morning. this is not the coolest point of the day. a little more cooling for the next couple hours. the big news is the warm weather. the records we broke yesterday are out of here for the weekend. on shore flow resumes. i'll break down the entire forecast. we have more fun in the morning. for now, let's get you to work on time with mike. >> good morning. we are looking to the maze and a nice easy drive. it's a fun drive if you consider commuting a nice drive. we have an unpleasantry in the east bay. there's a disabled vehicle blocking a lane. it's not affecting the main commute. we'll get a look at the commute coming up.

back to you in pleasanton. thank you. it's cinco de mayo. make sure you have a safe way to get home before you drink that margarita. damian trujillo is live in san jose with how officers are trying to keep the road safe. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. i'm told, i don't know this firsthand but i'm told there's nothing more sobering than spending the night in county jail. police agencies say this is exactly where they will bring you if you decide to drink and drive this holiday weekend. here in santa clara county, 13 agencies are partnering in what they call avoid the 13. they are looking for everything from swerving in and out of lanes, wider turns, failing to go on a green light. they are signs the driver might not be fit to get behind a wheel. there's no escaping. the added patrols are on the streets and unincorporated areas. it's funded by state and

national funds. don't think layoffs will keep officers away this year. if you are hosting a party, you might be liable if a guest is dri drinking, then gets in an accident. here in san jose, there is worry because this could be a four-day holiday weekend. cinco de mayo is today, on a thursday. there might be drinking thursday, friday, saturday and sunday. aside from the dui concerns, there's concerns they will lead to residual crime. san jose doubled their homicide rate from last year. cinco de mayo is not being singled out here. they have these crack downs on most every holiday. this is one that happens to fall on thursday. you have four days of partying ahead of you. i'm damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >> you know why? everyone is a garcia today a

little bit. we want to check in with nbc bay area's marla tellez. she's in the news room with more on how cinco de mayo could lead to security concerns. >> that's right. it's happening deep in the south bay. the time is 5:04. good morning to you. students and teachers are expected to be business as usual in morgan hill this morning. police say they are not going to take chances. they are setting up patrols. one year ago today, four students wearing american flag t-shirts on cinco de mayo out of fear it would start fights. the story made national headlines. three of the four boys' families sued. many students on campus feel nothing will happen this year. >> there's no conflict anymore. >> since last year's incident, a

group called voices has organized campus events promoting unity. this morning we will find out if the man charged with the deaths of four women can represent himself in court. he's suspected of killing two young women, one from oakland, the other from fairfield back in the late 1970s. he's accused in the deaths of two yuba county women in the 1990s. the 77-year-old has yet to enter a plea. marin county's district attorney will decide whether to seek the death penalty once the attorney issue is resolved. the body of a santa rosa man is back in the area this morning. his body was flown into sfo yesterday. a fleet of military veterans provided an escort to santa rosa. he was killed last month when an afghan pilot fired.

he was working in the country as contractor. he'll be laid to rest saturday. hundreds of registered nurses are set to protest over the cost of their health care. christie smith is live with more on this story. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. you know, when this happens, it's going to be quite a sight. 800 nurses walking the picket line for five days. comes down to a couple things. first of all, contract talks stalled and nurses saying the hospital isn't covering their health care expenses the way they used to. at least that's the proposal. it amounts to about $4,000 and a proposed decrease in employer covered expenses. the hospital proposed to change in their health care plan after the contract with the nurses union expired. that was last may. in october, that prompted a three-day walk out. i spoke with a spokesperson by phone. they are offering three other

options, including a hospital paid hmo for the nurses. the hospital is going through what everyone is going through, that's tough economic times. short term, they have hired replacement workers so everything will go on as planned in terms of health care services here. some elective procedures may be delayed. the nurses are expected to start walking on the picket line at 7:00 this morning. live in oakland, christie smith, today in the bay. >> thank you very much. time is 5:07 now. it was down right hot yesterday. time to get your forecast for this cinco de mayo. good morning. >> good morning to you, marla. it's nice when you get just a hint of summer and it doesn't stay for long. that's what we experienced yesterday. today, cooler, staying warm. by this weekend, down right beautiful temperatures just in time for mom's day.

let's get to the forecast. the headlines show you it's a mild start. i do not need a jacket this morning. it's warm, in fact, in certain spots across the bay area. forget about the jacket in san francisco. as we head throughout the day, temperatures are going to drop off by a few degrees. tomorrow, cooler. the fog returns as on shore flow resumes. the marine layer is going to push inland. tomorrow is certainly going to be the case. more cloud cover tomorrow. sunny conditions today. 4:00 p.m. the highs in the middle 80s inland. closer to the upper 70s at the coast. the seven day outlook is coming up in a moment. we are out here live in pleasanton this morning at main street and division. we are going to have a lot of fun out here this morning, including a marching band. mike.

