ridiculous. too much sun, way too much champagne, way too many super stars i'm falling all over along with 4,500 other journalists. this morning we were speaking with three of the stars, angelina jolie, jack black, and dustin hoffman, for their movie, "kung fu panda 2." i'm going to catch up with them live later on. meanwhile, back to you, matt. also ahead, new details on the disappearance of madeleine mccann who vanished from her parents' hotel room in portugal. her mother has now written an emotional new book about the torment she lives with every day, the toll that that case has taken on her marriage, and the warning sign from madeleine that she fears she may have missed. we're going to talk to kate and jerry mccann in a live interview coming up. then a "today" investigation. identity theft is something we talk about an awful lot. but have you ever thought about someone actually stealing your child's identity? thieves are sometimes targeting

kids, sometimes even newborns, and they're raking up thousands of dollars in debt in their names and in some cases causes them to go bankrupt. we'll tell you what you can do to protect your children later on. but we begin this morning were the personal handwritten journals of bin laden. peter alexander is here with the latest on this. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. senior u.s. intelligence officials tell us that they are combing through not one but multiple journals seized. he was evidently a meticulous note taker. in the words of one official, bin laden would wake up every morning to try to come up with new ideas. during last week's raid, osama bin laden's private journals. officials say his writing shows

the terrorist's leader was focused on attacking the u.s. and causing mass casualties while secretly trying to find out ways to bring in al qaeda into the united states. >> this is a guy who is still very much in charge of al qaeda. >> reporter: nbc news has learned in his writings bin laden reasons the only way to get the attention of the u.s. government is by killing large numbers of americans. u.s. officials say most of the materials was found in what appeared to be bin laden's office where they also seized computers, hard drives and correspondence between leaders. bin laden would often discuss the places he would like attacked, the best time for attacks and even al qaeda members he thought would be right for particular jobs. his fourth son omar said his father began a habit of recording many of his thoughts and plans when his family lived

in the sudan in the 1990s. he lashed out at. omar who has been estranged from his father since before 9/11 spoke to matt in 2008. >> i think if my father died, there would be a lot of people who would say i am now the head of al qaeda. >> reporter: in fact, this week an al qaeda affiliate vowed to continue attacks against the u.s. and other enemies. >> his statement threatened that one day america will yearn for the days of bin laden, in other words, what's coming is even worse than what we have had here before. >> reporter: u.s. officials tell nbc news they found so much materials in the come pound they couldn't take it with them including details of his movements and activities, the kind of critical information that could help identify other al qaeda operation

ssee, is moving south and it's headed for baton rouge next week. it's a flood of historic proportions that could have a price talk of up to $4 billion. 50 miles from the banks of the big money, residents in yazoo city, mississippi, are protecting their homes with sand bags. they're backing up tributaries like the yazoo river and pushing it over its banks. the yazoo is predicted to rise another 10 feet. >> you know, i don't think even the engineers are sure. >> reporter: in vicksburg where the mississippi and yazoo meet, austin golding is the third generation of his family to make his living off these waters. >> it's going do what it wants to do. >> reporter: the headquarters for the family barge business is now an island and austin steers his boat across what was the parking lot. he knows well how the river can give and take. >> you just learn to have patience and stick with it, hope

and pray for the best but prepare for the worst and hopefully everything turns out okay. >> reporter: as the flood moves downriver, the officials may open the morganza spillway to spare that heavily populated city and new orleans. but that means flooding an area of southwest louisiana with 13,000 buildings, 25,000 people, and 3 million acres of land. in the flood zone is john bernard's cypress-clad home. he's packing up and leaving. big and tough, this oil worker knows he's no match for the river and what it could do. what is it like to thing about losing your house? >> words -- no words.

