to repeat, the president able to monitor from the situation room. >> you have to wonder what he was thinking. so much could have gone wrong. >> so much. i'm told that the moment that the helicopter went down, i'm told the tension in the room was palpable. it was blackhawk down times a million, one official said to me.

>> savannah, thank you for those details. now back to matt at ground zero. matt? >> thank you very much. i want to find out what reaction to this is in the middle east. richard engel joins us live from benghazi, libya. richard, good morning to you. what is the reaction? >> reporter: good morning, matt. i was just listening with great interest to savannah's account how the white house is describing what happened. in the middle east. there is also a different version of events that is starting to emerge, particularly from the people who supported osama bin laden. if you look on websites or some commentators on arabic language television they are starting to engage in myth-building, describing this as a heroic moment, that osama bin laden fought to the end, that he was there, he bravely stood up against the navy seals and that even osama bin laden's wife stood in front of him, showing loyalty to the end and sacrificed her own life.

in general, however, i think it's fair to say that the reaction has been relatively positive. people in the middle east are happy to be rid of osama bin laden. he was an embarrassment to the region. he was an embarrassment to the religion of islam, many here felt, but he does have some supporters who are taking to the airwaves now, trying to create an alternative myth to what happened. >> all right. nbc's richard engel in libya for us this morning. richard, thank you very much. now let's go north about 30 or 40 blocks to ann curry who is standing by at the news desk on a very busy morning. good morning to you. >> good morning. a promise from janet napolitano on a steady stream of aid for alabama and mississippi. john yang is in tuscaloosa with more on this recovery effort. hey, john, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the recovery effort is in full swing.

you can hear utility trucks moving up the street here. but the two big challenges remain are restoring power and accounting for the missing. five days after the tornado ripped through the center of tuscaloosa, we are learning the names of those who died. they cut across all ages from 5-year-old mikayla edwards to 88-year-old annie sayer, 22-year-old university of alabama student ashley harrison huddled in a closet with her boyfriend, football player carson tinker, as the storm approached. he survived. she didn't. people are finding ways to move forward. >> we are in this not just for one day, but we are here for the long haul. >> reporter: a pledge the federal government is making as well. >> we'll stand with them all the way. >> reporter: the worst natural disaster since katrina, the obama administration is determined to get it right. the president himself was here on friday. and on sunday, five federal

agency heads including homeland security secretary janette napolitano toured the disaster zones in alabama where 250 people lost their lives. the tornado left a trail of destruction, but the people rallying for the city are leaving only gratitude in their wake. >> we're all okay. we're all alive. >> reporter: the immediate demands today are for tarps to cover damaged billings, damaged roofs because there is heavy rain forecast for this afternoon. ann? >> john, thanks. libyan tanks shelled misrata overnight and again this morning on sunday pro-government mobs attacked the british and italian embassies in libya, they were retaliating for nato's bombing of moammar day gadhafi's family's compound which killed one of his sons and three of his grandchildren. japanese lawmakers gave approval to a $48 billion earthquake and tsunami relief budget to help pay for new housing and debris removal and also provide for hard-hit fishermen and

world. >> reporter: thanks, matt. good morning. the death of osama bin laden marks the end of an era. although perhaps no longer the world's most dangerous terrorist, he is the man responsible for the worst terror attack in american history. as word spread through news reports and socialle media, spontaneous gatherings outside the white house, at ground zero and around the country. young and old celebrating the end of bin laden. he was the world's most wanted terrorist. to most of the world, the embodiment of evil, but to radicalized muslims, a hero. in afghanistan in the 1980s osama bin laden fought against the soviets on america's side with guerillas trained and financed by the cia. >> there is no doubt in my mind at one point or another we probably armed him. >> reporter: then u.s. troops arrived in saudi arabia to fight the first gulf war against iraq. to bin laden, defiling his

birthpla birthplace. u.s. intelligence says bin laden built terror training camps, launching a global terror network. within two years back in afghanistan bin laden ordered this -- the destruction of two u.s. embassies in africa. august, 1998. >> we would use all the means at our disposal to bring those responsible to justice. >> reporter: president clinton retaliated, ordering 62 cruise missiles into bin laden's afghan straining camp. bin laden got away. then the turn of the century and the world celebrated. but according to court testimony, only after the cia had foiled a bin laden plot to attack five locations, including los angeles international airport. the following october a suicide bomber attacked the u.s.s. cole in yemen. 17 sailors were killed. american intelligence quickly developed intelligence linking the attack to bin laden who praised the bombing.

