arnold schwarzenegger negand ma shriver are now living apart. captions paid for by nbc-universal television welcome to "today" on this tuesday morning. i'm meredith vieira. >> i'm matt lauer. let's go right to memphis, tennessee. this is a live look at the flooding there this morning all along the mississippi. that river is cresting just shy of the records set all the way back in 1937. that's dramatic stuff there. >> officials say it could take two weeks for the water to recede, but it looks like famed landmarks like graceland and beal street will be spared. >> and it was an emotional day in court for casey anthony. we'll tell you what brought her to tears and how it could be harder to pick a jury than first
7:02 am
anticipated. >> and a little more than a week after their wedding the duke and duchess of cambridge have set off on their honeymoon. where did they go? more on that coming up. let's begin with the widespread flooding of the mississippi river. al, good morning. >> good morning. to give you a sense we are in the mississippi. this is a playground. there is a montessori school they have sandbagged, but to give you a feel of how deep the water is, that house behind me looks like a two-story house. in fact, it's three stories. the first story is submerged and the docks in front of it are floating docks. they are 12 feet above normal. you see the red tiled area? that's a floor and a half shed that's under water now. it's bad here but down river the worst is yet to come.
7:03 am
the rising mississippi river will not back down. hundreds of homes in memphis are under water, rooftops barely visible. people living here had to evacuate. >> a lot of these people have lost everything that they have. it's really pretty sad because, you know, it's a life altering experience. >> reporter: experts say the flood waters here won't recede for week, with dirty muck and debris lingering in places people once called home. >> all we can do now is let the water go down, try to keep people safe. >> reporter: in some areas, everything has changed. this used to be a playground. now it's a fishing pond, as residents wait for the water to back down. >> we caught a 12-pounder friday night. >> reporter: just down river in northern mississippi, this used to be the parking lot of the harris casino in tunica. casinos could be closed for weeks, crippling the city's economy. further south in vicksburg, mississippi, families are
7:04 am
packing up before things get worse. >> the flood waters are going to get us. it's coming up and it's coming fast. >> reporter: in louisiana, spill gates were opened monday to keep the flood waters from reaching new orleans. the spill gates were built after the deadly floods of 1927 and have only been opened ten times since. back here in mississippi, engineers say, for now, the levees are holding. but for those in the path of the mighty mississippi, the most difficult times could still lie ahead. normally the river rises this time of year because of the snow melt. but here's the big problem. this is why this river is flooding today. and all of its tributarieses. we have gotten so much rain in the month of april. areas picking up 100, 150 to 200% of rainfall normally gotten for the month of april. and it has nowhere to go. the tributaries fill it up into the mississippi.
7:05 am
here's what we look for as far as the flooding is concerned. these are the crests we are looking for as we head down river. may 10, memphis crests around 48 feet. vicksburg on may 19 at 57.5 feet. baton rouge, may 22, 47.5 feet. in new orleans, may 23, 19.5 feet. that's a big, big problem. as you can imagine this will continue for days, months -- i should say weeks to come. the other big problem, all the muck and gunk that's been washed ashore. we have been talking with health officials. the big problem will be the cleanup. a lot of the water is filthy. big problems. it will be a health risk for at least the next few weeks. meredith? >> all right, al. thank you very much. we'll get the rest of al's forecast in a bit. it's 7:05. here's matt. >> new developments tied to the raid on osama bin laden's compound. pakistani officialses now say they will agree to a key request
7:06 am
by the white house and grant the u.s. access to three of bin laden's wiveses. nbc's peterer alexander is in islamabad with the latest on this. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. today the new york timeses says president obama insists the team hunting down osama bin laden be large enough to fight out of pakistan if they met resistance from police officers or soldiers. the times says senior officials revealed that two teams of specialists were on stand-by, one to bury bin laden if he was killed and a second made up of lawyerses, interrogators and translators if he was captured alive. they do expect the request for access to bin laden's widows to be granted soon. besides combing through the treasure trove of evidence including videotapes seized inside bin laden's secret compound, u.s. officials say pakistan is prepared to give
7:07 am
american intelligence officers access to osama bin laden's three widows or to their information gathered from the interrogations. >> i think these wives were not aware about the al qaeda operations, but they can definitely provide information about some people who are in contact with bin laden in the last ten years. >> reporter: bin laden's youngest, favorite wife, 25-year-old amal, the woman who tried to protect her husband from navy s.e.a.l.s is from a religious yemeni family. the other two wives were saudi and well educated. one with a ph.d. in islamic law. one report suggests the children living inside bin laden's compound, at least 15 by most accounts, were home-schooled. >> the children were without a play ground. they were just playing with some rabbits. >> reporter: the children all survived the raid. most of them under the age of 10 were born after 9/11.
