found a way to get into trouble. damian trujillo joins us live with more on the overnight ruckous. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we don't have the number of arrests yet, but judging from the vandalism, there will be several. the tax preparation building is boarded up. the glass on the sidewalk. about three or four buildings hit here along santa clara street as vandals broke several windows. let me show you what it looks like from the chopper overhead. it took place arnds 11:00. the chopper caught some of the chaos. one was stabbed last night. the four-day cinco de mayo weekend might cause problems. one commandser said this weekend was worrisome to them. we are only a quarter of the way through it. it will be costly to the department. more than 100 special operations

two weeks ago. he worked for the salinas fire department for years now. he's on paid administrative leave. more news on the fan attacked outside dodger's stadium. he's scheduled to have surgery this morning to drain fluid that's on his brain. police are still looking for the two men who attacked him on april 31st during the season opener in l.a. the mount diablo school distric districts, students won't be learning except for one campus. christie smith has more on the story. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. happy friday. you might think high school students would take the day and hang out at home but these students are pulling a page out of the 1960s and hosting a

teach-in at the high school. they are from a human rights class and felt they were being robbed of time they could be in class learning. they are losing three days of school in one month because of budget cuts and teacher furlough days. one of the student organizers says it has to do with their right toss a free education. they have joined in with teachers and administrators with the protest. eight sessions are happening today. art and education, even writing letters to lawmakers about the impact of cuts on students. there's a session called who's stealing our education. this went out in a blast on facebook and robo calls went out to students in the district. they are expecting about 500 students out here today. this gets under way in the quad at about 9:00 this morning. reporting live in concord, christie smith, today in the bay. >> thank you. this morning, san francisco

is preparing to take on the federal government starting june 1st. the county will release undocumented immigrants from jail even if they were asked to be held for a deportation hearing. it's meant to uphold the sanction ware ordinance. now, they hold them until customs enforcement picks them up. this morning, san jose is close to naming the newborns of celebrity falcons. they are adorable. the fifth annual falcon naming contest, kids were invited to come up with a name for the birds. finalists for the girls, there's just one female, i'm told. jaselle -- the winning names will be selected and announced later today. a nice weekend in store for

good morning. we are coming to you live from palo alto. good morning, i'm laura garcia-cannon. if you live in palo alto, you probably know the city got its name from redwood trees called palo alto. it's home to big names including hughlet packard, facebook and stanford university is around the corner from where i am now. bob redell paid a visit to stanford's robot lab. what did you find out?

>> reporter: technology is advancing and robots are popping up more and more, in some cases, in our homes. what are the legal consequences of that? a lawyer at stanford is pondering that question. one day in the future, when a robot goes crazy, destroys your property, comes after you, we know what you are thinking. >> where can i find a good lawyer? >> reporter: who should be held liable for a run away robot? the user or manufacturer? this lawyer believes the future of the robotics industry is based on that question. >> do you think you are going to make one if they are responsible for everything that goes wrong? >> reporter: he's urging america's legal system on how to protect consumer rights and shield robot companies.

you talk about marin and it's a smooth drive. no problems from highway 12 all the way to 37 in navato. it's great news. it's a get away friday. we should have a lighter drive-through much of the morning. there is an itch shoe on eastbound 80 at carlson. it's a new accident reported there. it sounds like it is blocking the slow lane. the richmond fire department is heading out there. two cars involved. no injuries reported yet. at least the slow lane is heading away from the bay bridge from berkeley. we get a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the east shore is clearly visible across the top and middle of your screen. no problems. looking out toward livermore, 580 westbound is moving smoothly as well. a 14 minute drive from the alta

officers arrested him last night. he stole it just last week. san jose's airport is not getting a new name for now. some city officials suggested renaming the san jose international airport as a way to bring in more money. with a $1 billion make over to pay for and the challenge of limited costs in this economy, officials considered the idea to generate more revenue. a smeshl committee is against it. they will revisit the idea later in the year. a warriors guard is feeling good. he's the winner of the nba's sportsmanship award. we followed him for a day in the life feature, where he hit a full-court shot and was his usual, enthusiastic self. the nba is donating $10,000 to the east bay chapter of habitat for humanity, a great

