may around the bay continues this morning. 20 cities in 20 days. this morning, we are waking up in pleasanton. pleasanton is waking up with us. good morning to you. i'm laura garcia-cannon. so happy to have you on board. a road trip across the area to show you the great unique things about the area we all love. christina loren joins me live along with the members of the amador marching band. she's already get a french horn. >> yeah, but i don't know how to hold it. right now, girls, tell me, are you cold this morning?

smoothly. a nice drive toward the maze. we get a look with the chopper to see if they are there. there's a crowd building here through livermore and the dublin interchange. back to laura, right now. >> thank you very mch. we are covering the days news and one big story we are following are hundreds of thurss about ready to strike. we'll check in with christie smith with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. hundreds of nurses are expected to leave the hospital, hit the picket line for five long days. i spoke with a couple nurses who got here early. one of them is under the new proposed health care plan offered by the hospital, it would be tough for the nurses to bring their own children in for care. they said they had to take action. this is the second strike for the nurses. the first was three days back in

opt after a contract between the hospital and the nurses union expired in may and talks went nowhere. one of the big disagreements, health care cuts mean they chip in $4,000 more than they do now. they are tough economic times and a lot of people aren't working. >> to recruit and retain nurses at a hospital in the bay area, there's a standard of compensation that nurses get. the contract offer that the employer has on the table is way below that standard in many areas. we are willing to sacrifice some because we are -- we love what we do. but, we aren't willing to put the hospital in a position to prevent it from bringing in new, young nurses. >> reporter: i talked with a hospital spokesperson by phone who said the proposal is actually for the hospital's surviv survival. they are offering three new

health care options. for the next five days, non-striking workers and replacement workers will fill in. service will continue as usual. but some elective procedures will have to be rescheduled. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, today in the bay. >> people shouldn't be nervous they can't get their service. thank you very much. marla tellez has a look at the rest of the days news for us. holding down the fort, we appreciate it. something about a suspected serial killer. >> we should find out if a man charged with the deaths of four women can represent himself in court. joseph is suspected of killing two young women, one from oakland, the other from fairfield, back in the late 1970s. he's accused in the deaths of two yuba county women in the '90s. the 77-year-old has yet to enter

a plea. he'll decide whether to seek the death penalty once the attorney issue is resolved. this morning, the u.s. says it is standing by ally pakistan. there are questions about whether the leaders knew osama bin laden lived in their country. today, secretary of state, hillary clinton said it's not an easy relationship between the u.s. and pakistan but it is a productive one for both countries. meanwhile, president obama will visit ground zero for the first time in his presidency today. the event will be somber. he'll lay a wreath in memory of the september 11th victims and meet with victim's family members. it comes four days after bin laden was killed. warm weather and sunny skies, a great combination for people celebrating cinco de mayo. it is the fifth of may today. agencies across the bay area want to make sure you party

safely. damian trujillo is live at the county jail with great advice. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla. if you decide to drink and drive this cinco de mayo weekend, the folks behind me say you are more than welcome to spend the weekend with them. they have vacancy all the time. this is no joke here in the south bay. they are calling it avoid the 13. police are adding patrols all over the south bay. it's because of the 13 agencies participating in the program. that covers every corner of the south bay. they are looking for drivers weaving out of lanes. those driving too slow. cinco de mayo is not being singled out. it happens every holiday weekend. the cops know bars and restaurants are having drink specials all weekend.

the best way to avoid it is to get a cab or designated driver. if you are a party host, whether at home or at a bar, you might be liable if a drinking guest is involved in a dui related accident. don't forget you have to pay attorney fees and court fees. you might have to miss days at work. the fines might add up for you, not to mention lose your job. some folks walking out of the jail are worried for that particular reason right there. i mentioned three hots and a cot. it's not three hots. for lunch, they serve dry bologna sandwiches. stay at home if you are going to drink or get a cab. live at the main jail, i'm damian trujillo, today in the bay. >> just not worth it. thank you. 6:07 now. students and teachers expect business as usual. police say they are not going to

take chances. they are stepping up patrols. one year ago today, four students wearing american flag t-shirts on cinco de mayo were sent home out of fears it would spark fights with others on campus. it made national headlines. three of the four boys' families have filed lawsuits. >> there's no conflict anymore. >> since last year's incident, a student group called voices organized campus events promoting unity. you could see a spike in your utility bill, even if you don't use the extra power. pg&e wants to increase rates and change the way customers are charged. they want to make it fair for everybody by creating an adrosz

everybody out here, short sleeves. it's a gorgeous morning. it's perfect weather right now to be out here in the light cotton this morning. yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far. today looks like another gorgeous day across the bay. let's get to the weather headlines. it's a mild start today. the biggest difference is the on shore flow. it takes the temperatures down by a few degrees but it's warm and nice. the marine layer has not had a chance to develop. you don't have to worry about fog. high pressure is firmly in control. it's going to warm us up later today. the temperatures in the 80s and upper 70s at the coast. 78 degrees in places like san francisco, san mateo. upper 80s inland. take it easy out there. if you work outside. once again, we are back out here live. we are going to have a lot of

slowing. slowing into and through livermore. it's marked on main street blocking that road because of the activity by christina and laura. i want to give a shout out to japan's kids day. >> thank you, mike. 6:25 now. new census data shows asians make up the majority in the san jose metro area. sunnyvale, san jose clumped together. the area is now 33% asian, 30% hispanic, 30% white and 3% african-american. the san jose and honolulu areas are the only two where asians are the largest ethnic group. an ipad app that was supposed to save the news entry isn't making any money. scott mcgrew has tech today. >> the daily looks great.