>> it's still early for a lot of folks, but you have to get that early start. an accident reported. southbound 688, king road. watch for slowing. so far, no lanes reported blocked. more cars off to the shoulder with no injuries. lower bay shore doing nicely. eastbound 84, the dumbarton bridge. it will clear up by 6:00. north, the san mateo bridge looks all right. the headlights coming you have 101. the bay bridge, the travel times are moving nicely as well. close to 60 miles per hour for all the feeder roads. not a problem coming off the carquinez bridge. caster valley, a smooth flow here. on average a 14-minute drive out of altamont pass. we're going back to laura on the

good morning, welcome back. it is 5:21. a live look at hp pavilion, the home of the san jose sharks. they are celebrating this morning they beat the red wings, 4-3. the state's money problems could limit where you enjoy mother nature. governor jerry brown is proposing closing a number of state parks to save $22 million for next year's budget. two sights are likely to be included on the list because neither makes much money. it's the state recreation area and the park. to keep the parks open, the association is holding a public

meeting one week from today on may 12th to get public feedback. that meeting is held at the public library at 7:00. time to get a check on the roads. any problems out there yet? >> things are going bump up in the east bay. we start in livermore in the altamont pass. pleasanton is where christina and bob are this morning. in a half hour, the speeds will dip on westbound 580. westbound highway 4, 72 will dip down over 20 minutes. we'll see it come down into the 40s and 20s. it's a dramatic change. eastbound, the construction has a full closure from loveridge to somersville. it's going on until the 20th, i believe. it will be opened by 5:30.

no major issues. it's opposite the main commute. a vehicle was blocking the left lane toward 680. 680 moves slowly off the bridge. if you are using the parks, check the website to get the latest on that. we are looking at the carquinez bridge through hercules. we'll follow that and i'll let you know the latest. just an 18 minute drive off the bridge, across the bay to the bay bridge. a look at the toll plaza. clear view, you can see the east shore freeway with clouds hanging out. fog not an issue. clearly, heat is going to be a factor. coming up northbound with the headlights, this the 880, the nimitz freeway. no slowing around the san mateo bridge. the volume is light in the south bay.

back to you. >> thanks, mike. the trial of the berkeley hikers held captive in iran is on the way. josh fatale and shane bower are set to be back in an iranian courtroom. they hiked over the country's line. she was released on humanitarian grounds after concerns for her health. you can watch the candidates running to be san francisco's next mayor battle it out in a debate. the university of san francisco is hosting the mayoral forum. restoring trust with the government is the theme. it's held at the universities conference center. it begins at 6:00 and it is free. >> you can see a spike in your utility bill if you don't use the extra power.

pg&e wants to increase rates and change the way customers are charged. under the plan, those who use less electricity would pay more. pg&e says it wants to make it fair for everybody by creating an across the board fee. the public utilities commission is going to decide if they can change the rate structure later this month. >> an ipad app that was supposed to save the industry doesn't save money. does that mean it's a failure? >> i don't know about a failure. the daily, it looks great and is fun to read. the parent company says -- this is the same company that owns my space and wall street journal says the app lost $10 million over the quarter. yes, the very first quarter for the daily -- we should wait maybe a year before drawing conclusions about how successful

it is. 800 people subscribe to the daily. it's twice the size of a newspaper. sony updated the hack attack. the company claims a group called anonymous may be behind the hack that knocked the play station network offline and exposed millions of people's personal information. a confederation of internet activists that skewer companies they are unhappy with. they are protesting the church of scientology. they attacked sony's website to protest the lawsuit against a hacker that had nothing to do against the attack. playing detective, just a personal observation -- it's not their m.o. they don't steal credit card information, general. they play a lot of games. it seems unlikely they would

it's a cool start to the day. i want to check in with christina loren. >> i think they are following you. >> i think i'm distracted this morning. all these officers in uniform and it's already warm out here. they are showing up in droves. i never felt this safe. temperature wise, we are talking about the upper 70s at the coast. inland, the mid-80s. high pressure is the reason why. it's retreated to the east a little bit, just enough for the on show flow. we are going to feel the impacts of the on shore flow. no marine layer. it will be back tomorrow. cloudy for the first part of tomorrow. if you are looking for the sun, you'll want to get out early today. throughout the afternoon, it will warm up. if you have the outdoor plans to take care of and you don't want to get too hot, do it this morning. maybe you have to get to work. >> good morning. actually, i see the sun a lot, i