because i built this myself. but, you know -- >> reporter: john bernard is a survivor and so are a lot of other people that we've met. they're determined to get through this. the big question now is when the spillway will open. and few people here are waiting for a definitive answer because they're already doing what they can to protect their homes and themselves. matt? >> anne thompson. thank you very much. now let's turn to politics and the 2012 presidential race. newt gingrich made it official on wednesday announcing he's, in fact, running for president. he did that on youtube and twitter. perhaps the best known republican in the field today but gingrich has a message about messy personal life that include s two divorces, three marriages, and a lengthy affair. here is more. >> reporter: everywhere he goes, newt gingrich hears the questions. >> i want to talk about your

personal life. i hate doing it. >> you've been married three times, you've had messy divorces. >> i think you've shared your life and you've gone to god to seek forgiveness and reconciliation. >> reporter: gingrich is trying hard to reach out to evangelicals and it's what brought him to reach out to them. that's a voting block that poses a particularly big challenge for newt gingrich. >> the problem with mr. gingrich is not once but twice he has violated that solemn and sacred oath and that's why it's a show stopper for me. >> reporter: gingrich who once campaigned as a family values candidate has been dogged by

years for marital infidelity and he left both of his ex-wives when they had serious illnesses. one was in the hospital being treated for cancer. the other had been diagnosed with m.s. >> there's been no time in my life, partially driven by my passion for this country i worked too hard and things happened that were not appropriate. >> reporter: his wife, callista, 22 years younger, married in 2000, their relationship actually began seven years earlier while she was a young congressional staffer and gingrich was married to his second wife. the affair continued the everyone tire time when he was speaker including when he called for the impeachment of bill clinton. today he touts his recent conversion to catholicism and the nation's need for spiritual renewal. he's using money, lots of it through an organization known as newt inc. one of these groups, renewing american lewdership is specifically designed to win back the hearts of evangelicals.

>> to help people of faith take back their own country. >> reporter: the group is run by rick tyler who's also been gingrich's spokesman for the past ten years. >> i talk to these pastors all the time, and i don't think there's any doubt that they find him to be genuinely repentant of past failures. >> is he going to be a shoo-in for the campaign? >> sure. >> reporter: there was a fast and prayer campaign last fall to ask people to uphold the sacredness of marriage. there was $100,000 spent on a successful campaign to oust judges who supported same-sex marriage. bob was chief spokesman for that campaign. >> gingrich was able to provide the funding that allowing you to get out o that message. >> there's no doubt. if we did not have the initial funding, there's no way you could even get started. you couldn't get out of the starting gate. so that was crucial resources. >> reporter: but even supporters admit gingrich still has work to do.

>> my message was be transparent, be authentic, be humble about it. and you have to show a growth of maturity. you have to show i've matured, i've grown. >> reporter: a recent nbc "wall street journal" poll shows just how much his personal life may matter. 51% of republican voters said they were uncomfortable with a candidate who'd had multiple marriages. >> michael, thank you very much. we appreciate it. chuck todd is nbc's white house correspondent and our political director. chuck, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. >> we got to tweet on wednesday, newt gingrich is in and as michael pointed out there's some baggage. let's talk about the other side. this is a guy who's cultivated the ideas as an ideas guy. he raised $32 million between

2009 and 20010 that dwarves what the other potential candidates have raised combined so what are his chances? >> look. his chances depend on who else gets into the race at this point. he's sort of this guy that sits out -- reminds me of joe biden and chris dodd during the 2008 race. he's there if everybody else falters. he could be the guy that is the best debater. he may do very well in the debates. he's very good at that. he's very good in the media, very quick wit and can look like the smartest guy in the room. the problem for gingrich besides the personal issues is going to be that of all the candidates that are likely to run, he's going to look like the most washington candidate. this is not the year to look like a washington candidate. >> you talk about mitt romney. a lot of people think he will run. he's going to give a speech on health care. this is an achilles' heel. he's a guy who passed a health care law strikingly similar to the obama health care law that republicans hate.

how is he going to get past this issue? >> one thing that the romney folks are doing is trying to talk about it and distance themselves before he formally announces. so he's doing a speech today in michigan, and in talking with folks around romney, they say, look, after this speech they hope that republicans see that he is for repealing president obama's health care plan and he's got an idea to replace it. the problem for romney is an issue for a lot of these tea party conservatives isn't the fact that somehow obama's health care plan and romney's health care plan are similar. the problem is that he was for this mandate even in the state of massachusetts. tea party republicans don't want them telling republicans what to do whether on the federal level or the state level. >> let me talk about donald trump.