it's fun to read on your ipad. the parent company news corp. says the ipad app lost $10 million over the past quarter. it was the first quarter of the daily. wushd probably wait a year or so before drawing conclusions on how successful the news magazine is. about 800,000 people subscribe to the daily. it's twice the size of the newspaper. sony warned us about the hack attack. a group called anonymous is behind the hack. it knocked them offline and exposed millions of peoples. they skewer companies they are unhappy with. a few members seen behind masks protesting the church of scientology. they say they didn't attack sony's play station network.

garcia-cannon. it is a beautiful day to be anywhere across the bay area today. christina loren joins me live here this morning. one of the warmest days yesterday and warm on tap today. >> a gorgeous day. it's nice out here. we have been running around and aur heart rate is up, which is why we are so warm. you can leave the house with short sleeves on without regrets. we are going to continue to warm up now that the sun is out. the temperatures under high pressure is headed toward the mid-80s and upper 70s later on today. as we head through tomorrow, the marine push will be back. the fog will be back and temperatures cooler for tomorrow. we're going to talk about that and what it means for the mother's day forecast. right now, you might have to get to work on time. the guy who is watching everything happening on the roadways all across the bay area. hi, mike. >> good morning, christina. things are happening around the east bay. it's a big concern. first of all, a 19 minute drive

westbound off the carquinez bridge. at the toll plaza, the sun is an issue getting into your eyes. the back up toward the grand avenue off the curve as well. that's the typical back up. our chopper is heading up further north from there east off interstate 80. it's off the commute. closer to highway 4, reports of a big back up there. the overnight construction around willow that's been extended until 7:00 a.m. approaching the carquinez bridge. we'll give the chopper a chance to get there. we send it back to you live in the east bay. >> thank you very much. no matter where you are, a lot of people are celebrating cinco de mayo on this thursday. before you pour that second margarita, make sure you have a safe way to make it home. i want to check in with damian trujillo. he's live at the county jail, a place where you do not want to end up. good morning. >> reporter: good morning,

laura. three hots and a cot. that's what they will give you hear at the county jail if you decide to drink and drive this cinco de mayo weekend. police will be out in force in case you decide to drink and drive. avoid the 13. the name comes from 13 police agencies sending extra cops to the streets, roads. those driving too slow and don't go on green lights is what they are looking for. police are worried because the cinco de mayo festivities begin on a thursday, so it could be four days of partying which could lead to drunk-driving and other violence. it's the last thing this city needs. the cinco de mayo holiday is not singled out by police. most, if not all holidays and layoffs and budget cuts won't keep the cops from coming after you.

the funding for this, the added enforcement comes from state and federal grants. if you decide to drink on this cinco de mayo four-day weekend, the best advice is to stay home or get a designated driver. >> thank you very much. for a look at the rest of the days news, i want to turn to marla tellez. good morning, marla. >> good morning to you at home. the time is 6:34. the nurses at oakland children's hospital are walking off the job and picketing for their health benefits. christie smith is live where they are protesting for the next five days. they are expected to be there in the next half hour, correct? >> reporter: they are expected to be here in a half hour. a couple of them are here now. there are security guards here as well. there's one there, one there and a couple up the street. just here to make sure nothing

gets out of hand. the nurses say the problem here is that under this new proposal, they couldn't afford to bring their own kids to children's hospital in oakland for care. the back story is the contract between the nurses union and the hospital expired in may, 2010. in october, nurses walked out for three days. now, it's five days. it really comes down to fairness. some people in this economy aren't even working. >> it doesn't make sense for this employer to drive us in ininto other health systems for care. this is the system we work in. this is the place we love. this is the place we think we should be able to bring our children. >> reporter: i just spoke with a hospital spokeswoman who says they are facing tough economic times.

they are misguided. )q9ñ are emp three other health care options including an employer paid kaiser hmo. they have hired 120 replacement nurses and other non-striking employees will be here to fill in. it will be business as usual. they have rescheduled some elective surgeries. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, today in the bay. >> thank you. this morning police are looking for a suspect in a fatal stabbing that happened in east san jose. they responded to the scene at 11:30 last night near lake cunningham park. the victim was taken to a medical center and died a short time later. police have not released the description of the suspect or motive for the crime. people in san francisco are hoping to gather belongings after watching their home go up in flames.