then bin laden's most devastating plot of all, september 11th. >> our responsibility to history is already clear. to answer these attacks and rid the world of evil. >> reporter: the u.s. answered with a five-month military strike in afghanistan, operation enduring freedom. >> there is an old poster out west i recall that said, wanted, dead or alive. >> reporter: while his top henchman and other top operatives were brought in, bin laden remained at large. for years administrations uh thought they had leads onlile to lose the trail. >> this is something that's bedevilled this government for years. we'll continue to try to hunt him down. we'll get him. >> reporter: now al qaeda has lost its leader after a manhunt for a man who literally terrorized the world. >> the death of bin laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort

to defeat al qaeda. it does not mark the end of our efforts. there is no doubt that al qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against us. we must and we will remain vigilant at home and abroad. >> reporter: senior officials say capturing or killing osama bin laden was the top priority. in effect he was public enemy number one. and they got him. matt? >> all right, andrea mitchell, thank you very much. donald rumsfeld was the secretary of defense of the united states twice from 1975 to 1977 and then again from 2001 until 2006. secretary rumsfeld, good to see you. good morning. >> thank you very much. >> thifirst of all, how did you receive the news? >> well, my staff called and i turned on the television and was able to see the good news and was impressed by the spontaneous demonstrations we have seen

across the united states. there is clearly an understanding that this is an important event. >> let me ask you about where he was found. he was found not in a cave along the border between pakistan and afghanistan. he was found in a rather up scale neighborhood in a town about 35 miles from islamabad. does that surprise you? >> obviously the conventional thinking was that he was in the federally administered tribal areas in pakistan, not in the urban areas near the capitol. this is a man who called the united states a paper tiger and assumed that the united states would do nothing, that we would continue to not really react. he's a person that urged muslims to kill americans. and so the fact that he's been killed and is no longer a factor is an important one. this is an intelligence problem

from the beginning, of course. we have always had the ability to kill or capture. we needed the intelligence. we had been fortunate that the intelligence was forthcoming. it may well have been partly a result of some of the -- interviews that took place in guantanamo bay, cuba. >> we're hearing a lot, secretary rumsfeld, this morning -- questions about how the pakistanisle could not have known he was here. local police officers who had to look at this compound and see it as being very different from the surrounding buildings. do you worry that while we are calling pakistan an ally in the war of terror that they did not do their best in turning over information on the location of bin laden? >> i think it's fair to ask those questions and pursue the questions. we need to know the answers to those types of things. that is possible. it is also possible that hindsight is 20/20.

>> do you think now that -- what type of a blow does this deal to al qaeda -- obviously he was the founder of al qaeda. he was the leader but we also know that al qaeda has become almost a catchphrase for many types of terror organizations now. will there be other fringe groups to simplile fill the void? >> well, we have had instances where in a given region we have killed or captured the head of al qaeda and within a matter of hours someone took his place. i think we have to assume that this isn't the end of radical islamists trying to kill americans. there are others out there. he will be replaced. and the key is the fact that the bush administration and the obama administration have put pressure on the terrorists. that's what resulted in the intelligence and the information that led to the killing of osama bin laden and over time will

lead to the killing of whoever succeeds him. >> do you worry about an uptick in violence now in this country or against western interests around the world as a result of the killing of osama bin laden? >> i think we have to be alert to that possibility. there has been intelligence that suggested if osama bin laden were ever captured or killed that there would be a violent attack on america or europe in one way or another. i think it's important that our intelligence organization and military around the world are very attentive during this period. >> and finally, let me ask you to end on a comment about the u.s. military, the special forces in particular. you have obviously intimate knowledge of their workings from your time as secretary of defense. what would you say about the conducting of this operation and the success of it? >> it certainly is an

