this is today in the east bay. well, good morning, everyone. i'm scot scot. it is 4:30. was it warm enough for you yesterday? let's check the forecast with chris tina loren. >> good morning to you. it's going to be a warm day. high pressure is set up. it's shifted to the east. for us, we are going to drop by a few degrees. temperatures are going to be milder than yesterday. tomorrow, a significant cooldown. it should be back as of this afternoon. that's what we are looking for in the weather forecast. here are the temperatures looking comfortable in san francisco. 81 degrees in santa cruz. >> here in the east bay, we are looking at the maz as well. a lighter volume of traffic. a lot of folks recovering from the traffic.

that's the good news. the unpleasant trinow, southbound 880 into oakland and san leandro. a couple lanes blocked. there's clean up work going on. we will follow this. no major slowing and late traffic. >> new this morning, nurses at oakland's children's hospital walking off the job and picketing for health care benefits. chris ty smith is live. >> good morning, scott. this is going to be a long one. starts in a couple hours and is expected to run for five days. the nurses involved say they are upset with the hospital's plan to reduce their covered health care insurance. so 800 of them say they plan to walk off the job about 7:00 this morning because the proposal will cost nurses $4,000 more per

year to use health care for their family at the hospital. the hospital is proposed to change when the contract expired last may with the union. there was a three-day strike back in october. i got off the phone with a hospital spokesperson saying they are offering three options here. an employer paid kaiser hmo, employer paid ppo or a ppo with cost sharing that costs them 15% more than they are used to paying. basically, what's behind this is costs are going way up and they are facing tough economic times like everyone else. they tell me they have hired replacement nurses and non-striking staff will fill in as well. again, this is expected to start at 7:00 this morning. i also asked the spokesperson if it's going to be business as usual and she said pretty much everything will go on as planned

except a couple elected procedures will have to be rescheduled. that spokesperson is going to be out here to talk to us. >> thank you much. 4:33 now. this morning another east bay police officer is under arrest in connection with a drug ring. this linked to well known private investigator christopher butler. lewis lombardi is facing a number of charges including aiding and abeding in conspiracy of grant theft. he appeared in an nbc exclusive tape. it's a sting with butler. he poses as a cheating boyfriend. this was a fake, a publicity stunt staged by his pr firm. the police officers are reeling. >> this chief, i'm proud of the

work our officers do on a daily basis and the actions of one should not be a reflection of the integrity of the outstanding men and women of our department. charges of stealing drugs out of evidence. a meth bust related to a drug sting. harris says operation red reach resulted in 35 arrests, the siezure of more than 135 pounds of meth and $86,000 in cash. we are told joseph is among those arrested in contra kos ta county. an official with the california department of justice says gangs are their main focus. >> a number of highly financed, well organized gangs are in

california and perpetrating serious and violent crimes against people of the state. >> operation red reach seized six vehicles including two assault rifles. school officials and parents are outraged over the contents in a child's backpack. they spotted a gun. the student had no idea he was carrying the gun and did not plan to use it. police called immediately. in a note sent home, the principal writes we are not taking this lightly. it's not reflective of the culture we have developed. in oakland, a slow start for the defense in the bailey murder trial. a key witness refused to testify citing his defense. richard lewis is serving a life

sentence. the attorney claims lewis, not his client was the get away driver. after bailey was shot back in 2007. the trial is under way in the face against josh fatale and james bower after hiking over into iraq in 2009. the second session of the trial is set to begin may 11th. days after u.s. forces killed osama bin laden, no photographs of the corpse will be shown. presenting the photos is not in the best interest of national

security. reaction has been mixed. some disagree. people in the bay area tend to agree. harry's sister betty was a flight attendant in a plane that crashed into the twin towers. >> we don't have a final picture of betty. i'm sure a lot of other family members don't have pictures of their loved ones as well during their final moments. >> the president will lay a wreath at ground zero and meet privately with family members. we have a look inside osama bin laden's secret hide out. this is right after the deadly fire fight. it's been ransacked. every day, items like clothes, medicine and shoes, mixed in with the bloody aftermath. one man allowed people on his roof for a better look.

it's a quiet neighborhood. it's been buzzing since sunday. without bin lauden, the most famous resident is the man who twittered about the firing. he says he moved here to escape violence. many people in the town say they don't believe bin lauden was in that neighborhood house. he had other family members living on the first floor. at least six children are in protective custody. 12 other adults urnds arrest. reportedly, bin lauden left a will for his wives and children. in the will, bin lauden orders his wives not to remarry and asks his sons not to join al qaeda. the document does not give a reason. he apologizes to the family for not spending more time with

officials arrested him in the mountains. bin laden wasn't in the mountains. one group tracking him had it right, ucla students in a research project where they used theories and numbers applied to birds. their theory he was in a house with electricity and high fences was try. there was a chance he was hiding out in a city less than 300 kilometers from. >> when i found out it was pretty darn close, not entirely accurate, we weren't on the dime, but, again, just to realize that things you do in the classroom can be applied to real-life settings. that was a prize in itself. >> it's entirely possible the u.s. offered $25 million bounty

day. pit bulls get a bad rap. a pit bull hero is welcome this morning. the pit bull and their owner displayed their skin graph grafts. she saved her family from the flames last october shielding the steamed daughter with her body. diamond was given the 29th dog hero award. >> when the firefighters finally got to sierra, what they discovered was diamond lying on top of her and shielding her from the flames. but diamond was getting burned. diamond did not move. >> diamond's owners say the story still does not have a happy ending. they have not been able to find a landlord willing to rent to them. it's silly because she's so gentle, she's ad aifrof cats.ai >>s.coming up, will he confess?