he fell considerably in the polls over the week. made a comment. he said he had no idea he was going to get hammered as much as he got hammered the last couple of weeks. i thought all signs were leading for him running for president. do we see some reconsideration now? >> what's interesting is we're not hearing from him as much in the last couple of weeks. he's not calling up reporters complaining about his coverage anymore. it seems that this has been a passing fancy for him. he realizes that this has probably been destructive to his brand. the president embarrassed him frankly at the white house correspondents dinner sitting in the audience. it wasn't just him but the other comedian up there as well. he takes all this stuff personally, matt. you know it well. i know it well. this thing seems to be done and frankly it's not a surprise. it's just surprising that it happened so fast. >> or he could surprise us and keep going with it. you never know with donald trump and we shouldn't try to predict his future. >> that's true. >> thanks very much. appreciate it. let's get the rest of the morning's top stories. ann curry is standing by at the desk. two men in new york city are accused of trying to buy guns and grenades.

and are in custody. officials say they had allegedly made threatening statements about wanting to attack the city. this man was convicted for his role of being a nazi death camp guard. the 91-year-old former ohio auto worker was sentenced to five years in prison. there are new fears that one of the reactors may have a leak. that could prevent workers from having full and effective control over the cooling of the fuel rods. exposure of those rods could put them at a risk for a full pang meltdown but they say it's now stable and cool at this time. in southeastern spain thousands of people spent the night outdoors in fear of more aftershocks after the worst earthquake in 50 years. two tremors rocked lorca. sending walls and steeples tumbling to the ground and killing many people. libyan rebels say they have

made a major breakthrough, in their fight against gadhafi capturing the airport in the strategically important city of misrata. the fight has been the bloodiest. a rebel victory, this has been their most significant yet. meantime libyan state television showing him making his appearance on wednesday, his first since they killed one of his sons. evangelist billy graham was sent to the hospital. he was alert and resting comfortably last night. and finally while kate's dress at the royal wedding set off a worldwide reaction, perhaps the person most stunned was one princess in belgium. isabella orsini married the prince of belgium two years ago, and side by side with the duchess of cambridge the similarities now have the internet seeing double to the tiaras to the lacy long skirts.

when asked about the images, the princess replied that, quote, kate middleton has good taste. that's a classy response. but i think privately she said, oh, you so did copy me. >> so she's a belgium valley girl, is that what you're saying? >> aren't all wedding dresses a copy of other wedding dresses? >> yeah, but look at this. >> given that answer, it's kind of like a belgian waffle. >> because it's kind of similar -- okay, let's move on. >> we missed you so much when you were in memphis and vicksburg. on a serious note, that story continues. >> let's take a look at what's happening at least as far as today is concerned. we're looking for the latest river crest. it's going to be sunday, about 57.5 feet, really well above the record and it continues to work its way down toward new orleans. the big problem, too, is we're going to be looking at rain.

it's her first visit to cannes. the underlying thought there is it's her last. i'm not letting her go again. i'm here now, sucker. talk about hot. three of the hottest stars in hollywood caused quite a stir for their debut. i'm talking about angelina jolie, jack black, and dustin hoffman. the last time jack black and angelina jolie were at the cannes film festival together were with natalie moralez. jack black spilled the beans about angelina jolie. hopefully he can do that again. coming up we've got an investigation. criminals stealing the identity of children, in some cases even before they're born and building large debts in their name. how do they do it and what can you do to protect your kids?