watch the tv cameras with the beautiful shots of our traffic. the map shows the slow down is potential. l street westbound. that starts to slow down in the next few minutes. eastbound is where the construction is. it's from loveridge. no problems here for the feeders toward the bay bridge. easy flow now. it's kicking off in the east bay now. back to you, laura. they are cleaning the streets, closing them up because we have exciting things coming up. we'll get to that in a bit. i want to touch on this morning's top story where hundreds of nurses are scheduled to walk out of work from oakland's hospital. i want to check in with christie smith. she's got the latest for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. the nurses are starting to show

up. the strike officially starts at 7:00. we are talking with some of the nurses. what people need to know is that under this proposal that the hospital is offering, it would make it tough for their own families to get care at the hospital that they work at. that's what's driving them out to the picket line. what amounts to $4,000 they say in reduced employer covered health care. the nurses say the walk out could include up to 800 registered nurses hitting the picket line. the contract with the hospital and the nurse's union expired last may. they say it forced a quick three-day walk out. now, five days. they don't want to, but they have to. >> it's going to make it expensive for us to bring our own children to children's. the health plan they are cutting allows the nurse her choice of doctor and allows her to bring her kids to this hospital.

we give great care and should be able to give it to our own kids. >> reporter: i just got off the phone with the hospital spokesperson and they say the hospital is facing the same economic trouble's everyone is. they are offering an employer cade kaiser hmo. they have hired staff to fill in. it will be business as usual for those who need care. elective procedures will be postponed they say. they are telling me the good news is that they have heard talks will continue after the strike is concluded. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, today in the bay. >> thank you much. marla tellez is in the news room with a look at the stories making news headlines including a visit by president obama to ground zero. >> that is happening later.

good morning to you at home. president obama will visit ground zero later today for a replaying ceremony days after osama bin laden was killed in pakistan. he'll meet privately with some of the families who lost loved ones in the september 11th attacks. the former presidents bill clinton and george w. bush were invited but both declined siting scheduling conflicts and the desire to stay out of the spotlight. police are searching for the suspect in a fatal stabbing in east san jose. police responded near cunningham park. he died after being taken to the hospital. investigators have not released the suspects description or motive for the crime. those in san francisco are hoping to get their belongings

after watching their home go up in flames. the fast moving fire ripped through the park hotel on folsom near sixth street. the hotel may be destroyed all together. people who live there thought the evacuation was a drill. >> as i was leaving the building, i heard other tenants yelling it's real, it's real. bang bang bang, it's real. >> all my clothes, everything. my computer. all my tools. >> the fire damaged four buildings before crews put out the flames. one firefighter was taken to the hospital for smoke inhilation. people who live in the hotel think it started with a barbecue. seven men will be in court charged with the murder of a german tourist visiting san francisco. the woman was in the city celebrating her 50th birthday when she got caught in a gun

battle between two gangs. after a long investigation, police gathered enough evidence to charge four men with her murder. three others will face accessory charges. they are still looking for an eighth suspect. another police officer in trouble with the law connected to the alleged dirty cop scandal. a san ramon officer is accused of aiding and abetting conspiracy and grand theft. they were suspicious of him after he appeared in an nbc bay area news exclusive in march. in the video, he's part of an undercover infidelity scream. they allegedly sold drugs from police lockers. people across the bay area will be celebrating cinco de mayo. police agencies are warning people because they are going to be watching.

damian trujillo is live at the county jail in san jose where you could end up, if you drink and drive. good morning, damian. >> reporter: good morning, marla. these are more than words. extra patrols are out in the streets, highways and roads across the bay area. this is where they will not hesitate to bring you at the jail in san jose. they are calling the program avoid the 13. for the 13 police agencies taking part in the south bay. they are looking for drivers who don't go on a green light, swerving drivers and those driving below the speed limit. they are indicators a driver might be impaired. it's not just for tonight. the entire weekend is saturated with men and women in blue, even during the difficult times. the extra and overtime patrols with state and federal grants.

they canceled the official cinco de mayo parade. the officers know bars and restaurants are offering drinks and prices off this cinco de mayo weekend. they want to make sure no one breaks the law. i have seen several people come out of the county jail in the last hour alone. it's the walk of shame. no one is proud to be walking out of jail. a lady said she was embarrassed because she was in there for a drinking violation. i have been in the drunk tank as a reporter. it's dark, smelly and it's not comfortable at all. if you have to spend a couple nights there, you don't know who you might end up bunking up with. stay at home if you are going to drink. get a designated driver or a cab. live at the main jail, i'm damian trujillo, today in the bay. >> thank you, great advice. 5:38 now.