intelligence success. we had to have that information. but the young men and women in our special forces and our navy seals are amazing. they do an absolutely superb job. and they are courageous, patriotic, dedicated and determined. this is an important victory for them. ic congratulate them to be sure. >> former secretary of defense donald rumsfeld. mr. secretary, i thank you for spending time with us this morning. >> thank you so much. >> we're going to have much more ahead on aonrom y nd morning from ground zero and studio 1a right after these messages. at the end of the day, you have to keep -- and i think this came with the babies as well. you know, you feel a deeper love. it made me step back and start questioning things and looking at life in a different way. you know, am i doing my best? am i being the best person? am i loving in the right way? am i being loved in the right way? over the years i say i have been working on this album for two years but seriously since the first time i fell in love when i was 13. >> what have you learned? >> that you still have questions. there is so much to learn and that's why the question mark. love is the answer but the question, too. i think we have to challenge ourselves to be better. >> you travel through life and say you have learned so much about yourself. you have a wonderful relationship, kids you adore and "american idol," too. when you were first approached did you have second thoughts about doing the show? >> yeah, i did.

when they first approached me i was like, this is not what i want. this is something that wasn't in my career plan. you know? >> why did you take it? >> because at the end of the day i'm the type of person who follows her gut. i love the show. i really was a huge fan of it. i had been kind of, like, judging from my bedroom for years. and then i thought about it and i talked with marc about it and we decided it might be a good thing for us, for the babies to be in one place for once. >> now that you have done it, some people criticize you and steven tyler saying, oh, they're not tough enough. >> why do i have to be tough on them? i think you have to be yourself. people trying to hold us to a standard of something that was before. but the truth is everybody was being themselves. that's all we are doing, too, being ourselves. >> you feel comfortable. when a kid leaves you get upset. >> i do. it's sad to see them go.

after 3:00 a.m. with no sign of the hat. the couple looks serene leaving by helicopter somewhere in the uk. no tropical honeymoon yet. they decided to wait. and the future king is expected back to work in the air force as early as tomorrow. the palace released the official photos. >> there is a lot of energy in the photos. we all knew we needed to get on and do it. >> reporter: among other lasting impressions -- the frowning flower girl. yes, an internet sensation at 3 years old. and then there's pippa, prompting a global stir with a facebook page dedicated to, let's say her appearance from behind. some say, how about pippa and harry? >> he's a gentleman that prefers blonds.

things we do well areal royal weddings and tea. >> ben, you said friday you believed this was a turning point in the monarchy. tell me a little bit about what you meant by that. do you stille feel that way? >> i do. i think there is a wave of support for the young royals. i think that will affect the royal family in general. i think we are still basking in the feel-good factor and i think it will be a turning point for the royal family. there are still a lobby of anti-anti- monarchists here. but hopefully it will quiet them. >> a lot of people felt it was pomp and pageantry, it came and went and nothing really changes. >> i think this has changed everything actually. we have been stuck in a horrible recession in the uk. everyone's been gloomy.

it gave people hope. >> hope is a good thing. one of my favorite images was after the fact when the royal couple were driving around in the aston-martin looking cool with the balloons and cans in the back. ben, was that their way of interjecting their own personality into the wedding to remind people, hey, we're just a young, kind of hip couple? >> i very much think that was their signature. during the reception, one of the points where william asked everyone to raise their glasses to mrs. wales. that's also testament to the fact that they want to be a low key couple. that was the image of the wedding really, driving around in an aston-martin. >> were you surprised they postponed the honeymoon. you say the reason was because of the speculation of where they were going. >> i'm sure that was the case.