nearby. but that morning her mom kate writes why didn't you come when sean and i cried last night? she changed the subject quickly but kate writes she might have missed a hugely important clue. it's my belief there was somebody in or trying to get in the children's bedroom that night. she also reveals that a staff had posted a note that a predator might have seen that the children might have been left unattended while they dined minutes away. they checked every 15 minutes or so until the last time when madeleine was gone and the window was open. >> when i went in, there was a gust that blew the curtains opened, that's when i knnoticed that the shutter had been pulled off. >> kate concentrated on the find madeleine website which provide computer generated images of how

madeleine might be ageing but in her book she writes about thoughts of suicide, to swim out to sea until she was exhausted and allow the water to pull me under. she writes of her marriage almost breaking and that family life with her twins they keep trying to hold together. >> we do have, you know, periods of normalcy. still have to do the cooking and washing. we have lots of time with them and then it just kind of gets you, madeleine's still not here. >> she told of the nightmare that still invades her sleep. i can see madeleine cold and mottled on a stone slab, an inch now as it was four years ago. they stick to one disputed fact. there's no evidence, none, that she's been physically harmed. >> thank you very much. kate and jerry mccann are in

london this morning. good morning to the both of you. >> good morning. >> this is a very personal book that you've written, kate. you talk about being consumed by guilt or many of these last four year, is that guilt as a result of this potential missed sign that you write about? >> i mean the guilt that i felt was primarily related to the fact that this has happened to madeleine and we weren't there at the time, and that is something obviously about which we've counseled for the last four years and will always have to live with. >> you know, you do write openly about the strain this has put on your relationship. you talk about the fact that your marriage to gerry nearly dissolved because you were unable to be intimate. it strained all of your relationships but you were unable to be intimate with gerry. why do you think that happened? i think it would be unrealistic to -- for this not to have impacted all aspects of our life, and obviously our

relationship is a big part of that, and i think i've explained quite clearly in my book why i felt like that might be. i know it was an issue that we tried to work through like all of the other problems due to madeleine's abduction. >> gerry, how would you describe your marriage today as opposed to how it was before madeleine's disappearance? >> i think we're back to where we were. the marriage is rock solid and we're reunited. we've create add stable environmental for our other children. >> i've tried to imagine wait must have been like for the two of you in that period of time throughout this entire four-year period. but specifically in that time, i think it was september 2007 until july of 2008 where you were actually considered suspects in that case. how did you deal with that? >> i mean it was an incredibly difficult period. the main reason for that was

because of the negative effect it was having on the search for madeleine. at that point we realized nobody was looking for her. as a parent, that was absolutely heartbreaking and obviously doors were shut to us at that time as well because of the situation and it hindered the search. and in the end it's madeleine that suffered as a result. >> as a father, there are so many things that are tough to read. you wrielt very openly and emotionally, kate, about your worst fear and being consumed with the thoughts of your worst fear that madeleine was taken by a pedophile and what may have happened to her. have you managed to distance yourself from those thoughts on a daily basis? >> i have very much so. it was something that was obviously my main concern in the early hours, days, and weeks. and it was incredibly difficult to get away from that. but, you know, we don't know what's happened to madeleine.

we don't know who's taken her or why, and i have been able now to consider other scenarios as well. >> you write about your twins, sean and emily. you say they're six years old. you say it's so difficult because they have so many questions. but now they're a source of constant comfort for you. how are they doing? >> they're doing brilliantly honestly. >> quite amazing. >> they are. they're incredible. you know, we've always been told if they ask you questions answer as openly and honestly as you can, and we've done that. they're aware of everything that's happen and they know what we're trying to do and that everything is helping and, please, god, we'll find them one day and she'll be back to play with them. >> the book is simply called "madeleine." thank you, kate and gerry, for your time. we appreciate it. >> thank you.

>> reporter: this guy works at an auto body shop just miles from katy's house and we tracket another one working at a local 99 cent store. a leading credit bureau says both of these men stole katy's social security number to take out mortgages and auto loan os. >> it's not fair. >> that they're still out there. >> mm-hmm. >> reporter: our "today" investigation discovered thousands of young victims nationwide. >> each pink dot represents a suspect that we've been able to positively identify their location. >> reporter: jamie may is a chief security investigator. >> why are babies so popular. >> they don't realize they have a problem until they start using their credit. >> reporter: and that may not happen until your child is 18, applying for their first loan and credit card, giving thieves free rein with their identities for three years.