7:08 am
>> the question is will this younger group of kids from his final wife, will they take up the cause? i think that explains why the u.s. military was concerned about what would happen to them after the raid. >> reporter: on monday, pakistan's prime minister addressed the nation for the first time since the u.s. operation calling allegationses that pakistani authorities were eitherer incompetent or complacent absurd. >> no other country has done is so much to interdict al qaeda than the isi and armed forces. >> reporter: the u.s. confirms that pakistani intelligence did help the u.s. track down bin laden's courier. still, with the outing of the top operative in pakistan last week apparently to under mine america's covert activities
7:09 am
here. also this morning the guardian, one of britain's most respected newspapers reports a secret deal between the u.s. and pakistan ten years ago to allow the u.s. to conduct a raid in pakistan if they knew where bin laden was hiding. afterwards both sides agreed that pakistan would publically protest the operation. matt? >> peter, thank you very much. republican speaker of the house john boehner traveled to pakistan, afghanistan and iraq. he joinses us in studio exclusively. it's a pleasure to have you here. thanks for coming in. >> good morning. >> we could do this interview on the things you and president obama disagree on. i don't want to do that so let's start with common ground. you and the president agree we can't walk away from the relationship with pakistan over what's happened, but you agree the pakistanis have to answer difficult questions. at this moment in time when you look at pakistan do you see a true ally?
7:10 am
>> i see an ally. clearly there are questions that remain about what they knew or didn't know about bin laden being in their country. there are certainly questions about their willingness to pursue terrorists but maybe not others. >> do you trust them? >> i do trust them. but i think it's a moment when we need to look each other in the eye and decide, are we real allies? are we going to work together? if we are, you are either all in or you're not in. >> i hate to make it about money, but over the last decade the u.s. has sent pakistan almost $20 billion in aid, some of it to help fight the war on terror. have americans gotten their money worth when it comes to pakist pakistan? >> pakistan has been an asset when it comes to fighting the war on terror. don't forget pakistan lost more troops and more individuals than we have here in america. so they have been an ally. they have been helpful. but there are questions and i
7:11 am
don't think we ought to have questions. if we are going to be allies and fight the war together we need to be in it together all the time. >> after the news surfaced that osama bin laden had been killed there was a good feeling in this country. it was not between republicans and democrats. there was unity, a sense of shared accomplishment that i hadn't really seen since 9/11 when this country pulled together. but we know it's fleeting. these emotions are fleeting. will we see unity shattered in the coming weeks when we start to debate things like the death ceiling? >> i don't know what's happened to bin laden and the capture, which is a great tribute to president bush, president obama, the military and clearly the intelligence officials who took a small thread of information and were able to exploit it to determine where he was. but that's the war on terror. we've got formidable challenges here at home. listen, you and i are here because we live the american dream. we had real opportunitiese.
7:12 am
i'm concerned the opportunities available to us won't be available for our kids and grandkids. >> the debt ceiling is over $14 trillion. people at home can understand that with credit cards and mortgages. you have said and the president agrees it would be irresponsible to allow us to go into default. isn't it true the fight we are about to see over the debt ceiling will make the battles over the budget look like child's play? >> yes, that's right. this is a window of opportunity for us to address the big challenges that face our country. for the last -- 45 of the last 50 years we spent more money than we brought in. we cannot continue to do that without imprisoning the future for our kids and grandkids. this is the moment, now, to address the problems as adults. >> in a speech you said
7:13 am
republicans would only agree to lift the debt ceiling if it is accompanied by larger spending cuts. without significant cuts 57b reforms there will be no debt limit increase and the cuts should be greater than the accompanying increase in debt authority the president is given. we should be talking about cuts of trillions, not just billions. when you look at the gut-wrenching negotiations that took place to get $39 billion in cuts for the 2011 continuing resolution, how in the world are you going to get trillions in cuts? >> i think we need to work together. we've got really two big pots of money. we have the discretionary part of the budget, about one-third of the budget and then we have mandatory spend ein ispending, entitlement programs. we know those programs won't exist in the future if we don't change them. they are unaffordable for our kids. we have to do what needs to be
7:14 am
done. >> are you ready to negotiate? you're already getting heat from the right side of the party. this is from the tea party, we have been deeply disappointed. instead of a fighter, mr. boehner has been a surrenderist -- not a word, we looked it up. from michelle bachman, the debt ceiling vote will offer an opportunity that was squanlderred during the vote for the 2011 continuing resolution. you're in a tough spot. >> i'm a regular guy with a big job. i went to washington 20 years ago because i thought government was too big, spent too much and wasn't being held accountable. i don't feel differently today. this impending debt load on our kids has to be dealt with and it will be. >> why not use an increase in revenues? tax hikes to help with the debt problem? what's tent that the tax cuts oe bush era have accomplished their goals?