the problem with the day and the build-up to the day is it was just so wonderful. it gave people almost too much and the idea that everyone would now step away was just never going to happen. i think they apparently decided weeks ago to postpone the honeymoon and go somewhere later on this month. an island in the indian ocean apparently where they will stay in $4,000 a night suites and have total intimacy which is what they need. >> in the meantime, ben, everybody is talking about pippa, what a gorgeous woman she is. the attention is focused on her. will we hear more about her in the weeks and months ahead, do you think? >> i think so. the magazine "tattler" here has the most eligible woman in england. that might have left our shores. she's become a bit of a worldwide phenomenon. >> i think we'll be hearing lots

11, 2001, that nearly 3,000 people were killed in what was and is the worst attack on u.s. soil by terrorists in history. al roker, natalie morales are up in studio 1a about 30 or 40 blocks from me. folks, it's an interesting scene here. i just want to describe it. we have a lot of people gathered for the morning commute here. we have probably as many members of the media here as we do lookere lookers lookers-on and people going to work. some people gathered to celebrate the fact that osama bin laden is dead. others are stopping to share memories of loved ones they lost during the terror attacks. >> coming up in this half hour, matt, the entire world is reacting to the news this morning. the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks was killed and it holds special meaning for the families of those who lost loved ones that day. we'll talk to one family about

latest on this. >> reporter: good morning. it started with a guantanamo detainee who identified two couriers who worked for osama bin laden. over months the cia followed the couriers and tracked them to a massive north of islamabad. it was yesterday where u.s. navy seals attacked the compound, about two dozen of them and in a fierce 40-minute firefight killed osama bin laden whose body was buried at sea, but not before intelligence analysts determined it was bin laden by comparing the body to detailed photos of osama bin laden and better identification through dna testing is expected later today. >> jim miklaszewski, thanks. president obama's announcement last night of bin laden's death capped a weekend of high stakes decision-making. nbc's chief white house correspondent chuck todd has the story.

this morning. the word ricocheting around the world that the man who really is the founder of al qaeda and the face of evil in the modern world was in fact killed, taken off the battlefield and already buried at sea. as we watch this scene, chuck todd, our chief white house correspondent standing by. chuck, i know details are coming out about the operation. >> we're getting more and more. you're not going to hear that from the president in these remarks but this is the first opportunity the president will have to react to what americans, how americans have been reacting as we were reporting last night and this morning, right outside the white house where the president was, we assume, maybe trying to catch an hour or two of sleep. thousands of folks gathered to cheer the capture and kill of osama bin laden and the reactions we've seen this morning at ground zero and other places around the country. this is the president's first opportunity to address the

american families who six decades ago gave our nation one of their own, private first class henry svala and private first class anthony anoano. they did not grow old. these two soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice when they were just 19 and 21 years old. age did not weary them. in the hearts of their families they remain forever young. loving sons, protective brothers, hometown kids who stood tall in america's hometown. >> you heard the president say this is a good day for america in his remarks at the top of this ceremony which, again, is designed to give the medal of honor to two veterans who sadly did not come home to receive the medal, both of them lost on the field of battle in korea. and in both cases it has taken

people to fight to have the investigation completed resulting in this ceremony today. general barry mccaffrey is with us, decorated combat veteran and, general, i'm sitting here looking at the recipients of the medal of honor in the front row. what will the american public take away when we learn all the details there are to learn about this special forces raid that resulted in the death of bin laden, do you think? >> well, brian, among other things, it's a great reassurance to recognize that we've got this immense battle force, 100,000 troops on the ground in afghanistan, and still 50,000 or so in iraq. they've suffered 48,000 killed and wounded and here we have this elite commando group, the group that includes a navy s.e.a.l.s out of s.e.a.l. team