>> never had i thought to run a credit check. >> reporter: stealing their socials is easier than you thing. that number is actually a code. the first three digits stand for the state it was issued in. the last six digits are the proximate date it was issued. now with simple software crooks can predict new numbers. when your baby gets a new number at the hospital, it may already be stolen which is exactly what happened to riley. her mom discovered it later by chance. >> the government gave me a bum number that obviously they hadn't cleared. it's a financial birth defect and parents are not warned. >> reporter: in many cases the police don't have the time or resources to catch these crooks leaving parents like katy's dad out in the cold. >> in a nutshell, what have the police done for you? >> nothing.

it's almost like they don't want to be bothered. >> we found two suspects easily. we found this gentleman in arizona in two days. jeff rossen from nbc news. according to the credit bureau you've been using a young girl's social security number and wracking up a million dollars. >> half a million dollars. >> have you been using her social security number and been passing it off as your own? >> i don't understand very so they brought in a translator, in 2006 for $150,000. 2006 for $238,000. that's against the law. >> i don't want to talk right now. you want to arrest me, go ahead. >> i'm not a police officer. i want to know why you did this. >> why don't i see no cops? >> reporter: that's a good question. i don't know why you haven't been arrested.

mario salinas working in a store parking lot rangling grocery carts, the credit bureau says using katy's social he's wracked up every 35 grand in debt. according to the credit bureau you have. [ speaking spanish ] >> reporter: here's a young girl who's credit could have been ruined. do you have anything to say to her? >> i don't know. >> reporter: you don't know. authorities know a flaw in the credit system lets them get away with it. when someone applies for, say, a loan, usually the bank only checks that the social security number has a good credit history. believe it or not, most banks don't check whether that number was assigned to that name because the government charges a fee to do that and most banks don't want to pay. so thieves can use a child's identity over and over again.

names of the victims. two victims and the shooter were killed here tuesday in what's being investigated as a murder/suicide. we know the names and have spoken with family and friends but will release it after the university does in respect to their situation. the first to know will be counselors here on campus. they'll be briefed at 9:00 a.m. we'll be at that press conference at 10:00 and carry it live on nbcbayarea.com. mike's going to have a look at your morning commute right after this.

time where people are going through turmoil and i think a lot of people are going to connect to this guy. >> i think so. i think it kind of speaks to some of the things that people are possibly going through. and it's just a very regal, human, touching story. >> it's not all drama for you these days. you're on "the office" taking over the office manager role of steve carell. did you have second thoughts? you walk in. there's a group of people, they've all been together and you're the new guy. >> i was thinking this is steve ka real's last season and i'm a fan. that's how we call up with the idea for the show. on the first day of set and looking at this familiar cast who knows each other very well was slightly intimidating. >> do you think we might see more of you? >> it's just four, and thus far, no. no plans to come back. you're look at me -- >> i may be taking over here at

together then. >> i don't see how we can operate in afternoon without some cooperation with pakistan. >> well, the president is now said to be preparing a major speech on middle east policy, and given what we saw with the arab spring, tunisia, libya, the violence in syria, what should -- i know you don't like to give advice to current presidents, but given your foreign policy stance, what do you think the message should be to the arab world right now, to the muslim world specifically? >> it will be an important speech. guaranteed there are upheavals going on simultaneously. some have the same cause. some have different causes. what the president, i'm sure, will want to do and what he normally does very well is to put out a vision of what america wants to have happen and what it can contribute, say, over the

five-year period. i don't want to give a specific time, so that then we can make specific decisions as issues arise. and i think it's needed. >> okay. i was just going to move on to the subject of china, because you did write the book. in terms of that visit 40 years ago and the ground and the path that would be set then from the moment that nixon stepped onto soil there, at that moment, did you know that the direction of foreign policy in the u.s. was changing? what is the legacy of that trip? >> we knew it was a fundamental change in foreign policy because china was an enemy until then. we wanted to begin a period of potential cooperation and to move them away from the soviet union, which have been their alai al ally.