7:15 am
>> what some are suggesting is we take the money from people who would invest in our economy and create jobs and give it to the government. the fact is you can't tax the people we expect to invest in the economy and create jobs. washington doesn't have a revenue problem. washington has a spending problem. >> you talk about creating jobs. when the bush era tax cuts were passed in 2001, unemployment was 4.5%. today it's at 9%, just down from 10%. why are the bush era tax cuts creating jobs? >> they created 8 million jobs over the first ten years they were in existence. we have lost about 5 million of those jobs during this recession. but you can't raise taxes. we can take all of the money from the wealthy and guess what. we'd hardly make a dent in the annual deficit and do nothing about the 14.3 trillion worth of debt. >> so as you sit here today,
7:16 am
raising taxes is a nonstarter? >> it's off the table. everything else is on the table. >> upcoming presidential election. with all the people thinking of running on the republican side, are you surprised the guy who seems to have gotten the most attention to date is donald trump? >> there are a lot of good candidates out there. donald trump would be one of them, maybe. he really hasn't said he's running if he's running. >> would you endorse him? >> we haven't seen all of the candidates yet. i think he brings an awful lot to the debate and there are a lot of of candidates and the process of going through the presidential primary to sort out the good from the bad and there's a lot of good out there. >> there is a lot of interest in the governor of new jersey, chris christie. some folks plan to come to new jersey to ask him to run. do you think chris christie would make a great candidate for president? >> i do. i think he's done pretty well. he does a great job and he

♪ our house in the >> 7:43. we are back with today's real estate, the best and worst home improvements. sprucing up your house can lead to a payday when it's time to sell but when is an upgrade an investment and when is it a waste of money. barbara corcoran is today's rey contributor. good to see you. >> good morning. >> this is a question every homeowner has to ask themselves. where do i put my money and spruce up? is there a rule of thumb before we get to the specifics on your list? >> typically, spend 5% of the value of the home and not even think about it. in a rare instance you could spend as much as 10% and get the money back. >> all right. you've got a list we're going to go over, the three best home improvements. >> the ones that make sense. >> and the worst. the first thing a prospective buyer sees when they get to your house is the front door. you say, replace it. >> of course. it's inexpensive. costs $1,200 and you get more
7:45 am
than that in your money back. what's great about replacing the front door other than that it's shape is people immediately decide if they don't want your house and it is often based on a first impression. >> you walk up to the front door and if it looks awful, you assume immediately that what's inside that front door will also be awful. >> exactly. well put. that's usually the case, by the way. the reason people make the assumption after they have seen a few houses. >> you also recommend replacing the garage door. what's the cost that you can recoup on something like this? >> you'll get about 87% back roughly on the cost of a garage door. >> the average cost is $1,291, and you get back around $1,083. >> yes. the reason the garage door is important is for many homes, particularly one-story homes, the garage door is more than 50% of the front facade. so you really can't afford to overlook it. >> and finally, in terms of the good suggestions for home improvements, you like adding a deck.
7:46 am
that surprised me a little bit. why is it important? >> if you look at a house without an outdoor wood deck today it looks like something is missing. buyers love decks and even daydreaming about using it in the summertime in the middle of the winter. >> you need to do it well. if you don't bring in someone who knows what they are doing it looks like the deck landed next to your house from outer space and landed next to your house. know. it's so true. there are bad decks, but it's roughly 10 x 30 at a cost of $10,000 and you get $7,000 of it back. >> the worst ideas. you say a home office remodel is a bad idea. why? >> it's a bad idea and often thought about by the man of the house, i must say. so the woman should really weigh in on this. they're expensive to put in, they're very expensive to equip, and you will never get your money back. right now they are typically $28,000 to get $13,000 back. and one other thing is you lose a bedroom.
7:47 am
that's a terrible idea when it comes to selling a house. shoppers sell by bedrooms. >> next home improvement is adding a sunroom. this surprised me. why is a deck a good idea and a sunroom a bad idea? >> because a deck is always used. a sunroom is never used. people typically furnish it with leftover furniture. >> it's expensive, by the way. about $75,000 to add one. >> and after you pay for it you have to heat and cool it which is expensive. >> finally quickly, people may be surprised, but adding a new bathroom is not worth the money. >> never worth the money. people will just not pay the premium that it costs to add a bathroom. although it's the smallest room in the house, it costs $40,000. you are better off doing a quick nip and tuck on a few things in the bathroom. make it look good enough. >> all right. barbara corcoran, great advice. thank you as always. coming up next, prince anli and princess katharine leave for their 00 moon.