six that can pull out an operation hundreds of miles from their launch point with such professionalism in pitch blackness to avenge, and i use that word deliberately, the murder of 3,000 innocent americans. it's a point of grade great pride for all of us. >> thank you. and standing by our chief white house correspondent chuck todd. and, chuck, you hear already in the public discourse, well, what does this mean, then, for the war in afghanistan? a lot of americans, because of the very personalization, the demonization of the war around bin laden at the outset, a lot of americans now wonder what kind of policy discussions are going to go on in that building behind you. >> reporter: in the short term not a lot. we heard from secretary clinton this morning, almost restating the case for why we're in afghanistan and she was almost pleading with folks that may have found themselves sympathizing in afghanistan for

work. san jose city manager will release her budget today and it's expected to reiterate what many workers found out last week, there will be cuts. about 600 city workers have been told they will lose their jobs or be demoted. 400 positions across all departments need to be elimin e eliminated to balance the budget, along with 220 other jobs that were saved through one-time funding last year. the city asked all unions to take a 10% wage concessions, about a third of theon have agreed, including police and firefighters.

happened to your facebook account? >> well, they pretty much, like, took it without permission and wrote a whole bunch of stuff on it that i didn't know about until later. and then it was horrible. >> john, you were the first, as i understand, of the three of you to know about it because it was leslileslie's older sister let you know about that? >> her big sister from big brothers and sisters called me when i was on the way home. so i knew what the problem was. i gave her the password and i had her change the password and deactivate the account until i could get into it. >> you made sure leslie didn't see the stuff that was posted. >> right. >> how would you describe in terms of letting people understand how horrible this was what was on this account? >> it was pretty disgusting. they were using the instant

message system posing as leslie, asking classmates to have sex with her. a lot of sexual content on there. turned out she posted on tara's wall, mommy, can i have condoms for my birthday this year? >> tara, you didn't waste much time in wanting redress. you went to the police station and filed a report. >> exactly. >> what do you want done to the girls? and you know who they are? >> correct. >> an 11-year-old and a 12-year-old you go to school with? >> yes. >> what do you want to have done? >> i want them to pay for the crimes they committed. what i would really like is the public apology in front of the whole school why they did this, why they embarrassed my daughter, why did they use other people -- adults, kids -- and humiliate her and us. we're still doing damage control

on what they did. they were contacting employees, contacting friends and family members. >> of your family? >> yes. >> leslie, how do you make sense of this? did you know these girls well? >> yes. i used to be friends with them and i trusted them. then they just turned around and did that to me. >> why would anyone do this? can you make sense of this? >> they were jealous of me and i wouldn't talk to them. >> so now with this situation they could face time and juvenile detention if they are found guilty. >> correct. 30 days juvenile detention plus so many hours community service. >> on one hand you're shocked with an 11-year-old and a 12-year-old accused of doing such a thing and also how they would have access to this material you are describing. what do you want to say to other

>> it was still surprising and jarring. i immediately got up. it was 4:00 in the morning. i'm scrambling for the tv. i'm out of it. they are replaying the events from the night before where all the crowds gathered in washington, d.c., and down at ground zero and times square. >> again, the power of the social media. >> i was thinking it happened around 11:00 or 11:30 last night. that's when people started hearing about it. a lot of these people, number one, were probably young kids when 9/11 happened, as we are seeing here. because it happened ten years ago. >> those are college students. they are 18, 19, 20, 21. it's been ten years. >> what did you think when you saw these scenes? >> i didn't know until this morning either. i got in the car and christine told me. i was like, oh, my gosh. then all i wanted was details. i think there is a healthy desire for evidence at this point. a lot of people are saying how are we going to know for sure and will there be a picture released?

they are saying some time today they hope to release something. >> what happened are the navy s.e.a.l.s rushed into this compound. this is just outside islamabad outside pakistan. it's a huge place. they say it's eight times bigger than any other structure there. it really stood out. 12-foot high walls and barbed wire on top. >> a million dollars it has taken to build it. two men that didn't have any financial backing of their own built this thing. it was obviously for a high-valued person. >> think about how long they were tracking this courier going back and forth. back and forth. >> they knew since last august this might be where he was. >> i can't imagine what was going through them at that moment when they went rushing in. he was shot in the head and his son was killed, as well. a couple of other people. no americans were. >> no one had been used as a