mark on your skin versus a bad mark. sometimes it's a very subtle difference. >> melanoma is one of the cancers that causes the most deaths. >> it goes undetected. >> plus, bristol palin in the headlines, sporting a new look these days. some have suggested she's had plastic surgery and what bristol is saying about the change in her appearance. she's finally speaking out. we'll take a look at bristol before and after. and the top five places to retire according to "money" magazine from wyoming to the eastern shore of maryland, they look at places with senior economics, especially when it comes to tacks. we're going to run down the list for you. first we're going to get a check of the headlines. ann had to leave a little early and you're going to take care of it. >> that's right. as officials pore through osama bin laden's pretty journals.

precauti precautions you can significantly reduce your risk. doctor, good morning. good to have you here. it's a crucial time to start doing body checks. >> absolutely. skin cancer really needs to be detected early. if it's not detected early it's not as curable. one in five americans is going to develop skin cancer at some time in their lifetime and one person dies every hour from melanoma. the earlier it is detected the better it is. >> where should we be doing body checks? where should we look? >> they're dependent on the actual individual. you should determine your risk base on your risk factors. do you have genetic history? do you have lots of moles all over your body. are they different sizes and shapes? do you spend a lot of time outdoors? if you had one blistering sun

burn, you increase your risk of developing skin cancer by two-fold. you want to take all of these things into account when you determine how frequently you should be doing your body checks. best to see a dermatologist and determine how many times a year you should be seen and when you are doing your body checks, it's great go into a bathroom with great light and start at the top of your head, look all the way down to the bottom of your toes, everywhere in between. look between your toes, your fingers, areas where the sun doesn't shine. it doesn't matter. i tell people to strip down to their birthday suts and check. >> i've heard of people who sadly saw what looked like a pin dot, it turned out to be melanoma and they died. personally. i've experienced that with a friend. let's talk about the a, b, c, and do melanoma. >> asymmetry. you want your mole to be

symmetric ka ol' both sides. if one side is different, that could be a problem. you don't want the mole to have any irregularity to it. >> b is for border. how is that different for asymmetry that we saw there. >> there should be a sharp border. there shouldn't be no notching. it should be clear, not fuzzy. >> it should be regular. >> it should not be irregularly. you can see that it should be very well demar indicated. the border should be sharp, very clean looking, a straight line in some way. >> c is for color. as we look at colors, all these different colors, what do you not want to see. >> you want the color to be all tones of color. you don't want different shades of brown or black. you don't want a color that mixes red or black or a little bit of gray in it. it really should be one color. >> certainly scaling or bleeding, anything like that -- >> these definitely always an

indicator that something at snooish d is for diameter. size is important as well. >> we usually say the size of a pencil eraser, about 6 millimeters about about the cut-off. you want to have it looked at to make sure it's not an issue. not that all moles that are bigger than 6 millimeters are a problem, but they can be. >> what if you see it changing in size? is that usually an indicator or could it just be a -- >> it could be e, evolving, and that's a big problem. this thing i find often very reliable is a person will come in and say this mole has changed. it's irregular, slightly change, irregular in color, itchy. usually it's an indicator that something is going on. exclusively it's just infamiliar torey but i like the evolving. >> melanoma not the only type of

skin cancer. there are two other types. >> melanoma is the deadliest and can cause the most problem but basil and squamous. basil usually presents with a red or a dry scaling patch. it can look like a pimple that doesn't heal. and squamous cell carcinoma also can present as a scaling patch, usually in very chronically sun-exposed areas. you see this in people who are very fair, spent a lot of time outdoors. >> keep track of your moles and go in for checks if you can. thank you very much. >> thank you. coming up next, the top five places to retire and get the most for your money and a little later on bobby thomas is here with all your warm weather beauty needs. ♪

we know this growing up as chocolate chip cookies. we mix our salt with levining. >> any kind of special flour? >> just all purpose flour. >> the brownish color is from the molasses? >> exactly. it's not a lot. it's a tablespoon of molasses for this recipe but it does an amazing amount of work. we love the added flavor and more important the texture of it. >> what i think is interesting about these cookies, you add two eggs, you're also adding two kinds of chocolate chunks. >> we are. we like the different textures and flavors. this is our normal chocolate chip like a tollhouse chocolate chip that we're going to put in. there and this is a chocolate chunk which is a gitard, san francisco, the texture is a little different and bitterness. that goes in there.