non-profit. sony, once again, apologizing for the play station debuckle. saying it's this close to getting it fixed. scott mcgrew joins us with more on that. >> this close. the latest apology comes from the ceo itself. we talk about how customers are upset and it may have gotten into the hands of hackers. what we don't talk about is how it's been two weeks since the network went down and nobody has been able to play madden football online. many young people, that's their favorite thing to do. they are hopeful after sony said the network will come back online, soon. in some ways, that's probably more important than yet another apology. meanwhile, before the sony hack, the biggest hack in history was the one that got e-mail addresses from best buy. it happened just last month. best buy says this morning more e-mail addresses have been lost

they canceled classes because of budget cuts. three days coming up in may, the students joined in with teachers, administrators and community members providing four hours of lessons. how to voice their concerns over the budget cuts. school districts are facing the same thing. they are trimming the school year. if they propose an all cuts budget, districts are warning it could get worse. here at mount diablo high, it looks like things will get started about 9:00 in the morning with the teach-in. they have been spreading the word on facebook and they are expecting up to 500 people. reporting live in concord, christie smith, today in the bay. >> thank you for the update there. i want to check in with marla tellez. she's in the news room with some breaking news. >> the breaking news is

happening in san francisco. good morning to you at home. this morning, a man is dead after a hit and run crash in san francisco. a car hit a 55-year-old man on masonic avenue about 2:30 this morning. they found the car shortly after the crash and arrested the suspect, a 23-year-old man. pg&e is giving the all clear this morning after a gas leak in pleasant hill. the shelter and place order for the area around park boulevard between stephenson drive was lifted before 11:00 last night. they are wrapping up work on the leak. they were called to the scene after people living in the area reported smelling gas and hearing hissing noise. they will not be allowed to charge you more for the improvements they wake.

they rejected pg&e's request to start tracking costs associated with gas safety improvements. tracking the costs would have been the first step. the party is over, but not before the cinco de mayo crowds in the south bay left behind serious damage. police rr busy clearing clouds and arresting people for fighting, breaking windows and other violence. damian trujillo is live along allen rock avenue where some of the action happened. good morning, damian. >> reporter: good morning, marla. this is what the rebelers left behind, a lot of broken glass here. about four different businesses that were hit. this one had to be boarded up. the owner here asked what happened. let me get you over here. alberto is the owner of one of the businesses hit. if i could stand you over here and get your reaction to what happened here on your block. >> well, there were people walking by and doing damage to the properties, to every single business around here.

celebrate. the department brought out more than 100 special operations officers to monitor the crowd. it may have kept this from getting worse. it may have spared downtown from any type of vandalism. it's going to cost the department overtime cost because this is coming out of the department coffers, not state or federal grant moneys. the lady here asked who is going to pay for it. she said she had to ask her boss if she has insurance. she's bewildered they will use cinco de mayo to celebrate in this fashion. >> thank you. it's just senseless there. time is 5:35. a suspected serial killer will get the decision on whether or not he can represent himself. he said hiring an attorney is too expensive. he's not eligible for public

okay. yesterday, scientists at stanford in conjunction with nasa confirmed two key aspects of einstein's theory of relativity. they did this with hypersensitive gyro scopes and the probe, the satellite that is currently in earth east orbit. measurements confirm the effect that basically states time and space around a large gravitation gravitational. if you drop a bowling ball on a trampoline, you get distortion. >> oh. >> the next explanation, this is going to explain the theory of time dragging. that theory is, if you have a large gravitational object, this is earth, this is space.

60s, early '70s, 60% of kids rode to school. today, it's down to single digits. >> what a difference. a lot of people are concerned about safety, but everybody hop on a bike and get going. sounds good. hey, it's gorgeous weather in the bay area almost every day for biking. i want to check in with christina loren and a look at the forecast today. >> yeah, we have a good looking forecast. temperatures are going to climb into the 70s. you don't have to adjust the term stat. you are talking about perfection for the next few days. i think mother nature is doing us good this mother's day. it's why the temperatures are going to be nice. it's going to be mild compared to where we were earlier this week. we saw the 90s. today, we are going to stick below 80 degrees. low pressure brings clouds and coastal fog. high pressure is going to be able to maintain control later