is that you got the big daddy sort of, but there are so many groups out there? >> we are hearing he hasn't been the leader of al qaeda for quite a while. this will make him more of a martyr. they're saying that's perhaps why they buried him at sea. >> they don't want a grave site where people can go. that will be interesting. people do want evidence. to say he was shot and put out to sea, and i'm sure they've taken care of everything with pictures and dna or who knows what. >> like everyone, you think back to where we were on that fateful day. i was at home. the two planes flew right over our house because we are on that direct path to downtown. my assistant at the time, beautiful, beautiful woman was eight months pregnant with her first child. her husband had been in the towers in 1993 when the first bombing happened. had actually saved some people's lives.

he worked for canter fitzgerald and was killed in the first tower. she was already at my office. when you go through something like that so personally it gives it a face. her husband was the dearest. i don't want to name names but we adored him. i would invite him every time i performed because i said if he were in the audience everybody would laugh. he had the most amazing laugh and it was contagious. everybody laughed when he did. you think about how much laughter went out of the world that day. we are going to have a gentleman who works for us here. >> chris is coming on here. >> chris works with all the stuff i can't do. all the computers and things. he is a doll and he lost his sister who worked for cantor fitzgerald. >> we are going to try to have fun, too. because life goes on. >> jennifer lopez came this morning to our studios. we had a chance to talk to her. she's got this sexy hot video. >> she wasn't thrilled about being up early.

laden. >> to talk about it emotionally first, i think this was an amazing moment for the country. i was watching outside the white house last night. so many young people who were crowding outside the white house cheering and waving american flags. i thought back to 9/11 seeing my colleagues who ran out of the white house because there was a real fear there was another attack coming against the white house. you look at the faces of these young people and in times square and ground zero. these are young people who were probably 10 or 12 years old on 9/11. this was the stuff of actual nightmares for them because the country had been so traumatized. military officials, national security officials talking about osama bin laden as an iconic figure of terror. he was all of that. you talk about celebration, i think there is that going on throughout the country. >> is it going to fuel, feed the fuel of the fire of hatred so many feel for us already?

>> it's hard to know. there is an important line. i spoke to somebody this morning about the difference between gloating and celebration. there is going to be celebration. you heard a note of caution from administration officials. secretary of state talking about the al qaeda network still being out there, being a terror syndicate that requires vigilance on the part of the government. it's hard for the country to remain in a perpetual state of war, but that's what happened. particularly in suit of al qaeda operatives and bin laden, that's where the government is, constantly on a war footing. we don't know the ramifications. leon panetta warned there will be those terrorists who try to avenge bin laden. he will be a martyr to some. one thing is for sure. look at the middle east right now. young people are taking to the streets not so they can raise up bin laden and what he stands for. bin laden stands for a dark alley of death.

now he is gone. what is filling the world is great hope for democracy. improvements in their own lives. it's something much more powerful and positive sweeping that part of the world. >> david, thank you so much. >> sure. >> almost everybody in this country knows somebody whose life was cut short by the attacks of 9/11. >> our own staff member chris bratton knows only too well what it's like to have an empty chair at the dinner table. his younger sister michelle was just 23 years old at the time was tragedy killed in the world trade center. he is here along with his parents, bill and mary via skype. thank you for joining us. an incredibly sad day just to be reminded once again. you don't have to be reminded, i'm sure, after almost ten years. what was your first thought when you heard today? >> my mother came in last night and told me they got obama, they shot and killed him -- osama, i'm sorry.

originally, i was happy he's captured or dead now. looking at the celebrations and everything you saw on the news, equally concerned that we are just going to aggravate the new powers-to-be. he's gone but al qaeda's not. >> someone has already stepped in and taken his place. >> right. >> bill and mary, how did this news strike you two? >> similarly, i would say. i do think this part had to happen. we've been playing prevent defense for nine some odd years. this is one where we get to play offense and it executed well. nobody got hurt and i think god was on our side doing the just and right thing.
